here is a good TV for the price http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN52A650-5...5264&sr=1-5 Read the reviews and make an informed decision, because you have to think that this TV will be with you for 3-4 years. I have a 65 Toshiba DLP, and if I could sell it to buy this TV, I would sell it in a heartbeat.

Relative to 720p and 1080p, only Blueray discs can provide 1080p. Standard DVDs are usually 480p and broadcast TV cannot achieve 1080p, whether it is gained via antennae, cable or satellite.
Just wanted to add that the difference between 1080p & 720p/1080i are only noticable on screens larger than 50" - 52".
I have a 40" Sony Bravia LCD. I love it and got a great deal for it with my PS3. I am currently saving up for another HDTV and this time I'm going to go with a Vizio. Mainly because they have a great picture and price.
My Uncle purchased a 50+" Sharp Aquais LCD and I can say his picture is better than my Sony.
But he paid almost 2x more than what I paid so I'm not suprised.

I know the motion blur occurs on plasmas. Not positive on the LCDs. I know DLP TVs always use that as a selling point- no motion blur.
Which is also the reason LCD's are prefered when you are using the TV as a gaming TV because most games run as such a fast pace that you get that blur on Plasmas.

...the repairman and I was talking about Plasma's and he was telling me that the life expectancy is like 3-5 years and they are done..
Somebody told me that too. Seems kind of hard to believe.
Not completely true, they have a life of 6000-8000 hours which means they are good for 10 years. The early plasmas die in 3 years but that was before the technology was there.
So do you know, are they completly done...and why..??? It just seems a lil weird that all of the sudden they just "run out of gas" or whatever it is that happens to them......My wife and I have been talking about buying another TV when we get our tax return back...not sure about the budget we will have...depends on how much we lay out for the bills and crap..... .....I know one thing is for sure though....It will be a LCD TV....just because of the PC option.....

No. Current plasmas (good ones, at least) are rated between 60,000 and 100,000 hours for their half-life; that is, after that period of time the screen will be half as bright as it was when brand new. If you break that down its something like 11-15 years of life if the TV were left on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
I watch sports all the time on my plasma and have no blurring problems whatsoever. Mine is a Panasonic TH-42PZ700U.
What do you mean "it will be an LCD just because of the PC option" ?

There is nothing wrong with geting a plasma TV the technology is very solid.. You can;t go wrong with it, they are cheaper now and have a great picture. My gf got one and she loves it.. I prefer the LCD 1080p 120hz.. best tvs on the market

DP17...you have it backwards...the plasmas do NOT have the motion blur issue...it is the LCD's that are plagued with this problem and it is the entire reason for the 120Hz refresh rate you see today and the ultra new 240 Hz TV's....
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...

I don't understand some of the perceptions of Plasmas in this thread. My 50" Plasma has been great. I play games on it and watch sports on it all the time without any issues. I personally prefer Plasma over LCD as long as the screen is broken in properly.

My DLP can double as my laptop monitor. And it's a 56" screen!

Ahh. I thought maybe you were under the impression that only LCD TVs could double as monitors. My 42" plasma looks great with my Macbook hooked up to it.

Ah crap. All I know is I own 2 DLPs, and they do not have the motion blur. I kept thinking it was the plasmas that did.
My bad.

hdtvsolutions.com I'm totally leaching that image from the above link, but I thought it was good graphical example of resolution applications. I sit probably 11' from my 50" 720p. Btw, motion blur is likely "motion judder" (yeah I know I'm being anal ). This can also be a signal delivery issue regardless of the type of set. I notice it occasionally while watching the ESPN HD channels, but not while watching HD sports on other networks.

This is reason why the 120hz TVs are so much better then the rest.. you actually get more frames per second, which makes the picture appear to be smoother and sometimes unrealistic.. I personally love the 120hz watching blu-rays.. I currently own about 90ish blus. If you are into blu-rays this a great site, go to their forums and we post all deals on movies that we save money on buying blus. http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/

I've got a Sony Bravia 50" DLP and couldn't be happier. Paid just under a grand. Any improvement on that picture will just be minor...not worth more than twice the price. Then again, as with all reviews of expensive items, everyone thinks their purchase was a wise one. Go see the TV's for yourself.

Nope, just that I already have one and so far I love it.....it just needs to be alot bigger is all and I have heard so much bad about Plasma's, that it has just kinda stuck, ya know.......I really don't know anythig about either.....

There was a thread about HDTV's around the beginning of the year...I posted alot about my search on it. There was a lot of good info in that thread if it is still searchable.
I think at that time I had given out this link. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/
Very good place to investigate each unit as one narrows it down.
Also, I use CNET to start in research of any electronic purchse. http://reviews.cnet.com/televisions/?tag=TOCleftColumn.0 Look at editors ratings and user ratings.

Plasma's get a bad rap. And I almost bought into it...
You can do all of the research beforehand that you want....And you should too...But all that research should only back up what you see in person.
I knew all of the bad things people said about plasmas before going to see them....But when I did get to see them...I was able to put each and every one of those bad things into a quantifiable measure. And in the end...all those bad things people were saying...were not all that bad and did not have a large impact on my choice of TV.
When I saw the TV's side by side....Yes...the LCD's will catch your eye first....and there can be some inportance in that...But that is because they are brighter...However, as I sat and really watched them....I saw my eyes continually go back and become more impressed with the picture on the plasmas...The colors were richer, the contrast was better, the picture just "snapped" better to me...And that was when I started to consider them.
And as I went through each of the negatives for each kind of set, the less and less the negatives seemed to affect me on the plasmas. In the end...the plasma won out. I would have been VERY happy with either...but for my particular situation...the plasma won out...
Now since I was considering a wall mount DLP was never an option. And as far as projection like DLP my only issue is that it seems like you need to be in the perfect spot to see the picture best. If you are too high, low, left or right....the edges fade and the picture just doesn't seem right...Of course that usuallly isn't an issue sitting in a room from a set distance all the time...But DLP is a great way to get good size and a very good picture without spending a fortune. And with the new LED and Laser sets the quality of the picture will rival or even surpass the LCD's and Plasma's
as a previous poster mentioned...Cnet is a great source...I used them quite a bit...And you will notice when they rank their top HDTV's regardless of type or price...Plasmas are their top choices....
So in the end...my advice is...do ALOT of research. But only let that research back up what you see in person...don't let the research make the decision for you...
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...

I have all three technologies. A 32" Sharp LCD in the guest bedroom, a 57" Mits DLP in the bedroom and a 58" Samsung Plasma in the living room. If you're going to watch sports, Plasma is the way to go. If you want a larger screen size, Plasma is still the way to go. The DLP is the least favorite of the three. Picture is flatter because of the anti-glare screen; it just doesn't jump out at you like LCD or Plasma. Plasma doesn't suffer from the motion blur issues that LCD can and why it's better for fast moving action. You'll also pay the same for a smaller LCD than you will for the Plasma.
I wouldn't invest in DLP but you'll probably be happy with either an LCD or a Plasma set. LCD's generally only go up to 52" and the few that are 55" start around 5K where you can get an excellent Plasma 58" for less than 3K online and around 3K in your local brick and mortar store.
Get the extended warranty on whatever you decide on. Generally I would never recommend an extended warranty on anything as most items these days are readily disposable and it's cheaper to just get a new one. Your TV investment however should be protected and chances are pretty good you'll need the warranty.

You da man.
Thanks for the links I_Rogue. I was googling for that, but I knew someone had posted it in the previous HD TV discussion.
I just finished some shopping at Newegg and picked up a 6' HDMI cable for $11.99 w / free shipping to use with my son's laptop. Linky
I know that there are other sites with good buys for cables, but Newegg had plenty to choose from. including many under $10.

thanks for the info on Newegg. I'm definitely going there to buy my cables. As for the TV, well, that'll be decided on another day.
