Well, all of our players have big contracts with the possible exceptions of D'Qwell and Wright.

Also, as many have said, how much longer does Cribbs have? The reason he's a good ST player is he is a kamikaze. Eventually (and probably sooner rather than later), his body is just plain going to wear out.
So, I can't blame him for wanting as much money right now as he can get. And, I have to think his playing career will be lengthened if he gets to play offense or defense.
But, right now, his biggest worth is as a ST player, plain and simple. Until he can prove that he can be more, he should be paid as a ST player alone. JMHO
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

If he wants Hester money, forget it.
But he does deserve a new contract. That I will say.

Well, if they're looking for the surest way to alienate the entire fanbase, trading Cribbs would be it.
That made me chuckle for some reason. It seems as though they've done oh about 1000 things thus far to alienate the fanbase since 1999. This would simply be 1001 but we'd be really really upset! if they do 1002. Then when they do that and they keep cashing our checks when 1002-1500 occur then we change the front office and coaches again, then the fanbase gets excited again over the potential promise of an unknown draft class and we start the process over again.
That is until we get really really really upset with the current direction. And then!!! Then!!!
We'll do nothing again.

It's believed Cribbs would be amenable to a contract laced with incentives tied to his participation on the offensive side of the ball.
Do this and move on. He has OBVIOUSLY deserved the opportunity to earn more based on performance. IMHO, they should can the squabbling right now and get it done, then get back to work. If not, it becomes just another stupid mess the team has created for itself. They need to get out their own way and do the right thing. Again, JMHO.

Don't complain about the people using the system....complain about the system.
I'm not complaining about anything, just giving my perspective. I think I've made my point known he deserves more money, thats a given, I do think he's doing it the wrong way, if thats the reason for his not showing up. To me respect isnt something handed out because you say you should have it, or think you deserve it, respect is something earned because of your actions on & off the field towards others, but thats just my humble opinon. But once again not complaining, I have no control over the system or a say in the system, so complaining would be a waste of my time.

Offer him what would be a nice contract for a premier special teamer, and if he doesn't want it... Trade Him. Somebody will overpay for him and give us some nice picks, meanwhile we just train another to replace him. With the new rules on limiting the number of people in a wedge, his effectiveness on kickoffs will probably be reduced anyway... and we can get Harrison or someone else real shifty to return punts.

1. When I wrote what I did I thought he was not showing up to a mini-camp (scheduled) not a voluntary one. So not as critical as I first thought.
2. Randy has never been involved in Contracts and player negotiations...never. I'm sure Savage stated he'd be taken care of...after all he controlled the purse strings with Players and contracts. So the bit about RANDY renege on a monetary promise sounds typical AGENT CRAPOLA.
3. Hester got his 41 Mil and that is exactly when Cribbs started mentioning money. Hester was signed with that contract as a WR...and he's been their Play maker WR for over a year now.
4. What his name...the Purdue chicken reporter from ESPN, Clayton. He talks like he's a major cog at RB and WR. Well over 90% of his yardage is from Returns.
I still think Cribbs is making a mistake. Cause M/K I am sure likes him but if push comes to shove they will get rid of a Kick off returner in a heart beat if he comes off bigger than part of the team. In a Heart Beat.

You say "special teams guy" like he's Lennie freaking Friedman busting the wedge or something. Yeah, I think $4-5 million a year for 3 or 4 years is reasonable for a player who is one of the faces of the franchise, a team leader, the best return man in the game, one of the best at kickoff coverage in the game, and while he may never be more than a 3rd option at best as a receiver, is still a threat to run, pass, or catch the ball whenever he's in on offense. Not to mention he's one year removed from a Pro Bowl season where he put up the second highest total return yards in NFL history on a league-leading 30.7 yards per, and he's one of two guys that this franchise has had since its return who has done nothing put consistently produce. Ok, trade him away and let Syndric Steptoe and Gerard Lawson duke it out for the job. Heck, maybe we could bring back Kevin Kasper. Save the money so we can sign some more veteran free agents who can get injured in training camp and collect a paycheck for doing absolutely nothing.

We cant pay Cribbs what Hester got paid. Cribbs is a fantastic special teamer who plays in spots offensivelyon primarily gimmick plays. Hester was a full time DB.
I love Cribbs but the last thing we need right now is to make him the highest paid special teamer of all time.

Cut him and move on... Couldn't help it. Seriously, Cribbs deserves more and has been patient. He's also not worth Hester money... but neither is Hester. H should get 1.75 to 2.5 a year with a Probowl incentive. If nothing else M/K should make a formal statement that "they'll take care of him"... after all thats what he played for last year!

I love Cribbs, but he's just a special teamer. I agree with the others who say if he wants to get paid as a WR or S, he should be showing up and learning the position!

If he thought he was worth more than what he's being paid, he shouldn't have signed his contract in the first place.
Seriously, what does he want? Yes, he plays his butt off. Yes, he's great at what he does. But he's a special teamer. He isn't going to even be a WR this year IMO. He may take a few snaps on offense on some trick plays.
So he's basically a special teamer who plays a few snaps on offense.
If he wants to gauge himself, look at it that way. Look at guys who basically play special teams, and who gets paid well. Hester plays and starts as a WR, so Cribbs isn't in the same category at all. He really shouldn't get much more than he is. Because your a fan favorite doesn't mean you should be able to break your signed contract and ask for more. But I guess that's how it is these days.
And we can't say, oh there's talk of him playing on defense. It hasn't happened yet, if it does even happen, so that can't factor in to what he ''deserves.''
I just don't like the approach that he's taking. It's a voluntary camp- so he has the right to skip it. The team approach would be attend for the good of the club. But too many guys do things for the good of themselves.
If this extends beyond the "voluntary" camps, then I will be very disappointed in Josh.
He's a special teamer, not a WR. Let's call it what it is. He seen what Hester got, thinks he deserves more, though Hester returned more TDs than Cribbs, and is starting at WR.
So we can pay him like a special teamer, with an added bonus for his "few snaps" he's taken on offense. That's all he deserves to be paid as.
I'm the interim manager where I work. I was promoted from coordinator earlier this year, and will be in this position most likely the remainder of the year. I was rewarded for my hard work, and compensated for it. Though I do a lot and still would (of course) like more money, I was compensated well for the temporary position I took, and agreed upon it when I accepted. They aren't going to pay me like a director, they pay me well enough for the job that I am hired to do.

I just want to know what everyone who thinks he's doing the wrong thing believes he should be compensated. You know, since he's "just a special teams player".
If anybody thinks that Devin Hester is an all-around better contributor to his team than Cribbs is, they're nuts. He was a garbage DB, a garbage KO returner, and is currently being paid #1 WR money to be a garbage receiver. He returns a couple punts for TDs a year, and that's it. A more recent Dante Hall.

I don't think that Hester is all-around better than Cribbs.
BUT, he is something that Cribbs isn't which is a HUGE factor in all of this- he's a big contributor at a skilled position.
Cribbs takes a few snaps at WR a game. Hester is the #2-3 WR in their offense. Huge difference, as he is paid to be a STer and a WR. Cribbs doesn't do nearly enough IMO to be paid like a WR.
Back to your question- yes, Cribbs is an all-around better STer, as he covers as well as returns. And he does both well. But his WR skills leaves a lot to be desired. I can't see him getting much more money than what the top ST players make.

Remind me which position Hester makes such a big contribution to that is worth $10 million a year? His 665 receiving yards, good for 49th in the league? Sadly, he was the leading receiver on the Bears last year. Or is it his 13 career tackles? Or maybe the 670-some kickoff return yards he had last year?
Don't forget that Hester was a 2nd round draft pick at DB, a position which he quickly showed he couldn't play in the NFL.

Cribbs is going into his 5th season with the Browns.
he has 16 catches over that time.
He's had 40 carries.
He's largely been a non factor outside of special teams. On special teams, both his KO and PR averages dropped by 5 yards per this last year compared to the year before. I am seriously concerned about overdoing it with this kid (throwing him on offense and/or defense) and having his special teams performance suffer.

Which is why he should be paid as a special teamer. Not an offensive player or any "positional" player.
And Turk- I'm not saying that he maybe doesn't deserve a little more, but I don't want to see him skipping stuff. If it comes to skipping the mandatory camp, I'll seriously be pretty down on the guy. Football is a team sport. We preach team work everyday at work, and I stress it when I interview people. When the team breaks down, things suffer. People need to put the team first. It is voluntary at this point, so he has the right to skip.
But like they say, as cliched as it is, there is no 'I' in 'team.'

If Special Teams are important, and we know they are consider this:
Cribbs, when he doesn't take it to the house, often gives us great field position with his kick & punt returns. Those can be game-changing plays. He's as good at it as anyone in football. Josh has been a class act as a Brown, and as many state, he's a fan favourite. He deserves a raise. Not silly money, but a good pay hike.

Just keep in mind that when he makes huge plays for us and gives us points or great field position, he's amazing. When he wants to be fairly compensated, he's just a special teams player.

Cribbs Stalemate Worsens josh cribbs By John Taylor
Posted May 18, 2009
One player, one owner. Two different stories. John Taylor has been in the middle of this story, and brings the latest in what appears to be a deteriorating situation between Josh Cribbs and the Cleveland Browns.
Earlier today, The Orange & Brown Report first reported that, barring an unexpected and unforeseen change of heart, Josh Cribbs would not be attending the Browns' first "voluntary" full-team minicamp, which begins tomorrow.
Cribbs, in part, is upset over the fact that the club has yet to address his current contract situation to his satisfaction. Specifically, as multiple sources have stated on numerous occasions over the past three months, Cribbs had been promised before and after the firing of the old regime by, among others, owner Randy Lerner that he "would be taken care of" contractually.
In reaction to our report, and the reports thereafter by various media entities, the Cleveland Browns released the following statement through their website this afternoon:
"Contrary to published reports this morning, no one from the current Browns organization, including Owner Randy Lerner, has ever made any promises to Josh Cribbs with regard to his contract status."
So, there you have it. In black and white. No gray area there.
Or, as a certain former Browns GM said last season, "That's the end of the story. It is over with, OK?"
Nope, not by a longshot. Unfortunately.
First of all, the statement released by the Browns is not sitting well with the Cribbs camp and could further add to tenuous nature of the situation.
The OBR has learned that, earlier this afternoon, Cribbs' agents -- J.R. Rickert and Peter Schaeffer -- sent an e-mail to new general manager George Kokinis in which the player representatives expressed their displeasure over how their client was portrayed in the statement released through the club's website.
It's believed the statement made Cribbs "look like a liar or a fabricator" as one source put it, and needs to be addressed by the organization as quickly and publicly as possible.
Secondly, we had three sources for our original story this morning. Suffice to say, as it relates to this story, you could not have three stronger sources than the ones we used to break this story.
In fact, you could say they are the only three people who really know what has gone down over the past nine months.
Now, in the wake of the Browns' denial, we have continued digging and found additional information which further confirms our original story.
A source close to ex-general manager Phil Savage confirmed earlier this afternoon that the organization, Lerner included, held multiple discussions with Cribbs and/or his agent(s) regarding his contract. The first such discussion occurred in late 2007 -- in the midst of Cribbs' Pro Bowl season -- and it was reiterated over the course of the next 12-14 months.
In each instance, the source said, Cribbs was told "there is a time and a place for everything, and this is not the time" and that nothing could be done for him contractually at the moment, but the issue would be meaningfully addressed following the season.
Obviously, Savage and head coach Romeo Crennel weren't allowed to follow through on their stance as they are no longer members of the organization. To be fair, the Savage source "has no clue" whether or not Lerner reiterated to Cribbs following their exit that he would still be taken care of.
Additionally, a source close to Cribbs confirmed yet again this afternoon that Cribbs indeed talked to the owner of the club following the dismissal of Savage.
According to the source, Cribbs received a phone call from Lerner while he was on the team bus following the Browns' season-ending loss to the Steelers in Pittsburgh.
During the course of the conversation, Lerner thanked Cribbs for "being a good soldier" during a rough season and, the source said, told him that his "situation would be addressed" even as the organization was embarking on a regime change.
In March, Cribbs was told by Kokinis that the two sides "would engage in meaningful dialogue" following the conclusion of the 2009 draft. In exchange for "meaningful dialogue", Cribbs agreed to participate in team activities that he originally planned on skipping.
That "meaningful dialogue" has yet to happen, at least to the satisfaction of Cribbs, and will result him not being a part of the minicamp tomorrow.
And, if the situation is not addressed in the not-too-distant future a source hinted, there's a very real possibility that Cribbs will request/demand a trade.
This afternoon, The OBR reached out to Lerner via e-mail, and provided the owner an opportunity to address the imbroglio personally. We provided the text of the story above to Lerner and requested a comment on the latest development.
And that he did.
In a subsequent phone conversation this evening, Lerner told The OBR that he has neither addressed Cribbs' contract with the player personally, nor has he spoken to the player over the phone regarding his contract.
Ever.
According to Lerner, no promises were made by him to Cribbs regarding his contract as that's not how the organization operates. Lerner left no doubt as to his version of how the events of the last year and a half transpired.
In response to Lerner's comments on the way the situation has developed, Rickert gave The OBR the following statement:
"We have incredible trust in our client, and we have cell phone records to back up that trust. After talking to Lerner [on the day of the season finale], [Cribbs] called [his agents], called his financial advisor, called numerous people, to let us know what he had just talked to Lerner about. We respectfully disagree with their statement and how it portrays our client. We aren't trying to throw anybody under the bus, but we stand by the credibility of our client."
So, what does all of this mean?
For the moment, it means that Cribbs will not be participating in the minicamp tomorrow.
As for the future, that's up to Cribbs, his agents and the front office to determine how all of this ultimately plays out.

I'd say a 2-year extension with a signing bonus of about $6 million. That would increase his annual salary $1 million each year for the rest of his contract, and add in whatever his base salary in 2013 and 2014 are.

Very disappointed in Cribbs.
Quote:
The biggest source of Cribbs' consternation with the state of his current contract is the fact that he was promised by owner Randy Lerner , ex-general manager Phil Savage and ex-head coach Romeo Crennel on multiple occasions last year that the Pro Bowler "would be taken care of" following the 2008 season. After the firing of both Savage and Crennel, it was reiterated to Cribbs by Lerner that he would still be taken care of as had been promised.
It's Lerner that you should be disappointed in. Whether Cribbs deserves a new contract or not becomes largely irrelevant once the team owner says "I will take care of you"
If my boss promises me a raise and doesn't honor his commitment I'd be ticked off too. I think any of us would.
I would think twice before trusting the media when they state Randy Lerner promised something to anyone. He doesn't talk to the media, and this regime doesn't talk to the media, so I have zero reason to believe that the media would have access to a conversation that supposedly took place between Cribbs and Lerner.
Setting all that aside, I can see how Cribbs would want more money. Too bad for him he's a special-teams player and that's where his value ends. He's being paid quite well for the job he does, and still has numerous years remaining on his deal. If he wanted to redo his deal so quickly, he shouldn't have taken the safe, long-term money. That's the price he paid when he settled on the deal he took.
Sorry, Josh. You're wrong.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

With the new rules on limiting the number of people in a wedge, his effectiveness on kickoffs will probably be reduced anyway... and we can get Harrison or someone else real shifty to return punts.
And IMO that is why he is pushing to get a pay raise now. He realizes that his value is going to go nowhere but down.

Secondly, we had three sources for our original story this morning. Suffice to say, as it relates to this story, you could not have three stronger sources than the ones we used to break this story.
In fact, you could say they are the only three people who really know what has gone down over the past nine months.
Way to protect your sources. The people involved could very likely determine who the sources are based on that, or at least narrow it down to very few possibilities.

Since the re-birth of the Browns, can you name one deserving player who had to live with an "unfair" contract?
The Lerner-led Browns have done nothing but take care of its players...Josh should know that...and stop listening to his agents who are trying to blow up this thing in the media.
