No one would really take a rapper seriously if their stage name was Calvin Broadus, Curtis Jackson, Trevor Smith, or Christopher Wallace

Why? Is image more important than talent and/or ability?

That sure seems to be the case from this vantage point.

I hear a lot of rap when I go out and think that most of it is crap. So much is like a kindergarten rhyme with a bunch of swearing and sexual references mixed in.

Where's Bob Dylan? He wrote the first rap ever and he could rhyme anything without using bad english.

Through highschool and most of college, I my CD collection was probably 97% rap. I've diversified my portfolio since, so to speak. But I still listen to a good amount.

Back then I lived at home, and spent tons of money on CDs. I'd buy pretty much anything. Some good and some bad. I knew a lot more of it then compared to now, because I don't really buy much of anything. I just download a song here or there, otherwise I just put on some Sirius/XM and play whatever.

I listen to a lot of types of music, basically whatever catches my ear. I'd have to say as a whole, there's not a much rap that catches my ear now compared to back in the day. There's still good music out there, but I enjoyed a lot more of it back in the 90's. From about '92-'97, I think was the best time for hip-hop/rap.

My favorite artist to this day is Tupac Shakur. Just loved his style, his energy and his passion that came off in his music.

Somebody mentioned Scarface..... classic. He should be up on that list. I know it's hard to get a large list together, you're bound to miss someone or something on a big poll.

Andre 3000's real name is Andre.

Beyonce's (IDK if she really counts in this) real name is Beyonce.

Eminem goes by his real name, Marshall Mathers, as well.

Eve's real name is Eve.

Fat Joe's real name is Joe.

Kanye West's real name is Kanye West

Lil' Wayne's real name is DeWayne.

Lil' Troy's real name is Troy.

Nate Dogg's real name is Nate.

R Kelly's real name is Robert Kelly.

Slick Rick's real name is Ricky.

Tupac's real name is Tupac.

Warren G's real name is Warren Giffin

Wyclef's real name is Nelust Wyclef Jean

So there's a lot of rappers that either use their name, or use their name as part of their name.

HMMM I did not know that, I thought she was a sanger. Got me there.

As far as Will Smith, thats a bit of a stretch since he was the Fresh Prince. I guess his later music came out as Will Smith though.

I still think the point has been made, that rappers that use their whole birth given name is few and far between.

2 Pac and Biggie have long been considered the greatest rappers of all time. Both were unique and had great delivery, but there was something about 2 Pac that will never be matched. He is in my mind the greatest ever.

The two songs in which Bone Thugs and Harmony collaborate with Biggie, and then with 2 Pac are two of the greatest songs ever. So much skill in those raps.

Eminem is a very very talented rapper. People like his boldness and that has made him famous, but if you really listen to him he is an amazing talent. He is very similar and may be better than 2 Pac at telling stories. That is a long lost skill in rap today.

Em's first CD, "Infinite" might be my favorite CD ever made.

LOL,I thought it was Sharon OSbourne.

Or maybe it is the fact that they are a low on talent gimmick act.

Biggie had the best flow. 2pac was just the best smack talker but I also enjoyed his music.

Its too bad Snoop didnt come out with another album that was half as good as his first one or he would have got my vote.

Honorable mentions that werent listed- Beastie Boys (even BET had them in the top 10) and a personnel old fave that nobody seems to know - Whodini

Now the love I use to have just left me cold

I use to buy everything from diamonds to gold

For I thought she'd left me, cuz I didn't buy her enough

Cuz she left me alone, with all of my stuff

That maybe one of these days, you'll have to learn

That love is something, that you have to earn

And once you earn it, you gotta know how to keep it

You got to want it, as well as you need it

To have lost love, was a hurtin lesson

But to a mad love, it's a definite question

And I know what the Beatles were thinking of

When they said that money can't buy you love

Give me the fortune, keep the fame," said my man Louis
I agreed, know what he mean because we live the truest lie
I asked him why we follow the law of the bluest eye
He looked at me, he thought about it
Was like, "I'm clueless, why?"
The question was rhetorical, the answer is horrible
Our morals are out of place and got our lives full of sorrow
And so tomorrow comin later than usual
Waitin' on someone to pity us
While we findin beauty in the hideous
They say money's the root of all evil but I can't tell
YouknowhatImean, pesos, francs, yens, cowrie shells, dollar bills
Or is it the mindstate that's ill?
Creating crime rates to fill the new prisons they build
Over money and religion there's more blood to spill
The wounds of slaves in cotton fields that never heal
What's the deal?
A lot of cats who buy records are straight broke
But my language universal they be recitin my quotes
While R&B singers hit bad notes, we rock the boat
of thought, that my man Louis' statements just provoked
Caught up, in conversations of our personal worth
Brought up, through endangered species status on the planet Earth
Survival tactics means, bustin gats to prove you hard
Your firearms are too short to box with God
Without faith, all of that is illusionary
Raise my son, no vindication of manhood necessary

Yo, I'm sure that everbody out listenin agree
That everything you see ain't really how it be
A lot of jokers out runnin in place, chasin the style
Be a lot goin on beneath the empty smile
Most cats in my area be lovin the hysteria
Synthesized surface conceals the interior
America, land of opportunity, mirages and camouflages
More than usually -- speakin loudly, sayin nothin
You confusin me, you losin me
Your game is twisted, want me enlisted -- in your usury
Foolishly, most men join the ranks cluelessly
Buffoonishly accept the deception, believe the perception
Reflection rarely seen across the surface of the lookin glass
Walkin the street, wonderin who they be lookin past
Lookin gassed with them imported designer shades on
Stars shine bright, but the light -- rarely stays on
Same song, just remixed, different arrangement
Put you on a yacht but they won't call it a slaveship
Strangeness, you don't control this, you barely hold this
Screamin brand new, when they just sanitized the old sit
Suppose it's, just another clever Jedi mind trick
That they been runnin across stars through all the time with
I find it's distressin, there's never no in-between
We either ... or Kings
We either bitches or Queens
The deadly ritual seems immersed, in the perverse
Full of short attention spans, short tempers, and short skirts
Long barrel automatics released in short bursts
The length of black life is treated with short worth
Get yours first, them other ... secondary
That type of illin that be fillin up the cemetary
This life is temporary but the soul is eternal
Separate the real from the lie, let me learn you
Not strong, only aggressive, cause the power ain't directed
That's why, we are subjected to the will of the oppressor
Not free, we only licensed
Not live, we just excitin
Cause the captors.. own the masters.. to what we writin
Not compassionate, only polite, we well trained
Our sincerity's rehearsed on stage, it's just a game
Not good, but well behaved cause the ca-me-ra survey
most of the things that we think, do, or say
We chasin after death just to call ourselves brave
But everyday, next man meet with the grave
I give a damn if any fam' recall my legacy
I'm tryin to live life in the sight of God's memory
Like that y'all

Have to get the true essence

I voted for Tupac (I think is the best ever), Eminem is the closest anyone will ever get to him imo, then Biggie. After that I don't think anyone else is in the conversation, but I also think that 99% of rap that has come out in the past 10-15 years has been pretty terrible.

My 4th and 5th were Mos Def and Method Man. Mos Def is very underrated and I voted for Method Man because out of everyone else on the list I like his voice the most. I also really liked his Judgement Day album back in 2000 I think it was.

Ice Cube, he is the wrong ***** to **** with.
Love his old , like in 92 type of old stuff. His rhymes always seemed to be more sincere and real to me. Things he really grew up seeing. Not like now when every rappers first album is talking about Ferraris and Ice and they arent even on album 2 yet.

The Predator rocked...... loved that album. Started off great with the intro, then the Boom! Boom! Clap! as "When Will They Shoot?" kicks in. That was the stuff right there.

eminem over biggie?

not even close every "top list" has biggie and 2pac near the top and eminem below that. Some browns fans need to brush up on their rap/hip hop.

on a side not ive been brushing up on my Bone Thugs N Harmony, good stuff. E1999/Eternal, Krayzie Bone, those were the jams
