The common thought on RCF seems to be that Parker will end up starting, and West will move to a 6th man role.
I'm not sure how I feel about that, but it does have the advantage of letting West play more PG with the 2nd team, while improving our starting D a little bit.
I feel like this really makes Gibson expendable (he's a 3PT specialist who is now the 4th best 3PT shooter on the team), I'd love to see him packaged along with Hickson for a stretch PF.
EDIT: We still haven't learned the most important details of this signing though. If it's for the full MLE, I'll be pretty upset, because Parker isn't really the splash signing you want at the MLE level. However, if this is for the BAE, then the Cavs made an amazing deal.
I assume it's actually for some part of the MLE (say $3 million per year). That should allow us to chase Channing Frye with either the BAE or the rest of the MLE, and then possibly a back up PG with the other. That would allow us to completely fill in for Gibson.

I really don't see that at all. Delonte is a much better all-around player.
They give you similar numbers on offense (almost identical really) but Delonte is a MUCH better defender. One of the better perimeter defenders in the league.
I could see if Parker gave us a huge boost on the offensive end but the players are essentially a wash scoring the basketball. If Ariza wasn't guaranteed a starting spot over Delonte, then there's no way Parker will overtake him. Just my opinion though. I suppose anything could happen.

yeah i agree, i think west is the best guard on our team, that includes williams, west just has that all-around game..parker is a bench guy, he's what you get when you squish gibson, sasha, and wally together into a player

Well, I called the Parker thing back in another Cavs thread. LOL I like the signing because he is an upgrade (and pretty significant) over Wally and/or Gibson. He is a vet, and also a guy reputed to be great in the locker room. I would hope and expect that we didn't overpay for him ..... but who knows what Ferry might have done when looking towards next season?

WOW.....Well, I would say this is Ferry's first questionable move. They just announced AV was signed for 6 years, 50 million dollars?! Seems like a bit much.

That's a little over $8 million per. Not a bargain ... but hardly terribly pricy in the world of the NBA.
Wally made what ... $13 million?
Ditto for Wallace?
What was Eric Snow making?
Varageo could wind up being the starting center in a few years ... and with talent around him could be a solid one in the Center weak NBA.

Well, I hate that argument. Why? Because it took an idiot to sign those deals as well. The deal is an average of 8.33 million per season, for a guy who has limited offensive skills, isn't a great defender (good yes, great, no) and only averaged 7 rebounds. Does that really seem like a good deal? or even a reasonable one? To put it in perspective, Mo has 4 years 35 million left on his contract. I mean, look at some of the other guys out there. Milsap, Lee....those guys are a lot more talented (and younger) and I honestly don't think there's a team out there that would pay 6 years 50 million for either of them. The only saving grace would be a team option after 2 or 3 years or possibly if the last year isn't guarunteed it would become more reasonable. I guess I'll wait and see what the terms of the deal before I get too worked up. If the cap drops to 50 million next year, even a soft cap hit of 7 million would be 14% of the cap. That's WAY too much for a role player IMO but we'll see. Maybe I'm overreacting a bit but I just don't think AV is anything special. He's one of the worst 6'11'' finishers in the NBA and he loves to shoot jump shots (even though he's a terrible shooter ).

Anderson Varejao agrees to 6-year deal with Cleveland Cavaliers, who add 6-6 free-agent guard Anthony Parker CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cavaliers have made their big moves in free agency. After making a splash by trading for Shaquille O'Neal, the Cavs have come to terms with one of their core players and are close to adding a key piece. The Cavs have agreed on a new contract with forward Anderson Varejao, agent Dan Fegan said Wednesday. In addition, a league source said the Cavs have come to terms on a deal for free agent guard Anthony Parker. He could complete the that deal within the next few days. Varejao, the team's versatile big man who became a starter last season, is set to get a six-year contract that could be worth as much as $50 million. Much as with the contracts the team signed with Delonte West and Daniel Gibson last summer, the final year of Varejao's deal is believed to be only partially guaranteed. "Andy wanted to stay in Cleveland," Fegan said. "He feels there is unfinished business -- to win an NBA championship." Varejao had interest from several teams, including the Portland Trail Blazers and Oklahoma City Thunder, and other potential sign-and-trade offers from other teams without salary-cap space. Fegan said several teams were willing to offer Varejao contracts that averaged $10 million per season. But he and the Cavs were able to construct a deal to keep Varejao over the last week, a significant step after the two sides were unable to reach a deal in 2007 that led to a holdout. The deal will also keep Varejao's cap number to a little more than $7 million in the 2010-11 season, which could still allow the Cavs to be players in free agency next summer depending on where the salary cap goes. Varejao is coming off the best season in his career when he started 42 games and averaged 8.6 points and 7.2 rebounds. His value is deeper than those numbers because he can play both power forward and center. In addition, his quickness makes him effective in pick-and-roll defense and in how the Cavs use their defensive rotations. Parker, 34, played for the Toronto Raptors for the last three seasons after starring in Europe. The 6-6 wing averaged 10.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 43 percent from the floor and 39 percent from 3-point range. He fills a major need the Cavs have for a tall wing player and was one of the team's top off-season targets at the position. They have been in talks with him since the first day of free agency. They talked to the Raptors about a sign-and-trade but when Toronto decided to sign Hedo Turkoglu, the Cavs moved on to deal with Parker directly. Parker is an athletic player who is effective at creating his own shot, which he did often in Europe when he became the Euroleague Most Valuable Player, and as a spot-up shooter. He has also been an effective defensive player guarding tall wing players, which is what the Cavs most need. Over the last three seasons he's started 226 of 235 games but may come off the bench for the Cavs behind West. He is the brother of former University of Tennessee and current Los Angeles Sparks' star Candace Parker. Summer league info: The Cavs will be starting play in the Vegas Summer League this weekend and will play six games over the 10-day event. Both draft picks from last month, first-rounder Christian Eyenga and second-rounder Danny Green, are set to play. Cavs roster players Darnell Jackson, Jawad Williams and Tarence Kinsey are also slated to be on the team. J.J. Hickson may spend time there doing some rehab but is not expected to play as he recovers from a back injury. The rest of the team's summer league roster is expected to be released soon.
Joe Thomas made Justin Timberlake change his name. He didn't want wusses to have the same initials...

OK, some more reasonable numbers leaking out now......I'll back away from the cliff. ESPN is saying 6 years, 42.5 million.....with incentives that could reach close to 50. Last year of the deal is only partially guaranteed. That would put his BYC at an average of 7 million per. That's not too bad. Still might have overpaid a bit but the non guaranteed year (and incentives) makes it a little easier to swallow. I would hope his incentive numbers are at least somewhat of a challenge to get to...i.e. if he's hitting those numbers it will be well worth it. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4315370

Either way he is worth half of that. Ridiculous deal, cant believe Ferry pulled the trigger on this.

Seriously, why all the love for AV? I just don't get it. He's a below average player, at best....
Shoulda let him walk and make a SERIOUS run at Artest and/or Ariza.

Uh, we did make a serious run at Ronny and Ariza..... As much as it pains me to tell ya Top, top notch FA's are not gonna sign with us until LB commits long term.. just the way it is unfortunatetly...
I am not gonna go on forever on this topic, but I will tell ya that now that we have Parker, the main storyline of the season is gonna be how AV fits with Shaq and how the backup 4 (Hickson, etc.) play..
I heart winning

Letting AV walk wouldn't allow us to give any more money to Artest/Ariza. Read the earlier salary cap discussions.
And the AV deal isn't horrible, 6 year $42.5 million is almost exactly an MLE deal (except with the extra non-guaranteed year added in). AV is worth that, either as a starting PF, or an excellent 3rd big man.

Exactly, we had more flexibility with AV due to the Bird rights I believe, and I think our salary amount is in the stratosphere compared to the cap which hinders alot too.

Right....
with this parker signing (using part of the MLE), we'll have the rest of the MLE + BAE left.
Unfortunately, we're not going to be able to get a starting quality stretch PF with either of those, which I think is what this team really needs. Shaq+AV starting together is a train wreck waiting to happen (I mean that literally, wait until LBJ drives and Shaq+AV+their defenders are all sitting in the paint waiting for him)
I think we should try to trade Gibson+Hickson for a "stretch" PF, who is good enough to be at least a nominal starter, and let us bring Andy off the bench. We can then use the BAE to try to sign a true PG to take Gibson's spot and the rest of the MLE to pick up a channing frye or something similar at PF.

I wonder if we try to bring Joe Smith back and start him? Him and Shaq would be a good duo ... and then we'd have last year's playoffs starters in Z and Andy coming off the bench.
I'm not thrilled about the AV contract ... not because of the money, but because of the length. Even at $7 mil a year (which I feel he's worth) ... that's $7 million we WON'T have next year to go after Bosh/Wade, etc. Hope this doesn't come back to bite us.
I love the Parker signing! Although, I'd like to know the terms of the contract ... (1-year MLE would be great) While Delonte is a good defender against speedy 2's ... he has issues against the taller guards. Parker gives us that size, so he's a good counter-option to D-West. We just addressed two of our biggest weaknesses ... Inside strength and size (Shaq) ... and bigger swingman defense (Parker).
I think because we made the first move in trades and free agency, everyone feels like we did nothing. We got Shaq and Parker, and lost pretty much nothing ... Wallace, Sasha, Wally and Joe Smith. Orlando gained Vince Carter, but lost a huge cog with Hedo ... they're also a 5-man rotation now. Boston got Rasheed Wallace, (I'll take Shaq over Rasheed any day.) and lost a few key bench guys ... I think they are down to a 7-man rotation now. The Lakers are the only ones that really improved ... swapping Ariza for Artest. If they get Lamar back, they are going to be a tough team ... but I still think we could compete with them. (We've got freaking Shaq and Lebron after all ... )

i just wonder, because we don't hear about these offers from other teams until now...
still though, it's good to have andy back, even if we overpaid by a few million.
and i love the anthony parker sign, although i'm curious to what the numbers of the deal are, he's 34...
i think he can be what michael pietrus was to orlando, guy who comes off the bench, knocks down some shots, plays a little defense. at least i hope.

I was kind of scratching my head last night because the first announcement was 6 years, 50 million but after sleeping on it (and seeing the structure of the deal), it's not so bad. When I first heard it, I thought that was his BYC as incentives weren't mentioned when it was first reported.
I'm sure his leverage was a product of our aging front court (Shaq 37, Z 34) . Andy is the only young, experienced big on the entire roster, so he kind of had Ferry in a tough spot.....especially when you consider that there wasn't another 6'11'' big in FA (with AV's skill set) that we could get. But as someone mentioned, the deal averages out to be the MLE plus 8-9% raises each year.
5.8 Million 6.24 Million 6.76 Millon 7.3 Million 7.89 Million 8.52 Million
That works out to 42.51 million. While the first year salary of his actual contract starts at higher then the MLE, his standard raises are pretty low (in comparison to the typical contract). Ferry essentially spread the money out a little more evenly, with smaller incremental raises from year to year, to make the base year compensation seem bigger then it really was.

It's impossible to sign Bosh/Wade, and it always was impossible.
I wrote a thread on RCF about it awhile ago, to sign both Bosh and Lebron to max contracts next year, you basically had to do the following this offseason:
Not resign Andy Not sign any other Player Trade Delonte west and Boobie Gibson for expiring contracts
That would leave us with about a truly terrible team this year, and wouldn't at all match with our acquisition of shaq to win now

the number you have listed are reasonable....we'll definitely be paying more this year, because his original contract was more like $6.5 million, we'll probably see the cap number stay the same or even decrease a little in 2010, with the number of free agents out there, but otherwise it basically looks like a Max MLE deal with another team option year.

cap goes down to 52 next year?
i really think that makes it impossible for anyone to sign 2 big guys. the knicks ain't gettin lebron and bosh, the cavs aren't getting bosh if they keep lebron...
i really think it gives a good chance to bosh wade and lbj staying where they are. i think bosh goes for the big payday with toronto. he's not gonna pass up that money. and remember, just like us and lbj, toronto can pay him more. and the raps have made some moves recently.

thanks for breaking the year-by-year numbers down.
I don't understand people bashing Andy...he's an extremely good defensive PF/C who is improving on the offensive end.
I would have been uncomfortable giving him more than he got....but $7mil/year is fair....especially when you consider that the guaranteed portion is around 5 years for $34million.
-------------
Anthony Parker is much better defensively than Wally and gives us a tall player who can guard SG....this was a good signing (and needed) for depth. I'm curious to what 'portion' of the MLE he got, but he should have been worth $3-4mil/year.

Finnan had a column today mentioning Gerald Wallace to the Cavs for Wally (sign-n-trade) and Hickson.
They took the page down it seems though...not sure if that means it was a bad rumor. That would be a fantastic trade for the Cavs and give them incredible depth (and I like Hickson)
GForce would have been great when we still had Z starting in order to stretch the floor.
With Shaq though, it scares the hell out of me, either Gforce comes off the bench, or we would have Shaq, AV, LBJ, and GeForce on the court at the same time, none of whom can shoot.
The trade mentioned is robbery for sure, but I would probably be more interested in chasing a number of other stretch forwards who actually fit in alongside Shaq/LBJ.

I've never really understood the infatuation with G-Force, atleast not with the Cavs. While he's a good young player, is he a good enough of a shooter to play at the 2? I would say no. He's a natural 3 and with LeBron there, it's kind of a hard sell. More athlete then anything.
Now, if we had a stretch 4 it would make some sense but we don't. Why? Because it would make us a lot more athletic and give us a 2 that could slash and do a lot of damage on the boards (while our 4 freelances on the perimeter). With the team constructed the way it is, I don't know how it helps us offensively (or defensively for that matter). He's more opportunistic defender (jumping in passing lanes etc.) then lockdown. I do trust Ferry however if he were to pull the trigger, as he has robbed some people blind in trades. Many people said the same thing about Mo's defense (he's simply a freelancer, etc.) and he was much better with us then he was with Milwaukee.
The question is, how good do we think JJ can be? If we have confidence that we'll be able to re-sign LeBron I think you hang on to JJ and let him grow alongside LBJ. He's locked up for cheap and his qualifying offer in 3-4 years will pretty much be pennies on the dollar. If we have reservations that JJ will be a starting 4 and a long term solution (so we could slide AV to the 5) then you probably package him for a guy like Wallace. You REALLY have to be sure though, as Wallace is owed 4 years at around 40 million.
I suppose you could look at it as insurance for LBJ as well. Wallace is a more than capable 3 and could slide back to the SF (if LeBron were to depart) and put up solid numbers. Having 3 young pieces in Mo (26), Wallace (26) and Andy (26) would at least be a good nucleus to build around if Bron were to bolt.

http://www.morningjournal.com/articles/2009/07/09/sports/mj1308110.txtColumn is back up (above) Anyway, Gerald Wallace is an amazing defender who can fill up a stat-sheet. He is a much better player than Marion at this point of his career. And, his main selling point is that he is one of the most versatile defenders in the league.... let's look at the only teams we care about (contenders): Orlando - Gerald Wallace can play the 4 and guard Rashard Lewis or play the 2/3 and guard Vince Carter. Lakers - Gerald Wallace plays the 2 and guards Kobe....or switches off and plays the 3 and guards Artest (letting LeBron take on Kobe) Boston - Gerald Wallace can guard Pierce allowing Delonte/Mo to guard Allen and leaving LeBron on Rondo....who he can cheat off of and wreak havoc everywhere. Spurs - Gerald Wallace can physically abuse Ginobli....guard Richard Jefferson and can even hang with McDyess when necessary. Denver - he can guard Billups or whoever the start at SG....this is the team I don't see him helping as much (though he'd be better against Billups than Delonte because of strength) because I don't trust him against Melo. Dallas - let's include them because of their moves.....he can guard pretty much their whole roster. He basically adds so much versatility to our defensive system that thrives on it. He would rarely be put in a mismatch no matter who he got switched off to. On offense, he is an aggressive slasher and another good rebounder. He is also excellent at finishing on fast breaks. True, his outside shot isn't as good as you would want from a traditional SG, but I think he more than compensates for that with his other attributes. In addition, you could give teams a multitude of looks....including an absolutely deadly smallball lineup: Mo Delonte Gerald LeBron Shaq (I put Shaq here instead of AV mostly because he would let us still have a half-court presence when the above 4 guys couldn't run and get quick buckets) and that doesn't even mention how much it upgrades our depth/bench by having a 2nd line that would then include Delonte/Parker/Z anyway, doubtful this happens, but I would be a big fan of it.

Decreased with playing time as well. Which is another concern, apologist have all kinds of reasons as why that is. I just think we need a shooter in the front court. Something JJ, AV, and Shaq definitely are not.

I saw this article and it breaks down our off season very well I thought, and really brings it into perspective. Overall its positive and makes me feel better about this off season, and puts the ferry bashers to rest for a little while anyways... Quote:
A Few Cavs Off Season Notes Submitted by Kevin_Hignett on July 9, 2009 - 1:07pm.
1. It’s amazing to me how many people who clearly don’t know what they’re talking about (I’m referring to you, Cleveland.com comment-writers) are freaking out about the Cavs off season moves and calling for Danny Ferry’s head. Here’s another example of that negative, woe-is-me Cleveland attitude I’ve railed against recently. Could we please try to remember that this team won 66 games last year and recently got one of the all-time great centers for what amounts to beads and trinkets? Seriously, it’s not like the team has to be completely revamped!
2. It was pretty much universally agreed upon that the Cavs’ two biggest off-season needs were a reliable shooting guard/swingman with size and a “stretch-forward.” They started off by grabbing Shaq which didn’t solve either of those problems, but solved another one by adding a true low-post presence on both ends of the floor. It now seems that the Cavs will sign Anthony Parker, who should be the reliable shooting guard they were looking for.
3. Parker is solid and is younger in basketball years than his actual age of 34. That’s because he played several years in Europe where they have a much shorter season. He can shoot and consistently knocks down open threes. At 6-6, he adds much needed size at the 2. He is faster and more athletic than Wally and Sasha, which should help on both ends. And that’s really how these moves should be evaluated: Did the team get better, or not?
4. Not only is Parker better than Wally and Sasha, but Tarence Kinsey might be as well and Danny Green has the potential to be an upgrade too. Let’s take a look at the whole picture and imagine the depth chart. Does it look better today than it did yesterday? I say yes.
5. Anderson Varejao has been re-signed. The details of the deal aren’t out yet, but it appears to be worth up to $50 million over 6 years. The 6 years might seem odd until you consider that with that length deal the Cavs might never have to put up with Dan Fegan again… which is nice. Fegan is quickly becoming the Scott Boras of the NBA, which is to say he’s growing horns and a tail. At 26 Andy has 4-5 more “peak” years left. So the Cavs now have a known quantity at PF locked up for his prime years and still have the option to trade him with the last year of his expiring contract and get something in return. As for the amount of the deal, we’ll likely learn that there are kickers to get up to that $50 million amount and Andy will be paid something less than that in reality.
6. Brian Windhorst is reporting that the Cavs may also pick up Channing Frye. He’s not my first choice. I’d rather have gotten McDyess for 1 or 2 years. But the deal he got from the Spurs is crazy and I’d rather not commit to him for 3 years so they’re welcome to him. Shawn Marion? No thank you. He’s not a power forward anyway. If you look at who’s left and what the Cavs want to pay, Channing Frye might be the best option. His diminishing minutes and production worry me, but that could change in a hurry with a new team and a shot at winning a title. We’ll see. Worst case scenario is that Frye becomes an insurance policy in case J.J. Hickson’s back becomes a major long-term problem. And after the bench performance in last year’s playoffs, improving that part of the roster is about the best thing the Cavs can do this off-season.
7. People need to stop having pipe-dreams about players who were never a possibility for the Cavs. I saw somebody comment that the Cavs need to get David Lee. First of all, he doesn’t fit the Cavs’ need at all. Second, he’s demanding $10+ million and the Cavs don’t have it. They just don’t! Ditto for Lamar Odom, who some people still mention as a possibility. Not only is he too expensive, but Lamar Odom will never play outside of L.A. unless a team wildly overpays for him. You want to be that team? Didn’t think so.
8. As for the guys that the Cavs “missed” on, Artest got his first choice. He said he wanted to play for the Lakers, so the Cavs only would’ve had a shot if the Lakers opted to re-sign Ariza. And Ariza seems to be a typical NBA player who only has 2 things on his mind: dollar bills and warm weather. The Cavs would have given him all the money they could have and he simply chose to go another route. Oh well. Charlie Villanueva? Dollar bills. The Cavs just couldn’t match that offer from Detroit and that’s the way it goes.
9. The biggest loss of the off-season is Assistant Coach John Kuester to Detroit. Pray to whatever God you pray to that Mike Brown doesn’t attempt to take back the offensive coaching. Especially since that offense now involves Shaq, Mike Brown simply isn’t up to the task. It’s not him and he and Danny Ferry need to either promote another coach who can do the job, or hire somebody. If you see Mike Brown in the huddle during pre-season games scribbling LeBron “iso” plays on his little board, get yourself ready for disappointment.
10. As it stands today with guys who have officially signed, the Cavs starters will be Shaq, Andy, LeBron, Delonte, and Mo. Z, D-Block, J.J., Gibson, and Green will get regular minutes off the bench with Kinsey on the fringe. If the Parker deal is finalized, he could become the starting 2-guard or a first or second guy off the bench. Frye would be added to the frontcourt depth and likely take some of J.J.’s minutes. Ask yourself if you would rather have Ben, Sasha, Wally, and Joe Smith instead. I wouldn’t. Overall I think the team is more athletic and flexible with a perhaps more potential.

there's no doubt we're a better and deeper team. if shaq comes in motivated, we're real dangerous, i think this team still goes out and wins 60-65.

Honestly.....the only guy I will miss is Joe Smith...I would love to find a way to keep him around...It won't kill us if he isn't around...but he is a great bench guy to have...
I am happy to this point with the moves thus far....We got a lot more than I was expecting really...considering that everyone is trying to save space for next year....including us...
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...
What's the use of wearing your lucky rocketship underpants if nobody wants to see them????

yup, i'm happy with this team going in, it's not perfect, but you know what? the lakers weren't a perfect team last year, and they won the whole damn thing.
i think the biggest factor now that we have added depth, and resigned andy, is shaq's health and his durability. how mike brown manages him during the year will be a very big key to our season. i'm crossing my fingers that the shaq of old comes back for a year, and plays strong. we're not gonna see the late 90's shaq, but is it too much to ask for the '05 shaq?
