If they cannot separate and one or the other take charge, let Ratliff start and trade them both and draft a QB next year in the draft and be done with all this crap.
So we do as you suggest, Ratliff has a good year while the rookie sits to learn and we are right back where we started except instead of DA and BQ we have Ratliff and McCoy (or Tebow or Bradford,,,,)
Am I perfect? No Am I trying to be a better person? Also no

We do have a legit QB. Probably 2 of them. DA already proved he was in 2007. Did he have problems in 08? Yeah. But so did the entire offense (Jamal not the same, Braylon's drops, injuries). But he's proven he CAN be a pro bowl QB.
If Tom Brady didnt drop out of the Pro Bowl after he lost the Super Bowl, we wouldnt be saying DA was a Pro Bowl QB.
I think you just said Tom Brady, Derek Anderson, SuperBowl and Pro Bowl all in the same sentence. If Tom Brady...the winner of how many SuperBowls and arguably the best QB in the league didn't drop out....DA wouldn't have been a Pro-Bowler. Sounds like a Compliment to me.

Monday, Aug. 17: No starter named Posted August 17th, 2009 by Marla Ridenour Coach Eric Mangini said it was too early to name a starting quarterback, even though Brady Quinn put the Browns in position for 10 points in a 17-0 preseason-opening loss to Green Bay Saturday night. Asked if there was any separation between Quinn and Anderson, Mangini said, "I'm looking at it as a body of work and not really a horse race where you're kind of listing it at each point in the race. "I'm going to go through the complete process and let it play out. I was encouraged by some things we did offensively. But until we take care of the other problems, I temper it when I say encouraged. We didn't score points or protect the ball first and foremost." Mangini still refused to name Anderson as the starter for Saturday night's home preseason game against the Detroit Lions. He had said recently that whoever started Game 1 against Green Bay would be the second quarterback in in Game 2. "That wasn't set in stone," Mangini said. "I'm going to see how it goes. I would like to balance the reps as much as possible." Quinn played 17 snaps against the Packers to Anderson's five. Quinn, the starter, orchestrated a 10-play drive that ended when Hank Fraley was called for holding on Phil Dawson's 31-yard field goal. Dawson missed the next attempt from 41 yards. On Quinn's second series, Braylon Edwards dropped a touchdown pass and Quinn's next pass was intercepted. Anderson was 0 for 2 with an interception, the pick coming when he was hit in the knee as he threw. QB update: The first practice after an error-plagued game was just as sloppy. An Anderson pass went off Mike Furrey's hands and was picked off by linebacker Eric Barton. Lance Leggett dropped a Quinn throw, then his next pass to Jordan Norwood was intercepted by linebacker Marcus Benard. The session ended with Anderson and Quinn directing two-minute drills and neither fared well. A penalty was called on the first play, with Joe Thomas running a lap for the flag, then Anderson found Mike Furrey and Steve Heiden. But the drive stalled when Anderson scrambled on what would have been a sack. On Quinn's chance, he hit Brian Robiskie over the middle, then a pass to Mohamed Massaquoi fell incomplete as Kaluka Maiava blitzed from the edge and came unblocked. Defensive back Bret Lockett broke up a pass to Leggett that Nick Sorensen nearly intercepted. Quinn threw out of bounds on the final play, a fourth and 12. Who's not practicing: Nose tackle Shaun Rogers, running back Jerome Harrison, tight end Martin Rucker and linebacker David Bowens. Offensive lineman Ryan Tucker left the field during practice and returned with a team doctor, then joined the injured players on the bikes. Who's gone: Linebacker Bo Ruud. Who's visiting: Stow's Ben Curtis, fresh off a tie for 24th in Sunday's PGA Championship, watched the entire practice and spent time with Anderson afterward. More laps: Along with the normal practice infractions that drew laps, the session ended with players who committed penalties in Saturday's game running. link

RB Harrison rides; RB Jennings arrives
Aug 18th, 2009 @ 10:06 am by Steve Doerschuk
Maybe it’s because Jerome Harrison has spent a lot of ttime on the exercise (quickie rehab) bike, including this morning, but for whatever eason … Newly signed RB Chris Jennings is out there on the practice field, having signed today, wearing No. 34. There’s a pretty strong cast of guys not practicing and in uniform at the rehab. It includes Ryan Tucker, Shaun Rogers and David Bowens. About 30 minutes into this morning’s practice, coordinator Brian Daboll noticed that wideout Paul Hubbard was limping. “Go see the trainer,” Daboll said, and moments later Hubbard was on an exercise bike. - Jennings grew up in Kentucky, played college ball at Arizona and spent part of 2008 in the CFL with Montreal. Hubbard has great size and athleticism, but we noticed yesterday that he wasn’t moving well. Athleticism doesn’t mean much when the wheels are wobbly. - D.A. is running the ones this morning, but we noticed plenty of front-line receivers are taking the field when B.Q. was on the field.
You don’t see a lot of running backs with Jennings’ college stats in the NFL. As an Arizona senior in 2007, he rushed 53 times for 156 yards and caught 27 passes for 232 yards. As a junior, he rushed 105 times for 451 yards. Not quite in Harrison’s league - Harrison rushed for 1,900 yards in his final year in the same conference Jennings played in.
- My son and I were playing roster trivia last night to make sure I knew everybody’s number. Rob said, “Who is No. 53.” I shot back. “Dunno. Gimme a clue.” Rob said, “He played college ball at Houston.” I still couldn’t come up with the name. I learned linebacker Phillip Hunt’s number the night before he was cut to make way for the new running back. Roster trivia resumes tonight.
A fur security blanket, or something like that
Aug 18th, 2009 @ 10:34 am by Steve Doerschuk
Watching this morning’s practice reminds us … Brady Quinn really leans on Mike Furrey when they are in 11 on 11s together. There’s a connection there, including on some psychological level - both grew up in mid-Ohio, playing high school ball in the same conference. They’ve known each other for several years and worked out together before Furrey was ever a Brown. - Near the end of practice, vgeteran corner Corey Ivy, pressing to stay in the league, was flagged for interference on a deep D.A.-to-Edwards sideline pass. The flag hadn’t yet landed when Ivy called out, “Goodness gravy,” or some such thing. Edwards made a subtle first down sign as Ivy took off on a punishment lap. He sprinted.

Getting testy: Displeased Eric Mangini calls out the Cleveland Browns after ragged practice by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter Tuesday August 18, 2009, 3:59 PM BEREA, Ohio -- Is it the dog days of training camp or the strains of a marriage between new coaches and players starting to show with the Browns? Maybe both. Coach Eric Mangini railed against his team's continual mistakes after Tuesday's morning practice. Prior to Mangini's tirade, at least one player, Braylon Edwards, hinted that the team could use some positive reinforcement. Here's what happened: Near the end of the practice, Mangini set up a situation drill with 50 seconds and two timeouts left in a tie game. The object was to move the offense into position to kick a field goal or score a touchdown. Brady Quinn led the first team and promptly tossed a weak pass over the middle for Edwards, who wasn't looking, and Brandon McDonald made an easy interception. In came Derek Anderson and the second unit. There was an 8-yard completion to Brian Robiskie, followed by a false start, a delay of game penalty, a wasted timeout, a throwaway, a handoff to Noah Herron and a punt. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/I heard today was one of the worst practices in a loooong time

lol, I'm glad he's POed. I clipped another part of that same article. Quote:
Asked how a team could commit a delay of game penalty after a false start, Mangini responded, "That's a great question. I asked the same thing. It shouldn't happen."
The Browns had their 18th and 19th practices of training camp on Tuesday. They were the sixth of seven two-a-days scheduled before camp formally breaks next week. It has been a physical camp compared to the ones conducted the past four seasons by Romeo Crennel. But there are worse out there. Bill Belichick put his Patriots through eight two-a-days in a row to start his camp this summer. "Everybody's been working hard ... everybody's tired, everybody's experiencing the same thing," Mangini said. "The important thing is how you deal with that experience and whether or not you can function and effectively get better in practice."
Mangini was asked if he felt it was time to give his players some relief, comic or otherwise, to reward them for working so hard.
"They can watch practice and get some comic relief," he replied tersely. "They can yuk it up over that. I mean, we practiced without pads. That's relief. What do you do with it?" /quote]

On Training Camp Daily on STO last night they said Joe Thomas won some award or something that he was allowed to cash in for one practice off, which is why he didn't practice. Hope I'm allowed to post that...don't want anything to mistake his not practicing for a sign of an injury.

I'm sure that's fine. I never once thought he was hurt. Figured if he was, that's what the report would have said. It's all good . . .

Yeah, I read that in a number of places (that Thomas "won" the day off). Hey, if that gets guys to participate in offseason stuff and work hard, then so be it.

Edwards was just pointing out that Ivy gave up a first down on a penalty. He would have been better off just letting him drop the ball.
I like Edwards and wish he'd get his head fixed. He's a monster receiver, when he hangs on to the ball.

He won the card for his off season training. He was allowed to cash it in for a practice off when he wanted. Camp is tough. But it should be, I think. They will survive.
Hank was playing guard because Steiny bumped out to tackle for Joe, who had the morning off. Hank was back at center with the 1's in the afternoon practice.

Here's the full article ... http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2009/08/video_tony_grossi_and_mary_kay_13.htmlBEREA, Ohio -- Is it the dog days of training camp or the strains of a marriage between new coaches and players starting to show with the Browns? There was an 8-yard completion to Brian Robiskie, followed by a false start, a delay of game penalty, a wasted timeout, a throwaway, a handoff to Noah Herron and a punt. There were other mistakes earlier. Afterwards, Mangini fumed, much as he did after Saturday night's exhibition clunker in Green Bay, Wis. "That's just bad football," the coach said. "And it's under our control if you look at the scoreboard and understand what we have to do. That's it. We have to put the plays in the context of the game. "Know the situation, anticipate what's going to happen, be able to react to that, understand the person you're playing against, what his traits are. Anything short of that, you're just running plays Asked how a team could commit a delay of game penalty after a false start, Mangini responded, "That's a great question. I asked the same thing. It shouldn't happen." The Browns had their 18th and 19th practices of training camp on Tuesday. They were the sixth of seven two-a-days scheduled before camp formally breaks next week. It has been a physical camp compared to the ones conducted the past four seasons by Romeo Crennel. But there are worse out there. "They can watch practice and get some comic relief," he replied tersely. "They can yuk it up over that. I mean, we practiced without pads. That's relief. What do you do with it?" He said he didn't need to make changes on the depth chart to send the message that he won't tolerate repeated mistakes. "I think they understand that," he said. "We have a plan in terms of what we want to get accomplished and it's all based on a bigger plan. "The important thing to me is getting the lesson across. Jim Brown talked about a second wind ... for when you're tired, when you feel like you want to take a nap, that's when you have to push through that and that's when you break through the barrier and catch what he called the second wind. I'm looking for us to push through any sort of adversity and continue functioning effectively." There's no doubt that tails are dragging after the mistake-filled 17-0 loss to the Packers. The horrendous outing did not accurately portray, nor reward, the work the players feel they have put into this camp. Linebacker D'Qwell Jackson termed the performance "shocking." Running back Jamal Lewis said, "That wasn't a performance. That was a lot of mistakes." Defensive end Corey Williams said, "We can't have another game like that or it's gonna be a long season. The preseason can determine what your regular season can be like." Edwards said it's important for the Browns to play better against Detroit Saturday to put the players -- and coaches -- in a better frame of mind. "To see the team move in the right direction, to see coaches believing in that and praising that, I think that would ignite myself as well as the rest of this team to continue to get a steamroll going and win some games and move forward towards a playoff atmosphere," Edwards said.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Edwards had beat ivy on a play just before that went for a touchdown bomb down the sideline from Quinn. Edwards went to other side and Quinn would have torched him again on a bomb down the sideline but IVy held him. IVY starts complaining and BE poiints. If it had been anyone besides Edwards pointing everyone would have said woo hoo but since its BE

Watching Mangini's press conference from the 18th. He said the guys need to battle through the difficult situations. He said that it's hard to keep your focus when you're tired.
But he said they should look to the different community groups who visit. These are people who are struggling with the basics of life. So, what these players have to do, just go out and play football, isn't all that hard in context.

Plus, as games go on, you get more and more tired. And the guy you're going against is tired, too. So, the key is, who is mentally stronger to battle through it?

J/C... Here are a few updates from camp today http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/rapid-reports/team/CLEWednesday, August 19, 2009 3:14:34 pm Browns RB Jamal Lewis has been adept at catching the ball out of the backfield throughout camp. The team would like to get him the ball in the open field. 2:58:38 pm Browns QB Derek Anderson answered rival Brady Quinn's pinpoint pass to Braylon Edwards by firing a perfect long one to WR Lance Leggett. The plot thickens. 2:56:02 pm The cheer of the day was just raised when Browns QB Brady Quinn dropped a perfect long strike just over DB Corey Ivy and into the hands of WR Braylon Edwards. 2:48:07 pm First-round pick Alex Mack has been making fewer mistakes as training camp has progressed. If he and fellow C Hank Fraley play to a draw, look for Mack to start, a scenario the Browns would prefer. 2:24:54 pm Browns coach Eric Mangini stressed today that RB Jerome Harrison's continued absence gives rookie James Davis an opportunity to show he's worthy of playing time. 2:23:47 pm Opening Browns practice on the stationery bike are NT Shaun Rogers, WR Paul Hubbard, RB Jerome Harrison and LB David Bowens. 2:20:24 pm TE Robert Royal has been added to the list of sidelined Browns. He and WR David Patten are working with a trainer. 1:59:17 pm When it was suggested that Browns coach Eric Mangini should name a starting quarterback because that player is the face of the team, he replied, "the face of the team should be the team." 1:58:28 pm Robert Royal appears to be far ahead of the competition in the battle for the Browns starting TE spot. "What I like about Royal is that he does a nice job of route running, he's a good run blocker and he can work in the backfield some in pass protection," said coach Eric Mangini. 1:56:52 pm Browns coach Eric Mangini stressed that preparing both Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn as potential starters has its benefits. He said that one is that the backup is always one play and one injury away from being the starter. 1:55:01 pm Browns QBs and WRs didn't seem to be on the same page yesterday morning. The result was incompletions and INTs. When asked about disappointment, Browns coach Eric Mangini said, "(Defensive coordinator) Rob Ryan might see it differently." 1:52:46 pm Browns coach Eric Mangini is holding off announcing a starting quarterback for the Lions game until the end of the week. He wants to see both in situations such as third downs, red zone and two-minute drills before naming a full-time starter. 1:51:05 pm The Browns will work specifically today on preparing for Detroit, their opponent Saturday night in the first of two home preseason games. 1:50:25 pm When asked if he considered it ironic that the Browns will be playing Brett Favre and the Minneota Vikings in the regular season opener, coach Eric Mangini had a quick quip. "It will make for good TV," he said. 1:46:50 pm Last year, Eric Mangini coached Brett Favre. This year he will coach against Favre in the Browns regular season opener. "Brett is a great guy, fierce competitor and a fun guy to coach," Mangini said. "I'm a better coach for having coached him." 1:45:20 pm Browns coach Eric Mangini was pleased at how his team bounced back from a poor morning practice with a better session last night. "I talked with the guys about the need to play good football and smart football," he said. "I think they did a much better job." 1:43:58 pm The Cleveland Browns Foundation has launched a campaign to provide children with new shoes, clothing and school supplies. Anyone interested in contributing or donating money to the cause should call 216-881-7463 or visit www.sc4k.org.

I thought he was going to alternate the starting job for the first 2 preseason games. Maybe not...

Can you tell me one championship caliber team that didnt have a clear and definitive starter at QB. Every other position I agree, not at QB. This is just another year of the coaches sitting on the fence about our QB cause they dont feel that either guy is the guy. Im tired of it, pick one. And lets run with him.

The comment has nothing to do with it. We need to pick a QB, but not to have a face of the team.

2008/2009 Arizona Cardinals....2 minutes from champions at least.
Leinart started preseason game #3 that many thought meant he might win that job.

Well, see I disagree. The QB is the face of the team imo. Especially on a team like ours where there is no real standout unit or player.

That was a lil different than our situation though. Warner ran with the job once he had it. Our situation is going to be much more difficult to handle gracefully once the season starts. Unless a miracle happens. I just want one guy getting all the reps right now. Warner could do without so many reps in camp,, Quinn and Anderson need all the reps they can get. Splittin them equally is just insuring that neither is as prepared as he should be. And that the receiver are still trying to get used to two different passers. Instead of being in synch with one.

i agree that i'd rather pick our guy and get him the reps...we also don't have Fitz and Boldin, which obviously help. but, you just asked for an example, and one was available that seemed rather current

What Mangini just said: "The team is the face of the team."
