Hope I don't sound too Oprah-like right now. I can't get any of my friends to read anything I like. To top it off, they don't read period, so I don't get any recomendations. So I was thinking, what if we recommended a book a month to discuss. I'm too busy to plow through books like I used to so it will take me about a month. If you read my book, I will read yours. I'll make mine November, since October is about up. I want to say fiction only, but if you just have to recommend nonfiction, I will be willing to read it. If you don't want to read anybody else's and do the book club thing, maybe you can recommend me just one book. SIGN UP SHEET
November 2009 - 'The Road' by Cormac McCarthy (Brownoholic) December 2009 - ??? January 2010 - ??? February 2010 - ??? etc . . . . . .

We had a book thread on here a few weeks/months ago so I'm sure you'll get lots of dawgtalkers intrested. I'm currently starting Plum Island by Nelson DeMille thanks to brownsfansince79's recommendation. As far as a book I would suggest for us all to read, I'll have to think of one, but will definitely get back to you.

I don't read enough to join your club. I just don't have the time. The last book I read was The Hobbit and it took me over a year to read.
Back when I used to take the bus to work, I would plow through a book every 2-3 weeks. I even read 7-8 Shakespeare works and really enjoyed them. Now that I walk to work, I don't have that "reading time" set aside anymore.
I am planning on getting a book for X-mas (God's Equation). It's about Einstein, relativity, and other physics related junk.

I'm currently reading The Bible cover to cover. I'm trying to follow a plan to get through it in 90 days. I'm not an overly religious person, it's just something I've always wanted to do.

I have so many books I would like to read, ones that I have purchased and never got around to do it. With the weather changing I plan on hittin' the books.
Right now I am plowing through The Chomsky Reader. (Noam Chomsky) I plan on reading The American Future by Simon Schama next. Maybe then A People's History of the American Revolution by Ray Raphael.
I have Meditations (Marcus Aurelius) and He-Motions by T.D. Jakes I have leafed through both.
As far as fiction what type would you look for? Tom Clancy? James Joyce? (two of my favorites, if not an odd pairing, one for the political/military and the other for the stream of consciousness thinking . . . modernism.)

Can't speak for 79 but sounds good to me. Plum Island is sitting in my house right now, will probably start it tonight when I get home. However, 30 rock, The Office and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia are all on tonight so I won't get too far into the book.

I was hoping that we could all read the same book, discuss said book, and then repeat . . . . Because of this, it wouldn't matter what the genre was.
But if that's not going to happen. How bout you recommend me ONE fiction book. The one you would say I just HAVE to pick up next.

I was under this impression as well. The way I understood it is for example we all read The Road during November and discuss it throughout December while reading the next book?

Disclaimer: It's been a little while since I read Plum Island, but I think if we end up discussing it, I'll remember enough to have an intelligent discussion.
I will try my best to read The Road. With a newborn at home, classes, and work being pretty busy right now, I have a tough time finding time to read.
I just recently read "The Lost Symbol" by Dan Brown (the guy who wrote Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons), and I really liked it. But man, I was exhausted afterwards because I was reading that, keeping up with the kid, class, and work. I think I got about 3 hours of sleep a night for the week it took me to read that book.
But, I will try my best to get The Road. Just don't be mad if I can't or don't and TP my house.

I'll give it a try.. Feel kinda girly saying this but I just got finished reading the last Harry Potter book. And really enjoyed it... it's the only one I've read. All the others I just watched the movie. I'll Amazon The Road tomorrow.. looks like it's $10.

And no cheating. The movie adaptation of 'The Road' is out next month. And I read every Potter book. Nothing wrong with it. Just cause it got so dang popular (HUGE) doesn't mean it is bad.

You crack me up 79. I feel like I'm walking in your shoes. I have work, school, and 6 month old TWINS at home. I hardly ever get to read. I was just thinking "why did I start this THREAD???"

We should probably use my template for a sign up sheet, like when we do w/ the date our 1st round pick will sign. We could use your suggestion or 'Plum Island' as was mentioned earlier. I will read both now. What do you all think???

You're right, I'm sorry.
November 2009: The Road December 2009: Plum Island (instead of Democracy in America)
Or, since two of you are about to read Plum Island, we could do:
November 2009: Plum Island December 2009: The Road
Thoughts?

I've already read The Road.
I am suggesting we do it first and it will give me a chance to get started on the Plum Island and whatever else makes it on to the list.
But I'm easy. Either way . . .

The Shack?
I've heard this is a love/hate book so it'd be good for a book club because people will have a lot of different takes on it.
Just to clarify, the way thing is going to work is we're going to read The Road in November and discuss it through December while reading Plum Island.
Is that statement correct?

The ball's rolling. I looked up 'The Shack' on Amazon and am assuming we're talking about the most popular search, which is a Christian faith based novel. Correct? Either way, its on the list.
NEXT . . . .

Maybe you should take a few suggestions, run a poll in k9 consensus then go from there?
I was just tossing out some books I am in the midst of, most of which are non fiction, but I would love to read along with some of the other suggestions. As long as they are decent books, not something silly.
As for 79 suggesting Democracy in America . . .lol that book is quite the tome! May take some a few months to digest it all . . .
