The estimated $36 to $50 roundtrip ticket between Columbus and Cleveland or Cincinnati seems reasonable until you factor in the inevitable $120 hotel bill. The way the train schedules are structured, you could not travel to a Reds, Bengals, Indians or Browns game and return the same day. Ditto for Clevelanders and Cincinnatians taking the train to a Buckeyes football game.

Cincy is a 4 hour drive from Cleveland. So If my wife and I want to take in a Browns v Bengals game in Cincy, we have to leave Cleveland by 7, get to Cincy around 11, gametime is at 1, and the game last until about 4, then we'd leave around 5, and get home around 10.

Personally, I think the Cleveland to Cincy experience is better if we stay overnight, take our time, and head back Monday morning. - In this example the train would be a cool part of our trip. It gives us a chance to relax and travel in a unique way. I like it.

Cleveland to Columbus is a different story, however, I'm sure the railway could make this work as a one day trip.

Still, a 39MPH avg isn't going to make the trip all that great when you can drive Cleveland to Cincy in 4-4.5 hours.

Trains have speed limits too...they can't just zip through every little town at 70 MPH...and since little towns dot the rail lines, you are talking a lot of 25-30 MPH zones.

Unless they build new track that doesn't go through every little hamlet along the way, I can't imagine how it would become quicker or more convenient.

Not to mention that train stations in big cities are pretty much like bus stations. They usually aren't located in the most convenient location. I think Clevelands AMTRAK stop is more the exception then the rule.

It's not like you are going to be able to take a leisurely stroll from the train station your your hotel or wherever it is you are going.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
