first, why would Denver trade Cutler? Next, if Denver is getting calls, i'd bet my bottom dollar that the browns are getting calls. I really like this new regime. They are silent. No leaks, no news, then bang- something happens- example: Winslow.
Honestly, i am shocked that Cassel went for KC's second round pick. Screamin' deal for the chiefs. I thought for sure if this trade went down, the #3 went with it and when Vrabel was mentioned yesterday- seemed like a package deal for the pick.
So, what is the market for DA? Was that the #35 for Cassel- and the Vikes 4th for Sage. Honestly, isn't DA kind of on par with Cassel? First round pick is out. But a second just doesn't seem that far fetched at the moment. But who needs a QB. Tampa, the jets, detroit, the bears. Maybe Sanchez and Stafford could come in and play. Leftwich, Warner and Garcia still out there for a quick, short term fix. Better hope that a team falls in love with DA or the value of the trade just won't be worth giving him up. At this point, i think he is worth more then a 3rd round pick to us, and would not part with him for anything less then a mid second rounder.

i don't understand the infatuation with cassel...
he's decent, but i think new england got the better of the deal, the guy had one good year on top of having 2 pro bowl receivers, strike that, 2 of the best receivers in the game.
i'm not saying the guy is a hack, but i think new england realized that cassel's stock won't go any higher, they now have 4 picks in the first two rounds. they're going to reload and reload quickly.
if cassel is a 2, and rosenfels is a 4, i think we can get a 2 or 3, if kokinis wants to deal him, that is.

I think that this will hurt us big time.....this being on of the destinations for a possible DA trade, and we already made a move with TB....Minn got Sage....so that leaves us with Detroit and the Jets for possible moves.....If I was Detroit, I make the move.....but now I can definitely see Curry going to KC...If I was pulling the trigger, I would go OL...but I think I'm smarter than they are....lol....

I'm not trying to insinuate that you're "not" smarter than they are.......... But if you are? A LOT of people got their panties in a bunch over nothing. Because that's where Pioli landed! So since everybody that wanted Pioli were wrong, and you're smarter than Pioli? That'd be pretty funny right there. I don't care who ya are!
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

How in the world did the Cheifs acquire Cassel AND Vrabel for a 2nd round pick? Me thinks that Pioli still has some fans in the Patriots FO.
I understand Cassel may be a one hit wonder and a product of the system in NE, but considering the success Pioli had in NE, I would think he saw something he liked.
I personally think the Chiefs made out big time in this deal.

No doubt, its a sweetheart deal between close friends, that makes little sense value wise. You have to know that somewhere down the line, Belichick is going to want the "favor" returned.
..maybe on draft day or sometime in the future, Belichick is going to ask Pioli for a favor in return.

The Patriots have no need to ask for any favors....
They want to win MORE championships... Thats all they care about... And they build through the draft.
They are taking a chance in hoping that Brady will be set to go... But even if he wasn't... I'm guessing the Pats will be drafting another QB late in the draft, and hope they can get lucky again by getting something for a backup QB.
With their offensive line, and WR's/TE's..... A lot of QB's can play well in their system.

Not a sweetheart deal, IMO........just a regular deal.
Cassel is worth a 2nd rounder......Vrabel is on the downside of his career and in the last year of his contract at 34 (5?) years of age. One of the things that has kept the Patsies as contenders in recent years is that they know when to hang on to players and when to let them go, in similar fashion to the Stillers.

No doubt...
Actually...IMO this is a major RISK for KC...
Cassel still has only 15 NFL starts...And he came in with a team that was LOADED on both sides of the ball...He wasn't asked to do much...And that's how it shoulda been...And yeah we all know his 08 stats...lol...
What this dude's done is go from the BEST to the WORST...KC has NUTTIN' around him...No running game...No OL...No receivers...And an unhappy TE approaching the end...And NO Defense...Wanna talk about a recipe to kill a QB's confidence going forward...U got it...
GOOD LUCK CASSEL...
Flip it...Anderson's 1 year removed from a Pro Bowl campaign and comes off a bad year in which virtually the entire team collapsed...One could argue Anderson would garner MORE in a trade...
I'll take less tho...Like MID 2nd...hehehe...
Go Browns!!!

Hmmm.... with Cassel and Rosenfels traded, that should make Anderson the top QB available in a trade. The flip side is that there are now two fewer teams interested in trading for a QB.
If Kurt Warner retires, then Arizona may be interested. The longer he sits available to be signed, the longer a wait we'll have for a DA trade. Please retire Kurt! Detroit may be interested. Tampa Bay may be interested. The J-E-T-S may be interested.
I have no idea who else beyond those four that may be interested.

KC has no receivers???? I'd take Bowe in a second, that guy is a beast without a QB- now that he has one- look out, he'll be tough to stop.

Chiefs acquire Cassel, Vrabel in trade with Pats
by FOXSports.com
Updated: March 1, 2009, 12:38 AM EST
Scott Pioli left the New England Patriots to become Kansas City's general manager.
Quarterback Matt Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel are now coming with him.
After putting the franchise tag on Cassel as insurance for their two-time Super Bowl MVP, the Patriots shipped Cassel and linebacker Vrabel to Kansas City on Saturday. The Chiefs gave up shockingly little — the 34th overall pick in the April draft for both players.
The Chiefs have the third overall selection following a franchise-worst 2-14 season. In yielding their second-round draft choice, they acquire a reliable 12-year veteran linebacker and a proven young quarterback who could immediately fill one of their most urgent needs.
Starting quarterback Tom Brady's rehab of a severe knee injury was set back when an infection forced a second operation. By putting the franchise tag on Cassel, New England would have had to pay him $14.5 million to keep him as a backup.
Cassel hadn't started a game since high school but stepped in when Brady was hurt less than eight minutes into the season opener against Kansas City. He went on to throw for 3,693 yards and 21 touchdowns in 15 starts.
"It is very easy to root for guys like Matt Cassel, who do everything the right way and flourish as a result," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said in a statement. "As much as we would have loved to continue working with Matt, we wish him nothing but the best as he takes this next step forward in his career."
Financial compensation on a new contract with Cassel has not been reached yet, a source told FOXSports.com.
The Patriots' 11-5 record kept them out of the playoffs, but Belichick and personnel director Scott Pioli were again hailed for their ability to reach deep into the draft and uncover a gem at quarterback. Brady was the 199th player drafted in 2000 and Cassel was a seventh-round pick in 2005.
Pioli was hired as general manager of the Chiefs in January. About a month later, the housecleaning began — he fired coach Herm Edwards and hired Arizona offensive coordinator Todd Haley.
Now comes this latest move, which will depend on Vrabel and Cassel passing their physicals.
"I have a long history with both players," Pioli said in a statement. "Mike and Matt are men that I respect both personally and professionally. I look forward to having them as new members of the Chiefs family."
The 33-year-old Vrabel was part of three Super Bowl-winning teams in his eight years with New England, primarily as an outside linebacker. He joins a team whose linebackers were devastated by injury and played poorly. The Chiefs are now counting on Vrabel's experience and leadership.
"Mike Vrabel epitomizes everything a coach could seek in a professional football player: toughness, intelligence, playmaking, leadership, versatility and consistency at the highest level," Belichick said. "Behind the scenes, Mike's wit and personality is one of the things we have all enjoyed about coming to work every day."
Tyler Thigpen, the first player from tiny Coastal Carolina to be drafted by the NFL, took over at quarterback last year after Kansas City's No. 1 and No. 2 went out with season-ending injuries. He proved so ineffective at managing the power running game, the Chiefs switched offenses and went to a college-type spread attack.
Occasionally, he was effective. Still, Thigpen lost 10 of the 11 games he started, throwing for 21 touchdowns and 2,994 yards.
FOXSports.com's Alex Marvez and the Associated Press contributed to this report. web page
Again, not my words, but the opinion of others that do this stuff for a living...
"The Chiefs gave up shockingly little — the 34th overall pick in the April draft for both players."

I am still scratching my head on this trade, and the talk that Tampa and Denver jumped into it. Did New England take a lower pick from KC then they would have gotten from Tampa? We have tampa's second. No way a third pulls the deal so wouldn't logic say that they were offereing their first rounder? And what the heck was Detroit doing, snoozing at the office. How come they weren't offering their #20? I can't believe that NE took the best offer for Cassel.
Denver has a heck of a QB issue now. Cutler sounds ticked off. ooops

J/C Interesting to note that, according to Pro Football Weekly, Matt Cassel was the 26th ranked QB in the 2005 draft. Charlie Frye was ranked #4, Derek Anderson was ranked #14, and Josh Cribbs was ranked #34 in that same year. ( http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFLDraft/Draft+Insider/2005/Printout2QB.htm ) The guy never even started in high school, was a backup to Palmer and Leinart at USC, and here he is being franchised by NE and then traded for the 34th overall pick in the draft. Makes you wonder what we could have gotten for DA if we had traded him after the '07 season.

Dave...you just hit upon a "major" negative for the Browns organization....DEVELOPING TALENT !
Cassel was a 7th round pick that spent 3 yrs learning in one system and spent last season showing he learned a lot in the previous 3 yrs.
Regardless of what some believe, "coaches are teachers" and the Browns have not had very good teachers and keep changing the system and position coaches every couple of years or so. The end result for the Browns...we develop little talent and that is very costly to our organization.
Mangini and Kokinis say they believe in building the Browns via the draft. If Mangini and his position coaches can develop (teach) the young players they draft, their program should produce a playoff team in 3 yrs..jmho...mac

Left side of the Oline is fine. Right side sucks but that could easily be taking care of in one off season. No receivers? Lets see...Bowe is leading all receivers that came out of his draft class without a good QB throwing the ball to him (Calvin Johnson, Ted Guinn came out in his draft), Mark Bradley who the Chiefs picked up late into the season did pretty good as the #2 WR. His numbers would have been better, as well as Bowe's, but Thigpen was not accurate on the long balls. He'd have the WRs beating the CBs and constantly under throw and occasionally put the ball 10 yards past the WR. Tony Gonzo is still putting up better numbers than any other TE in the league and while he is aging he is in great shape because he takes extra care of his body.
There is no running game because the right side of the line sucks. Get the line fixed and the running game reappears. The one thing you listed that you won't get any argument from me about is that horrid defense. But the Chiefs are switching to the 3-4, so I'm hoping the Chiefs can trade out of the #3 and get Everett Brown. The guy is going to be a monster. He has several of the NFL moves down as a junior in college. Explosive quickness, and is mush stronger than his size as he would bull rush LT and than spin to the inside on them. I think he will be an outstanding OLB in the 3-4. If Curry is on the board at #3 do you think the Browns would trade up to get him?
I'm just hoping that Cassell isn't a one year wonder. I don't think he is, but many QBs would have had success on the Pats. But if the Chiefs want the Cassell that they saw in NE, they had better finish that line up this off season. Of course, the Pats did give up the most sacks in the NFL last year. Maybe the Chiefs can pick up Housh to put opposite of Bowe. I know wishful thinking.

Not a chance!! Short on picks as it is, no way Kok gives them up to trade up, to pay more in a contract.

Actually I'm surprised Mac hasn't come out with this yet.
Also Shep how do you explain the reports that Denver was going to have a 1 st rounder involved in a trade for JUST CASSEL...I know just rumors but ask Cutler if they were just rumors
OK Mac and all fellow Conspiracy addicts here is the scoop.
Don Belicheck...just had his right hand man go out to the Mid-West for his health and will start his own family. But former Captaino Pioli who was the HIT MAN on many occasions for Don Belicheck.
Well obviously Vrabel and Cassel was HUSH UP MONEY from the DON.
After all his last Lieutenant involved with his wrong doings spilled the beans and he has a Hit Out on him....
Aint it obvious...note to readers this was done half in jest and half in - Ya never know
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

I dont think the Patriots want a pick that high in the draft. Then getting rid of Vrabel was to get some cap space. They have a bunch of old LBs and need to get younger at the position. In a deep draft, the 2nd round pick will be great value for a good football player for the next 4 years. NE usually dont miss on those picks.
I agree about DA. I wouldnt get rid of him just to do it. Id rather keep him then get anything less then a 2nd. Hes counts against the cap anyways. At $1.5 million against the cap if traded to a new team, he would be great value on a playoff team that needs an experianced backup. Like Dallas and New England. If New England traded that same pick to the Browns, they would be paying a backup $1.5 million instead of the $8- $9 million + they would be paying Cassel. Not likely but just a thought. maybe their second 2nd round pick so it dont look like they traded Cassel for Anderson.

sweatheart deal??? ... *LMAO* ... who the hell do these dolts think Matt Cassell is???? ... he started for a whopping total of 1 year and put us so - so numbers ... he has a noodle for an arm ..... and when he does get the ball downfield he has some serious accuracy issues .... he is smart and accurate on the shorter stuff .... so he does have some qualities I like ... but sheesh .... who in the hell do these guys think he is ... and getting Vrabel's salary off the books helps NE quite a bit .... he is a player that has declined quite a bit over the last 2 or 3 years and is old ... sweatheart deal ... it just makes me *L* at what folks think a guy that had one good year are worth ..... smart move that benifits BOTH TEAMS ...

I don't think it is a risk. The Chiefs were 2-14. Not too much risk involved when your practically the Detroit Lions.

No duh...that's why i included the "IMO" when replying to you. 99 times out of 100 one doesn't have to do that, but knowing how you are I figured it was best to include the disclaimer that it was IN MY OPINION. Thanks for clarifying that we are entitled to our opinions.....then you go and try to find a newspaper article that backs your opinion instead of breaking yours down in-depth. You pulled it out of your ass that there was a favor involved.....where was that in your article from those that do this for a living Mac?????

The 33-year-old Vrabel
Thanks for putting that in red in an attempt to slam me for saying he was 34/35. For the hell of it, I checked his DOB and he turns 34 in August, so I was right in football years for me. You can go back and check any post I have EVER made on any board and you will see that when I mention a player's age and they turn over another year prior to the next season starting (during the offseason) I will go off of their football age. You are absolutely correct, Vrabel is 33 right now......but he will be 34 before the 2009 season commences. Again, thanks for putting that in red it meant so much more to your post. Do you disagree that the Pats are good at knowing when to let a player go? Do you really think (IYO) that Cassel/Vrabel were worth more than a first day pick???

Shep, just clicking. Anyone else see this move of Cassell to KC as a potential way of Belicheck trying to help Pioli and at the same time trying to sabotage Mangini here in Cleveland? Let me elaborate by what I mean here. KC will no longer target a QB in the first round with Cassell, Thigpen and Croyle at QB. Therefore, they will either go after Crabtree or Curry in the first (IMO). As nice as it could be for KC to have Crabtree and Bowe as receivers to help their new starting QB, they definitely would like Johnson, Vrabel and Curry in the middle of that defense as well. I think this move has hurt the Browns chances of getting Curry in the first. Not being a huge KC fan, I don't know what type of defense they intend to run. But with Derrick Johnson, Mike Vrabel and Aaron Curry at LB, that's a pretty solid start of LB corp for a 3-4 and that's in Pioli's first year as GM in KC. And as much as I didn't care for Andra Davis in the middle of our defense, if Mangini doesn't sign someone (FA) before the draft and is hoping for Curry to drop to number five could be a big mistake. No, I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I do think that Belicheck would take any opportunity to help assist Pioli's success and at the same time potentially ruin the chances for Mangini. That's what I think this move did to us, too. Maybe that's a topic for another thread, but I thought this post belonged here. Ref, if you disagree, please move.

I think you might be on to something....I wondered the same thing...only about DA.....It took Cassell and Vrable to get a 2nd......Some people are comparing Cassell and DA ....both guys with only one good year....Cassell fitting in more with the what have you done for me lately mentality.
and if it took Cassell and Vrable to net a 2...did that lower DA's trade value?
Myself..I do not think it hurt it...unless of course KC was thinking of going after DA....but its a thought.

That and leaking the info to the Bucs in order to sabotage McDaniels in Denver.
Belichick must not like when his YOUNG coordinators leave...only when his older ones leave because they know they're going to a) college or b) fail.
Belichick had a messy breakup with Parcells too...what the hell man?

I think Belichick is going to do first and foremost what benefits the Patriots... if he gets some measure of revenge against Mangini or whatever... that would just be an added bonus but I doubt it seriously plays into his planning...

On top of that, you can add that now New England holds the 35th draft in this years draft. Two spots ahead of the our 2nd pick. He could potentially make another move to do some damage to our 2nd round picks. It also seems that there's no one talking about the trade between KC and NE. web page KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Scott Pioli pulled off a big deal in his first major act as the Kansas City Chiefs' general manager, landing quarterback Matt Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel from the New England Patriots for a second-round draft pick. Not a package of draft picks, not the second-rounder and another player, not even with cash thrown into the deal. A potentially franchise-building quarterback and a starting linebacker for one second-round draft pick. That's it. The obvious question is, how did Pioli get so much for so little? There's still no answer. Two days after the trade was announced, the Chiefs again were mum on what seems like a monumentally lopsided deal. Pioli? Unavailable. Coach Todd Haley? Evasive. Cassel? On speaker phone for his introduction to the Kansas City media. Vrabel? Also not available. "I won't get into specifics of that," Haley said of the trade Monday. "I'm glad we have both players on the team." That's it. No discussion of how the trade came together, not even a "we got a good deal." It was calculated, tidy, somewhat mysterious. In other words, very Patriots-like. Of course, that's no surprise. As vice president of player personnel in New England, Pioli helped turn the Patriots into a dynasty, gathering all the pieces for head coach Bill Belichick to win three Super Bowl titles. Those ties to New England clearly played some role in the trade for Cassel and Vrabel. How much? It's hard to tell since no one's talking about the deal. Cassel was talking, but not in person and not about specifics of the trade. Calling in from somewhere in Kansas City, he was thrilled at the chance to be the man after eight years of being the man behind the man. "I've been working really, really hard for a long time, and I finally had an opportunity last year and got a taste of what it's like to be out there and play and be on the field every snap," Cassel said. "I'm excited that I'll have the opportunity to do the same thing here and try to get this thing going and get on the right track and win ball games." On paper, the Chiefs clearly got the better end of the deal. Cassel, after five years on the bench at USC and three more years as Tom Brady's backup in New England, proved to be a more-than capable starter, leading the Patriots to an 11-5 record and nearly into the playoffs after Brady suffered a season-ending knee injury in the season opener -- against the Chiefs. Cassel would have become a free agent during the offseason, so the Patriots hit him with the franchise tag as insurance in case Brady didn't fully recuperate. With Brady's recovery going well, New England opted to trade Cassel instead of paying the 2007 MVP's backup $14.65 million for one year. Cassel reportedly was part of a proposed three-team trade that would have sent him to Denver and Broncos starter Jay Cutler to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- a rumor that left Cutler feeling a little sour. That deal apparently fell through, and Kansas City was the beneficiary, acquiring a quarterback who threw for 3,693 yards and 21 touchdowns for what amounts to little compensation. "He's a guy with just one year of experience, but he's coming from a good system and a place where they've done a good job of winning games in the NFL," Haley said. "Anytime you can get a player that's been around winning, I think that's a good thing." Cassel for a second-round draft pick probably would be seen as a steal. Adding Vrabel, too? That seems like tunnel-under-the-floor bank-heist stuff -- again, on paper. Though on the downside of his 12-year NFL career, Vrabel will provide a veteran presence to a 2-14 team that was the youngest in the league last season. He also should give the Chiefs some help with a pass rush that had an NFL-record-low 10 sacks in 2008. The Patriots, whose only comments on the trade were in a statement issued Saturday, cleared $4.3 million from the salary cap by trading Vrabel, a 34-year-old entering the last year of his contract. "He plays physical, he's a true pro in every sense of the word and, again, you get a guy who's used to winning," Haley said. "Around a young team like we have, I think that's a valuable asset to have on your team. I'm happy to have both guys on this team." Especially at these prices.

Just n FYI...One spot...we pick 36th we rotate with Seattle each round.
But that is an interesting development but really doesn't change too much cause Pioli would have been just as damaging to us regarding GENERAL SYSTEM n PHILOSOPHY...I really think their Intent (either one to Screw Mangini) if it does so and is in their BEST INTEREST for THEIR team...I'm sure they will a little.
But with either Pats there or KC if the trade was not made...what might be a shame is what chance will we have if we were lucky to have Clay Matthews III drop to 35 and get to #36. Not to Screw Mangini...but a steal for our System would be a Steal for theirs!!

EO.
My true concern is actually with the first round. I want so badly for Curry to fall to us at number five. But with the Cassell signing in KC, it looks more and more like KC will get him at number 3. The disguising factor in all of this is that Vrabel was pretty much given to Pioli as a gift. Perhaps to disguise the fact that Curry is even a target for them. I truly hope they grab Crabtree at 3. But Belicheck doesn't seem to be the type to let Spygate rest without retaliation. Again, JMHO.

Bill Belichick isn't going to give anybody a gift... I'll bet he doesn't even buy his own wife gifts.. he certainly isn't going to give away a guy that can help the Patriots just to disguise something so one team can get one over on a guy he doesn't like in the draft.. do you realize how far fetched that sounds?
Mike Vrabel is going on 34 years old and is making $3.2Million this year (will be a FA the year after this one) and is barely an every down LB any more... He's on the verge of being relegated to pass rush specialist and he had 3 sacks last year. It's quite possible that Bill wanted to clear out that roster spot and that cash so he could make a move of his own... Sort of like the NBA, he's getting rid of an expiring contract and maybe he learned something from the Kosar incident and decided to not just announce that Vrabel has diminishing skills... ... That's purely hypothetical but seems to make a lot more sense than he was just being nice to Pioli or trying to spite Mangini....

Plus, I think it was likely before Cassel was traded that Curry would be gone before we got to pick anyway. So I doubt that Billy boy did this trade just to *ensure* that we don't get a guy we want but will likely not be there anyway.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Solid pull....Mumbles isn't going to do anything that benefits someone else, or another team in his conference...he is going to do whatever benefits his club.

The problenm is you can't keep two QB's who are 180 degrees apart, both must be on the same page, in order for the system to work. You can't have an acurate control type winning QB, and a radical gunslinger to replace him. Oil and water simply put, do not mix. We need another control type QB like BQ and get rid of the guy who makes all the radical bad decisions and throws. It would be fine to keep both of them, if they were the same type of QB, but they are totally light years apart and will only make things worse for the OL and every other part of the "O". One of the two MUST GO, in order for this team to be sucessful, so the line blocking and all of the "O" schemes are the same no matter who is in the game at QB, otherwise it simply won't work out. It's just not good planning to have two totally differnt systems for all the "O" to learn, we need one good system not two half *ss ones, that only half work.

I see things differently. Perhaps things will be somewhere in the middle, in a place where both QBs can be evaluated. I know folks are all but certain BQ is starting, and I'm cool with it. I wish him well, since i'm a browns fan. If DA isn't traded why is it so bad he stays? Despite his the holes in his game, I sure he can learn enough to step in if needed.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

I think what he's saying is that it's best if your two QBs are suited for the same sort of offensive scheme, so when one goes down and you have to use the other, you're still running the same plays. Each QB doesn't have his own playbook.
DA can learn and improve, but he won't be the same style QB as Quinn. As he shouldn't be.

J/C Didn't want to start another thread because I'm sure you all don't want a bunch of threads pertaining to the Chiefs.
Have a question about a former Brown.
Chiefs signed CJ Jones yesterday. I remember you guys talking about him on the old board, but don't recall the opinions of him. He looks like a good special teams guy which the Chiefs have lackedd since Dante Hall, but for a team that is hurting at WR depth and in real need of a true #2 WR I was just curious what to expect out of him. So whats your thoughts?
