NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory reported that the asteroid zoomed past Monday morning. The asteroid named 2009 DD45 was about 48,800 miles from Earth. That is just twice the height of some telecommunications satellites and about a fifth of the distance to the Moon. The space ball measured between 69 feet and 154 feet in diameter. The Planetary Society said that made it the same size as an asteroid that exploded over Siberia in 1908 and leveled more than 800 square miles of forest. Most people probably didn't notice the cosmic close call. The asteroid was only spotted two days ago and at its closest point passed over the Pacific Ocean near Tahiti.

They only spotted it two days ago???? How in the world will we be able to train oil drillers and then fly them abord the asteroid to drill a hole for a nuke in two days?? WTF!

Hey these are the same people that landed a man on the moon in 1969, but took several more decades to realize wheels on luggage would be a great idea.

Had this sucker hit over a major city, it would have destroyed most of the city and almost all life within 10 square miles. Dang, close call. I'm sure there's one with our name on it the split second the Browns attempt to kneel the ball down in the Super Bowl for the win.

it goes to show you how vulnerable we are. we would have had two day notice before a city was possibly leveled. heck, OSU could be leveled by the time im done typing this. phewwww, still here

And that's only near ground zero. Like the article says, an asteroid this size leveled trees over 800 square miles. We not just talking an evacuation of the main downtown area.....that's three times bigger than Chicago.
It's not like astronomers can really track these things. They don't emit their own light and are normally coming from the outer edge of our solar system (which doesn't have a nice lighted backdrop).
Scary stuff.

It appears that the west end of that asterroid is DDD. Could just be an optical delusion.
Asterriods are never symmetrical.

Actually the artical is wrong to state that it was an asteroid that exploded over Siberia. They actually don't know what hit. An asteroid was suspected but it could have been a comet or something else. They excavated all around the epicenter of the blast and found no evidence of an asteroid remains.
What ever did hit was very powerfull. It made the night sky in London look like day time and tremors from the blast were felt in Australia. Deffinatly some scary stuff.

The odds of an asteroid hitting a major metropolitan area are pretty slim to begin with. I think people forget how big the Earth really is. Over 70% of it is water. Of the 30% of land left, very little of it is dense urban areas.

Yup, I saw some History channel thing on that event and the consensus was that the asteroid/comet/space ship (:p) exploded as it hit the thicker part of the atmosphere. There was essentially nothing left behind after the explosion. Forgot about the effects in London and all over the world. Weird stuff.

All we'd have to do is send you up in a triangular shaped ship, and we'd be good to go!

I would only be confident shooting that sucker apart if the asteroid was two-dimensional. If it's more that two, I'm lost man. And that record was set months ago. I was a completely different person then. I'll need to start training...

Actually there were many closer. In 1989 the asteroid named 4581 Asclepius missed us by 6 hours. It passed through our orbit in the exact dead center spot the Earth was at 6 hours earlier.
They said if it had hit it would have been equivilant to the Hiroshima bomb going off every second for 50 days.
To think about one hitting is very scary but the chances are very miniscule.

The chances are small, yet, the time will come when a celestial body impact will happen. I just hope the race as a whole has become space faring at that point, because things will get tough otherwise.

Holy cow! You may be on to something. If we send them out to tag all the asteroids, they could be gone for millions of years. That would give us tons of time without reactionary science, global warming, mini iceages and carbon footprints. By the time they came back, we would have sustainable energy and building materials, more money in our pockets and be more happy in general.
