http://profootball.scout.com/a.z?s=127&p=9&c=2&cid=870159&nid=4277230&fhn=1The Cleveland Browns signed OT George Foster, the team announced on Friday. In addition, the club waived rookie S Jason Venson. Foster, a veteran of six NFL seasons, spent the previous two years with the Detroit Lions where he appeared in 19 contests with 12 starts. The Lions released him on Monday. Originally drafted in the first round (20th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos, Foster has started 57 of the 67 games in which he has seen action during his career. He started in all 16 games in both 2004 and 2005. Foster has played right tackle in recent seasons, but because the team is light on depth at left tackle, he may wind up being the primary backup to starter, Joe Thomas. The 6-5, 338-pound Foster was a two-year starter at the University of Georgia, where he played in 43 games with 10 starts. Born June 9, 1980, the Macon, Ga., native attended Southeast (Macon, Ga.) High School.

I remember a lot of people pimping him several years back. Now he's being bounced around..... you just never know. That's why it's so hard to accurately judge a draft hours after it was just completed.

Let's see here.
Our 3 biggest weaknesses last year, O-line depth, CB depth and linebackers. Check, check, possibly check.
I'm really loving this regime so far. As much as I hated the hire of Mangini at first I gotta say the due is doing adn saying all the right thing's imo. I'm pretty excited to see what happens on the field this year.

I love this. Granted, Foster isn't a world beater but he fits the mold of the "road grader" type, which Mangini seems to prefer, for this system.
Between Tucker, Womack, St Clair and now Foster, the right side of that line should be in good shape.
Plus some of these guys have the versatility to flip to the left side if there's an injury.

This guy isn't very good BUT......
It's a serious upgrade over John St. Clair. This is my hypothesis:
Mangini saw Tucker as a better RG than RT Mangini saw how bad St. Clair is We had no one else if we slid Tucker inside
and
Foster is the best RT available on the market.
I like the move.

Well, if Sowells wasn't out before, he is now.
This could also mean tucker's not healed.

I think Mangini just likes competition...
Look how many corners we have...
Look how many WR's we have...
Look how many LB's we have...
Only the best will play on this team... Sounds good to me..

Hes also only 29 so he can start at RT for a few years for us

Foster is a good football player and he fits perfect for the power base run offense we wish to employ. Forget about his time in Detroit. I seem to recall another guy the talking heads refered to as fat and washed up because of his time with the Lions. Look the lions had zero communication along the line. It wasnt the players but the chemistry and coaching. We are building a real offensive line. btw this is what I have been wanting for a very long time, get some real beef on the line. Will be interesting to see who we keep and who we cut now.

Well my Browns team went from 1 Georgia player to ZERO!! (Huge Mistake by the Way)... Now we have two.... To win a championship... You must have a Georgia player on the roster... Steelers.. Hines Ward Patriots.. Richard Seymour... Colts.. Tim Jennings... Giants.. Danny Ware... Tampa.. Jermaine Phillips... Cleveland Browns.... MoMass & Big George Foster

Oh man, you're lucky we all know your joking.
And besides, I'd love nothing more than to punch Hines Ward in his teeth. Knock that stupid smirk off of his face.

I agree. Foster wasn't really a fit in Detroit or Denver. The Donks run that finesse, zone blocking scheme and he's more of a road grader. May have been a "wrong place, wrong time" scenario.

Hey I'm a Buckeye fan, but I'd do the same to Santonio! Though he's a little more tolerable.

Wasn't Foster just traded to the Lions last year?
He's big and may very well work in the power running offense. For people who have seen him, is he a lot like Shaffer or can he actually run block?
you had a good run Hank.

I think he's slightly more pigmented than Shaffer, and doesn't have the beard.

Wasn't Foster involved in some sort of controversy on or off the field? I have this nagging feeling that he was but I can't find anything.

It happened shortly before the draft IIRC...many posters took it as a sign that the Lions weren't going to snag Joe Thomas.

I didn't see anything either. This was on wikipedia though:

Alot of positive talk about a guy who's been pretty much a bum for the past few years.
Nice depth, but we're not in a good place if he's starting.

Well Toad... we can dream can't we? Imagine... a former first rounder that has been critically misused for his first six years in the league... finally landing with the Browns under the tutelage of the ManGenius... suddenly comes into his own and lives up to his first round draft status by becoming a dominant Pro-Bowl Right Tackle opposite Joe Thomas for the next six years!!!!! OR he could be a backup.

Wasn't foster part of the trade to the Lions, which esstionaly gave them a tackle so they didn't draft Joe Thomas? All thought Adrian Peterson or Calvin Johnson wouldn't have been that bad either.
That was a heck of a top ten. Three to Four potiental Hall of Famers AP, Calvin, Thomas, and LaRon Landry.
Go Browns!!

Hehehe.......Sure Coldy, dreaming is what the off-season is all about
Foster is that ilk of player that we've seen come through here far-too often. All the tools.......all the ability........he passes the eye-ball test and comes with a football pedigree..........but when the ball is snapped, he turns invisible (or perhaps visible for all the wrong reasons).
He's an excellent guy to have on the bench, but if he's starting, our offensive line is not going to be much help to our QB's.

Ah yes ..... Ol' George Foster ...... Reminds me of the original Foster pimp, our very own (at the time) hermaphrodite grandmother ........ Ozzie82 from the old board. Foster's done nothing to distinguish himself thus far in his pro career ...... but maybe the lights will come on. Regardless, it appears to me to be a relatively low risk signing.

His career-path and end-results are reminiscent of LJ Shelton.
1st round pick........plays ok but not great.......doesn't improve........even slides a little........moves to another team........shows promise........play isn't all that........gets beat then benched........moves on to the next team where his promise is a beacon of hope.
LJ Shelton has been stealing money from teams for a decade now as a full-time starter.
The good news is that we aren't bringing Foster here to play left tackle, and we aren't expecting him to take a starting gig. That makes him a good signing. If someone goes down on the right side, Foster can step in for a few games. However, expecting him to go the distance as a starter isn't a risk worth taking.
A low-risk signing? Yeah, I agree, just as long as we aren't expecting him to be something he's not.

I'm a little relieved to see that after many hours of film study our brain trust has determined we may need improved ol play. I thought it was only me. Holy cow! I'll bet before you know it this sharp bunch will be viewing the pass rush tape. Oh yeah... there is no pass rush tape. Hope they figure that out.

That is what I was thinking when I posted that. LOL
Here is a little more from Scout...goes along with some comments toad made.
http://cle.scout.com/2/870164.html
The fact that the Lions failed to win a game last year, and had recently signed Foster for the minimum salary at his level of experience, yet cut him anyway, should tamp down the expectations of those who remember Foster's potential when he was at Georgia. Foster’s release coincided with the Lions signing veteran tackle Jon Jansen, a year following their selection of RT Gosder Cherilus in the first round.
Foster reportedly struggled with Mike Martz’s complex offense in 2007 after arriving in Detroit along with RB Tatum Bell in exchange for Dre Bly. The lineman said that he never became comfortable in Detroit.
Regardless, Foster does bring along with him size and experience, if not all the success that the Denver Broncos envisioned when they selected him in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft hot off of Georgia's 2002 SEC Championship behind a line that included Foster and Jon Stinchcomb.
The acquisition gives the Browns some additional depth on the refurbished right side of the Browns offensive line, where Mangini has already imported veterans John St. Clair and Floyd Womack. Long-time Browns lineman Ryan Tucker is also in the mix.

Y'all, the reason the QB decision can wait is this pickup. Some other OL may need to go. He is an "earth mover" type. I like it a bunch. I suspect the ManGenie has designs on running the ball a bit. I am liking it so far; but, hey, in June we are all undefeated. Still, the soup is on the stove; keep cooking it up.

Probably age. Jansen is what..33-34?
Foster at least brings hope he still has 5-6 years where Jansen is nearing the end of the road.
I think Mangini and Kok have seen enough to know we don't need any 1 year fixes and only need to look at parts to the puzzle that can be viewed in 5 year chunks.
Foster is a bottom of the roster fix, and maybe not a bad one at that.
Building the bottom of your roster is just as important as building the top.

It's an improvement as far as depth, let's all pray he doesn't have to start for any extended length of time, and if he does, it's not against the elite players in the league..

well maybe we didn't pick him up for tackle....could be that we want him for RG or RT
just because he isn't a good LT doesn't mean he couldn't excel at RG
could be possible that we need tuck to play RT....or we want foster for RT.....he's of the same level as all the other fa's we brought in..
gonna come down to who wants it bad enough to keep the nfl dream alive....cause some of these bums will be sent packing....

He has the ability to be plugged in to any of 2-3 positions and perform as well as any back-up can be expected to perform.
You don't usually find starting caliber NFL players walking the streets in June.
He will find his niche.
