Panthers.com---CHARLOTTE -- The Carolina Panthers have traded an undisclosed draft choice to the Cleveland Browns for defensive tackle Louis Leonard, the club announced Tuesday.
Leonard, 6-foot-4 and 325 pounds, appeared in 20 games with four starts over two seasons with Cleveland in 2007 and 2008, posting 33 tackles. He was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by San Diego in 2007 and spent two weeks on the Chargers' practice squad before being signed by the St. Louis Rams to the active roster Sept. 12, 2007. Leonard was waived by St. Louis on Oct. 6, 2007 and was signed by Cleveland as a free agent on Oct. 8.
A native of Los Angeles, Calif., Leonard, 25, played in 43 games at Fresno State with 28 starts, registering 68 tackles and 6.5 sacks. He was a teammate of current Panthers cornerback Richard Marshall at Fresno State.

My guess is that it is a sliding pick depending on what he does for them...but possibly a cut-casualty who we got anything for is a good thing.

I like it. Very curious to know what it is but something tellls me this HAS to be a 7th rounder in return. I mean the guy was hardly a major contributor. To get an added draft pick is a real plus for saying goodbye to Leonard if you ask me...

Interesting. I'm not expecting anything more than a 7th rounder, which I am fine with considering I don't think Leonard would have survived the final cut anyway.

So lets take that 7th rounder and give it to someone for a backup right guard.

I agree. Anything we got for this guy is gravy. Probably would have been cut anyway.

while I'm glad we got something for Leonard, I was hoping we'd get our 2nd back for Williams. Carolina was our best shot.

emergence of Rubin combined with additions of Mosley and coleman and a healthy Robaire kinda makes Corey Williams expendable. Someone offers a 3rd i bet we would be all over it lol.

http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/09/01/browns-trade-dt-louis-to-panthers/Five days after a run-in with an assistant coach, defensive tackle Leonard Louis was traded to the Carolina Panthers for an undisclosed draft pick, Browns coach Eric Mangini revealed at his Tuesday morning press conference. Last week, Louis and defensive line coach Bryan Cox got into a heated argument during team drills, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “Don’t you curse at me,” the newspaper quoted the fiery Cox as shouting. Cox then ordered Louis to run laps. Louis, according to the paper, started walking slowly without his helmet on. Cox responded: “I said run, don’t walk!” Louis was the second defensive lineman the Browns have parted ways with in less than a month. In early August, Shaun Smith was released, one day after getting into an argument with Cox. Smith had started 19 games with the Browns over two years. Louis, an undrafted free agent out of Fresno State in 2007, played in all 16 games for Cleveland last season, starting four. What in the hell is going on between Cox and our D'lineman? Is big Shawn Rogers next???

Seems to me that Cox rubs some of these guys the wrong way (man, that doesn't sound good). I don't know a lot about Leonard, but I wasn't too upset to see someone like Smith go. Maybe Leonard was cut from the same mold (not wanting to put in the work). But, I could be wrong.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

He is their coach. They should do what he says. If they don't, get out.

Hopefully it is that simple. However, I played for a few coaches that constantly belittled you and it makes it real tough to play for a'holes like that.
I'm hoping Leonard and Smith were just two lazy bums which made it easy to cut/trade....

I just hope that Rogers is out because of an injury, and he isn't on the block because of some run in he had.

Good deal for both...Leonard was the 7th DL at best here and I think he's a better fit at 43 NT anyway
probably a similar deal we did for CB Daniels last year at that time...7th rounder if he makes the team, nothing if he gets cut

It's a winner all the way around. We got value out of a guy about to be cut. When was the last time we got that in Cleveland?

I could be off a bit but if Cox sees his players dogging it and corrects them and it continually leads to a problem, he probably doesn't want to deal with them...I don't even recall LL being on the field at any time..

i would guess that it's going to be a conditional 6th/7th. Anything better than that and Kokinis should be arrested for robbery.

It's more likely that Leonard goes to Carolina, plays beside Peppers, has a bunch of tackles and by December people are talking about how Kokinis is an idiot and we got screwed.

I'm getting tired of people giving up on Williams after he had an above average season in his first year in the 3-4.
Sweet on getting something for Leonard. I wouldn't give up the last pick of the draft for him.

A lot of people on here are very extreme when it comes to giving glory too quickly and labeling people busts too early...

Smith & Leonard? Pfh. So what? I'll take guys like Rogers, Williams & Robaire any day. I know you will too, BFS19.

Tim Couch Gerrard Warren Jeff Faine William Green Courtney Brown Donte Stallworth Jeff Garcia LeCharles Bentley Ted Washington Gary Baxter Joe Andruzzi Cosey Coleman
That's just off the top of my head.
Can you blame us for being so quick to tag someone as a bust?

Still there have been guys who've seemed awful for us go on to great careers elsewhere. And we do have tendnecy to glorrify the back up in a way they just don't in other cities. Yes we're as a group way to cynical and romantic, a truly terrible combination!!! It would serve us well to, you know, not be so much so.

Jeff Faine was a pro bowler when he left here. Bentley blew out his knee don't see how that was a bust. Ted Washington had a great career before coming here he wasn't a bust. Baxter tore up both knees and he was good before injury he wasn't a bust.

Tim Couch - Will never know if he could have been a decent NFL QB in the right situation... Gerrard Warren - Bust Jeff Faine - Went to the Saints and did really well. Started every game last year with the Bucs. William Green - Bust Courtney Brown - Injury plagued career. Donte Stallworth - Bust because he's never on the field. Jeff Garcia - Has had 3 seasons with a QB rating under 80.. his first season and then his season here and his season with the Lions.. you do the math. LeCharles Bentley - ? Ted Washington - Just too old and playing in the middle of a lousy defense. Gary Baxter - Tore up both knees. Joe Andruzzi - Dude started on 3 super bowl winning teams, came here and was diagnosed with cancer a year or so later. Cosey Coleman - Retired because he couldn't pass a physical because his knees were torn up.
You have a warped opinion of what makes a player a bust.
But you forgot to name all of the other players that people on here (SOME PEOPLE) have labeled busts.. Robo, yet to play a single regular season game.. DQ, our leading tackler and arguably most dependable defensive player.. Fraley when he came here was considered another teams cast off.. Jamal who people have been saying is washed up for 3 years now but still seems to produce.. Alex Hall was a wasted pick to many.. People try to get rid of Dawson every year... and the list goes on...
Sorry, it just seems that to a bunch of people on here you are either a superstar or a bust, there is no in between to be just a solid football player.

j/c.. 1) Leave William Green alone... He has nothing to do with this.. 2) Leonard was gonna get cut anyway... So getting something for essentially nothing is always a plus...

I feel like my opinion on what makes a player a bust is very accurate...
I don't care what players did anywhere else. I only care about what they did here. And when you spend a bunch of money on a free agent or draft pick, and it doesn't work out... For whatever reason... That's a bust.
Sure, guys like Andruzzi, Bentley, and Garcia have had good to great NFL careers. But as far as the Cleveland Browns were concerned, they were not good here, for whatever reason.
Yeah, some guys might have been good if it weren't for injuries. Maybe those guys weren't busts for their careers. But, they were a bust to the Cleveland Browns.

they would be considered busts due to lofty expectations. at the time, they were still talent upgrades.

I guess we just define the word "bust" differently then... to me a bust is a guy who just can't play.. he gets on the field, he just isn't any good.
Most of the guys you listed either didn't get on the field much due to injury or proved they could play somewhere else, but for some reason, like poor coaching and poor supporting talent, couldn't play HERE.
