Now that signings have started to trickle in, I figure this thread will be help keep all the names centralized. First off, Gibril Wilson to the Phins. MAN, this was the one guy I wanted in free agency! Link Miami continues to be one of the most aggressive teams before the free-agency signing period begins after midnight on Friday morning. It did it again this morning.
The Dolphins signed safety Gibril Wilson, who was released by Oakland last week, to a five-year, $27.5 million contract that includes $8 million guaranteed and $16.5 million in the deal’s first three years.
Next up for Miami is re-signing free-agent safety Yeremiah Bell, which it hopes to do today.

Not only is Gibril a guy I wanted, but ~$5mil/year is not a bad price for him either. It could very well be the price we end up paying to keep Sean Jones.

Giants sign tagged RB Jacobs to four-year deal Posted: February 25th, 2009 | Adam Schefter The Giants gave RB Brandon Jacobs the franchise tag, and now they treated him like a franchise player.
The Giants signed Jacobs to a four-year, $25 million deal that includes $13 million guaranteed and $15 million in the deal’s first two years. Jacobs agents, Andrew Kessler and Justin Schulman, had been discussing the deal with the Giants for weeks, and it finally was consummated Wednesday.
Jacobs isn’t going anywhere. New York made a Giant signing.

Dolphins take Crowder off the market Posted: Adam Schefter - Today
Just before the start of free agency, the Dolphins made another move, re-signing LB Channing Crowder to a multi-year deal.

The Bills just released Dockery. While I'd love to replace Hadnot, I think his asking price is going to be too high.
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

Is he any good?
I mean, I know it's a cap move but you don't drop important pieces regardless of their cap number.

From eotab's post in the Sean Jones thread: Quote:
At first I'm like HUH!!! Thats tampering. Then I realized that Gbril was released by the Raiders making him a negoatiable FA immediately.

I think teams can negoiate contracts with any free agent (G.Wilson was a special case), announce them....but not officialy sign them until midnight too. That might explain why we'll end up seeing a dozen announcements before midnight tonight.

Teams can sign players that were released by another team.

if a guy was cut (like wilson) then he's free to sign with anybody at anytime. if a guy is in the last year of his contract (like ward), then his contract doesn't expire until midnight tonight. that's the difference.

That would be tampering. A team isn't allowed to contact a player until 12:01. Unless the player was released like Gibril Wilson, then he is free to sign at any point.

I think the NFL turns a blind eye to tampering this close to the free agency period.

If a player is released before the free agency period, any team can sign him.
Players that will become free agents at midnight (i.e. Sean Jones) are still under contract with the team they previously played for, therefore it is against the rules for them to be signed by another team.

Whatever, just as long as people get the message.

Dammit. That's three guys I wanted that Miami took off the market. Wilson, Crowder and Carey.
I suppose our FO wasn't as interested in Wilson as some of us were. He was fair game the minute he was released.

Our FO has allready told us what to expect;no one early on. They are going to wait for that 2nd tier of FA's,that haven't been in signed in the 1st week or two.If a team makes good selections, they get more bang for thier buck. Fiscal responsibility.A new approach for the team.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

The people being signed are either being signed by their current team, or they have already been released meaning that they are no longer under contract with anyone, which means they are free to sign with anyone.
For players under contract whose contracts end after the 2008 NFL season, those contracts expire at midnight tonight... thus making them free agents and able to be signed by anyone. Those players, until midnight, are still under contract and thus are not able to negotiate with anyone but their current team.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

To bring us back on topic; DeAngelo Hall has resigned with the redskins. 6 years, 55M max, 23M guaranteed.

I haven't really paid any attention to FA this year...or the board as far as what players we think we might get...
But Jonathan Vilma is FA...i would love to have him in here...dra is gettin older and if we get him at MLB all we would need to focus on in the draft would be OLB/S/CB we would be set for a long time.
Not sure if he was there when mangini was there with the jets...i wanna say he was..but i could be wrong..

Mangini sent Vilma packing. He doesn't fit the 3-4 scheme.

Just heard on the radio that Housh is close to resigning w/ the Bengals. I bet Haynesworth's BIG new contract will make Sean Rogers even happier.

Mangini and company have a lid on this thing-- i just scanned my usual sites and nothing, not even a hint of a player interested in Cleveland or the browns interested in a player. And with the limited draft picks, we need to be signing some guys. We need a few starters on D, and those 2nd tier guys don't excite me too much.
