Thought I was late to the party on this one as I heard it on the radio about 30 minutes ago. If you click on the link, there's also a video. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4047667Quote:
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers extended the contract of their newest acquisition, Kellen Winslow Jr., by giving him the biggest contract for a tight end in NFL history.
Kellen Winslow speaks to the media after being traded from Cleveland to Tampa Bay.
Winslow, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, agreed to a six-year, $36.1 million deal that includes $20.1 million in guarantees. With incentives, the deal could grow to $42.1 million.
The Bucs acquired Winslow in a trade with the Cleveland Browns last month. He was the sixth pick in the 2004 draft, rated as one of the best tight ends to go from college to the pros. His knee was damaged severely in a 2005 motorcycle accident, but after his recover, Winslow re-established himself as one of the league's top tight ends.
Now, he's paid like that.

Wow ......... Good luck with that Bucs. With his knee, I have a feeling that he won't see year 3 of that deal.

I think there's a possibility that Winslow can still have a long career. He may not be as dynamic, but if anyone will take it down to the wire - who will stretch it as far as it will go - I think it will be him. Desire, love of the game, and the want to compete.
I wish things would have worked out for him here.

when i saw this headline i thought he got a "record deal" like as a rapper hahah
I say good for K2, the guy played his butt off for us each game, im glad he got the payday he was after. i still wish it would have been with the browns, but his knee is suspect and i suppose we had to strike a deal whie we could. I still wonder what the other pick can escalate to?

Good for Kellen. I always liked the way he played, and he never criticized his own teammates. I like that.
Winslow would have been one of the best had it not been for the accident then staph infection. Unfortunately he's getting top dollar to be a one-dimensional player. He cannot run block for his life anymore, and he's not a good pass blocker either. He has lost a step speed wise and it's made him less of a vertical threat.
One of my fav players, but we def got out in time if this is the kind of contract he was looking for

Their so far under the salary cap it probaly is worth the gamble for them.
For us im glad we dealt him when we did. We get the much needed draft picks and don't have to deal with him wanting that type of contract.

If you take away his stupid ass mistake on the motercycle, he would still be a cleveland brown. It's a shame that is not what happened....*sigh*
Good for K2....if he is playing football towards the end of this deal i bet you it's because he is still good. It's prolly unlikely given his knee condition...but i hope he is still doing good
goodluck to both k2 n the bucs.

good for you and good luck Kellen.
Thanks for playing your butt off as a brown.
Hopefully you left them enough $$$ to get a QB! I know you remember luke mccown.

For once I'm glad that we unloaded a player who got paid megabucks rather than paying megabucks for a player that we acquire.

Being in Tampa may extend his career a couple years, the warmer climate will be much easier on his knee.

Good for KW2. He was a Brown who had a lot of guts and even with his stupid motorcycle accident, at least he played hard in Cleveland & caught a lot of balls when he was healthy enough to play. I understood the trade (to an extent, I also think it might be shortsighted to trade away the best pass-catching guy on the team but whatever).
He might have a limited career, but he was a warrior when he hit the field at CBS. No one can dispute that.

I don't get it. The "League's Top Tight End." "Deserves the Big Money." But we didn't keep him,...?? I'm glad he's gone. Not the talent,...but the man.

Hey .... how many draft picks does Tampa have left anyway? Maybe we can trade them a QB. Winslow wants Anderson, of course ..... that's why he so openly campaigned for Quinn to get the Browns job ..... LOL

If he plays to his abilities and manages to stay healthy the Bucs did very well. If it turns out how we expect it to turn out, the Bucs might be very sorry.

Good for Junior, I hope everything works out for him. He played his tail off when he was here, and that's what I'll remember him by.

Per Mike Florio, Winslow is due a $5.17 million base salary in 2009 that is fully guaranteed for skill, injury, and salary cap. In 2010, Winslow is due a $6.725 million base salary that is guaranteed for skill and injury, but not for cap reasons. In 2011, Winslow is due to make an $8.29 million base salary. That contract figure is only guaranteed for injuries. http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/04/06/buccaneers-sign-winslow-to-new-deal/

Hey, best of luck to Winslow. He's one player who, if TB plays Cleveland in Cleveland in the next few years, I'll clap for the guy when he runs onto the field at the beginning of the game. He's a goof, but he gave 100% on the field (well, except when it came to blocking). He never really trashed the team (except Savage with the staph thing) and he's taking the high road now regarding the Browns.
Best of luck to him except when he's playing us.

"the accident then staph infection."
What Staph Infection??? I can't recollect anything regarding Staph Infection and the surgeries he had on his knee from the Accident.
I know there was one last season but we don't know what that was all about as he got it during the Week off private activities and off site of Berea. Thought I knew it was ... piercing that got infected...but that was info from B so who knows???
His total destruction of the knee had nothing to do with Staph Infection. ALL JOCK ROCKET related. He basically obliterated that knee...smashed it to smitherines... Its amazing he is doing what he's doing on it.
But all the surgeries he's had on the knee afterwards had nothing to do with Staph???

Oh and Good luck to him - of course this just FEEDS the DEVIL AGENT more

Well, he did get a staph infection after he got in the accident, right? It was a couple years, but it was after. So maybe he didn't mean they were at the same/close time?

check here It references his staph infection after the motorcycle accident, even though it's an article about the spat with savage.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

Remains to be seen. Hard to imagine what results one expects for $20 M plus in my book. Then I have to imagine what twice the number in incentives would represent. Consider what one is expected to do in the course of an NFL Sunday business day, what you do as your job; imagine what is left to chance to a degree beyond the norm that can be 'incentivized' to make up a word in businessland parlance. Must be able to walk on water, and perform miracles as required. Good for him; good luck getting the money's worth out the knee before time runs out. I wish him well, but can't imagine the same degree of impact the Bunkynear's need to justify this cash out. But I am sitting at home, meh, what do I know?

Didn't the Bucs make Jeff Faine the highest paid Center in the league as well.
2 former first round Brown picks...both made highest paid at their position by the Bucs? Wonder what the odds of that happening were?

At least they have a (kinda) recent Super Bowl win.

Considering that oddity you have to figure that BQ and BE are both yearning to be traded to the bucs!

I wish him good luck, but don't understand the big contract.
He couldn't practice here because of the knee, causing him to mess up alot in formations. He couldn't block because of his knee, and was a liability in the running game. He had many stupid penalties this past season also, causling many a drive to be interupted. These are all things that make me wonder why he's getting paid so much.
If he can't practice, I wonder how successful he will be learning a new offense. He was coddled here during the week, I can't see how he can just learn the offense by watching.
Oh well Rosenhaus was a good move for him. He's got his big payday, and a team with a nicer logo.....I couldn't believe that was one of his first comments about Tampa Bay.
Does Tampa play on turf or grass? I would think turf would be harder on his knees.
I wish him well, but as soon as he's on the field for Tampa, I could care less about how good he plays, and when we play them, I hope he sucks.

Just Clickin' I share the sentiments of most people that I am glad he got his payday, just not that kind of money by US. I can't stand the fact that he didn't block well and with his injury history you have to just wonder what they are basing the need for this outrageous contract. On a separate note, I wonder if I hire Drew Rosenhaus he can get me a massive raise at work. I mean if he did this for KWII, I think I should at least be making $30.00 hour making pizza with $20.00 guarenteed...
