You weren't a fan of his in NY? He coached against the steelers once while in NY and beat them. He also beat New England twice while in NY.
I'd say you're a little worried and are trying to cover it up.
Also, ask whomever made that trendy little sig image for you if they can make me one depicting the greatest coach in NFL History (Paul Brown), and the greatest player in NFL History (Jim Brown) surrounding the Browns 8 titles.

Hack knows his football. RAC is a good coach, but isn't the right guy for a young team like the Browns were/are.
As far as Mangini goes, he does have some ???s to answer. He has a reputation of players hating him/ not wanting to play for him. He is abrasive to the fans, and the media. Granted pissing off the media and fans isn't a big deal as long as you win. However, just like BB's tenure in Cleveland (and EMs in NY) if you lose you have a much shorter leash. If we aren't in the playoffs by next year EM is in trouble, becuase the media/fans will start piling on big time. What concerns me is that BB found a happy medium in NE dealing with the fans/media, and so far I don't think EM has.
I personally do not care if he announces who his QB is as long as the team and QB knows. However, don't pretend it doesn't matter that he's pissed off the local paperboys and the fans. If this backfires it will not look pretty, and they will be given the opportunity to eat him for lunch. Imo this isn't a big deal for the Browns per se, but could be a personal decision that comes back to haunt Mangini.
Against logic, the most effective armor is willful ignorance.

A) No I was not a fan of his in NY...he had a great rookie season...and instead of getting better...I felt the team kept getting worse.....I did not feel he was a good leader...and he has done nothing to show me he is...to date....He took Herm Edwards team and did well....then turned it into his team and did nothing
B) I made the sig...glad you like it....Love Paul Brown...Love Jim Brown...but seriously man...I know the Browns have 8 titles...and they were THE TEAM until about 1968...There were only 14 teams in the league in1964 during the last championship. Be proud of your history..you should be...but its been 45 years....and the NFL merger (the NFL AS WE KNOW IT TODAY) happened in 1970.
C) I sadly say this....I am not worried about the Browns in any way shape or form this year......and I am saddened by it. I miss the rivalry...I think the NFL is a better league with the Browns being a factor.......most people on here do not believe it....but I like the Browns...thats why I am here all the time....I respect the Browns...I want to see them do well. To me the Browns are like a little brother...Im the only one allowed to beat him up.......But I will say I really only think of the Browns of today as the little brother....I did not like them much before they left Cleveland.....but I missed them when they were gone.
D) Yes...I thought Romeo was a good HC...and I thought he would do well in Cleveland...but he obviously was not a good fit....So far the Mangini signing has looked just like all the rest.... year 1 most people love the guy.... year 2 more people join the I don't like the guy.... year 3 Why is he still here? Year 4 he is horrible worst coach in the NFL.

Yeah, he sure is losing sleep as a Steelers fan over Mangini's under .500 record resume A Steelers fan getting it...the irony...then again, it's not his fav team, so he can look at us more objectively....Hack isn't here to brag, bash or talk smack...he tells it how he sees it, get over it
Back to Mangini: He comes out and tells the whole world he HAS decided on a QB but HAS NOT told his players...that's what he said.....true or not, this is as childish as it gets

I have one thing to say about this. I have to laugh when steeler fans laugh at that it was 40+ years ago that we won a championship. However the Steelers dynasty was 30 years ago yet there fans will never shut up about that.

Let's take a look at how the media would percieve a what if scenario?
After 2 preseason games, Mangini names Quinn or Anderson as the starter? The tone shifts from the QB competition to a team that has 2 pretty good QB's. Each has strenghts and weaknesses, but the reality is that the Browns can probably win games with either one of them.
I think there is something to Mangini playing it close to the vest, to try and get a little advantage over Minnesota. Frankly I would be more worried about the old man and AP.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

Or we should talk about titles that are 45 years old?
In the modern era its been about Super Bowls.

It's damn foolish to argue about that stuff in this thread. Hack, you just keep on doin' what you're doin'. You've always been fair with your assessments as a poster, and it's good to have an outside perspective (even if it's from a Squealer).

Because you're a Steeler fan, I can see why it's convenient for you to discount football pre-1970. However, the Browns won 4 Championships in what was a supposedly weaker league (AAFC) then stepped into the NFL and won 4 more. - Proving that the AAFC wasn't weaker at all. As far as the 4 NFL titles - same exact thing as a Superbowl - no difference at all.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame is the authority on Pro Football History and it agrees with me.
As it stands today, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been in existence longer than the Cleveland Browns and have won fewer championships. - Inconvenient for you, but that's just the way it is.

Little Brother? Based on the fact that we have more titles than you, I'd say that's a clear display of misguided thinking.
Of course you didn't mind us after we left, during the 3 years we were gone the Steelers were able to draft guys like Alan Faneca and Hines Ward (just to name a couple.)
Win two more titles, then you can hang with us.
How about making me a sig?

I think Romeo Crennel was average to good coach during the week preparing his team.
But on gameday there was no one worse. Whether it was clock management, use of players, penalties, or lack of discipline from players. Romeo was pretty bad on gameday.
Nice guy, good coordinator, bad coach.

I think it will be Brady Quinn starting.
But for the life of me I will never get why Anderson gets hated on so much by Browns fans.
Here is what I know.
First year as a FULL TIME starter he makes the pro-bowl, yes he had a few rough games but it was his first full year starting. Give the guy a break.
Second year being a starter he suffers a concussion, line plays terrible, receivers can't catch and we have no running game. If you wanna say it's his fault then we will just say it was sophmore slump. Most NFL players go through it. Give the guy a break.
This would have been his third year as a starter and this is supposed to be the year that the light really comes on for players. But if Brady starts we won't know if Anderson was able to take that big step.
I will say I don't care who is starting I feel comfortable with both. But I have one question for everyone.
If Brady struggles a little bit this year but has an over-all good season and then struggles a little next year is he going to get a free pass because he is Brady or will he be burned at the cross like Anderson?

Yes, however you and I will both agree that it's important to remeber your franchises history. I don't ever brag about the Browns championships. However I wasn't even born when the Steelers dynasty was over. However you guys have every right to brag about your recent success.

If we don't talk about those then why the hell should we talk about the steelers superbowls 30 years ago? My only problem is when Steeler fans say what is convient for them. They act like 30 years wasn't that long ago but 40 years ago was a lifetime ago.

lol......so true. The only difference is Mangini won't get that long, because of his antics with the media/fans. I'm telling you bro he better win this year or the next or he's done (and most likely Lerner sells the team.......which might not be a bad thing).

Indeed, to Steelers fans, the 1940's,50's,60's aren't relevant, but the 1970's are. Also remember the Steelers have been in existence since 1933 while the original Browns started in 1946. - Also take into account that the Browns didn't exist for three years and came back as an expansion team. Forget about the "expansion" implications and the devastating effect that has taken on our franchise and look at the pure numbers. The Steelers have existed for 76 years and have won 5 titles, wait there was that fixed one against Seattle, - So they have won 6 titles. The Browns have been in existence for 63 years and have won 8 titles. That means that the Browns have existed for 13 years less than the Steelers and have won two more titles. What should also be discussed here is the fact that the Steelers development has never been ceased and forced to start all over in the way that Browns was back in 1999. - This part of recent history isn't discussed here. Steelhack loves the Browns, yet he doesn't want any of this mentioned.

his success might have been due somewhat to his ability to keep his players loyal even though belly was not fun. hopefully our coordinators can fill this role to some degree.
i don't think he was real big on organizational skills or accountability however.
mangini gets people riled up with his bunker mentality, but i feel his pressers reveal a lot of knowledge and evaluative ability. the things he is willing to talk about he goes into with great attention to detail, as far as why this or that is important.
for example, from 8/31 transcript. link Quote:
(On what he liked about both quarterbacks against Tennessee)- “What I really liked about both guys, and what I really liked about the offense over the last two weeks is, they’re doing some really smart things.
They’ve been disciplined with the cadence, and cadence to me is huge, because it keeps the defense off balance, it forces you to show your hand, defensively. If you can mix in quick counts, it’s harder to disguise. If you can mix in hard counts, it’s harder for the d-line to time it up and get off the ball and really get an edge on the offensive linemen. If you can use those different cadences to also have them declare what the coverage is, now you’re able to get pre-snap information.
I sit back there and use the cadence and now I know it’s post safety defense before the ball is even snapped, I know where to go with the ball. I know which reads should be live, which reads should be dead and that’s valuable.
One thing you’re always trying to do, defensively, is not give anybody pre-snap information. Not tell the quarterback where to go with the ball. Not allow the offensive linemen to know exactly how they’re going to block the run.
There was a play in the second half, where it looked like the tight end was uncovered and he just rose up, popped the ball to the tight end, Tennessee did, they were going towards the Dawg Pound. That was a function of, we showed it too early. If we just stayed out there, looked at that tight end, not declare that we’re coming, then the pop pass wouldn’t hit, or maybe he would have gotten it, but giving it away that early it just screams, ‘Hey throw it to me, I’m open.’ You never want to yell that.”
now, this says to me that we have a coach who is going to stress attention to detail. i felt educated by that, don't know about any of the press attending.
it says to me that we have a coach who wants to have it his way, not just by shouting the loudest, but because success can be dictated by these little things.
if this was romeo's presser he would have thrown a couple one liners out there and chuckled knowingly.
mangini gets bagged on because the media despises the fact he won't feed them what they want, but he sure is saying a lot about what HE wants. hes not just beating is chest up there.
whoever ends up QB will be more effective at the position than what we got out of it last year, and that attention to detail will have a lot to do with it.
i think its a welcome change from the styles of any past coach since the return.
JMHO go browns!

A very fair point. I think alot of us (not just Hack) forget this team really had no shot at being competitive in the 1st 5 years. Now however, this isn't an excuse after 10 years. This team is no longer at a competitive disadvantage due the expansion era. We should begin to see a competitive team on the field NOW. The ownership has had 10 years to get the right team in place. I mean we've had 4 HCs (not counting Robo), 3 head of football ops, and a gazillion different coordinators. In other words I think the fan base has been more than patient with the Lerner family during all of this. With that said imo if EM isn't the guy Lerner needs to sell the team and realize he's in over his head.
Anyway back to the thread.............Quinn will/should start...lol.

I said I like the EXPANSION BROWNS....I said I did not like the Browns before the move......hence the little brother...and hence I do acknowledge that your team was yanked away from you
You do know the NFL does not even acknowledge the AAFC records
Since the NFL does not recognize the AAFC's records, this technically makes the Browns the most successful expansion team in league history. However, the 1950 Browns were not an expansion team in any sense of the term.
I never brought this up...its been brought up on here many times before...and its just the same old arguements....but to me its turned into the equivalent of saying We won the Miss Ohio contest 8 times.....vs Winning Miss USA 6 times.....
It was a smaller contest...on a smaller stage...against smaller competition.....Heck most of the guys that played in that league were also milk men, and steel workers in the offseason.
Yes...I have 6 Super Bowls in my sig....but the Super Bowl is a modern contest that still happens every year from the current league.....Im sorry that bothers some of you so much.....Cleveland's championships are what they are...I do acknowledge them all...even if the league does not (AAFC)

It's a lot easier to be gracious with the "little" brother when the "little" brother is constantly inferior. Actually, it's very easy. You might be a good guy in real life, but what you're doing here is just stirring the pot. Some don't get that because you disguise it rather well. But you wouldn't say a flattering word about the Browns at all if we were splitting the series year after year or if the Browns had won a couple of Super Bowls recently. Heck, you probably wouldn't even be here. Because that would be a hard thing to do. What you are doing is too easy ... too easy to stir the pot ... too easy to disguise ... too easy to be gracious and wish us well ... wish us to be relevant again ... it's too easy to wish it when it hasn't happened and most likey won't happen for awhile ... and it's way too easy to wish it when you root for a team that could very well win it all again this year.
The thing that gets me though is none of us have any control at all over whether our teams win or lose ... yet we see ourselves as extensions of the winning franchises ... and we annoint ourselves the "well wishers" of the more pathetic franchises. You feel sorry for us and wish we were relevant again? Why? Because you have a hand in beating us down year after year? Hardly.
I would say stick to your own board, but I know people around here like you. Personally, I don't like the patronizing posts.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I agree with you on that.....I for one have been a Mangini supporter since we got him in here but I am growing very tired of this hush hush bullcrap. I really wonder what is going through his head....is he doing this just to play games with the media, showing how much of a tight ship he runs, rather than Savage/Crennel who would blab away all day long to who ever would listen....or does he actually think that the Vikings give two craps about who our starter is? They wont have to change the game plan much depending on who is the starter, and besides that this is a one and done...its not like he can keep this crap up all season....or will he try?

Some people need to follow a winning franchise and would rather rag on people who follow a team who dont win as much than hang with their own kind. They need something like that to feel like they are winners and need a sports teams accomplishments to have something over on someone else. The funny thing is (or sad thing, depends on how you look at it) is that they feel like it is their own accomplishment and put others down like they had something to do with it. Their true colors show when their team isnt in first place.

Couldnt of said it any better....I get tired of seeing his "kind words"....just wait til they start getting beat again and i am sure we will see him fade away....doesnt the Steeler nation have a message board? Or is it too hard for them to figure out how to make one? hehe

You realize this all started because I gave my opinion on the coaches and Mangini.....I never brought up CHAMPIONSHIPS or history...That was brought up by someone else in an attempt to PUT ME DOWN.
There are Browns fans on the board saying the same thing....when they do it...its opinion...when I do it...is a disguise at smack.
I like football...I live about 100 miles south of Cleveland and 100 miles west of Pitt....but I am surrounded by Browns fans....my best friends are Brown fans....my family is pretty well split between Browns and Steelers.
I do want a good Browns team...its makes the league more interesting....One of my favorite game memories is of the last playoff game between to the two......Yes..the Steelers Won..and thats why its a great memory for me...but I was on the edge of my seat....sweating....nervous.......it was fun....bragging rights were on the line.....
I have said it for years...this message board is my favorite on the NET...and a lot of it is because of its members...and when it comes to talking football except me into the conversation.....I gave my opinion...and in this case it was a negative on Mangini...but it was PRO RAC.
FYI I also think Art Modell should be in the Hall of Fame....yes at the end he screwed over Cleveland...but the man did a lot for this league for a very long time.
In the end though...your right...this is my fault...I let myself be drawn into the HISTORY ARGUMENT...where I normally just turn the other cheek.

Now i think you are just fishing for responses....bringing up the playoff game, modell...and continuing to rub it in our faces......I love how you bring up sore subjects in your post in an attempt to dig at us, I wonder tho why do you post on a Browns message board if you are such a diehard Steelers fan?
I wouldnt go to a Steelers message board, I would rather post, and interact with Browns fans. That is unless you are a closet Browns fan...

Besides being off-topic some of these posts are borderline smack. Someone will get slapped for that. HACK has been a member in good standing on this board for years. Some of you pups were looking at his posts from an odd angle and responded so. Mangini made his QB decision immediately if not before the Titans game. Why do I think this? ... How many of you remember Bernie Kosar being disappointed that he noticed Quinn saw the safety come up yet he didn't audible out of the running play but instead ran right into the strength of the defense? I'd bet we all saw that and after Bernie's comment we wondered about it too. Then in Mangini's press conference he was asked about that. Mangini said it was a decision to not change the play call because he wanted to see how his OL was going to adjust for the extra defensive guy. That happened two plays in a row basically killing, or attributing to killing the drive Quinn had going. Follow me on this... now if Mangini was in the midst of a QB competition and was seriously evaluating his QB's and trying to be as fair about it as possible, why would he put one of them in the hole by basically killing a drive in order to evaluate his OL? This is why: Because, I believe, he already knew what BQ could do, had already made his QB decision and was not concerned in the least that Quinn got shorted on that drive. Forward to the next game, #4. Where was DA? I saw him on TV on the field for warm ups as the game was ready to begin and the announcers were talking about the QB's. They showed a clip of them both during warm ups but during the game the only QB I saw on the sideline was BQ. Maybe that was my oversight so this may not be any evidence. But I don't remember seeing DA at all throughout the game. Someone mentioned seeing the two of them laughing and joking toward the end of the game but what they saw, what they referenced, was BQ and Bartell, not DA. I could be wrong about this, but if I'm not then DA was sitting on the bench with his head out of the game. If any of that holds water then the team knew who the starting QB was BEFORE the last preseason game. No matter what Mangini says right now, I believe he'd made up his mind and told the team after the Titans game. Just throwing that out as sort of my own conspiracy theory of what is going on behind the scenes since Mangini won't tell me. But I think his actions already told me. So my statement is: Brady Quinn is the starting quarterback and the entire team knew it before the last preseason game even kicked-off. So there.

So when I say NICE THINGS....its bad and when I say bad things...its bad
I am on several Steeler boards right now....see..you can open multiple window tabs...and have multiple website open all at the same time....Im also on the Raiders board right now.....I spend time on Raiders, Browns, Bengals (horrible board...they don't let other fans even post except in the SMACK SHACK) Redskins, Jags and Dolphins..tried to do the Ravens board...but I can't even register.

WOW dude you got alot of time on your hands.....
I think alot of us take your post as hidden insults....you seem to bring up sore spots and tend to rub stuff in our faces. I have no problems with you personaly...but some of your post rub me the wrong way.
Back to topic at hand tho...I think Quinn will be named the starter....DA will be shopped around, I am split on this tho should we keep him and over pay, or should we trade him and hope Quinn doesnt get hurt....I dont like the feeling of having Ratty as our back-up

Why start a new QB thread? Everything has been pretty peaceful around here.
Any, you are wrong, Mangini has not named his starter, publicly or privately. Mangini declined to name his starter for Sunday's season opener against Minnesota. Before practice Monday, he said he has not yet told Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson who won the job.
If this is true, he should be fired right now..

Seriously.. I don't care if he does not tell the media or fans but to not tell DA or BQ or the team is flat out wrong and a bad coaching decision. This whole Belichek tree and how the operate is rediculous.. If this is true because let's face it, who knows other then the team, and I was the owner of this team I would fire Mangini and Kokinis for hiring him.. This is embarassing..

Actually this team should have been competitive 7 years ago and continuing..it hasn't for all the reasons we 'd repeated year after year..and this year is no different..one factor always is the same ..QB...whenever we get some solid QB play this team will go to the next level..oh BTW I don't think Rac was a good HC...even if he had a veteran team..I don't think his style works..as a HC, he viewed it from the eyes of a coordinator.....not the head guy..think about that for a while.. Lastly..Quinn is the starter..

I guess you dont have the link where Mangini stated that he is going to have both QBs in his office individually and tell them who won the job and why? The team knows who the starter is. As much as you follow the Browns, I would expect you to know better. Its evident that you are looking for any reason to bash Mangini or any reason to bash the Browns. You try to make it look like your here to talk football so you can bash them here, where we can all read it instead of the smack shack
I would put money on it that Tomlin will not win a Super Bowl win Dick Lebeau retires. Most of his accomplishments have come from Cowhers leftovers of players and coaches.

I'm not picking on you specifically, but I have to say this: Hack is a good poster. He's a Steelers fan who has posted in here about football and has also discussed other things going on with life in the Tailgate lot. He'll even be here after we beat the Steelers this season (knock on wood).

All I can say is I really REALLY hope that if Mangini decides to put Anderson out there that our own fans don't boo. Anderson is still a Cleveland Brown, even if he's not the golden (dome) boy.
