I happen to think the guy has some leadership qualities. I'm not saying he's the best or anything in that regard...but he showed a lot of poise in terms of dealing with hostile fans, hostile media, a raw deal benching, a wide receiver who ran his mouth and constantly dropped gift-wrapped touchdowns.
I was actually surprised that he bit his tongue on Braylon as long as he did...guy stood up and took the blame for a lot of BE's screw ups.

Giants | Tuck believes Edwards would be good fit Tue, 21 Apr 2009 13:21:17 -0700
Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News, reports New York Giants DE Justin Tuck said he believes Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards would fit in with the Giants if he were acquired. "I think so," Tuck said. "I know Braylon is not the type of guy to be a look-at-me type of player. From what I know about him, he comes to work every day, he keeps his mouth closed. You don't hear a lot of things about him off the football field. I think that's the type of guy (we need), especially in an environment like New York City where you can get caught up in all the lights. You need to focus on what your primary job is. Do I think he's a good fit here? Quite possibly, yes."
I think they cut off the part at the endof the interview where he started laughing and said "Ok, ok, I can't do this with a straight face anymore!"

DA was actually playing his best ball of the season at the time he was benched. Which wasn't much at all...but he was progressing. I guess progression is easy when you're playing as bad as he was, but he was gaining more steam than he was floundering.
The reason for the move was that the braintrust wanted to quiet the boos and saw the Donks game as a way to ease Quinn in gracefully.
No one in their right mind could've actually thought that Quinn was going to do anything for us at that point in the season except get himself injured. I can't think of a QB in the NFL - past or present - who could move chains with that surrounding cast. It wasn't DA that was killing us, it was a ... poor offense. So they threw the kid in to quiet the crying.
In that respect, it was a raw deal. I also think it was a raw deal for Quinn in a sense...he was getting thrown to the wolves...I've always believed that if you've got a potential prospect, you don't send him out to get killed in the name of experience...the last regime had to know Brady was going to get mauled....no one to throw to, a shoddy line and a middling run game. It was a PR move.
I thought Couch got a raw deal, too...don't think he would've amounted to much, but the way he hit the pine wasn't to my liking. JMHO.

that's good for a laugh or maybe Tuck is just sending out a warning- if you come to the giants, best leave that behind in Cleveland......

WOW .... he upgraded from HORRIBLE to CRAPPY ... thats the kind of improvement I'm looking for ..

Or maybe they wanted to see what BQ could do and the TIMING WAS RIGHT ... I mean when u have a QB "progressing" like DA was ... why wouldn't u want to give someone else a chance .....
DA was a PART OF THE PROBLEM and he was someone where we had a PLAYER WAITING IN THE WINGS .. what were we suppose to do .. just keep riding the DUD ... please ... give me a break ..

There was ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with the supporting cast at that point ... NOTHING ..... the injuries did not start till WELL AFTER THAT ...
thats just a BS EXCUSE ... were some guys playing poorly (especially the ones from Fichigan) ... ABSOLUTELY ... but guess what .. the DUCK was one of them also .. he had played PRETTY BADLY up till then ..
Quote:

OR maybe it was because BQ is WAY MORE MOBILE, makes quicker decisions and is more decisive ...
AND that the entire Offense had played poorly (INCLUDING DA .. I will not blame DA for the woes on our O last year . it was a GROUP EFFORT .. but DA played PRETTY DAMM POOR and needs to shoulder his share of the blame) .. so maybe the kid could provide a spark ..
AND the fact that BQ was a very viable alternative to the MOST IMPORTANT position on the O ... i mean who would we have put in if we sat Brey ... or Hadnot or Lewis?? .. what were our other OPTIONS .. no one else had a VIABLE BACK UP ...
and BTW . the OL had not pass blocked "poorly" up till then ..... the main problem in the first 7 or 8 games was as follows on O .. and in no particular order
1. Run Blocking ..
2. D's taking away DA's vertical game and making him complete SHORT PASSES on a CONSISTENT BASIS to sustain a drive ..
3. Drops
4. DA being innacurate and making bad decisions ..
the pass blocking on the OL did not fall apart until the Jills game .. and that was cause they could not pick up a blitz or account for Stroud lining up and moving all over the place to save there lives .. they either missed a million assignments or they were just calling out the wrong assingments at the line or not making the proper adjustments .. they PASS BLOCKED HORRIBLY in that game ..
Quote:
I thought Couch got a raw deal,
I do too .. but not for the same reasons U do .. he had NO TALENT AT ALL AROUND HIM .. NONE ..
I am not sure there was one guy on the team in Timid's first two years that could have made the two deep on last years team much less started ... and it never got a hole lot better in Timids time here .. he may have never played with anyone on his O that could have started last year ...
thats why Timid got a raw deal IMO ..

"Too bad Quinn couldn't follow suit. He still managed to complete 50% of his 5 yard passes though!"
Hey to each their own...if you wish to assess his stats with really one game the Bronco's game actually he did just fine. You wish to put your UNBIASED cough: cough: CREDIBILITY (know thats funny ) on the line by taking another 6 quarters of stats with him playing with a fracture in his Index finger on the throwing hand (and tell me now it would not make a difference ) go right ahead.
All I have assessed with DA is from 27 games as a starter...pretty good data base considering it also spanned 3 seasons to assess his maturation.
So I know you were joking but you and I both know you really think that
later and look me up in a QB debate. oh and the 50% thing is that a fact on his pct of 5 yard passes or something you just made up - as usual

I wonder if 3 years ago when the Browns traded to get Brady Quinn, how many people would have declared him the starter at least by year 2?Probally 85%. Its year 3 now and Quinn still can't secure the starting QB job. Its apparent BQ has some glaring flaws in his game thats hindering his attempts to be the #1 QB in Berea.

It's not that simple... there were a lot of things that happened that led to the situation we have now. starting with his holdout... Frye's meltdown... DA's surpriuse "Pro Bowl" year.... the contract DA got after 2007 and being given the starting job by Phil/RAC. I'm just glad we'll know a lot more in about 75 hours.

I know what you mean but we should wait until year 3 begins before saying he can't secure the spot. He may be under center week 1.
I don't think we can believe much of anything that does or doesn't come out of Berea right now regarding the depth chart. To me, it makes perfect sense a new coach might not want a young QB that wasn't drafted under his watch. It also makes senses that that coach could learn to like his talents and feel safe with him under center. Right now, it's too early to tell what Mangini will do.
As someone else said above me, we'll get a better idea after this weekend. However, even then....we may still be guessing who the #1 guy is.
I'd be willing to be both our current QB's will be on the roster throughout this season. Mangini will have an open competition and Quinn will win out by a hair.

Thats why I don't understand about fans..... You want to draft a QB and let him mature under another QB so he won't just be thrown into the fire... but then if they are not the clear starter by year 2 or 3.... he's garbage... This confuses the freak out of me...

I'm with you. This will be his 3rd year, the magic number that is always thrown around as the amount of time for players to develop.
These guys bashing Quinn IMO have no basis for it. One game healthy and two injured. They say he sucks, yet think he will get traded for 1st round picks
There is so much BS being declared in this thread it's maddening.
I don't claim to know how good the guy will be, but if he sucks as bad as some of these jokers proclaim, then why in the world would any team be interested in trading for him to be their starter while he has only started three games.
Some say he was good in college and that means nothing , good pros usually are good college players. Sure some bust, but most don't. DA is a known commodity, and that's why his value is lacking and teams want Quinn instead. But for some here, they twist that to mean that Mangini doesn't like Quinn and will trade him.
Every scenario with credibility has had other teams asking about Quinn, not Mangini offering him. Yet it still is twisted as Mangini not "enamoured with him" or the FO isn't sold on him.
So in many's thought process, a rookie at #5 with 16 games total experience on a loaded team is somehow going to excell, while a player in his 3rd year of learning and with starting experience won't.
The agenda's and BS are so deep it's unbelievable. God please make it Saturday quickly.
I can see it already, Sanchez is picked before our pick, and the same suspects will claim that Quinn is the starter only because Sanchez was gone. It will never end

The new regime has made it a point to gather as many draft picks as possible. Hence why everyone on the team except for Joe Thomas has been mentioned in trade rumors.
Now seeing how desperate we are for draft picks, and how rumor rampant everything is right now. Why haven't we heard any DA rumors?
NFL teams do not want him at his current contract, and nobody is going to give anything of any value to obtain him. If somebody would have offered a 3rd for him, by now he would be gone. Nobody wants to give us squat, and yet some NFL teams are calling about Quinn, and continue to call.
Can't wait till next monday, Quinn will still be here, and all this total bull about Quinn and DA can be somewhat laid to rest.

Who cares what people will say?
In the end we will know if Quinn is good or not. He either will play or won't. That's the beauty of it. The people on one side of this argument will eventually be proven wrong.

And D'Qwell.
Thomas and Jackson I guess are off limits. The rest are fair game.
I would hope Rogers and Cribbs were included on that list.

I haven't heard a Quinn to the Jets rumor yet ...... http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/story/11663399From Cleveland to New York Despite having recently invested first-round picks at the positions, the Cleveland Browns are reportedly going to draft Southern California quarterback Mark Sanchez or Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree with the fifth pick. Sources within the league have told me the Browns are actively shopping quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson and wide receiver Braylon Edwards, and will trade at least one based on which rookie player is selected in the first round. Some have suggested that if the Browns draft Sanchez, Quinn could be headed to Denver. My sources believe instead that Cleveland will trade Quinn to a team Eric Mangini knows quite well -- the New York Jets. Should the Browns draft Crabtree, the long-rumored Edwards deal to the New York Giants will occur instead.

Quinn wasn't drafted to sit and develop for three years. He was drafted because he was touted as being "NFL ready" and would be able to come in and be the starter from day one. He screwed that up with his holdout.

that's ultimately it. no one "blames" him for holding out, as it's part of the business, but he really hurt his chances. what did he hold out for? they were $500k apart and wanted some other escalators...but what good are those if you can't see the field? he's learning that now. terrible call and a terrible move to go with condon. if only quinn knew that condon wasn't doing things in quinn's best interest but to help himself with the next year's clients.

Yeah, it's posted in another thread, but in a whole article. It kind of makes sense. NY is hoping Freeman falls far enough so they can snatch him. If he doesn't, the phone may start to ring. And if it does...... ..... give them DA for a 3rd.

Nobody wanted Quinn to sit behind Frye and DA. By that point we knew Frye was garbage, and all we'd seen from DA was the four starts (and a quarter against KC) he got when Frye injured his wrist. The pre-season question wasn't if, but when, Quinn would take over the starting role in 2007.

Actually .... many people defended Frye right up till the time he got pulled in that first game. (and his last in a Browns uniform)
IIRC, some even defended him following that debacle.

No deal: Giants don't expect to land Edwards
The Braylon Edwards deal, which many people around the NFL believed was all-but done, now appears to be all-but dead.
According to a source familiar with the situation, the Giants no longer see any hope of acquiring the Cleveland receiver and are moving forward with their plans to take a receiver early in the NFL draft. The sticking point still appears to be GM Jerry Reese’s refusal to part with the Giants’ first-round pick and the Browns’ refusal to take anything less.
It’s pretty much been that way since Reese and Browns GM George Kokinis first talked about Edwards in February, but until very recently there was at least some optimism inside the Giants’ organization that one of the two sides would blink. Reese has no plans to blink, the source said, and the Giants are now convinced that Kokinis won’t either.
So, barring a late drop in the Browns’ asking price - or a dramatic change of heart by Reese — the Giants will head into Day 1 of the draft focused on getting a receiver to help out a corps thinned by the losses of Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer. Several sources have said they almost certainly will take a receiver in Round 1, though there’s at least a small chance they’ll draft a linebacker, depending on how the first 28 picks break.
The Giants also have an interest in moving up in the first round, according to several team sources. With two second-round picks, two third-round picks and 10 picks overall, they certainly have the ammunition to do it, although given their position in the draft it’s not likely they’d be able to get inside the Top 15.

April 22, 2009 Kiwanuka and a first? Are they insane? I’ve told you before that the Cleveland Browns really wanted Mathias Kiwanuka from the Giants in return for Braylon Edwards, which was and is never going to happen, from what I’ve been told. It was perfectly reasonable for the Browns to ask for him, though. If only they had stopped there. According to ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio, the Browns’ initial demand for Edwards wasn’t just Kiwanuka. They wanted Kiwanuka AND the Giants’ first-round draft pick. As you might imagine, the talks stopped there. I don’t know how long the Browns held onto that dream, or even if they still think the Giants will … oh, I don’t know … maybe all show up high to their war room on Saturday. But if that’s really what they asked for, then you have to start questioning whether they ever wanted to make a deal in the first place. It also explains why several team sources continue to tell me that a deal isn’t as likely to happen as several reports have led all of us to believe. At the moment, it appears that a deal won’t happen unless the Browns drop their current demands — a first- and a third-rounder, from what I’ve been told — or GM Jerry Reese agrees to deal the Giants’ first-round pick, which he has apparently been resisting, as I told you earlier. Kiwanuka and the 29th overall pick … Why not toss in the Super Bowl XLII trophy, too? Or maybe a PSL to the new stadium. There are still a few of those available, from what I hear. http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2009/04/kiwanuka-and-a-first-are-they.html--------------------------------------------------------------- Kiwa AND their 1st really is too much....I just hope they made it clear they want Kiwa and take a lower round pick with him if the Giants re-open the talks in this direction...Kiwa+3rd would be a steal OTOH, if Reese is not willing to part with Kiwa OR a 1st...I applaud Kokinis for stopping the talks....I hope they settle for Kiwa + a 3rd or 4th or 5th This is either a Giants bluff to see if the Browns blink or they know something from BE´s agent....a 2nd and 5th is not enough..I´d rather take less should BE totally stink it up or holdout...I don´t care but a 2nd and 5th is a joke Reese seems to think that we desperately want to get rid of BE....this might be a situation where ManKok´s stubborness might be a good thing....what Reese forgets is: THEY wnat BE and THEY need him desperately (last 5 games wout Burress they stunk).... I think we won´t see a BE trade this weekend....maybe come TCamp time when all is settled and there isn´t such media hype around it...and maybe when they see Osi is 100% again and they can let Kiwa walk... as of now I think BE will begin the season as a Brown...if we´re really desperate for picks or getting rid of BE NOW...I´d call the Eagles and see if they offer a 2nd and a bunch of their late round picks...maybe a conditional 2010 pick too....just to screw the Giants, lol

I think the Giants over-value their first rounder....I mean just because it has the term "first round" attached......it doesn't make it the same value as say Cincinnati's First round pick. It wasn't all that long ago when their "First Round Pick" was actually a "Second Round Pick". I mean if Mathias Kiwanuka was playing for Detroit...do you think we would be asking for Kiwi and their first???? No we would be asking for Kiwi and their second....It is about where that first is located.....Now...is it too much....I don't know...maybe...probably...but a part of me is glad to see a GM that won't buckle and give in to weak deals like others we have had.
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...
What's the use of wearing your lucky rocketship underpants if nobody wants to see them????

I agree with those of you saying you're glad the GM isn't giving in.
We know there's a demand for a big WR like Edwards, especially for a team like the Giants. Therefore, we set the price. If you don't like it, fine, take a gamble with a WR in the draft.
Hey, I'm perfectly fine with keeping Edwards this year, even if we draft a guy like Crabtree. I have to think that Edwards knows this is a contract year, so he is going to play accordingly. The $$$ signs will be in his head more than his dropsies. Then, if he truly wants to play here, then we re-sign him. If we have a guy like Crabtree, we don't re-sign him. Or, we do and have a great WR tandem (albeit an expensive one).
But, in the end, we shouldn't just trade the guy for a song just because we feel like we have to be doing something. That's what got me about Savage sometimes. It seemed like he couldn't sit still. Trade here, sign this guy. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

"I wonder if 3 years ago when the Browns traded to get Brady Quinn"
Just a note...seems longer but that was just 2 years ago.

I'm glad ManKok is driving a hard bargain for Braylon here.
Kiwi + 2nd, you have a deal.
1st and 3rd, you have a deal.
Otherwise, I want to keep Braylon.

I'd still like to know if he's even trying to trade him or if they are just fielding offers.. there is a difference ya know...
