oldmut...where to begin responding to your post??
Quote:
So Randy Lerner is smart enough to know that changing coaches every 2 or 3 years is not condusive to winning games! Ha, only took him 10 years to figure that out! In the meantime us fans sat patiently for him to learn ownership.
old...you do know that "Randy" Lerner has been the owner since his father "Al" Lerner died in Oct. 2002?.....and has not been the owner for the last 10 yrs?
Quote:
I'll give EM his time because indeed he needs it to install his sytem and his people, but in 3 or 4 four years if there is zero yield should we remain patient!
Old...your the second person to respond to my post and credit me with something I did not even say...I never spoke the words, zero yield or yield...did I?
Old...you may not like to hear the truth about the current status of this franchise and you can jump up and down and act like someone owes you a Championship...because you have been a long time Browns fan (welcome to the crowd, I've been a fan longer than you)...but all your jumping up and down is not gonna make it happen before Mangini gets this team revamped and that is going to take years...maybe 2 or 3.
Let me see if I can make you understand the basic point this way...If the Browns don't meet your expectation after next season, do we fire Mangini and hire a new coach?
Now I realize why I don't post here very often...

Exactly how did I try to credit you? You stated that it would take Mangini time. I agreed saying because he needs time to install his system and his people. How long are we to remain patient?
I'm figuring 3 years should yield something and I'm ok with that...my quote not yours.
And you'll have to show me where I said I'm owed a champioship! Due a championship? Long overdue, but owed, I know better regardless of how silly you want to make me look.
And as for the rest of your post I'm not sure where we disagree! If I stated I'm good with giving Mangini time why would you end your post trying to drive a point home that I'd already agreed with?

New to these boards, I'm depressed about the Browns and need some well thought answers. I can live with having a bad team, but a bad team that never seems to be getting better? Help me out with understanding some of these things.
1) Why do teams rise and fall but the browns stay bad? What are we doing so differently that's keeping us on the bottom?
2) Why do we want/need a new quarterback every 2-3 years? Have we really had this bad of luck going through 10 QBs in 10 years, or is there something else making them look worse than they are?
3) With every poor season, I feel like we dig a deeper trench and that right now it would take a miracle just to be mediocre. What needs to happen right now for the Browns to reach 8-8?
4) Why do other teams seem to make 8-10 yard throws on 3rd and 8 and the Browns seem to throw sideways on long 3rd downs?
5) Please give me a reason to believe that these guys will eventually contend. Every year I'm a little more despondent and a little less passionate...
We have a horrible owner who doesnt know his buttock from a hole in the ground. Just because hes worth billions, doesnt mean he knows a lick about what it takes to win at the NFL level.
Hes a soccer owner, his focus is in England, the Browns are a money maker, he doesnt need to win to make money here. If he had to win to make money, he might educate himself as to how to go about winning. All that is needed is to create some buzz, give the fans alittle hope, and they'll open up the check books.
We are not successful because we have no real front office, we have an Owner, an all-powerfull HC, and his assistant "GM".
EM did nothing in NY to warrant being given mega-control of a franchise. And objective person could see the disaster on the horizon...objective is a they key there. As always Browns fans ate it up, yada yada, EM is awesome...yada.
Nothing is going to change until we have a real CEO/GM that runs this team, someone as smart as Phil Savage, but with more tact. Allow that person to make football decisions instead of a passive dumb owner.
Randy picked RAC and EM, then he threw Savage into it...Savage never got the chance to be a real GM, and I mean by choosing his coach. Randy should have either kept Savage and allowed him to choose his guy and make a go of that, or go after someone like Kevin Colbert to be the CEO/President/GM of the team and allow him to hire a HC.
We will never win with the current structure, NEVER. Until Randy either sells the team, or hires football people to run the franchise, we will be 5-11 from here out. There are only a few select, proven beyond proven Coaches that warrant full control. Shanahan and Cowher are the only 2 available that warrant that kind of power, and neither are gonna get close to this mess of an organization.
Instead, Randy didnt do that. He made another stupid call wanting to copycat the Pats and hired another wannabe Bill and gave him full power.
Result? Watch us this sunday against the Rats.

The Browns are a bad football team today due to "CHANGE".
The Browns have been in a near "constant" state of change since returning to the NFL in 1999.
An old argument that doesn't hold a drop of water.
Being patient with the likes of Courtney Brown, Tim Couch, Gerrard Warren, William Green, Quincy Morgan, Sean Jones, Dennis Northcutt, Kevin Johnson, Kevin Shaffer, Jajuan dawson, Travis Prentice, Melvin Fowler, Kevin Bentley, Chaun Thompson, Lee Suggs, Chris Crocker, Charlie Frye, Luke McCown, Travis Wilson, Rahim Abdullah...........
Yeah, so much for that argument.

Understand what you're saying........................That Lerner doesn't give enough of a crap to look after an investment where he's going to pay some $100+ million dollars in salary alone every single year.
Yeah. Right.
Ummmm, as long as the Browns keep selling jerseys and season tickets in a city that has so much passion for their Brownies, I think Lerner only cares about profits and the value of the team. Once he realizes it takes work as an owner to win and not listen to the people he has around him, the Browns fans are going to get fed up and quit going to games and buying merchandise, and Lerner will sell the team. Once that happens, the Browns will be contenders. They will never win a SB under Lerner, but they will when he sells it.

Which is why fired Savage and Crennel with years left on their contracts, right?
I wish you gents really understood that you're stating quite clearly he only cares about money, but by losing he has no clue he's hurting the value of his franchise. That equals money.
Wow. Just wow.

Lerner may not be the greatest owner ever but he certainly isn't the worst. Is he cheap like the Bengals Brown? Nope he spent big money on Stallworth, Steinbach, Bentley...etc Is he crazy like Al Davis? Nope, I never wake up wondering if my owner is going to trade our 1st round pick for a punter or draft a kicker in the first round.
Sure he's made some bad choices. I still defend Crennel as most thought he was a good HC candidate and Savage from the outside looked like a good GM. However, when Lerner discovered there was a problem he took care of it. To be honest it's far to early to give up on Mangini. One thing I honestly think that Lerner wants the Browns to be a winner.
Go Browns!!

Pat Bowlen and Al Davis have as much passion as anyone. You see how far it's gotten those franchises. The Cowboys haven't won a playoff game this century. Jerry Jones and his passion are really working miracles there.
Well you and I enjoy a football conversation as much as anyone. And in the 10 years or so we've been talking game this is THE most asinine thing you've ever said, ever.
But just to refresh how far it's gotten Pat Bowlen, Al Davis and Jerry Jones...let me painfully remind you.

You know damned well what I mean, and I'm not talking about teams they fielded ten years ago.
Like the Cowboys, the Broncos haven't amounted to much of anything since Elway left, and the good players the Donks did get they screwed away because of moves like hiring a kid of a HC who cost them a pro-bowl caliber QB.
Bowlen handed a freakin' KID full-control, and all that kid did was to blow up a good team by screwing around with Cassel.
Yeah, that's the great Pat Bowlen.
As for the Raiders...........please. Defend Al Davis. Tell me how great Tom freakin' Cable is. How about the entire Kiffin fiasco. Heyward-Bey.......Russell........Gallery.........selling off shares of the team to stay afloat.........yeah, those glory days of the 70's sure make up for today's errors.
Lucky for us Al Davis is running the Raiders, so that we can't be considered the worst team in the NFL.
Bowlen and Davis...........their "passion" has screwed up those franchises.
Nobody thinks of those pictures anymore, and you know it.
Jesus............Davis' picture is in freakin' black-and-white
Frankly, the talk that Lerner lacks passion, and therefore we field a sorry team is ludicrous. Bottom line? It makes zero sense.
It's mostly just a bunch of diehard fans who think the owner should bleed orange and brown. Horsefeathers to that. Money talks and BS walks, and Lerner has thrown more money at this problem than virtually any owner not named Jerry Jones.
Blame him for making bad moves, but there isn't a shred of evidence to support the false notion that he doesn't care.
Anyone........I mean ANYONE.........give me some evidence.
I can show that Mike Brown is a cheapskate owner who puts money ahead of winning. That's easy. So if the belief that Lerner is the same kind of cat, it should be a piece of cake for even the most simplistic fan to come up with one itsy-bitsy shred of evidence.......

I personally know Pat Bowlen and I know people on the Board of Directors of the Broncos. While I don't want to hash out all the things that are "at risk" with that franchise I can guarantee you that Pat will personally get involved with anything operationally that could deter the Broncos success.
You talk about him hiring a kid but would you do the same thing regarding the Steelers franchise. I'd love for you to defend that hiring. And what happened?
We could go on and on but Pat Bowlen is one of the last owners in the NFL that you should single out as a bad owner.
Al Davis has lost his marbles. I don't think anyone in their right mind would discount his passion for success though.
Finally Jerry Jones. He's an innovator. He's a politician. Hell he's many things that I despise but one thing I do know is that he's fully focused on building a successful NFL franchise.
What do I know about Randy Lerner?
He's what I will term a "Richy Rich".
He's never been responsible for anything and he's never had to do anything. I hate people like that.
And most of the people of Cleveland are like me too.
The one thing he's done in his life is purchase a European Futbol team with his father's money. And from all accounts he is highly involved. Which is great.
But from all accounts...
1. He lives in NYC. 2. He does not attend Cleveland Browns home games. 3. He wants the Browns to succeed and is an absentee owner.
If his team wins and improves the bottom line he's happy.
What else can I say?
Finito! The end.

Randy Lerner is a coaches dream as an owner.
He hires people, lets them do their jobs and backs them up in any way he can.
As an owner, the best way to back up your GM and HC is to spend the money when it makes sense to do so.
If you want cheerleading you might suggest to the front office that they hire a cheerleading squad because it's not the owners job to be a cheerleader.
Lerner wants a winner as much as any of you and he backs it up.

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was lambasted on this board for 2 years stating that this team will be a diaster until we hire a quality "suit" to run this franchise
Randy needs to go out, find a guy in the mold of a Steve Ballmer/Paul Allen make him President of the Franchise, hand him 10% ownership, give him final say and hiring and firing power and back away
Paul Allen madde the dismal Seahawks into a Super Bowl appearance in 4 years...Paul Allen is a former CEO of Microsoft
We need a smart suit here....
A suit can make the decisions to hire the right people because a suit hire very smart advisors and listens to them.
Until this team gets a smart CEO/Suit to run this organization...it will be a disaster...it will never win jack squat
wanna know the funniest part?
I KNOW personally, a guy with a MBA, has run 7 different Fortune 500 companies, has served as Vice President of a Large Corporation, and he has been President of a Prestigious College in Florida.
The guy has the experience, the smarts, and the know how to get the job done and to hire the right people to get the job done.
this man has been successful EVERY WHERE he has been in EVERYTHING he has done on a professional level...he is very good at hiring advisors that know what they are doing to advise him...as he stated to me, "your only as good as the people around you" this is his "key" he has a knack for finding quality advisors....he just has it...
He would right this organization in about 3 years...he told me years ago the Browns front office is a mess because its not structured properly, and it doesn't have qualified people running it...
He has told me he would "love" to run this franchise because it would be a new challenge for him, it would motivate him
this dude would take the job im telling you, and in 3 years, would would be beating the Steelers consistently....and our drafts and EVERYTHING we do would have purpose behind it, and you could definitly understand it.
regardless, until we get a CEO in here to run things, its pointless to hope for any type of longterm success....it starts at the top....and Mangini and Koke again are not qualified to run a NFL Franchise...coaches are qualified to coach...thats it...Koke is also classified as a coach because all he did was scout players
These guys know NOTHING about hiring quality men and quality advisors to make sound decisions
for this reason alone, Mangini and koke will fail here....sad but true...

Stating that they haven't won is completely and totally a separate issue from whether or not they want to. You think winning in the NFL is as easy as "wanting to"?

Our defense to me is OKAY.. Definitely could be better.. but it has always been our offense.. except for 2007.
I think this team needs a GREAT RB... I mean GREAT!! not a 6th rounder.. not a guy who shows some flash.. who shows some potential... but a GREAT RB... sad thing is those only come every so often...
Second... We have 3 of the 5 pieces at the moment.. 2 more needed ASAP!!
a good RG.. and a good RT...
Without a good offensive line.. and a GREAT running game.. every week will be the same... a LOSS..
Protect your QB.. Open holes for your HB.. and you are good...
We need a fresh.. keyword fresh bruiser in the backfield... ie Michael Bush.. Shonne Greene.. etc... Someone that can hit the whole hard and literally scare the defense...
People aren't scared of Jamal Lewis anymore.. the pitty pat William Green move is getting tiring... Davis is decent.. but I don't see a true starter in him.. great backup at the time. Harrison.. I really wanted this guy to shine.. but again.. He's not a full time back.. He is no LT.. no Forte.. no Bush... He is a role playing HB...
I have a question as well for Browns fans.. Why is it that offseason is ALWAYS the best season for Browns fans?

Knight, good luck with that.....hire a football person to run a football team....hhhhhmmmmmm.
Doesnt make sense at all.
I'd rather have Randy pick a HC he likes, and give him the keys to the team every 4 years!

WOW, this post turned into a debate over Lerner's impact on the team. I guess I'll weigh in as well.
Whether or not he cares about football, I have to believe that Lerner cares about his property value. By winning, it goes up, both dollars and prestige. If I was the Browns' owner for the last decade, I might want to hide in NY as well, based on the chances that 100,000 embittered fans might want to scream in my face.
But meanwhile, he wants the team to win, and when he has to make a hiring move, I'm sure he takes advice from the league, or smart football people and tries to hire who he thinks is the best guy for the job. Might another organization hire differently? Sure, but there's no guarantee that their picks would be any better. Add to this the constant upheaval of this organization, and it's just a volatile spot. Maybe some of the better coaches don't even want to come here, and decline the opportunity.
But what is unfortunate, is that these coaches and GMs are people like anyone else, and when they inherit 10 years of epic failure, there's no tolerance left in the fans. I've heard people screaming to fire Mangini before the first game. The papers, internet, radio, blogs, etc - when you bombarded by resentful fans (I am one too) telling you how bad you suck, I believe it affects you and the team negatively.
The Browns need more than most teams to climb towards success at this point. They have to get the pressure of 10 years of failure off their back somehow. It's like Trouble, they have to roll a six, just to get their token started on the board...
All that being said - I can accept losing as we rebuild. But what is killing me is 1 offensive touchdown in 8 or 9 games. Even if it's only 1 TD out of 2 for Mangini - the lack of offense is boring, sad, and draining me of hope. Browns aren't going to the playoffs this year - I wish they'd announce that until they can score some points, they're not allowed to kick field goals!!!

If you want something bad enough ( decent product on the field ) and have the time ( 10 years ) and the capitol ( daddy's money ) yet end up with today's Browns ; Then yes I will question your desire , your commitment ,

Interesting that you are defending his passion when that isn't the problem, but rather the mistakes he's made in decision making.
Which makes my point: Passion doesn't win games. Good decisions do.

Defending Tomlin isn't required because it was a good move. That's a deflection from the real point, which revolves around the basic concept of:
Passion or decision-making winning games.
Simply stated, McDaniels and subsequently Bowlen have been put on trial in this discussion, and to that end, McDaniels has been a huge screwup as a head coach.
What you're essentially trying to say is this: The Steelers hired a young coach and they've won, therefore hiring McDaniels wasn't a bad move.
That won't fly. Sorry.
So while Bowlens passion remains, his decision making flubbed it up.
Bottom line: Passion doesn't put a winning product on the field. Strong decision making does.
THEREFORE: Whether or not Lerner is passionate about the Browns doesn't make a hill-of-beans about the product on the field. Sound decision making and effort do. While his decisions have been utter failures, he's shown...........beyond a shadow of a doubt...........that he's willing to spend whatever he has to in order to win.
So.......again........saying he lacks passion and therefore is a bad owner is flawed.
I'm done.

He won on the "Immaculate Deflection" and then beat the world-class Browns.
You give him too much credit.
That sounds just like all the talk I heard about Crennel finally being vindicated as a good head coach when we went 10-6.
It's all spin to validate a flawed point that can't be proven.
Ok, no, seriously, I'm done now *L*
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

I'm not saying he's a good coach or not. But to call a coach who is 2-0 with an awful team a "huge screw up", is just not true.
If he turns this 2-0 start into a 5-11 finish, then sure... Huge screw up. But right now, you don't have a leg to stand on.

He simply beat the teams on his schedule by whatever means necessary.
It's what I would ask ours to do with some consistency.

I would not call McDaniels a "huge screw up" as a HC.
He did make some fairly large mistakes shortly after being named HC that ultimately lead to the loss of their Pro Bowl QB, though.
McDaniels definitely inherited a better football team in Denver than Mangini did in Cleveland. Denver has been a good football team for a long time, while the Browns have been the opposite for most of the last 10 yrs.
McDaniels will benefit from his early schedule but then the bottom could fall out on the Broncos and you could see them with a 3-8 record before their schedule eases a bit....5-11 or 6-10 could be a possibility for McDaniels first year as HC. Should the Broncos be better than 6-10, I would say that McDaniels did a good job in his first year as a NFL HC.

To everyone demanding Lerner sell the team... Who is he going to sell it to?
I had heard Under Armour was interested. I read that somewhere. Maybe on this board....

http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/article/125856Lerner denies there was sale conversation between Under Armour's Plank. Needless to say, I would not be shocked if there was a legit interest.

The biggest joke is that the Cleveland Browns are profitable..why? Because of us..the fans..Lerner spends the money that "we" give him every Sunday..yeah his dad had the capital to "buy" the team but we are the ones who pay for it year after year..the perfect scenario would be for Lerner to sell the team to the "fans", much like the Green Bay Packers are "owned"..the problem IS ownership! There are football minds out there who can take this group of current player and make them winners while they add their own players through the draft and free agency..Bill Parcell's comes to mind! Man I am jealous of the Dolphins!!

1. There are many factors that go into this. But I'll narrow it down to one. Overall bad decision making from the top down. We've had 4 different coaches in 10 years. No team can recover from that overnight. We have no stability at all. Every time we change coaches, they totally overhaul the roster to fit their scheme. The problem with that is, the coach never seems to be here long enough to see it through. So then it's starts over again with another coach. A lot is riding on Mangini to last longer than his contract. Another coaching change will set this franchise back another 5 to 10 years.
2. See above.
3. See above. We can't keep changing the GM's and coaches every few years.
4. Many reasons. Bad coaching. Bad decisions. Players just not being aware of the situation. The defense has everything else covered.
5. There is no way to tell if this team will eventually contend. If it continues to follow this same road. It could be a long, long while.

The tone of the organization is set by ownership not by a coach. The best franchises seem to have passionate, involved ownership. Not absenteeism.
When Al Lerner died, his kid inherited the team. The guy seems like a complete nincompoop. And the fact that the guy was handed the keys to one of best and most beloved franchises in all of professional sports.....
...and then went out and bought another professional sports franchise is about all you need to know.
This franchise is adrift. And it all starts with ownership.

And on the Tomlin vs. McDaniels I'd argue that McDaniels had the better credentials and background.
He's undefeated right now. Let's give him at least until he's lost a game until we brandish the complete failure label.
I do know that he completely outsmarted the Browns by putting in the Jumbo set then flanking his TE out wide for a college defensive end to guard. Quick slant. TD.
That was a nice move. Would like to see it sometime from our team.

Egads!! We'd have a new GM every two years, a new coach every year and a different starting qb every game.

It's relavant that at one point there was interest out there. I'm not saying there is interest currently. But the poster I replied to asked who would purchase the Browns....

I see the relavance. It shows that here is interest out there and I think Under Armour would be a great owner. Some fans want a CEO, why not one that started from scratch to make the product it has become. Although Im not a huge fans of CEOs since profit is all they care about and wouldnt Lerner be considered a CEO? Under Armour would also give the team some national name recognition that might be recognized by some players and their agents. Especially ones that try to find endorsements for their athletes. Thats one thing I never understood. How agents try to promise all this money, yet they try to hold the team hostage instead of finding endorsements.
Good find Raleigh
