Who is your favorite rock guitarist? I'm voting for Rik Emmett because I can't do this without putting his name on the list. It's how the lampster rolls. Besides that, he belongs.
Its hard to argue with Eric Clapton's body of work over 4 decades, but I really like Mark Knopfler's style of playing ... Making Movies by Dire Straits is one of my all time favorite albums, and Telegraph Road is in my top 5 favorite songs. Stevie Ray Vaughn deserves a mention too, although I suppose you could say he was more Blues than Rock 'n Roll.
Since the question is "favorite" and not who I think is best, I will say that I always loved Nirvana, so Kurt Cobain would be up there for me. Also, you just can't deny James Hetfield.
I voted for Hendrix, but I can always listen to Knopfler. His new CD that just came out "Get Lucky" is very solid.
As for people that aren't on this list, Warren Haynes, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, and John Mayer come to mind. While some will laugh at me putting Mayer on that list, he's an excellent young guitarist and other than Frusciante and Derek Trucks, probably the best young guitarist out there.
His electric stuff he plays is very much rock/blues. I always look at blues as rock because without blues, there sure wouldn't be guys like Clapton, Haynes, etc. Mayer's electric stuff falls in the Clapton genre, his acoustic stuff, well that's just pop music to get those young 20-somethings, not that that's a bad thing.
Oooh... forgot about Sonny. He's probably better known for his slide technique than his conventional technique, but you're right: he's excellent. I saw him play with Bonny Raitt and Eric Clapton and he sat in for a set during a Little Feat concert I saw in New Orleans years ago. Now THAT was cool.
I don't know that I'd put him ahead of Clapton, but I definitely take back the "not even close" comment I made before. Good call.

Man tough to vote on this. I chose "other". I play guitar so I cannot pick from a list that has some greats on it and soooo many left off of it.
Some of my favs are Pat Travers, Uli John Roth, Robin Trower,John Petrucci,Rusty Cooley, Paul Gilbert, takes a breath.... Shawn Lane R.I.P.,SRV R.I.P,Randy Rhoads R.I.P., Dave Mustaine, James Hetfield,John Lynch, KK Downing, Glen Tipton... The list goes on and on..
Einstein could not even fathom the mathematical improbabilities of the Browns woes.
Certainly could be a "favorite" (lots of posters here are trying to redefine that as best,...) because he is entertaining as all get out. Not a "best," but definitely a lot of fun,....

Where is the invisible line that we must draw to create individual thought?
My favorite is Slash. I mean the solo in Sweet Child of Mine is douchey awesome. He pretty much just shoved Axl Rose off stage and takes over. Then at the end Axl, just begging for attention after crawling up on stage, tries desperately to get back into the song by going, "Where do we go now" and carrying on. The solo is that epic that that's how I imagine it going down Axl Rose (although I really like his voice and know he is needed for GnR) is a little obnoxious and deserves it.
Politicians are puppets, y'all. Let's get Geppetto!
