Colts DB Doss eyes return to Ohio

12:10 p.m.

MIAMI — News and notes from Super Bowl XLI:

* REMEMBER ME: Former Canton McKinley and Ohio State star Mike Doss is with his Colts team, but unable to play because of knee surgery in October. Doss says he’ll be ready for minicamp next season, but clearly sees the writing on the wall and has the mindset of leaving the team in free agency. “Tell Phil Savage that if he doesn’t sign me in free agency, he’ll be making a big mistake," Doss said.

Now.....before everybody gets all crazy.

For years we have been saying that this team will turn around when we start having players that want to be here, I am not sure of what Doss will be looking for but he has been a better safety for the colts than any safety we have had here since 99. I would love to see Doss & Jones patrolling the secondary, it would give us a tremendou physical presence over the middle and while not quite the run support guy that Sanders is, Doss is pretty solid coming up to defend the run. While we still have Poole as a safety, I think that Brodney showed that he has talent to be a CB considering he was thrown in there. Brodnye would make a hell of an imposing corner.

We would have pretty good depth in the DB for sure.

What do Y'ALL think??

I know he was pretty good in high school and college, but I don't remember hearing all that much about him in the pros. Maybe I'm wrong...

I love the fact hat people are strting to want to "come home". As all other theories aside, I only see this as a reflection of our team "getting on the right track".

I noticed that he's had only 7 interceptions in 4 seasons. It also looks as though he may be prone to the injury bug too.

He has bitten by th ebug a few times but it is because of the way he plays. I will gladly take a guy getting hurt because he is trying to decapitate somebody over the middle over the some of the china doll players we have seen here.

I would love to see Mike Doss punish somebody like Ward at CBS. The smile would be gone permanently

From what I've seen, Russell and Jones are both pretty hard hitters as well, though, aren't they?

As long as he comes on board on the cheap...the more the merrier.

As for his position to start here. Sorry SS and your assessment of... " a better safety for the colts than any safety we have had here since 99."

Simply does not apply correctly to the play of Sean Jones.

Hey - he wants to come and compete with Pool n Hamilton and beats them out...super competition is good and if he proves better so be it. But he will more likely be looking as a sub or a nickel safety.

Pool btw - does not look good as a CB prospect. Only against slower big WRs like Mike Williams, Keyshawn Johnson, etc. etc. Just cause he was forced to play the position last season does not a CB he make.

i had vision of Percy Ellsworth and Robert Griffith in my head i hadnt forgot about mr. jones I just misphrased my statement.

On the cheap is the only way. It still makes me feel good to see guys wanting to come home though.

It would cause some realignment but as you said, competition is good. When we have to start cutting guys and other teams pick them immediatley we will know we are getting close. As you know.....it is currently the other way around.

Would love to have him... he's more known as a run stopper than pass defender.. but if we could get him cheap I'd love to have him in Cleveland.

Glad we agree with most...yes not that long ago ( Ellsworth & Griffith) but testimony that Savage actually knows what he is doing and has us moving in the right direction.

I too think its great we have this wealth of Ohio talent wanting to come home and make their beloved Browns great.

1. they feel we are a team that belongs to Ohio now.
2. a team heading in the right direction...and make no mistake about it. Carmen drove Ohio out of the process while Savage has embraced it and has made a point to access players who WANT to play here.

Unfortunately Safety is like one of the few positions I feel us being very comfortable with as in our talent level.

He is not a need, but I would love to have Mike Doss here. He's tough, physical, and a good run stopper. If he came here we would have a great rotation of safety's and maybe he could play almost like a linebacker in running situations. If not he could replace someone who's not so good against the run in running situations. I say bring him in for a "cheap" price.

Just to play Devil's Advocate a bit for a second.....

... any chance that we're seeing more of this because a.) We've got a bunch of cap space and b.) we need people pretty much everywhere. They are simply advertising themselves to the potential highest bidder and then tossing in the hometown connection as an added 'extra'.

Geez, for a team that nobody wants to play for or coach for, there sure are alot of people that want to come here all of a sudden

I don't really know how Doss stacks up to Jones and Pool... But if he's an upgrade to Russell,, fine, bring him in.. From an ability standpoint, Russell is our weak link.. But from a brains standpoint, Russell maybe the smartest safety we have by all accounts.

But like I said, if he's an upgrade,,, Go for it..... Otherwise,, I just wish him well...

Loved him in College however,,,, He was a gamer for sure.

I didnt even know he was set to be a free agent, this is the first I have heard of it. Is he still under contract and hoping to be let go?

I would favor bringing him in if he's cheaper than Russell. Otherwise, I'd just stick with Russell.

I understand all of that, I just wanted to put the other side of the spectrum on the table before everyone went skipping hand-in-hand down the "They All Love Us" Highway

Some will legitimately want to play for their childhood team, for others it is just dollar signs and this is their time of year to market themselves. They have from early January until the end of February to boost their perceived stock value and get their names being discussed in the towns with the money to hire them and anything they can do to help their cause is an asset to them including a love affair with local talent.

Finally, players like Doss are the ones that have just finished their rookie deals and are looking to cash in on what is historically the big money maker contract for any player. This one is THE Golden Goose.

Everyone on our roster is prone to the injury bug. Anyone who does and ever will play for cleveland will be injury prone. Before Baxter got here, he never missed one game, then he comes here, his career is over, bentleys career is over. plus anyone who plays football is injury prone, playing one of the most physical sports you are likely to get hurt.

I would love to see him here, it seems like more people want to play for the browns than you hear about other teams, its great!

I think he would be a good fit and I think Pool could play corner if he his given the chance. Alot of people threw him under the bus because he got burnt a few times playing corner but people seem to forget he was playing 3 positions and special teams. when you have to learn 3 jobs and play on ST you aren't going to be spectacular at any one of them. The same principal applies at work, if you boss makes you do a anti money laundering job, a audit job, an accounting job, and be the office manager, you are going to make mistakes in each one and be stellar at none. But if you just work in accounting persay, you have the potential to be stellar in that.

that is what brodney needs is to play one position, not to be asked to play S, CB and LB all throughout each game. Opie and Rac have said many times that Brodney is the best athlete on the team, if he is given the chance to play only CB or S, he will excel.

And considering how many positions he did play this year, i thought he did a hell of job.

Doss, Jones and then Pool as a power CB, wow!

Mike Doss is a classy young man. I know him from his high school days. He plays tough and is a good leader. He did stay for his senior season at Ohio State. Good guy.

He was being phased out of Indy's defensive plans. Too much of a liability in pass coverage. I hate saying that, because I really like the guy, but it's true.

As far as him wanting to come to the Browns. I think Mike wants to play somewhere next year and you might want to keep in mind he was talking to a reporter from the Ohio area. I think that might have influenced this comment: “Tell Phil Savage that if he doesn’t sign me in free agency, he’ll be making a big mistake," *L*

As much as i love doss...i rather stick with Jones/Pool/Russell.... they all can hit and cover....well Jones and Pool can both cover.....and i know the knock on doss was that he can't cover as well as he can run stop....who knows mayb he has changed over the years...but i could be wrong...

Jfect, we have no idea that Bentley's carreer is over, nothing official has ever been announced. I will bet anything that Bentley returns to the lineup, if not in 2007 then in 2008. Now Baxter may very well be done. That's a hell of a injury to try and come back from.

Does anyone remember Doss shooting a gun outside the nightclub? Maybe he fit in with the Ohio team down South.

I think Doss plays SS. Russel plays FS. Doss, even in college, got beat on deep plays.... ala Griffith. I wouldnt mind him coming to Cleveland for compitition on an incentive laden contract. If he can win a starting position, he gets paid. I doubt he wants to play specail teams while sitting the bench.

I'm gonna have to agree with Eo on this one. Pool does not look like a very good CB prospect at all. He does not seem to have the awareness and speed needed to cover the better WR's in the league.

I think Pool will need a couple of seasons for the light to come on, much like Jones needed. I would much rather see Samuel or Clements as the CB opposite of Bodden.

I'll have to admit that I liked Doss at OSU but I'm not so sure he's really much of an upgrade to our current Safeties? Maybe over Pool because of Pool's inexperience but damn we just need to give Pool some time much the way we gave Jones some time. I'd give Pool through the 2008 season for the light to really come on, if it doesn't then we'll know we have to replace him.

What if he packed on some pounds to become a linebacker, like Thomas Davis did for Carolina? I know he'd still be a little small, but he'd be faster than most LB and he's always been a good tackler. I'm not saying that thats what he should do, just throwing the idea out there and i think it could work.

How much is Russell going to want to return? If he wants the keys to CBS then Doss would be definetly worth considering. BTW I like hometown boys because I have a little more faith those guys want to bring home a winner as much as the fans do. When you have a losing situation like we have, I have to wonder how many players really care and how many are just picking up a check. IMO The more guys we have that really care the sooner the worm turns for us.

Guys this is something i've never thought about before...it just hit me...

Do you guys think having too many "home" guys is a bad thing? do you think that sometimes you have to put the emotions aside and focus on the game? If they love the browns as much as we do that they might play with too much emotion sometimes and the team wouldn't last as long because everyone could be falling apart in the locker room if we aren't winning games? people would be quick to point fingers and play the blame game?

I guess that would be the other end of spectrum if u ask me....one can also argue that emotion could be a good thing cuz then they can hold ppl who are responsible for the downfall w/o worrying about politics? who knows...
