This is to Grossi, not you Django... Quote:
Why would the Browns have an interest in Carr, who is strictly a return specialist? We don't know the answer to that one yet, but word out of Nashville, Tenn., is that Carr has a Cleveland visit on his itinerary.
For depth at CB you fool, like eotab is pointing out.
Here we have the "official" opinion from Grossi: FA players don't want to come to Cleveland. Have they been given offers or just left without a deal? Were they given an offer from us but instead signed elsewhere for more than they're worth? Grossi knows nothing.
Mangini said before FA began that we would not be big players immediately for the top tier, big money guys. That's a sound plan for now IMO. We have some talent on this team. We need depth. Mosley would be a good addition if we can get him for the right money.

Each day that passes, the more I think we should go after Ray Lewis...sorry, I guess it's just me.
However, if it's two weeks from now and there is still no noise about Lewis, then we really need to think about getting him.
you had a good run Hank.

I wouldn't have a problem with that. If the money was right and we weren't tied up long-term with him. I don't care if he has a bifurcated tail and carries a hay fork if he can help stop the run.

O-Toad was on it and onto something. To paraphrase an old commercial, "When you say Poston (agent dealing), you've said a lot." Some of these guys are rough rows to hoe, to a point where I wonder if they have their clients' best at heart." Maybe it is the nature of the biz, and it may be hard reality, but sometimes they have too much leverage on the Game. Each year I think these salaries are stupid money kind of overbloated, then I see the next year's settlements and agreements. Sheeeesh! Well, I guess if you pay enough, then they have to all be great what with the tall dollars and all, right?

Charlie Frye is visiting the Raiders. So is another former Brown, Melvin Fowler. Quote:
The Seattle-to-Oakland flight is busy with Seahawks going to visit the Raiders. Not to mention connectors from Buffalo and Denver.
Oakland, which has had a busy offseason, is hosting visits today with two of Seattle’s free agents — quarterback Charlie Frye and offensive tackle Ray Willis — along with free-agent center Melvin Fowler. Frye could serve as a backup for JaMarcus Russell, and Willis has drawn interest around the league from tackle-needy teams. Tack on one more visitor for the Raiders today. After losing center Jake Grove to the Dolphins, the Raiders arranged a visit with Fowler, who spent the past three seasons with the Buffalo Bills.
But the Raiders did make one signing today.
Changes in Denver led to an opportunity for offensive tackle Erik Pears in Oakland. Once Denver did not place a contract tender on Pears, he became an unrestricted free agent. And once Pears became an unrestricted free agent, he jumped at the chance to sign with the Raiders, who will give him a chance to compete for playing time at offensive tackle. After becoming an undrafted free agent, Pears was with Denver from 2005-2008.
Oakland made a splash before free agency, re-signing punter Shane Lechler and cornerback Nnamdi Asamugha. Now it is making another push in the opening week of free agency.

"I´m sure none of you guys saw him play last year...he had a great season."
Yeah...I'm a little leary of CBs getting all of a sudden sprouting up from the depth of nowhere in year 7. Cause its a position that no matter who you are - you get REPS! So its not like you can be buried on a team for YEARS and Years if you know what I mean.
But I have to agree with your logic of him having some game and the reasoning that 2 teams hot on him face him twice last year in another division from where they are now.
But its obvious that regardless of NEEDs we aren't going to OVERPAY in this FA market. Another one of our visits just signed an expensive contract for a CB.
Add also Ward getting 4 mil per year.
We just are not going to over spend and set precedents for others seeking new contracts. We must be prudent and disciplined in this effort at least until we know what kind of CBA we will be getting long term to make LONG TERM decisions.
3-4 years ago signing Shaffer or ES the deals seem good now regarding their long term ramifications. But with no set CBA we won't know if these over payments being made will fit long term when a new agreement is made? There could be economic hard times in the near future. Advertising rights down. TV contracts down even a fair distribution of profit (basically Cap standards) could see Team Caps actually going down not up.
We need CB depth...I don't anyone out there that was going to step in and take away McD's or EWs spot...they might but not automatic. We need that #3 n #4 CB but won't pay them more than our starters! That won't be healthy at all.
JMHO - Leonhart and waiting to hear about Sanders of the Pats (not Lewis).

Bowens would be a solid pick-up. He'd be a pretty good back-up/rotational guy IMO. He's also a veteran but not ancient, and knows Mangini.

Free-agent watch: Browns schedule visits from Jets defense players by Tony Grossi Tuesday March 03, 2009, 7:37 PM The Jets are landing in Cleveland today. Free agent linebacker David Bowens and defensive lineman C.J. Mosley -- who were reserves on coach Eric Mangini's defense with the Jets -- are scheduled to visit the Browns. Bowens, 31, was a backup at inside and outside linebacker in two seasons under Mangini. He started five games last season in place of injured David Harris and had four sacks and one interception. In New York, Bowens was considered a respected team leader. He played previously with Denver, Green Bay, Washington and Miami. Bowens had arthroscopic knee surgery after the season. The Jets released him after their coaching change to create room for a spending spree that has so far netted linebacker Bart Scott and safety Jim Leonhard from the Ravens and cornerback Lito Sheppard from the Eagles. Mosley, 25, started three games in three years for the Jets. He had 17 tackles and 1.5 sacks as a rotational player at right end last year. Mosley was a sixth-round draft pick of Minnesota in 2005. The Browns, who have not signed any players in the first five days of the free agent signing period, hosted two cornerbacks Tuesday. They were Jabari Greer of Buffalo and Chris Carr of Tennessee. Greer, 5-11 and 180 pounds, is an ascending player who has received interest from Tampa Bay, Detroit and New Orleans. Undrafted in 2004 out of Tennessee, Greer started 23 games the past two seasons for Buffalo. He had two interception returns for touchdowns last year before missing the last six games with a sprained knee. Carr, 5-10 and 180, has been a reserve cornerback and return specialist for four NFL seasons, the first three in Oakland. Last year with Tennessee he was fourth in the NFL with a kickoff return average of 28.1 yards and 12th in punt returns (10.1 yards). The Browns' policy under Mangini and General Manager George Kokinis is to not confirm visits from free agents.

A backup, who started 5 games because somebody was injured... and he would have been tied for the lead on our team in sacks.

Look at the bright side. Maybe it's because its hard to get sacks when the likes of Cedric Benson is hogging the ball. BTW just think of how bad it would have been if Romeo were not a defensive genius.

I get a kick out of this.. people around here just hated Andra Davis yet of all our FA's, he's the only one that has found a home thus far:
Player Position Status Height Weight Experience 2008 Team 2009 Team Adams, Mike SS UFA 5-11 195 5th Season CLE TBD Cousin, Terry DB Released 5-9 185 12th Season CLE TBD Daniels, Travis DB UFA 6-1 195 4th Season CLE TBD Davis, Andra ILB UFA 6-1 250 7th Season CLE DEN Dinkins, Darnell TE UFA 6-4 260 7th Season CLE TBD Friedman, Lennie G UFA 6-3 290 10th Season CLE TBD Griffin, Kris LB UFA 6-3 245 4th Season CLE TBD Holly, Daven DB UFA 5-10 185 4th Season CLE TBD Jones, Sean SS UFA 6-1 220 5th Season CLE TBD McGinest, Willie OLB UFA 6-5 270 15th Season CLE TBD McKinney, Seth G UFA 6-3 310 7th Season CLE TBD Orr, Shantee LB UFA 6-0 246 5th Season CLE TBD Pittman, Chase DE UFA 6-5 300 Rookie CLE TBD Wright, Jason RB UFA 5-10 215 4th Season CLE TBD Young, Scott G UFA 6-4 312 4th Season CLE TBD
To be honest, I didn't think all that much of him either, which makes it just that much odder that he's the only one that's been picked up.

Daman, just look at that list, though. Who else is really worth it?
Jones perhaps, and maybe Wright. But other than those 2, should any of us be surprised that a guy like Chantee Orr hasn't found a home yet?
As for Andra Davis, I always liked the guy, but not as a starting LB, and especially not as a starting LB in the 3-4. Maybe Denver feels he'll fit into their system better. The guy gives 100% and is a very good team leader. But his time here was well overstayed, IMO.

No one hated Davis..may have sounded like I did but I said for 3+ years he was overrated by Cleveland fans..and there were alway a ton of people who tried to argue otherwise which inturn I came back even stronger with my debate..seems in the past two years there some who altered their views..because they finally iso'd him and saw the bad angles he took , how he would take himself out of plays..and was never consistant..he was never a force..he had bad instincts in his runD..he was a better backer in pass coverage... Thats why I wanted him replaced...not because of his personality..but his skillset.. Look where he went..DENVER..should that shock anyone? As far as the rest, I don't care where they end up..or if they don't end up anywhere.

I think that's kind of a stretch, Turk. I know that, personally, Jones certainly has what it takes to stay in the league, if not be a starter. I think there may be some other factors which have kept him from signing somewhere (including here, which I wouldn't be against in the least) such as how much he's demanding, team needs, etc.

As long as Davis was one of our starters, we were not going to have a strong LB core. Not sure what Denver's plans are for him, but that's their issue.
Out of that list, I would consider bringing back (for the right price)
- Holly - 3rd or 4th CB (if we pick up another one) - Adams - Played OK last year. Good depth if we get another safety. IMO Adams and Pool gave us our best safety play last year (Pool able to go to his natural position) - McKinney - Versitile OL depth - Friedman - Versitile OL depth, IMO our return game felt his absence last year

Unkink the shorts, there. No one is dissin' your boy. All that was said was it isn't a big surprise those guys haven't landed anywhere yet. And it isn't. Jones will play somewhere this year.

Well perhaps you didn't hate him, but damn, there was enough hate for him to go around,, that's for sure.
He didn't deserve it. He was a 5th round pick that played for the most part, better than anyone should expect a 5th rounder to play.
I just told DC in PM that we probably all knew that an upgrade at his position was required if we were ever going to contend for anything. But wouldn't he have made some nice depth.
As for Jones,,, honestly, I thought he'd be the first guy to get picked off. Now that is surprising to me,,

No, teams are focusing on the more elite players of FA first and Jones isn't elite... once the big names are off the table, that's when guys like Jones will begin serious negotiations and that's when the Browns will make a more noticable effort to going after players...

It's the depth that has to be upgrade..which plain sucked..we had no quality backups to come in when a starter went out. Sprinkle in a few new starters in needed areas..

Exactly. Teams usually have a pretty good idea of what a player is asking for before bringing them in for a visit. They aren't gonna waste time bringing in someone they know is asking for a lot more than they would pay.

Well, I suppose that's one way of looking at it.. or he could be turning away meetings in hopes of resigning with the Browns... Who knows what conversations Mangini/Koks have had with him or his agents..
It's just that Jones is not a HORRIBLE player.. not by a long shot. Look at what some teams are paying for guys.. Lionhart just went to the Jets.. he got decent bucks and while he's decent, I think Jones could be better in the right system. JMO however.

Yeah, Jones is not horrible at all. That's what I find weird too. Money may not be an issue at all, and I really have no idea and it's just my opinion that that is the cause. It just seems like he is certainly talented enough to be at least going on visits. Money just seems to me to be the most logical reason to me. As I said though, it's just my opinion. Maybe I just don't want to admit he's not that good. Lol.

I wonder if maybe teams are worried about Jones's knee surgery last year and the way he played when he came back from that. Maybe its worse then has been let on.

Geez. ' Shot. Step away and look at the list! This is NOT where you wanna leave the shopping cart, but hey, who knows? Maybe RAC or some other defensive genius could make a silk purse or two out of these sow's ears, but I just don't think I see all that. But , hey, what do I know. Player Position Status Height Weight Experience 2008 Team 2009 Team Adams, Mike SS UFA 5-11 195 5th Season CLE TBD - Nickel, Dime Safety easily to be replaced. We will wait for the Starting Money to be spent and then make an offer to the best left standing! Cousin, Terry DB Released 5-9 185 12th Season CLE TBD - Gosh any UDFA we bring in will be an Upgrade. Daniels, Travis DB UFA 6-1 195 4th Season CLE TBD - I thought he's on the team and we gave up a 7th round pick for him...was it conditional? And we get our pick back? Davis, Andra ILB UFA 6-1 250 7th Season CLE DEN - They are starting a 3-4 from scratch...they needed a Veteran Leader he'll serve his purpose till they upgrade. Dinkins, Darnell TE UFA 6-4 260 7th Season CLE TBD - I liked him but health issues make him expendable Friedman, Lennie G UFA 6-3 290 10th Season CLE TBD - Special Teams guy Griffin, Kris LB UFA 6-3 245 4th Season CLE TBD - Special Teams guy and I thought nowhere close to his billing. Holly, Daven DB UFA 5-10 185 4th Season CLE TBD - Good depth but injury supposedly lowers his value. Jones, Sean SS UFA 6-1 220 5th Season CLE TBD - One of the few I think we actually wouldn't mind signing. But way lower than what he thinks he is worth. McGinest, Willie OLB UFA 6-5 270 15th Season CLE TBD - Who Knows? McKinney, Seth G UFA 6-3 310 7th Season CLE TBD - Good depth but with Tucker back he's out. I think we released him and then signed him after injuries? Orr, Shantee LB UFA 6-0 246 5th Season CLE TBD - Tried hard...just not talented. Pittman, Chase DE UFA 6-5 300 Rookie CLE TBD - didn't release he was still with us guess we re-signed him after injuries??? Wright, Jason RB UFA 5-10 215 4th Season CLE TBD - Won't get signed early, we could bring him back...he should be there after the draft. Young, Scott G UFA 6-4 312 4th Season CLE TBD - Thats ok, whoever he is
Well almost all on the list are 2nd tier or 3rd for that matter with only AD n Sean Jones of having starter status. Those are the type we will sign in FA to replace them...2nd tier or 3rd But I don't see anyone signing 2nd tier guys yet....well I have but so far for Starter Money
There is about 5-7 on that list that wouldn't have been on our team if we were Healthy. So not even part of something we have to upgrade. Cause the Tuckers n Robaire Smiths are back.

I agree with you on these guys. I really like Holly, Adams is solid as a backup safety and I think both McKinney and Friedman are better than Hadnot.
I would also look at bringing back Dinkins.
Am I perfect? No Am I trying to be a better person? Also no

With the signing of Royal it looks like Dinkins won't be back.
