Rookie 6th Rounder Don Carey Waived by Browns

Don Carey's tenure with the Cleveland Browns didn't last long, as he was waived/injured by the team. The injury he suffered a few days ago must have sealed his fate, although I guess there's always a long shot they could bring him back. Taking his place is undrafted free agent CB Brandon Anderson of the University of Akron.

Doesnt make sense at all. Put him on the PUP and take a look at him when he is healthy. Must have done something to ... the team off. There's a missing piece here for sure.

I'm sorry to him, sorry of his injury (unknown) hope he's soon back to health.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Sounds to me like he had a pre-existing injury that he didn't disclose to the team.

Too bad for Don. While I most likely won't remember his name 3 weeks from now, I hope that he is offered the opportunity to succeed elsewhere. Seemed like a decent prospect coming out of the draft. Clearly, Magini didn't see him as a fit for future plans. Better to cut him early and allow the guy to sign elsewhere than to cut him at the end and limit his opportunities.
On a side note, it is nice to see that Mangini isn't afraid/hesitant to release a player that was just drafted by Kokinis. In other words, the two must have an excellent working relationship and trust in eachother.

You guys can laugh all you want but this doesnt sit well with me. Why take the chance on drafting the kid then? Something is amiss here, ie doesnt add up. Either speaks volumes for our scouting department and their incompetency, or lack of judgment in releasing him. Dont just cut a top 6th rd pick in my eyes...

A 6th that sticks is a commodity...not an expectation.
Maybe his injury is rough...maybe we think we can catch him after waivers, and are just looking at other bodies.

This is good.
The team saw that he wasn't good enough. Why wait till the end of camp to cut him? Bring someone else in and give them a shot. If that person isn't good enough then cut them. Roster evaluation should never stop.

Carey suffered a shoulder injury in the second practice of training camp Saturday and has not practiced since. On Thursday, the Browns waived him injured. If no team claims him, he reverts to the Browns and will be put on injured reserve. The Browns dedicated part of the offseason to strengthening the secondary. Carey, 5-11, 192 from Norfolk State, was part of that process. The Browns picked him 177th overall, 14 spots ahead of cornerback Coye Francies from San Jose State. Carey would have had the chance to compete for a backup spot among the defensive backs. At the very least he would have had a role on coverage units on special teams. Carey played cornerback and safety in four seasons in college. He played in 12 games as a senior and intercepted five passes. He broke up six others, recovered two fumbles and blocked a kick. Ohhh...my god the Browns are stupied drafting him than waving him one week into training camp...wait it was a master plan to ruin his football carrer becuase he didnt play of Ohio state......Note alot of Sarcasium in that please...common folks The Browns are simpley doing thier due dilagence, they can either keep this guy on thier active roster Injured all year taking the place of a healthy player we might need to Win football games or waive him as the process goes and give him a chance at another team this year, if they dont which I think we hope they dont than bring him back and put him on Injured reserve give him a eyar to heal and hope for a better start next year.
The time to respond & the time to listen usually dont happen on the same day.

Did you expect anyone to claim a lineman with a blown patellar tendon? It wasn't even a concern.
We'll most likely get another look at Carey next year and if he doesn't stick his career is over. Sixth rounders are a gamble.

The reason I ask is this .....
The Bengals put their TE on IR on the 5th ....... Thus, it would appear that a player can be put on IR in training camp.

Would be nice. But there's not a team around that I can think of that a 3rd rounder doesn't make the team. Hell, even 4th rounders are pretty much solid.

Not accusing you of being wrong here.
This doesn't make sense to me. He was a draft pick that signed a 2/3 year deal with us. Just because he gets hurt for the year, other teams have a chance to pick him up? Would this mean that if Mack tore up his knee, he would have to clear waivers in order to be put on the IR and not take up an active roster spot? I could see this if he was an UDFA, but not a pick.

You don't.
The odds are nobody is going to pick up a injured 6th rounder who can't practice for a while. You aren't just going to stick him on the team or some other list.
This way the Browns cleanse themselves of a player and his contract who they feel isn't going to play for a while and can sign him back at a lesser FA contract.
Let's say someone signs him....are you really going to lose sleep over the matter??

I think that he reverts to his former contract as well if no one claims him.

I suppose the injury changes things...not sure.
At any rate, I am sure there is a logical reason why the Browns would take this course.
May have been a way to clear the roster spot for the new guy we brought in??

I don't see why anybody would have a problem with this. Mangini stated that he would not be able to practice until next years minicamp. They paid him an injury settlement and waived him. IMO that was a smart move. Keeping him just takes up a roster spot. Nobody's going to claim him if he is hurt that bad, so the Browns will have a shot at getting him back next year. This will provide us with a player familiar to the system to provide some depth in camp next year. Win-win if you ask me. Smart business decision at the least.

Looks like not...word I received is Jacksonville claimed him.
I think the process is injured rooks have to first clear waivers as a way to keep teams from stashing healthy rooks on the injury list rather that keep them on a practice squad.
