While we're at it, could someone go over the internet security software we should all be using?

Yeah ... don't go to shareware, piracy or porn sites ... you should have no problems.

You're no fun.

Just a note to AVG Free......I used that for years, but one my boxes got infected with a rather nasty virus recently. I have since switched everything over to avast Home Edition which is also free. That app and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware cleaned the system nicely. I agree with using Spybot Search and Destroy, particularly since it includes real time protection via Tea Timer. MS's Window's Defender also has real time protection. All are free.

My mind is changing on what I want.
I understand that a 400.00 model will give me what I need.

But I am thinking I never know in the future what I will want to do on a computer. Plus I have two daughters one who is 11. Pretty soon she will be messing around on the computer much more. She just plays goofy games on it now. I want to make sure she will have what she needs on the computer to do whatever she needs it to do in the future.

So saying that, I'm looking at two different Gateways.
Both will have a 22" HD monitor.
The first one has 4g memory, 640 hard drive, quad core processor.
The other one has 8g memory. 640 hard drive, quad core processor, it also has a tv tuner built in it. You can watch and record tv on it. That will be great for Browns games when the wife wants to watch something else. Plus some kind of graphics card with some kind of memory on it.

I have to do more research, but these two are in my sights as of right now.
I know both of them are way too much for what I will ever need, but if my daughter or myself need it to do something it will be able to.

Thanks for all the responses, very helpful.

I have seen the 400.00 computers and they come with a monitor. 19" flat finish. They are nice, but I am set for sure on a 22" glossy finished one.

So if I spend 400 on the computer and then buy the 22" monitor on sale right now for 200.00, well there is 600.00 obviously. Well kick in another 150.00 and I can get much more computer. One that will do pretty much whatever I need it to do.

The monitor decision is what is driving the price up and I am for sure set on the 22".

You'll thank yourself. I just upgraded monitors myself, I had under rated how much a good monitor means to a computer.

Like they say, Americans like things big.
When I bought my HDTV I was going in to buy a 37-42".
I walked out with a 52".

Same as a computer monitor. The smaller ones look nice but when you see the big shiny 22" or 24" ones, it's hard to go with the smaller one.

If by glossy you mean the ones with the plexi-glass front. It gives it a sharper appearance, but beware, glare from room/window lights can be extreme.

I know it's your money and ultimately your choice, but I hate seeing people spend more on a computer than they need to. Inexpensive home use computers will last longer than people think, unless you are definately going to game. I gave my inlaws a computer I bought in '00. The hard drive was replaced 2 years ago, and last month a new processor had to be installed. It's a great computer, still chugging along on the internet, and could be put to use helping with homework. With plenty of room for reports. The biggest key to keeping a home computer running at it's best is keeping viruses, spyware, and other malicious software off of it. Regular scans, maybe a RAM upgrade, and you'll have a computer that runs like a champ for several years. The last time I bought a computer was here, http://www.pricewatch.com/public/
Ascendtech in Cleveland to be exact.
