He's definitely a Pats type guy and they would be a good fit for him, but I don't think it will happen in the 1st though. But at this point, he could be a 1st rounder or a 3rd rounder. I don't see any of the extremes (top 10 or anything lower than 3rd) happening.

Yep it's pretty much proven on here time and time again if your going to draft one you better do it in the 1st round............if not then don't waste another mid round pick on one, because the success rate there is next to nil. I want either stick with one of the 2 ugly ducklings, sign a FA, or if there is one we feel is the top notch then draft one in the 1st. I do not want to waste a mid round pick for a QB that has a 90% chance of failing.
People need to leave Tebow's name out of any discussion...stop being star struck with his size and so-called running ability..he's over-hyped..way too over-hyped...
I do not see him being a solid NFL QB..period..want no part of him nor Bradford.

i don't think he's overhyped, he's going to go down as one of college football's greatest.
but i don't think his game translates to the nfl. he definitely will be able to play in the nfl, but i don't think he's first round material.
i haven't heard a ton of talk about how great in the nfl he will be, i think most people are cautious with him being good in the pros.

He would flourish there because Billy knows how to employ men in accordance with their capabilities; he'll find a way to tweak the scheme to fit Tim in.

I agree.....only Tommie Frazier in my lifetime can make an argument as being a better college QB.
and while Timmy has a better chance than Tommie did at the NFL....I don't see the arm strength or the ability to put the ball into a small window that you need in the NFL.
also, with Timmy, follow the $$$.....he'll put butts in the seats in JAX.....JAX isn't selling out games right now....he'll sell jersey's.....only MoJo sells jersey's in JAX.....I don't know if they take him with their likely top10 pick, but I'd bet they are trying hard to trade back up for him from their 2nd pick.

He's so overhyped it's pathic..when he got hurt they were reporting every freaking day what was going on with him.. I could care less if he's declared as one of NCAA's greatest QB's..he's not..nor will he will be a great NFL QB..

I think I would like at least one seasoned vet who has some proven success; DA moping around with his head down is a whipped puppy. We need somebody who can achieve. The 1st round folks ought to review the overwhelming success that has given us (and how much it has cost in missed picks and huge "money for nothing" with no development. Sorry; not in the mood for projects. We can re-build again, do it all year all season, all off season, but if it is over a swamp, drain it first and build on something solid. A QB who is a known and proven producer for a change.

I'm sure the Ravens will just let a player under their control leave to go start at QB for a division rival.
I know what everyone is thinking, "We got Derek Anderson from them."
You're right. We did. But he was released and we claimed him.
Baltimore is not going to release Troy Smith. And they will probably tender him so if someone signs him they have to give up draft picks as compensation.
Troy Smith is not an option.
Oh Troy Smith is most definitely an option actually this would be a great move to force the Ravens hand.
We sign the kid to an offer sheet 4 years 12 mil 3.5 mil signing bonus
Force the Ravens to match...if they do, they have to pay him the above hurting the cap.
if not, we get a starter(the above is CHEAP) for a starter
guess what we give the Ravens?
a 4th rd draft choice, BIG DEAL...even if its a 3rd, Smith is "better" then any QB we could get in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th rds anyway
sounds like a win to me
regardless, I don't want a 1st rd Qb, i want a veteran..i just see a lot of upside in Smith thats all and he isn't a rookie...

I think Troy Smith would be a great option. He was going to be their starter till he got the Flu. The only reason people are so against him is the anti-Buckeye backlash. I would sign him in a heartbeat and that's not homerism. He has potential and has looked good when the Ravens have used him.

ok....in this day and age, anything good to great will be completely overhyped...that is just the nature of the 'information overload age'
however, what QBs do you think can claim to be better "college" QBs than Tebow in the past 30 years (so more current generation)....
I gave Tommie Frazier as an example
(completely unstoppable even though you knew what he was doing every play....plenty of comebacks where he willed Nebraska to wins....in the nat'l title hunt every year....2 National Titles....3 staright Nat'l title gamegs and won Nat'l title game MVP even in the loss to Florida State.....playing after the blood clot in his leg kept him out for months....against Sapp and Ray Lewis in the Orange Bowl saved the Huskers season and won the Nat'l title....)
Outside of that, Tebow's accomplishments blow pretty much anyone else out of the water....
Nat'l TItle as a freshmen....he wasn't the starter, but he basically was their redzone option as he was their short-yardage back as a QB...they don't win that title without Tebow.
as a sophomore....deservedly won the Heisman as he put up just silly TD numbers running and passing....no Nat'l title but they were a top10 team and Tebow was their offense.
last year as a junior...improved his passing and cut back on his running which cost him the Heisman but won the Gators more games and the Nat'l Title.
this year he has a chance to win his 3rd Nat'l title....2nd as starting QB....but all as a major contributor....I dont' think he does and his numbers shouldn't be good enough to win the Heisman.....and, the team is more balanced this year than it has been in the past (their RBs run the ball now).....still, he is the leader of that team and they keep winning....
--------------------
other possible QBs for the discussion (college QBs)
Doug Flutie Charlie Ward Vinny Testeverde Peyton Manning Michael Vick Ken Dorsey Matt Leinart Steve Young Danny Wuerffel Vince Young
All the other guys either didn't start enough years....weren't in the Nat'l Champ picture enough of those years....or just didn't put up the wins+numbers.
At this point, I think I would go as my top 5 college QBs of the past 30 years:
1. Tommie Frazier 2. Tim Tebow 3. Doug Flutie 4. Matt Leinart 5. Peyton Manning (toughest choice by far....almost put Michael Vick or Steve Young here....Manning gets it despite his inability to beat Florida and win a Nat'l Title)

Not trying to be smart but I really don't care much..why? Because a lot of those great college players don't translate into the NFL game..it's why I dispise the hype.
I liked Frazier..even though he played at Nebraska..a team I've never liked..must be cuze Oklahoma is in there..
Archie Griffin one of the greatest backs..got in the NFL and was average..couldn't do much.. I know all about the numbers but the extra hype Tebow gets is silly..
Everyone (well not everyone)thinks he'll blow up the NFL..and oh the Browns should draft him ..he'll play this position or that..screw that nonsense... He's not for the Browns..

I don't want the Browns to draft Tebow....nor do I think he'll make a great NFL QB....
but you stated he is NOT one of the greatest college QBs.....and that is not correct (by practically any measure).

staying in the national championship picture was big for me (as well as winning it)....starting more than 2 years....putting up big numbers....winning Heisman or at least being in the discussion.....comeback wins....
hard to say what Tebow hasn't done IMO (and I hate Florida)....but my opinion is out there and so is yours, so others can make up their own minds....

Lately, I've gotten so confused by hype that players get coming out of college. I look at a guy like Flacco for instance. I knew he existed when he came out, but I don't remember the Matt Leinart type hype.. Yet, look at the end result. Flacco is leading a winning program,, Leinart is riding the pine.
Alex Smith got a little time last week I guess,, But look at Rogers who was not thought nearly as much of, is leading the the Pack and is very exciting.
The ultimate has got to be a guy like Romo who isn't even drafted and look at his career so far,, ups and downs, but decent.
And then you have Tom Brady.. who'da thunk it...
So all this talk about Tebow not being able to translate to the Pro Game,, who the hell knows. The right coach, the right words, the right teammates,, who the hell knows.
Troy Smith,, maybe he's someone that could be a good fit.. maybe not. He didn't light it up in Baltimore enough to get them to pass on Flacco did he?
Is he the answer long or short term.. hell if I know.
I guess my point with all this is simple, you find talent where you find it and if developed right, nurtured right, surrounded by sound football players and a game plan that works with the skills they possess... anyone could be a winner.
Getting that right mix of players and thinking and coaching etc.. Now theres the trick. Ya just gotta look beyond the norm.
And one other thing., being too quick to judgement while a young guy and his teammates find thier way,, Just isn't the brightest way to go about things either.
I know it's an unpopular idea, hell, I don't really like it much myself, but perhaps it's time to just put Quinn in and let the chips fall where they may...
This is a lost year.. nothing much good can come out of this year except to find out what we have and what value they have going forward as either a member of this team, or in trade. No sense in playing with it anymore.
Just My "not so" humble opinion

You've got to be kidding me. I'm no Tebow fanboy. But he has the possibility of being on three national chmapionship teams (leading two of them.) And will be in contention for three Heisman trophies. No other player can say that.
Not only that, but he has more rushing TD's then anyone in SEC histoy.
Tebow is a top 5 college player of all time.
With that said, I want no business with him in the NFL. I am confident our coaching staff would screw him up.

You switch your QB pick faster than anyone I know.....and now you want Troy Smith?? Oye. I'm with you on the fact that I don't want to see us draft an early round pick for QB though, fix the team around that position first.

i had Leinart in my list as well....he had a phenomenal college career....sure, a lot of it may have had to do with one of the best supporting skill casts ever assembled, but as the QB he directed them.
don't let his NFL failures taint what he did in college.....

I think this definitely has to be a possibility at least. I don't know if we can bring in too many more QB's to go 2-17 with a pick.... Instead of just bashing Knight for being a blatant homer and OSU humper (whatever you kids are calling it these days) how about we investigate into how well/not well Troy has played, pull up a damn scouting report, and speculate on his future. Then we can come to a somewhat rational decision. Instead this turned into a Tebow thread. I could vomit. Anyway, in an attempt to resurrect the true purpose of the thread... http://www.rototimes.com/nfl/player.php?tqid=6565&type=news&nid=43423It was because of a tonsil infection. http://www.yardbarker.com/author/article_external/651242Interesting take on Smith. I think we should keep that in mind as well. The guy may be able to have multiple purposes on offense. But he is actually an accurate thrower underneath and on intermediate routes. Most scouting reports say adequate arm strength to go with that and he did display great leadership at tOSU. The guy's athleticism is still his best attribute. Potentially could develop into a great passer, it has to be seen still. Potentially he could be a Drew Brees (similarities between the two, really) but also could just be Andre Ware 2.0. It, too, will remain to be seen. But his positive collection of attributes gives him high potential. That's for certain. Negatives, though. I see some things are workable and some things that are not. First big negative: Height. He is 5'11" on a good day so he will struggle to find some throwing lanes and also get quite a few balls batted down at the line. In the passing game, does tend to stare down receivers, and he just doesn't seem to have too many of the amazing throws in the passing game you'd like to see against top notch competition. He seems to need everything going well around him. I still say give him a shot and hurt their cap for the future and try to steal him away and at least have a viable backup. I'm not saying he is going to be good and develop into more but it needs to be a possibility. The guy has an 87.2 career passer ratings with just 3 TDs to 0 INTs in 80 career pass attempts for 534 yards. It's a small sample size but he has shown promise and was scheduled to be their starting QB for the 3rd preseason game (telling factoid) before his tonsil infection. He has above average athleticism and is a good leader. He has more experience. If he has an okay team around him, who knows what happens? But if the supporting cast is shaky, ehhh.... so likely to be just as shaky is he. Whoever the next QB is.... their success is largely dependent on the supporting cast (Right side of OL, WR/TE corps., supporting ground game, and defensive improvement). That is what is most important. I like the guy's character. He's really a hell of a guy. It's worth it just trying lure him here for high back-up money and maybe hurt their space, some. Then we get a good backup and a potential starter for a 4th rounder. Whooptie do. It beats our past 4th rounder like Antonio Perkins, Isaac Sowels, ad nauseum. Take a bit of a chance because something good is happening either way. All we have to do is half-ass some paperwork and watch it all unfold. P.S. In one start against the Steelers, Troy smith went 16-27 for 171 yards and a touchdown with zero turnovers in his team's victory at the end of the 2008 season. He's the last Baltimore quarterback to beat the Steelers.

I wonder what Philly might want for him.

j/c....
Why are all you guys saying you don't want to draft a QB, and that you want a "proven NFL QB"?
Do you realize how rare it is for a proven NFL QB to hit the market?
Look at this list of possible free agents next year...
Jason Campbell- Probably the best option on the list. Is this guy really a "proven NFL QB" though?
Kyle Orton- Probably won't get to free agency. But if he does, I'd be okay with him for 1 year, while our 1st round QB sits and learns.
Chad Pennington- 33 years old and coming off yet ANOTHER surgery? No thanks.
Charlie Batch- Pass Kyle Boller- Pass David Carr- Pass Kellen Clemens- Pass Daunte Culpepper- Once a proven NFL QB. Not anymore Jeff Garcia- Been there done that. Rex Grossman- Pass Joey Harrington- Pass Tavaris Jackson- Pass Jon Kitna- Pass Matt Moore- I'd like the bring this kid in. I was big on him coming out of college. But, as a starting QB? Pass. Patrick Ramsey-Pass Troy Smith- Pass (I know, he played at Ohio State, but he's NOT a "proven NFL QB" like some of you guys like to think he is).
I'll take my chances on the draft again.

I don't want a 1st round QB for 2 reasons:
1. I'm not enamored wtih this class of QBs....too many questions about whether they are viable NFL QBs.
2. Look at the 1st round QB busts...and the biggest indicator of being a bust is having a team that is not ready to plug in a QB. Sure, there are the Peyton Mannings that ride out the storm, but that is the smallest of sample sizes.
For #2....if we drafted Sanchez....how good do you think he would look or would a majority of the posters here already be decrying him a wasted draft pick and a complete bust. He'd be in over his head, which is one of the many reasons I'm glad we have Mack, Elam, Coleman, MoMass and Davis.

I think it's depressing that we're actually discussing the possible merits of having a Troy Smith, Jason Campbell or Tim Tebow as our QB for next year.

True! Have we really sunk this low with our expectations? Could you imagine 15 -20 years ago thinking guys like a Bubby Brister, Gary Kubiak, Vince Evans, Eric Zier, etc. would be someone we should take a look at as an upgrade? Hell no because the people running the show knew how to evaluate talent, bring it here, and coach it. My god, I think Paul McDonald was a better QB than what we've seen in recent years!

Just look at the history of the Bengals and Lions (as well as our Tim Couch)......bad teams that draft qb's in the first round. Only one of these has been successful:
Chuck Long
Andre Ware
Joey Harrington
Jack Thompson
David Klingler
Akili Smith
Carson Palmer
Tim Couch
I don't see where Locker, Claussen, Bradford, Tebow, etc. would be a better NFL prospect than these guys were coming out of college.

Exactly!
this is why i proposed Smith, he has NFL Expereince, In limited playing time he showed promise. He is the last Ravens QB to Beat the Steelers throwing 1 TD no turnovers or INTS
Smith is known for not throwing dumb INT, he is also not a statue in the pocket, sure he is only 5"11, but his mobility and his wheels make up for that. Also, Smith is a "tall" 5"11 he don't get many passes batted down...
For a 4th rd pick, I feel we have to atleast sign the kid to an offer sheet, if the Ravens match we force them to overpay for a a kid behind Flacco, if they let him come to us, we get a potential starter and only give up a 4th rder...its a win win for us
then we can use our Draft picks and Fa on other areas of the team to strengthen the supporting cast
Troy Smith IMO is a very under-rated QB i said that the year he came out...he may not be Peyton Manning, but he sure as heck isn't Ryan Leaf either

I really think there is a bit too much homerism going on to be serious about Troy Smith.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

Troy Smith? No absolutely not. We would be better off signing Jason Campbell than Smith. He's small, inaccurate, and doesn't have much experience himself. No more stop gap players.
Tim Teabow? He was a great college player, and is a heck of a leader, but is an insanely mediocre thrower. The only reason this guy is great is because hes a fullback playing the Quarterback position and the team around him is insane. His TD numbers look great because his teams defense gets tons of turnovers, creating short fields, and there special teams sets them up with short fields constantly.
There have been dozens and dozens of great players in college football that have done nothing in the NFL.
No on Smith and No on Teabow.
