Lampy, your lack of compassion towards wait staff appals me...I bet if you went to Windsor and attended the "Ballet" you'd tipp your butt off...I have worked at various wait staff jobs in my time...it's guys like you we avoid once we know what a cheap butt you are!
Well then, you're not doing your job and your ass should be shown the door, if the owner has any thoughts toward his customers. BTW, who said I had a lack of compassion?
Yeah, whenever I go to the Ballet in Windsor I tip generously.

Yeah, most of the time. What's your point?
You just seem really proud of yourself over it. So, good for you.
Jump to conclusions much?
I'm not "proud" of anything with respect to this discussion. I'm just offering my thoughts on it. My "no tip from lamp" line was just a joke. I DO tip, my point is why should I be treated second-rate if the staff sees me a s a poor tipper?
Ballpeen: I already addressed that minimum wage thing. In Canada, it's the law, there are no loopholes for bar/pub owners.

It will depend on the staff as to whether you get crappier service or not. I have a client that always tips me $1 for a half hour massage. Guess what, I dread it when she comes in. I don't give her less of a massage....just wonder why she even bothers at all.

The point is on this contnent it IS your responsibilty to pay part of the wages of your server/bartender if they are doing their job and you're dining or drinking out. I go with Peen and usually tip 20% more if they provide excellent service.
If you don't want to tip go to self serve places then you can tip yourself. As I said before I'd be suspect of what little added bonuses you are eating and drinking if you return to the same place twice. If I were you I'd keep going to new places where they don't know you're gonna stiff em.

Let's put it this way: I've known waitressess (Teena, a fitness buff and a redhead ) who make min. wage AND on a good night can make $150 in tips. So cry me a river. If the min. wage/exemptions down there means waitresses are paid $3 an hour, then that's something that should be taken up with law makers. But sure, knowing that would make me want to tip more generously.

I've already presented my case as to why I feel the way I do, and I do know what I'm talking about. Thanks for the cheap shot, by the way, I didn't expect that from you.

Oh you can think what you want(you don't even need my permission ) it doesn't change the fact that in this country (and as far as I know on this continent)you're wrong. I know there are some countries where tips are not only not expected they're seen as an insult. Here however it's rude and cheap to tip badly or not at all. It's wise to know and follow the tipping customs of the country you're in. You still didn't tell me what the cheap shot was.

Good for her.. is that before or after she tips everybody else? I used to wait tables and it wasn't uncommon for me to have $150 at the end of the night in addition to my $2.30 "salary"... then I'd take the $150 and tip out the bartender $30 for making my drinks, the busboy $20 for clearing my tables... that leaves me with $100.... my "salary" did little more than cover my taxes so I essentially got ZERO on my paycheck... so at the end of a 9 hour shift of catering to your every need.. I made a bit over $10 an hour... not bad but then there were nights when I'd have $30 in tips.... then what?

There is nothing selfish about that. A "tip" or "gratuity" is just what it says.....EXTRA pay for EXTRAORDINARY service. Just because I'm a nice guy, I leave 15% for average service, 20-25% for great service.
I have refused to tip really poor service several times. One example: The waitress was awful... did not take our order or refill our drinks for 40 minutes (not a busy night), snotty attitude, completely botched the order, overcharged for what we did get, didn't refill our drinks or make another stop at the table the rest of the night. We went to the bar and brought back a round of drinks. I went to the back and grabbed the coffee pot to refill those.
When she did return to bring the bill, I asked her if she wanted a tip, then told her not to stand under a tree while there's lightning.
The manager approached us while we were getting our coats on and had the gall to tell me that the wait staff is dependent on gratuities for their income. I explained our situation, he gave us a nice gift certificate in return, and then acted like I should still tip this waitress. I refused. I am NOT going to feel guilty or responsible because I didn't give EXTRA money for crappy service.

Exactly. That $100 from the good night could pretty much be what you get for the week.

Wrong about what exactly? The minimum wage thing? I'd be happy to PM you a couple of phone #s for pubs /bars in my area, you can ask 'em yourself if that's what you're doubting. They make a pretty good living here... $7.25 or so an hour plus AVERAGING about $75-$90 on tips (just guessing, but that's not much of an exaggeration, if at all)... This ain't New York City, the cost of living isn't all that high.

That'd be this one, right here:
"You just have no clue why don't you just stop? Or is it because you're getting attention?"
Disregarding the "you have no clue" line... I present my opinion and it's only because I need attention??? If I needed attention so badly I sure wouldn't turn to these boards to get some... lol...

Yeah that would suck. As far as I know, the bartenders serve drinks too and whatever they get from tips is their's. I'm sure in pubs, the kitchen staff gets a share of the tips, true enough. But waiters are not getting paid $2.50 an hour up here because of exemptions....
$7.25 an hour or whatever the hell it is, isn't great, but add on tax-free income from tips, and they can make a pretty decent living.

Geez I thought we had a running joke about you getting attention. Didn't think that was a cheap shot.
Just because you called some places and goy some info on wages doesn't change the customs and what really happens to the cash (see DC's post). So I still maintain that though you think you have a clue you are in fact ignorant of what it is really like for most wait staff. That's not a cheap shot just the fact that you lack knowledge.

Why be upset they make a decent living?? Bottom line is if cheap is your way, then cheap it is. And I am not saying that is bad....I know lot's of people like that. After a while those people know who is a good customer and who isn't. For me, I prefer the staff to like seeing me come through the door.....know what I drink and have it there when I sit down. I like to get pushed to the top of the wait list when I don't have reservations on a busy night . I like getting a table with a good view rather than a table crammed into the corner. I like the manager talking to me and the chef leaving the kitchen for a moment to greet me at some point during the stay. And with that comes taking care of the staff when I leave. Just the way it works.

I'm not upset they make a decent living, that was never my point. And I'm not a poor tipper either: for food, about 15-20 per cent, sometimes higher... If order a beer, if it's $3.50, I'll give em $4 and tell 'em keep the change, sometimes $5 and they keep the change. 50 cents, or $1.50 a beer... they add up the way I knock 'em down. I don't mind tipping, I'm just not gonna put their kids through college.

Might want to check that out...I know certain businesses are exempt from the new minimum wage law in Ohio.
I'm one of them... I make 2.90 an hour... I'm a commission sales rep so obvously I make a lot more then that.

GETTING BACK ON TOPIC... LOL!!!!!
I have a ton of friends who are lesbians bi gay.... whatever you want to call them. I don't know if anyone really realizes how many people are not straight in the greater cleavend area. Thre are several bars/clubs/restraunts that are gay so on and so forth. They have their own softball league. You would also be surprised at how many businesses are run by gays. I have met several people along the way and said... wow you are gay??? Wow you own that?!?!?!? They have literally kept millions and millions of dollars flowing in this community... I'ts not just in lakewood as many people think. To name a few off the top of my head.. Italians have the feast, Blacks have their month, Irish have St Patrick's day... What's the problem? If the city wants to throw a party for them... obviously it will be profitable to the community.
I don't know what the big deal is about being gay anyways... it's about as stupid as a person being not equal to another person because of a different skin color or a woman not being as good of an employee as a man in the workplace... It's just ignorance. Regardless of the marriage law... Gays are still marrying each other. It's just not legal. but, if you look at it... the only thing getting married legally helps with is the governmental purposes and health insurance. To anyone else... it doesn't matter. If two people love each other... why should it matter what color or sexuality they are? It should just matter that they are happy together... Besides look at all the straight marriages that fall apart every single day...
Hunter + Dart = This is the way.
