Checked ESPN.com ... and it is a record for teams playing the Yankees:

NEW YORK -- Asdrubal Cabrera hit his first career grand slam and drove in five runs Saturday as the Cleveland Indians scored 14 runs in the second inning, the biggest inning ever against the New York Yankees.

It was the most runs by a major league team in an inning since the Boston Red Sox scored 14 in the first against the Florida Marlins on June 27, 2003, at Fenway Park, according to STATS LLC.

I think I heard them say in the 50's someone scored 17 runs.....

Funny, they showed the cardinals dugout when they saw the 14 spot put up on the board and they were wondering if they ran out of 5's?

I don't worry. Wedge needs to be the one to worry...if he is 15 out by the end of May, he's gone.

The team can't keep starting slowly, needing to play .700 baseball the second half of the season.

The team needs to start winning some of the "key 42".

In baseball, everybody is going to win 60 and lose 60. The key 42 determines who finally wins.

I didn't get to watch the game but the interesting thing about it is.

On April 18th 2009 the Cleveland Indians, and Cleveland Cavaliers each beat one of they're most hated rivals byt EXACTLY 18 points. It's an Omen.

What makes it even crazier for me is I skipped watching both so I could go play 18 holes.

Now imagine IF all these Brady Quinn rumors were true and we would have ended up trading Brady Quinn yesterday for Denver's 18th pick in the draft. That would just be crazy.

Holy cow, that would be crazy! I was just joking yesterday about how it was a great day for Cleveland, and the only thing that would make it better would be finding out we traded Braylon Edwards for 3 first rounders.

Trading Quinn for the 18th would be just eerie!

Our relief pitching is atrocious. Atrocious. Unless we can score 22 every night, this team will not finish above .500 with the current pitching staff. It's a joke.

As soon as our starter sits, if we're not ahead by 5 runs, I assume it's a loss.

And the problem is our starters aren't lasting long enough. We have to go to our bullpen so early. Hey, at least Wood did well today.

Starting pitching wasn't the problem today, Pavano gave up 1 run on 4 hits threw 6 innings. This one is on Wedge! I was bummed when Perez came out to start the 7th.

tough loss

Is that 14 runs a record?

In the new ballpark it is, it tops a 9 run inning from a couple days before.

The opening series in new Yankee Stadium will be remembered for the Indians running up the score on those two big innings. That's all nice and good but we left town with a split in the series despite outscoring them 40-19. And if you remember in that 22-0 blasting from years ago, we didn't win the series 2-1 there either.

I'd rather have won three or four games than set any inning records.

Splitting a 4 game series with the Yankees on the road is a success regardless of how many runs you score in the wins or losses.... Especially when you consider the emotions and excitement of the new stadium and all...

But you are right, the Indians need to develop some consistency and go on about a 5 game win streak and get this thing close to .500....

A 4-run 8th and 1-2-3 9th from Wood gives the Tribe a 5-2 win today. It stinks that the bats gave NOTHING to Lee last night but oh well.

Tribe Wins 5-2!

Sizemore with a 3 run HR in the 8th.

Kerry Wood with a 1-2-3 9th for his 3rd save. I'm really liking Kerry as our closer, He comes in throws 97mph heat and doesn't look back.

Tribe wins it's 1st series on the season....

Pitching coming around?
One can sure hope so. 5-3 in our last 8.

W L GB RS RA
Detroit 8 7 - 89 75
Chicago Sox 8 7 - 75 65
Kansas City 8 7 - 61 51
Minnesota 7 9 1.5 66 97
Cleveland 6 10 2.5 96 98

And as bad as we've been, only 2.5 games back. Big series with Minny starts tonight.

I'm watching Cliff Lee pitch right now, thanks to TV from Boston. Never watched him pitch before. He's been very good, and it's nice that the Boston TV announcers are fair, objective and not out-and-out homers.

Oh what in the hell is wrong with Shoppach? Trying to win the damn game with one swing, going after stuff at his damn neck....

Laid off of that one thankfully.

But not the one at his shoelaces.....

I repeat my previous claim: If we're not up by five runs by the time the starter sits, we lose. This is the worst bullpen in the history of baseball.

J/C ... Another ex-Indians farmhand comes back to beat us ... or leaves here and becomes a future HOF'er. That seems to happen a lot. I wonder if God thinks Cleveland sports fans lack a sense of irony? He needn't worry ...

I wish I wasn't so right. Pavano left, we were up exactly five. we won by one run. Our bullpen gives up four runs a night, take it to the bank.

Maybe I'm crazy, but if you have a bull pen with a guy with an ERA of 13.5, and a guy with an ERA of 0.0, which one do you put in? If you said they guy with 13.5, you're Eric Wedge.

i really don't think this one is on wedge.

he's not the greatest manager on the planet. but anyone who thinks you can win with this roster is crazy. the pitching staff isn't what it used to be.

i put this on mark shapiro more than wedge.

minus cc, minus byrd, and knowing westbrook won't be back until july/august? and you're answer is carl pavano?

fail.

I don't really understand this logic....the problem was clear last year, the bullpen. They tried overhauling it and it sucks once again. You can't win ballgames even with quality starters if your bullpen then gives up several runs.

they didn't really overhaul it. they just brought in kerry wood, who has been a nice addition, it's too bad they can't ever hand him the ball.

they're inconsistent. and shapiro knows it.

i honestly see this team getting it together and playing better, but who knows when that is and if it will be too late.

i just think pointing at wedge isn't gonna do anything. you bring another manager in here and he still has this average roster to work with.

I think the pitching is going to come around soon. If we can keep the run production up then we will be in the race for the division.

Right now we are only 3.5 games back.

From today's Plain Dealer:

INDIANS INSIDER

Cleveland Indians' Matt LaPorta among five called up from Columbus

Saturday, May 02, 2009

Detroit- The Indians, after an 8-14 April, started May with a bang in more ways than one.

First, they beat Detroit, 6-5, Friday night. Then they called up outfielder Matt LaPorta and infielders Luis Valbuena and Josh Barfield from Class AAA Columbus. To make room, outfielder Trevor Crowe was optioned to Columbus, reliever Joe Smith was placed on the disabled list with a strained right rotator cuff and utility man Tony Graffanino was designated for assignment.

David Dellucci was activated Friday afternoon from his rehab assignment in Columbus. He started at DH against the Tigers and had four hits.

"Barfield will be in the role that he did in spring training," said Wedge, referring to Barfield's new job as a utility player. "Valbuena will help us on the left side of the infield. LaPorta has been swinging the bat well, and he'll complement Dellucci."

Wedge added that LaPorta, the key player acquired from Milwaukee in July for CC Sabathia, was coming to play.

"He's coming up here for us to watch him play," said Wedge.

During the Indians' poor April, Wedge made veiled threats that such changes could be coming. They were veiled because whenever he expressed his displeasure at what he was watching on the field, he would be asked if he meant making changes at the big-league level.

Wedge always responded, "I'm talking about the players here getting better."

Now the Indians' roster has been shaken, not stirred.

Dellucci's arrival was hardly a bolt from the blue. Especially with DH Travis Hafner going on the disabled list Wednesday with a sore right shoulder.

The arrivals of Valbuena and Barfield aren't shocks, either. The Indians have not been happy with their defense, particularly in the infield.

But LaPorta's arrival is big news. Early in the week, with LaPorta hammering International League pitching, the Indians downplayed any chance of him coming up. But with Hafner's injury and a slow start becoming slower, opinions changed.

LaPorta is hitting .333 (25-for-75) with four doubles, two triples, five homers and 14 RBI. He has an OPS (on base percentage plus slugging percentage) of 1.054.

Valbuena is hitting .321 (25-for-78) with four doubles, two triples, three homers and 13 RBI. He has an OPS of .975 and has played 12 games at second, five at third and five at shortstop, while making one error.

Barfield is hitting .306 (15-for-49) with three doubles and 11 RBI. He has an OPS of .701 and has played nine games at second and four in the outfield. Barfield has made three errors.

Wedge said Smith developed some shoulder soreness in spring training. They want to give him a break to get the soreness out of his shoulder.
