You don't need a great longsnapper to win games, but you can't have a bad one either. And a good longnsapper can make the difference between a blocked kick or field goal.
We're not talking about taking a longsnapper in the 1st round; we're talking about the 5th, a round where very few players actually go on to contribute. Pontbriand has contributed and then some.

As we've seen in these playoffs, Special teamers don't really affect the outcome of the game. Especially during field goals.

OLB S WR QB
Obviously, we need more than that, but if we walked away from the offeseason with those 4 holes filled, I'd call that progress....

QB RT S CB LB/any OLB or ILB RB OG TE
As far as LS...remember we are talking about a 5th round investment...I don't care if we get the best LINT PICKER IN THE NFL if its with a 5th round pick it was a worthwhile investment.
Nothing like going to warmups prior to a game and look at the Kickers warming up. The velocity and accuracy just separates Ponti from others. Definitely worthwhile.
Now as for Punters...I think you can get a punter anywhere...there are so many that fall in the cracks - if you look hard enough you can get one.
Kickers? possibly if you see a special one its worthwhile to use that draft pick...but if its from a visible school and not a secret find you got to end up spending a 2nd rounder probably. Oh and when you think you got the right one they might just turn out like Keading
Dawson/Z and Ponti aren't going anywhere and all are excellent.
btw I got a punter I would love to introduce to the Browns
JMHO - I hope we go BPA in the positions noted above!

Unless I'm mis-remembering, but didn't the Bengals do an all-out search for a replacement LS in the middle of the season? They seemed to take the position pretty seriously...
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

From what VERY little I can figure about this year compared to years past, I would suspect that you can't count on players to fall to where they should be. There are a couple positions where I don't see ANY value and that means you will probably see a run on players at another position. I think a few years ago, there was a run on cornerbacks before the middle of the 2nd round, and another year there was a run on offensive linemen in the late first round. Linebackers and defensive ends always go early and often because teams need so many. After I went through, I didn't like the tight ends that I looked at and another position . So all of that is to say I think there may be a run on WideRecievers, Quarterbacks, or Safeties, and Cornerbacks, though which ?? I think if the Browns don't address their needs early they may be surprised how players you'd think would be there are already gone by round 2. OK, this is about Voids and I don't care if they took 2 WR last year and if they have 2 veteran QB's on the team, there is a void at Quarterback production, and a void at wide receiver production. Even though it was easier for opponents to complete passes against the Db's than it is to find someone creepy at a bus station, quarterback and wide receiver are the bigggest voids, in production. The complete failure to get a franchise runningback in 08 (which I told you so) means longterm RB is still a giant need! Because you need 2 superstars, this in no way declares dissatisfaction with Harrison. There are 11 picks, looking at a list of my own hopefuls , there are on it. 2 quarterbacks, 2 wide receivers, 2 linebackers, a safety, and cornerback, a runningback , a tight end, and an offensive lineman. Now I'm not saying in what order they are, but I will say, if it were my hopefuls, there would be another 11 picks before the first longsnapper even was considered. Afterall they have pontbriand. And yes a longsnapper in the 5th would always make me go because I'd think a reach at pass rusher would have more upside.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

We still have enough needs to go BPA...someday in the future our needs will be far n few in between that I think is where you will see us move up for certain guys covering that need.
Also I'm a firm believer in establishing Strengths of the draft...and any time you have a strength in the draft and you can get the top guy - thats a bonanza. That is why I wasn't really afraid of our pick of Center (I was a little in 03 when we took Faine...I was just happy we took OL but not too keen it was Center)...Center in 09 was a big strength of the draft and we came away with the top prospect...Always good.
My point is bang for your buck if you pick that position in that draft where they are a strength you got good value. When you Aren't in top 10 and end up taking a weakness of the draft (usually by end of first round you're coming up with people who should be end of the 2nd ).
So stay away from weak part of the draft...so at # 7 really anything goes...Good is good. But after around 20 the weak positions in the draft - best to stay away from unless you got a diamond in the rough kid late (6th, 7th). Just an observation I have made. Not 100% nothing is 100% but a good thing to find strengths n weaknesses and hope we go in the strong pile

A 5th round pick for a guy like Ponti works for me.
Does anyone remember the 2003 playoffs (SF vs. N.Y. Giants) when the Giants long-snapper cost his team the game? IIRC they had pulled him off the street not too long before that game (note: it was the same day Holcomb lit up the Steelers and Botch over-ruled Foge & went prevent).
Anyway, we need the following immediately, in no particular order (not including drafting a couple linemen to groom):
At least one LB RG or RT. Safety (perhaps two) & a CB QB (haven't written BQ off, but not nearly as hopeful as I once was)

No guarantee that the fg kicker makes that long kick. - But I get you're point. Gimme an O-tackle with the first pick, and then bpa from there on.
