Thanks for posting that.

I've trying to decide if I wanted to try and scan-then-copy-paste that article from the magazine. You just saved me from having to do all that work.

If that doesn't change a few minds about Marty, nothing will.

i was thinking the same thing because it really sounds like mangini fits this article too. randy lerner also mentioned similar data (previous head coach, etc).

There was news that TH had been named GM...I found it on a Philadelphia news site...but it was debunked almost as soon as it was posted.

I would think it would be since he's not even allowed to be hired until Philly is out of it.

Well, maybe he wasn't "named" GM, but it was something stating that he would be. Regardless, it wasn't true.

It's Florio but:

Heckert expected to join the Browns soon
Posted by Mike Florio on January 8, 2010 4:44 PM ET
In a move that won't surprise many, Eagles G.M. Tom Heckert is expected to soon join the Browns in the same role. Per multiple reports, Heckert interviewed for the job earlier this week.

The move, on the surface, is a bit surprising. Since Holmgren has final say in Cleveland, final say can't be given to Heckert, and thus the Eagles can block the move.

But the Eagles are willing to let Heckert walk. By all appearances, they'd let Heckert leave even before the team's season ends, assuming the Eagles beat the Cowboys on Saturday night.

Making the stance less curious is the reality that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie recommended Heckert to the Falcons two years ago for the G.M. job.

Last year, Heckert was a candidate to be hired by the Browns for the same position. The thinking was that he'd get the job as part of a package deal including then-Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo as head coach.

Though the Heckert has never been on the hot seat in Philly, there's a perception that the team has a few too many chefs, given the ascension of Howie Roseman to the position of V.P. of player personnel, which caused many to believe that Roseman is the true No. 2 behind coach Andy Reid. So it makes sense for the Eagles to thin out the front office a bit, which explains why Lurie recommended Heckert to the Falcons in 2008.

Agreed.

I considered Savage, Pioli and Heckert as 1, 1a and 1b (in no particular order) back in '05.

Reid and Mangini both believe in trading down...it seems like this could work.

I think Mangini is a WCO guy too, it's just no one realizes it without a good QB.

Let's not forget the guy he tried to bring from NYJ to be our OC last year. I think Mangini is VERY MUCH opened to the idea of running the WCO this year even without Holmgren.

Chefs? Send some to KC. Between Weis and Crennel they'll need more chefs over there.

Anyone remember the Snickers commercial where they guy is painting a Chiefs endzone but left out the "I"?

Also, if we get the Heckert/Mornhinwheg combo does that come with a side of Kevin Kolb? Holmgren does like to trade for his QB's.

cfrs...I was thinking about Kevin Kolb, too.

McNabb just turned 33 last Nov 25 and is having one of his best years. He is not showing any signs of slowing down, other than not running as much. How much longer he can play at such a high level?...who knows...look at Favre.

Kolb is finishing his 3rd season with the Eagles and will be entering the last year of a 4 yr contract. He has learned the WCO from one of Holmgren's disciples, Andy Reid. If anyone would know whether the Eagles might be willing to trade Kolb, it would be Heckert.

The Browns do have some players that the Eagles might be interested in...Rogers, Cribbs.

Just brain storming...

The smarter move would be to trade McNabb if Kolb is ready.

I would take either of them.

Heckert likely to be named Browns’ new GM

Posted: January 8th, 2010 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Cleveland Browns, Tom Heckert, Will Lewis

Tom Heckert is likely to be named the Cleveland Browns’ new general manager, league sources have told NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi. An announcement is expected Monday.

In addition, a role that is yet to be determined may be in place for current Seattle Seahawks director of pro personnel Will Lewis, who was interviewed by Browns team president Mike Holmgren on Friday.

Heckert has served as the general manager of the Eagles since 2006.

Lewis joined the Seahawks’ football operations staff as the team’s director of pro personnel in 1999, following three years with the Green Bay Packers’ scouting department.

No way somebody cant feel great about this FO being assembled.

Question, what has he done in Philly? Seriously, not trying to be negative here. Reid has (and has always had) final say on roster. Reid supposedly was personally working the phones in last years draft. And that Roseman guy supposedly rose through the ranks and sort of usurped a lot of his duties. And the owner is practically pimping the guy out, actually recommending him for the Falcons GM gig last year. What gives? If he's so coveted and such a great GM candidate why are the Eagles so fond to see him go?

No one can seem to point to anything that he's actually done. I don't think you can look at the Eagles drafts and quantify his input. It would seem he didn't have a ton to do with FA acquisition either. At least it was by committee as much as the draft process was. Am I missing something?

Eagles' Heckert likely to be named Browns next general manager
NFL.com Wire Reports

His coach locked in place, new Browns president Mike Holmgren continued his search for a general manager on Friday. And it looks like there is a favorite for the job.

Philadelphia Eagles GM Tom Heckert is likely to be named the Cleveland Browns’ new GM, league sources have told NFL Network's Michael Lombardi. An announcement is expected Monday.

Heckert, who has served as the GM of the Eagles since 2006, interviewed with Holmgren on Wednesday.

The Browns, who have not had a GM since George Kokinis was fired in November, will not conduct any interviews over the weekend, spokesman Neal Gulkis said.

Heckert, whose father, Tom, worked as a scout for the Browns in the 1980s, could be hired once the Eagles complete their season. They play the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC playoffs on Saturday. Heckert reportedly was going to interview for Seattle's GM job this week but backed out.

Holmgren also interviewed Seattle pro personnel director Will Lewis on Friday. Holmgren has hinted that Cleveland's hierarchy could be revamped, and Lombardi reports the Browns may have a role that is yet to be determined in place for Lewis.

Through a team spokesman, Holmgren reported the meeting with Lewis "went very well." Holmgren, who took over Cleveland's football operations earlier this week, previously worked with Lewis in Green Bay and Seattle. After his playing career ended, Lewis worked as a scout with the Packers before he was added by Holmgren to the Seahawks' pro personnel department.

So, it's possible both Lewis and Heckert could wind up in Cleveland's front office.

Heckert was cleared to interview with the Browns last year but turned down the opportunity when the team's focus shifted to Kokinis.

Holmgren decided on Thursday to retain coach Eric Mangini, who went 5-11 in his first season with the Browns.

"We talked about change and some of that is just restructuring," he said. "Sometimes you have five people changing the light bulb. We're going to look at everything and try and streamline things, get good people to do it and work hard."

So, what happened to Heckert not wanting to come here because of Mangini? I guess that's another myth debunked if he actually comes on board...

Holmgren happened and I'm sure Mangini, while still here, is a on a short leash. In a battle of pull with the big guy, Heckert is already quite a few rungs up the ladder from Mangini. I think he's going to have to find a way to work with Heckert (if he comes here) and get Heckert to enjoy it.
