Marty Schottenheimer isn't interested in the Cleveland Browns' general manager vacancy.
The former Browns coach made that point abundantly clear during his NFL Sirius radio show.
“I don’t even see that kind of a role for me," Schottenheimer said today. "I’m not familiar enough with what they have in terms of their front office. Let somebody else do that. It’s really a very unusual circumstance and it’s going to take some dramatic measures in my mind to be able to get the thing headed in the right direction.
“The bottom line for them right now is they don’t have a real good football team. They’re not playing even to the level that the talent is expressed and it’s going to be a very, very difficult circumstance. The important thing in my view is very simply this: You cannot lose your football team. And dashing around doing all these things that are on the periphery don’t serve any useful purpose at this point in time. You want to resolve issues like this? Let the thing play out, gather information as you go."
After the dismissal of general manager George Kokinis, the Browns seem unlikely to hire a general manager immediately.
Yet, you never can tell what the Browns might do next when it comes to unpredictable owner Randy Lerner.
“We recognize the decision for them from the standpoint of a playoff berth is virtually impossible for them to achieve," Schottenheimer said. "You need to leave some sense of stability at least through this season because players that are there signed to long term contracts are thinking, ‘What in the world is going on here?’
"You worry about the reaction of your players and, believe me, let’s not make any mistake about this: That feeling that a player has about his organization is an integral part of their ability to perform at the highest level.”

I am afraid some of the big name people we have mentioned will also be scared off at how big of a task it is to rebuild this organization.

he certainly didn't pull any punches....
and I'm glad he is able to admit that he isn't the right person to come in here and fix the FO and GM positions.....he doesn't have that experience and we really need someone that does.

Well, just because people are big names doesn't mean they'd be any good. Would Marty have done well? Maybe, maybe not.
I'm not sure that people are going to *avoid* Cleveland, especially if the money and power are right.
Imagine giving a qualified person a huge salary and carte blanche to bring in a head coach, coaching staff, and front office that they want. I have to think there are very qualified people out there who would come here.
People might be "afraid" of Mangini, but if Lerner says "if you come here, you have the final decision over players AND ALL coaches", then there would be no reason to be "afraid."

Reading it again, I think he's saying that Lerner shouldn't just start firing people left and right.
He got rid of this Erin lady, and he got rid of Kokinis. Kokinis had the GM label, but who knows if he actually had GM powers. I think we all assume (I know I do) that Kokinis didn't have much to do with the standard GM stuff.
I think he's just saying that Lerner should stay the course this season. Let things play out a little bit and make the decisions after the season is over.

Marty might have said no but I think we could still land a big name candidate. These guys have huge egos. They have to in order to be succesfull in this field. If they are offered the right amount of money they will take the job.
Just imagine the guy that turns this thing around. He will be a hero in Cleveland for ever. Look at what happened to Holmgren in GB. They named streets after the guy.
A lot of these guys would relish the challenge. They are so cocky that in thier mind there is noway they can fail.

This doesn't suprise me in the least....
this orginization is a wreck..i have stated our front office was a wreck for quite sometime.
that being said, there is no sense arguing right and wrong ways to structure it because we have no structure...you have to atleast build something the wrong way before you correct it and this team hasn't even succeeded in building a wrong front office let alone a right one.
I personally think Lerner is a complete dolt..he doesn't know how to run a business, and he sure as all be don't know how to run a football team. If it wasn't for daddy Al Lerner(RIP) advisors watching over his money, this guy would be broke on the streets allready.
when Kokinis didn't even know Edwards was traded until he seen it on sportcenter, thats just a diaster.
I really do believe Lerner didn't even know or even look at what Kokinis job was, he just signed off on....I question if Lerner even cares....he hired Mangini and the opinion among league circles is Mangini is a running gag, Bellichik and Kraft can't stand Mangini, he burnt so many bridges with spygate...the guy is a gag..and Lerner fell for it.
I personally think our chances of getting a "true qualified" PROVEN NFL GM just isn't going to happen...no way a proven GM would come to this wreck..it would be career suicide.
Even though this is AGAINST EVERY grain of my thinking for the last 15 years....if Lerner has ANY brains whatsoever then what he needs to do is this:"
Accorsi isn't coming
neither is any other top flight GM
Lerner just needs to hand Mike Holmgren the Coach and GM responsibilities..let Holmgren draft and sign who he wants..the guy is a proven winner...either him or Cowher will bring in their own personell guy
no way a GM with any credibility at all will come here to this diaster that is our franchise...not in this mess
Holmgren is our best shot...the Packers were just as bad as we were back when he came in and he fixed them....Holmgren would be the only one I think would be able to fix this thing...yes I would have more faith in holmgren to fix this mess then Cowher and thats saying something...

Along those lines, too, some of these guys who were successful coaches might be looking to add to their "legacy."
A coach will probably only win, what, 2 or 3 Super Bowls in their career? But a good GM can build a dynamic force that lasts well beyond their career, IMO.
Probably just homerism from me, but I agree that we could still land a big name.
In the end, though, I don't care if it's a big name guy or a guy we've never heard of. I just want to win.

no sir...
I'm really thinking that we're going to have to go the route of the Lions and the Rams and hire a coordinator. Well...perhaps going the way of KC might be better...Hire a strong GM, or football personnel person (first) and have him bring in the coach he wants.
Too bad we didnt grab Pioli. That non-hire is beginning to look like a mistake. Not that KC has been better than us, but their power structure looks sound and unless Haley turns out to be a bum coach, theyre at least headed in the right direction (minus LJ of course).
but...our next move is going to be to hire a guy like Bill Parcells to man all our football operations, and do it smartly. Kosar? Ditka? Bueller?
I dont know who that man is...
but the more i hear and the more i think...its going to take a well respected man to be hired (for a lot of money) that is going to have to come in and be president and CEO of football operations. then, he needs to clear out all the useless riff raff that our organization has. people like Mangini, Erin O'Brien (yea shes gone but anyone like her), Kokinis and any useless person on staff...gone.
Then...we need to hire the right people. a marketing executive, and most importantly a PR executive. We need to get positive press coming out of Cleveland.
Then we can hire a GM...then our new GM can hire a coach.
And preferably...this should happen before March.
but what Lerner needs to do. is due dilligence. Not one single person should be hired without copious amounts of homework and even more copious amounts of interviews are done.
no stone can be left unturned in our search to find the right man.
the more you interview...the more you learn about what needs to be done correctly. the more points of view...the better. This one has to be done the right way, or we'll be talking restructuring again before December.
our organization needs to be restructured...top to bottom.

Lerner's goal is to eventually NOT be involved. He's just now realizing that he needs to have that authority figure in place that takes charge of the organization and lets him just sit back and enjoy.
This statement from Marty makes me bummed. I could have sworn I heard he wanted to get involved w/ an organization in the front office not too long ago.
Oh well, I don't need Marty's comments to know we have a train wreck on our hands . . .

I'd have to think that a FO and coach would have to be in place well before March (to deal with FA and the draft in a proper way).
But that doesn't mean Lerner couldn't start doing that homework right now.

Marty is just telling the truth.........we are in a mess. He understands that he isn't qualified to clean up a mess of this magnitude, and somebody that has had FO experience needs to be brought in.
Acorsi would be my 1st choice, but it appears he enjoys golf and fishing now, and I can't say as I blame him. My next choice would be Holmgren and there are several reasons why............
1. He has FO experience. I know people will say he lost the GM part of the gig, and they are correct. However, when he was the GM he brought in the core of what turned out to be a SB team. He simply couldn't do it all and concentrate on coaching so they brought in help. To me this isn't a knock against him at all, becuase he drafted/signed most of those guys when he was GM/HC, and the new guy didn't have to clean up a mess.
2. He would install a program with a definite philosophy. Everyone that was hired would have the same philosophy. That is huge to have a program where everybody involved sees everything regarding the same type of system.......the WCO.
3. He would lend instant credibility to an organization that sorely needs it. Let's be honest folks we are on the verge of being the 90's Bungels where FAs avoid without grossly overpaying them. Holmgren would give us credibility again, and that would be huge.
What I am afraid of happening would be to hire another guy with no GM experience and hope he's the next wonder kid. I really hope Lerner takes a serious look at Holmgren
Against logic, the most effective armor is willful ignorance.

if it didnt happen before march...i might be ok with it, if it involved us getting it done correctly. better too late, than rushing it and getting it wrong. See this year

I really think its funny how people make a point to turn down job offers before they are even asked to come in for an interview lol.
So Megan Fox no i dont want to be your sex slave so try to control yourself. I am sure if you look really hard you will find someone.
Marty has never shown the ability to evaluate talent. He was great at maximizing potential and building a "TEAM" concept.

Ding, ding! We have a winner. Thanks for playing.

I don't understand the Hate for Erin O'Brien?
All she did was make travel arrangements, and reports were very "vague" as to why she was let go. some reports stated that Erin O'Brien actually quit for personal reasons.
Maybe Erin O'Brien was being sexually harassed by someone in the building, and she resigned in return for severance package not filing a lawsuit and giving the organization a black eye? This happens EVERY DAY
the above "IS" a possible scenario...i see all these people making judgements with rumor mill to back them up, and painting this woman to be a witch to the world.
women have been traditionally not been valued the same as men in the work place.
this could infact be a real possibility
Im not saying Erin O'Brien was sexually harassed, but she "could" have been and I find it unfair to paint such a picture of her when all the facts haven't been released.
As for Kokinis, I feel bad for the guy...Koke was set up to fail here...he was given a Gm Title with no real power, as a puppet, and Lerner did nothing to ensure Koke was put into a position to ensure he would do his job.
Lerner should have sat down the day Koke was hired and flatly told Mangini KOKE HAS FINAL SAY ON ALL ROSTER AND PERSONEL MOVES
Randy Lerner is the reason Koke failed in my opinion because the boundaries were not properly drawn.
you cna't tell me that Ozzie Newsome raved about Koke, Koke had zero problems in all his years in Baltimore and worked very well under Ozzie Newsome for him to be the dolt people are making him out to be.
A GM such as Ozzie is only as good as the people who work for him...that lends credence to believe koke was pretty darn good at his job.
something stinks here, and the odor is coming from Jr.

Oh dear Heavens........now we have to deal with crap like this? People saying she was let go because she was sexually harrassed?
There's a reason many don't go in for the "sexual harrassment" thing........because anytime a woman is let go it get's brought up. Same thing with race.........anytime something bad happens to anyone other than a white male, it's racism or sexism.

For every possible candidate with this opinion there's one salivating over what he can do with 11 picks in a draft.
There'll be some creditable guys wanting the job, it's if Lerner and his confidants think they're the one.

This is why players leave the Browns and go onto to success elsewhere ... culture. It's also why we are only a couple of playmakers away on both sides of the ball from being a really good football team. The talent isn't the best ... but it's not as bad as what's being displayed on the field. Of course, it would be nice to have even below average QB play from time to time. I think what we've seen from the QB's is in a category all by itself.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Agree....but checking in once a year or only when fans are at the point of staging protests is not good business either, even if he hires a President. The President should be making sure all facets of the organization - coaching, scouting, personnel, financials - are working together and having constructive conflict but that doesn't mean once Lerner hires this guy, he disappears for another year.

I'm not talking about the reason she was let go...but more like why she was hired.
She was a babysitter or something? maybe she was qualified, but in all actuality...was she qualified, or was she just given a menial job that may not have been necessary because she knew someone and they wanted to get her a job or something.
When the new regime is hired...every single person hired needs to be qualified and professionally hired for professional reasons. cut the riff raff and eliminate unnecessary jobs and streamline.

Bill Parcells is the only person who can right this ship! Look what he has done with the Dolphins in just two seasons.
Hire Parcells. Let him pick the GM and the HC and we will be on our way to greener pastures. Super Bowls? debatable. Respectability? MOST DEFINATELY!!

No one in their right mind would take the Cleveland gig. The fanbase demands continuous change.
RAC wasn't half bad. He fielded competitive teams, had us within a game of the playoffs--then the next year, after we find ourselves down to our 4th string QB--we fire him for not getting us to the playoffs.
That was a dumb move.
No one will admit it.
But it was stupid.
We would be in a much better postion right now had we kept Savage and RAC around. But Clevelanders demanded change----much like they are doing right now, and Lerner always seems to cave to this fanbases ludicrous demands.
As long as Junior gives in to the demands of this fanbase--we will never get anywhere.
I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch......

That's the problem. Your best shot with someone that has this attitude is going to be an unproven person, willing to take on that risk.
The Browns have a proven track record in ruining careers, why would anyone such as Parcells want to come here?
I'd love it for someone like Parcells or others to come here, but it's very unlikely.
We need a president (A FOOTBALL PRESIDENT) to make these decisions, not Lerner.
Just looking at the Front Office, it seems like a bunch of them are Ex-Jets also.
Does anyone have a list of Front Office personnel, Coaching Staff and Players that were all Ex-Jets under Mangini.
That seems to be the problem, Mangini has too much power, especially when he hasn't done anything to command that power. He wasn't great at the Jets, decent, perhaps, but it's not like he was moving the Patriot's franchise.

Also,
Just looking over the Front Office personnel, especially the Scouting/Player Personnel, it seems that none of them are even impressive.
Steve Sabo is our Senior Director of Pro Personnel, and have been with the Browns for 10 Years, and spent a few years with the Saints before then during their horrendous years.
Why do we keep guys around and promote them when it's hard to see what they have done productively?
I'm not amazed with the talent that was managed to be brought in over the past 10 Years.

Well, I can't speak for Sabo at all really, but we've been told a number of times that the scouts have pushed for one guy and the various GM's and HC's we've had have taken someone else..
the consensus was that Richard Seymore was the guy the scouts wanted, Butch took Big Money instead... that's just one example.
you can't just blame the scouts for bad picks.. they don't make the decisions, they merely make the recommendations. If they make recommendation and the GM doesn't take it,, then it's hard to find fault with the scouts...

You are right about that, but then what's the point of having scouts if a GM isn't going to take their picks?
Sounds counter productive to me, IMO.

I am afraid some of the big name people we have mentioned will also be scared off at how big of a task it is to rebuild this organization.
If thats the case than we dont want them, and thier doing the right thing by turning it down. We dont need a wanna be we need somebody who really wants to turn things around in Cleveland, somebody who isnt afraid of this job.
We need
1. Strong football mind 2. Communicator with players & Fans 3. Excellent talent evaluator
Heck is Mel kiper our next head coach

Yup,, I agree, It is counter productive.. but my point was that you can't blame the scouts for merely recommending a player.. and that's what your post was doing IMO..
