Strange as it may seem we agree and disagree on several points. Do we have "our" QB on the roster right now? Probably not. DA is almost sure to get released at the end of the season. His salary is way too high next year (with bonuses, and base salary) to warrant keeping a guy that is, at best a backup that may win a game or two for you if called upon. Quinn has a 50/50 chance of being on the roster next year. But only because I don't see who they'd replace him with. I also think that in the right circumstances he could be a good, not great, QB. I just doubt that it will be here. As far as Winslow and Edwards go.....well, Mangenius has to take the hit on those trades. He should have been able to work with both guys. This "cancer in the locker room" crap is just that....crap. Plenty of guys have a big ego in the NFL. If you traded them all you'd have...what? the Arena League? He got nothing valuable for Winslow. A guy with hands of glue that would have been invaluable for either QB. Until they found out that Moore could actually catch our TEs looked like someone bandaged both hands before every game. Pathetic to watch. Edwards......His ego far outsizes his ability. But he did one thing well. He frightened opposing Defensive coordinators enough that they paid more attention to him than he actually deserved which allowed other guys to get open. If we'd had both these guys all season and had Manknucklehead stuck to one QB in the preseason and gotten that guy some valuable playing time instead of playing games with the other teams and the media I have no doubt it would have resulted in at least 3 more wins this year. Which may be the difference, for Mangini, in getting canned or actually becoming the coach he thinks he is.

Winslow demanded a new contract. He got it. The highest dollar contract ever for TE. Think he would have lowered his demands here? Think he might have held out?
By the way ..... how is Tampa Bay doing with him in their lineup ....?
Would he have made a difference here in wins/losses? How about if he'd held out? Impossible you say? Who is Winslow's agent? What is his track record for holdouts?
Edwards will be a free agent at the end of this season ..... either restricted or unrestricted depending upon the CBA developments. Is he a guy you re-sign at all costs? I don't think so.
By the way .... how many games have the Jets won with Edwards? How many games have the Browns won without him? I didn't look it up .... but it seems to me that it's 3 for the Jets and 2 for the Browns. Would he have made a difference here? Would his hands have suddenly become an asset? It hasn't happened (now) for 3 different coaching staffs. Why would he suddenly become proficient catching the ball with his hands?

sorry Otto this season had nothing to do with the lack of KW2 and BE...well I think BE has pretty much proved as much as he was a cancer.
But KW2 also required a separate set of rules just for him. He hadn't practiced much after the season would get on track to be able to dress and play on the weekends.
His smarts wasn't that of a player to cram the game plan in the classrooms and be prepared.
Did we lack a pass catching TE...most definitely and nowadays that is not that hard to get. After all we picked one up that seems to be able to fill the void and it cost us NOTHING. No I'm not saying Moore is just as talented as KW2...I'm saying he's definitely smarter. He has a basketball background which helps in him using his body. He runs good routes and has just as good hands from what I can see than any TE out there to do the job. And although not known for his blocking seems to be willing to sacrifice and I've seen 2 good blocks made by him already for TDs - that btw is two more than KW2 made since 04.
Run Mangini out of town if you must...although he still has life here???
But don't begrudge the good that he actually has done for the organization. He has tried to create a character for the team. One of Smart, Tough, Football players and we can see some of that character now in December. We have beaten the Steelers before but not for 7 years. And we never BEAT THEM PHYSICALLY. We for the first time since 1999 beat up the Steelers physically from start to finish. We ran for more than 180 yards on the NFL best run D.
We handed them a butt whipping. One Game? sure but it woke up a lot of Dawgs on the character that he is building here and how in a long term it actually makes sense. KW2 cause the longer he stayed here without becoming the HIGHEST PAID TE IN THE NFL - he would be bitter. It was a great move. Yeah Royal sucks, I agree doesn't make KW2 good for the team. We pulled a kid out of football that looks to be able to fill the void...gee that was a hard call.
And BE...his contract was up and his play of 09 wasn't going to garnish any rewards in our tag options. So we took what we got for a player already being a cancer in the locker room. And his presence in NY has simply catapulted that offense to the top...
Your suggestion that he ruined the team by trading both players...when in actuality both moves made it possible to BUILD A TEAM...a real one.

I agree with Otto. With Winslow and Edwards, we may have beaten Cinci twice, the Lions, and maybe even the Chargers - we lost those 4 games by a total of 20 points. Add KW's 5 TDs and BE's 2 TDs, take away a buttload of drops by our TEs and you could conceivably be looking at a 6-8 or even 7-7 record right now. All conjecture, I admit, but when you took away those two threats to a defense (KW & BE) you changed the whole dynamic of defensive schemes we would face this season.

I wish we still had KW2. I understand the reasoning behind the trade, but still....
Braylon? Not a moment's regret that we ditched his arse.

Why would you worry about money? It's not coming out of your pocket. We have some of the lowest ticket prices in the NFL. And we're also always under the cap. A cap, by the way, that may not be there in 2 years.

Yes, one guy always turns a team around so Winslow must be the reason they suck. /sarcasm off

Really irrelevant as far as this argument goes. If you read my first post you'll see I mentioned what I thought would have happened had we had both KW2 and BE this year. You may have noticed that I said his ability is outsized by his ego.
I don't love either guy. But to say we wouldn't have been better with both in the lineup is just wrong. Period.

We had both in the lineup last year.
You make good arguments most of the time ... I think this one is pretty flimsy.

In terms of wins and losses, we wouldn't be better with both of them. We would be better skill-wise, but it wouldn't matter. Just like it didn't matter in years past sans 2007. Isn't wins and losses what really matter?
There was NO other option but to trade either guy. It's almost not even debateable.
Mangini deserves criticism for some things ... this is definitely not one of them. Actually, he should deserve some praise for both moves.

as Branch Rickey said to Ralph Kiner: " We could have finished last without you"
Just insert the name of BE and/ or KW2.
and the Bucs are going to finish last WITH KW2 and pay him dearly for the priviledge. How are the Jets doing with BE and........
is Mark Pick-chez, who Mangini passed over, setting the world on fire???

I'll say it: We will be a better team without winslow and edwards.
Yup, you heard it here - we will be, and probably ARE, a better TEAM without 2 of the most egomaniac players in the nfl.

Apparently the great and powerful Oz has spoken......
Look, I get it that some of you think that every player we have should be Joe Thomas-like and never say a word and spend all his off-time fishing.
But in the real world guys like Joe need guys like Kellen and Braylon. If they want to win. Which I assume you do. If you want a team of choir boys then I'm afraid we're in for a lot of 4-12, 5-11 seasons in the years to come.
And if you think we're better off, talent-wise, without Winslow and Edwards then I thank God that none of you are our new GM.

it isn't about this year, it's about next year and beyond. Those two would not have been back. Can you really say with a straight face that we would have gotten to the play-offs this year with BE and KW2? How are things going in Tampa? Are the Jets going to the playoffs, if so is it b/c of BE?

I wish we had a healthy Winslow. His knees are destroyed. He's approaching the part of his career where his body can't cash the checks his heart is writing. The injury was dumb and self-inflicted. Still, a team can work with a prima dona of Winslow's type.
Edwards? He has all the physical tools but just doesn't really want it bad enough. We are better off without him.
I understand the rationale behind moving both of them while we could. Winslow, you have to get value before he starts what could be a rapid decline. Edwards, why pay a guy buckets of money to drop the ball when we have plenty of guys who can do that?
I can question some of the decisions the Team has made this year but those two aren't among them.

I'd rather have 1or2 more years of KW production than a Veikune career....end of discussion. It's a waste if you don't get similar production for your team back...whatever the compensation (and we sold low, especially on BE)

The WR situation is what it is b/c: 1. Stallworth got suspended for the year. 2. Edwards was leaving,so he was traded to at least get something in return. 3. there was no viable FA out there that would be a magic pill
None of this is on Mangini.
Yes ,he can be blamed for not upgrading the recieving unit when he knew what he was going to do.
U trade K2 immediately, yet you FAIL TO GET a suitable TE to come in ..Royal is worthless as Stallworthless was when Opie signed him..
Next EM knew he wanted to trade Edwards..yet he failed to get a better upgrade to replace him..and he had the draft to do it..how many times must I say you don't draft # 2 recievers/slot recievers when you're trying to unload your # 1 guy? Sorry Eo that unit must be upgraded in the offseason, the Browns need a # 1 wideout. The new TE's are o.k to me..Gaines and Moore..and keep Greg Estandia..

Before I say this, this isn't a criticism directed at you, jeepnstein. It's in general. Quote:

I've heard this a few times, I just don't understand its justification, though. I've not seen anything about Kellen Winslow's knees being that bad. There's just no evidence for it; he has played every single game with Tampa Bay this season. He has 72 receptions, 828 yards, 5 TDs and logged 2+ receptions in every one of them. He's only 26 and is having his third best season since he arrived in the league (arguably, it could be his second best after next week's game).
I understand that he had an attitude problem, but to attack his physical conditioning is not basing that opinion off of the reality (being the results of his play).
I was quite satisfied with trading Braylon, but I honestly wish we would have kept Winslow.

You know I hate those things ... the ROFL ... quit giving them to me. Besides, I think you are missing the point of what I'm saying. Do we currently have more talented pass catchers on this team right now then Winslow and Edwards? No. Would it have made a difference if they were on the team with that added skill? History tells us No. The present tells us No. So I ask you ... what about these guys makes you think we should have kept them and PAID them? You seem to be forgetting that they were both expecting to get paid. I will agree with you that ultimately we will need talent to win games and that we need a coaching staff that can handle a difficult player or two ... for Winslow and Edwards it was just wrong time, wrong place. They wouldn't have made much of a difference now, if at all, and they weren't deserving to get paid for that.

Hey, they don't have a chuckling smiley or I'd have used that. I found your comment funny, especially the with the tone of finality that it exuded. Let me say this for all the other posters that keep throwing Tampa Bay's record in my face.....It's irrelevant. Tampa sucks as bad or worse than we do and there is no way to know how much effect KW2 has had on the team, good or bad. By using the logic of all those that think insinuating Winslow is the main cog in Tampa's demise then, apparently, I'm to assume that when the Jets make the playoffs next week (as they probably will) Braylon deserves all the credit for throwing them over the top? Uh huh...... My point has always been that predicated on a couple of basic facts that cannot be denied: We had more talent when those 2 were on the team and we either didn't get enough in return or we botched the draft picks we did get. And for that Mangini and only Mangini is responsible. Of course, the reverse is also true. If it turns out that EM leads us out of the wilderness and into the promised land (playoffs, Super Bowl) then he gets the lion's share of the credit as well. Fair is fair. Let's just say that with the team on it's current course, with Eric at the helm, I'm not worried about saving up for Super Bowl tickets. Lastly, I ask why are you worried about paying these guys? Or any other players for that matter? It's not coming out of your pocket. We're almost always under the cap now and I trust Holmgren's abilities to be able to decide who to pay and who to jettison. Based on his performance so far can you really say the same about Mangini? With a straight face, that is......

Who to "jettison"?
That's either some seriously funny unintended freudian slip or a well played joke. I'll go with the latter without knowing for sure.
Can we "jettison" Mangini?

Yes we were more talented with these 2. IMO, the bigger question is are these two players worth the roughly 10% of our cap room that they commanded at the end of last year? B/c of the salary cap, its not always about just the talent, but what you are paying for that talent.
http://www.sportscity.com/NFL/Cleveland-Browns-Salaries
As far as Winslow, he had the second highest cap number for a TE in 2008 other than Tony Gonzalez http://www.theredzone.org/2008/salaries/showposition.asp?Order=CapValue&position=WR. He also wanted a longer, new deal for more money. I don't think it would've been smart for the Browns to do this and tie up cap room especially after he has had at least six knee surgeries leaving his long term future in doubt.
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2009/02/cleveland_browns_trade_kellen.html
Edwards' cap value (2008) was higher than Larry Fitzgerald, Hines Ward, Reggie Wayne, Chad Johnson, and Randy Moss to name a few. He is simply not nearly as good as any of these receivers and is not even statistically in the top 40 this year for receiving. http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player/_/stat/receiving
We don't know if we botched the draft picks we got for these two yet b/c the picks we received for Edwards are for the 2010 draft, as is one of the picks from the Winslow trade. We took Massaquoi with the other pick we received for Winslow, not a terrible pick. What we really got in return was freed up salary cap room to sign picks/FA in the future.
Thus, IMO, Edwards was not nearly worth his cap number, and Winslow was not worth the risk of a long term deal, so trading both made sense from a salary cap standpoint.

Are we a more talented team with Winslow and Edwards? Yes.
Are we a better team with those two on this squad? Debatable, but hardly several wins better. God knows we aren't any better in the locker-room.
Are we a better team in the future with the idiotic money Winslow got? Hell no we're not. How about with another year of Edwards sitting there in limbo, not good enough to get a new contract, and based on what he's been in NY, he wouldn't even net us what we got for him (which shoots down any belief that we "sold low" on Edwards. Sorry Django, old buddy, hehe). In an ideal situation he's been every bit as iffy as he has been here, and nobody would trade anything of value for a guy like him in his final year of Restriction.
We weren't going to win 8 games with those two on this squad. We'd have a crappier locker-room, and be in a much worse cap situation.
We're less talented with those two guys gone, but we're a better organization for it, and that's the bottom line if having or not having those two isn't the difference between us and the Super Bowl.

"Why would you worry about money?"
Cause it sets a precedent for all agents who will negotiate with our FO on contracts...thats why you worry about it.
"Yes, one guy always turns a team around so Winslow must be the reason they suck."
And yet he would be the reason for us NOT SUCKING???
" But to say we wouldn't have been better with both in the lineup is just wrong. Period."
"PERIOD"??? as in none debatable....why do posters claim I'm arrogant, rarely do I claim my opinion as fact...Period.
Yeah with the QB that we had been getting for most the year (it has gotten a little better since the return of BQ) both of those with UPSTANDING character would have had us playing better...both would have been a Cancer to the discipline being brought to this team. Both would have had this team in chaos instead of a group of Brotherhood that they seem to be now and Winning.
You got to remember we are talking REAL FOOTBALL not some cold statistical game like Strat-O-Matic where its based a pre assessment of talent.
If you are trying to state we would have been more talented...your statement would be true. If you are claiming the TEAM WOULD HAVE been better off with them than without them? I don't think its one way or another PERIOD...but I can see it being more good than bad. I don't think their combined talent was enough to make those losses into wins. And once the losing was there I don't see either as a leader to keep the team fighting.

j/c though titled quinn to ir, i'm treating it as a normal qb thread. as such: Quote:
Ravens quarterback Troy Smith seems like a thoughtful, talented young player that could have a long career in the NFL. But he could work on his timing.
Earlier this month, Smith gained attention for his dance steps after his touchdown gave the Ravens a 48-3 lead over Detroit.
Now his agent Ralph Cindrich is making it known through his Twitter account that Smith has notified the Ravens that he wants a trade, just six days before the Ravens try to clinch a playoff spot.
"Ravens QB Troy Smith, Ohio State alum, native + Heisman winner wants playing time. Ravens notified. Will seek trade after play offs, SB run," Cindrich writes.
Smith has shown promise when given the chance to play and was likely to open the 2008 as the Ravens starter over Joe Flacco if not for being sidelined by a rare form of tonsillitis.
It's unclear what kind of market Smith would generate and if the Ravens would be motivated to trade a backup quarterback they trust.

It would be nice to see what he could do, but I can't imagine the Ravens trading him within the division to the Browns. Maybe it has happened before, but I can't remember an instance of a trade within a division.

Again, I say why would any fan worry about money? The team isn't gonna bankrupt itself while doing contracts. Most of these guys in the FO appear to know what they are doing so I trust them to handle the cap so that we can sign who we need to sign and stay under the cap. Plenty of teams figure this stuff out. I figure the Browns could do it, too.
As far as the Browns not sucking......Just exactly where did I say that? Can't find it can ya. Nope, because what I said was we'd be a better team with them than without them. Which most people would agree with. Hell, the Browns have sucked for 20 years, give or take, so why would anyone think they wouldn't? At least until it happens for more than 1 year in a row.
We can argue about this until one of us is blue in the face. But there is no way to "prove" who is right or wrong in this instance. Unless, of course, Mr Peabody still has that Wayback Machine fired up.
Held - I'd like to say that I thought up the jettison "pun" before I wrote it. Sadly, I'm not that witty. But I'm more than willing to claim full credit for it's "punniness" now......

I don't know I think we leave it up to an impartial arbitrator...hmmm I vote for Toad...lol
but there is no way you can convince me that our results would have been better and the team better if we had both. You've been reading and listening to too many bozo's from the media...that is something straight from Bluto's mouth...Duke exactly what he would say...and he knows squat what's going on here or what was up with KW2.
but guess what - the reality is he's gone. What would be nice is if this kid Evan Moore ends up having a more successful longer career than KW2
