Quote: I just remembered this one movie and wanted to see if anyone else saw it. It was called "The Moth Man Prophesies" It said it was based on a true story and its based in Ohio along the Ohio River. I was wondering just how accurate the movie was since it says it was based on a true story. Did a bridge ever collapse on the Ohio River?
Yeah, it happened in the 70s. It was the Silver Bridge, running between Ohio and Point Pleasant, WV. Whole thing went down w/ bumper to bumper traffic on it. Tragic.
I used to be infatuated by Mothman. Used to check out any book I could find about it. There are a bunch of freaky stories that didn't even make it into the movie. It started out w/ everyone supposedly seeing this giant winged thing w/ red eyes and people started thinking it was a warning of impending danger or something like that. Supposedly, it was never seen again after the bridge collapsed. Not sure I believe any of this, but as a kid the stories spooked me real good.
I sent a demand to have Paranormal Activity in a theater near me. I got an e-mail yesterday saying they hit the 1 million demands it needed and it will be opening nation wide.
Quote: the ORIGINAL texas chainsaw massacre. awesome.
and its more or less a true story.
not exactly. they loosely took some bits and pieces from some of the things that happened with ed gein back in the 50's... guy did some messed up stuff. took place in wisconsin though.
that movie scared the hell out of me the first time i saw it. usually slasher flicks like jason and halloween follows the exact same template, there's always a girl that lives who's kind of a goodie-two-shoes, sometimes a guy makes it with her, and all of her drug loving, sex having friends get cut up.
well, i honestly thought the girl at the end of that movie was going to get it, i was almost sure of it. i actually saw that movie long after ive seen all the jason, freddy, and michael meyer flicks, and the original blows all 3 of them away in terms of how good the movie was.
Yeah, they say good ol' Ed Gein was also the inspiration for Norman Bates and Hannibal Lecter too. Totally nutso thing to happen in a rural community in the 50s.
I hear you about the original Chainsaw. When I first saw it, it really got under my skin. It just has this grimy look to it that makes it almost feel real. Like its a documentary or something.
Quote: There is NO WAY he stays so still as not to flinch with all the crap going on. Plus, the one dude is a DOCTOR, he is going to know if the dude is dead or not!!!
Well you didnt watch it close enough...He took med's that slowed his hart beat & breating down to the point he seemd dead.

Yes it did...look it up, but there was some think's in the movie that was not so close to the real story.
Not too far from me, as the crow flies, but 5 years before I was born.
I didn't care for The Mothman Prophecies, except for every part with Debra Messing
My favorite scary movies would be Poltergeist (I HATE that stupid clown!) and The Ring. I much prefer the eerie stuff over the make-you-jump stuff or gory slasher movies; they're just too formula plotted.

Next Monday morning at 8:30 on A&E they have a show called Paranormal State. They are doing a half hour show on the Mothman. Its actually more West Virginia than Ohio.
It wasnt scarry but I use to be a fan of Critters. I thought it was funny and havnt seen it mentioned yet.
Like I said earlier, they movie that scared me the most and made me lose sleep was Communion with Christopher Walken. Not many people have heard of it but it was a movie based on a true story about a family being abducted by aliens.
QUOTE- "...i was flipping channels the other night while sitting in the dark living room at about 2 in the morning. I think it was called Strangers..."
I liked the foriegn movie that "Strangers" was based on better. It was called "Them". I like foriegn horror movies better, " A Tale of Two Sisters", the original " Funny Games" from Germany, " The Orphanage". I liked Ringu better than "The Ring" also.
Ever since the 'Blair Witch Project' -- the super minimalist horror flick (made for $100,000) with the maximum amount of scary (and profit -- it grossed $248 million worldwide) -- appeared on the scene 10 years ago, people have been searching for something that will give them the willies as effectively as the freaked-out-in-the-woods flick did. The movie industry, of course, is looking to duplicate the low-budget film's wildly successful box office and this Fall, there's not one, but two, new pictures vying for 'Blair Witch''s title of Most Realistically Creepy Scary Movie.
The 'Blair Witch' terrified everyone by not showing too much; the filmmakers kept you in the dark, and let you listen to the sounds, the rustling of the trees, and then you'd get a glimpse of something moving just enough to send a chill down your spine. The first movie that taps into the 'Blair' juju, 'Paranormal Activity,' gives you the creeps far more effectively than the other movie ('Fourth Kind' ... keep reading). The 'Paranormal' plot is very simple: a new couple move into their new suburban house, and the boyfriend, in an attempt to nullify his girlfriend's claims that ghosts follow her wherever she goes, sets up a video camera in their bedroom to film what doesn't happen when they are sleeping. Except he's proven very wrong.
In the trailer, which is a clever combo of footage of audiences viewing it for the first time and losing their minds with snippets of some of the more chilling scenes from the movie, you see a sheet rustling, you hear a whistling sound, you see a door swing open, you see faint outlines of footsteps, and bruises on the girl. Though realistic, the filmmaker, Oren Peli, doesn't make any real overtures into convincing you that it's based on a true story; just a "what if?" scenario, which is far more effective.
Like 'Blair Witch,' Peli's budget is low: $15,000, and in this age of Twitter and Facebook and blogging, the audience takes care of much of the marketing, for free. By using Twitter and the website, fans are supposed to request screenings to get the movie to their town; once it's reached a certain number, the movie is shown at a theatre near you (and once they reach a million requests it's going nationwide). Typically, Paranormal Activity is shown at midnight, which is a perfect way to send you home to bed, absolutely terrified. Scary Grade: 9 out of 10. Realistically Real Grade: 8 out 10.
Then, there's 'The Fourth Kind,' an alien abduction movie; the title is a reference to the different kinds of alien encounters -- abduction being the fourth. It purports to be based on real events in Nome, Alaska, and mixes old documentary footage shot in the seventies when the events took place, with the real psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler's, face digitally erased. The filmmaker, Olatunde Osunsanmi, combines fictionalized footage, with Milla Jovovich in the title role, who tells us, "that everything in this movie is supported by archive footage; some of what you are about to see is extremely disturbing."
As for the footage: the people are supposed abductees relating their encounters to Tyler. They tell us about seeing owls, which are really aliens, by their window. She hypnotizes them and they freak out and scream and reveal that it wasn't really an owl. One person levitates ... sufficiently disturbing. However, it appears that the marketing campaign to convince everyone that this is the real deal wasn't given a thick enough layer. An Alaskan newspaper has already poked holes in the "based on real events" premise, stating that there's no record of an Abigail Tyler in the state board or in any profession in the state of Alaska. So much for that. http://community.adn.com/adn/node/143292 Scary Grade: 7 out of 10. Realistically Real Grade: 4 out 10.
Quote: That's nothing If you want really scary sit down at home during the day, and watch lifetime movies with your wife AHHHHHHH now THAT'S SCARY
What's so scary about watching some dude in a tank top beating the crap out of his wife/girlfriend/next-door neighbor for 90 minutes? what's so scary about watching the formerly abused female rise up at the end, to kill Tank Top Dude?
Oh, wait... I get it. The scary stuff ain't the movie, but the way your wife looks at you after the movie is over.
You may have a point there, GM....
[shudder]
p.s.- At the risk of sounding tremendously Politically Incorrect, I've believed for years that Lifetime is run by a whole bunch of Man-hatin' Lesbians who'd love nothing better than to see every happily-married woman in America leave their hisbands/boyfirnds after a steady diet of these cheap, formulaic movies. Now THAT is a truly scary thought...
My daughter saw "Paranormal" last night with friends. She thinks a lot of the recent horror movies are unscary, cheesy, and fake but she thought this one was scary and well done. Not bad for an $ 11,000 dollar movie.
Quote: based on a true story about a family being abducted by aliens.
true story? really?
KING
They threw that "based" in there ... which basically gives them artist license to make up anything they want.
I love the newer Hollywood term which is, "inspired" by a true story ... which can pretty much be any movie. Hell, Star Wars could be "inspired" by a true story.
One night I fell asleep on the couch w/ the TV on and woke up the second that scene inside the alien ship started in Fire In The Sky. The combination of such a freaky scene and waking from a deep sleep really wigged me out at the time.
