we can't sign anyone this summer, other than our own guys. we're pretty much done on that part, although ferry can always work his magic with making a deal here or there.

I would not be surprised at all if LBJ waits until we've lured someone here before he actually signs.

agree with everything else in your post except this part.

1. We are now over the cap and only have the MLE to offer. Doubtful anyone signs the MLE early on in the process when so many teams have $$$ to spend under the cap.

2. LeBron (and to a lesser extent, Wade and Bosh) are going to set the market. Noone is going to want to do ANYTHING until they are signed away and that will start the cascade of contracts. They should all sign in the first week or so of FA this year (they also have the US team stuff coming up in late July and will want their contract status locked up by then)

Just a couple of questions .....

What potential tradable assets do the Cavaliers have for next year? Could we do a sign and trade with Shaq, for example? Can we just re-sign him even if we're over the cap?

We can resign any of our players as long as gilbert is willing to go over the cap.

Also Mo Williams is starting tonight!!

I haven't seen/heard, but I highly doubt it. I would guess probably Sunday would be his first game.

Not a lot ... Most of our "big" contracts are in the 3-4 year range if I remember correctly. We're actually losing quite a bit of expiring contract space with Shaq and Lebron becoming free agents.

Yes ... but with the number of teams that will be under the salary cap next year, it will be difficult. We have the Bird Rights to Shaq, which means we CAN sign him to anything up to a max deal. Luxary Tax would still apply to that once we go over the cap. We could do a sign and trade, but it would have to be with a team that can't just offer him a straight contract and stay under the cap. We would also have to take on some contracts to get the figures to match up.

I'm not exactly sure if anybody would do that though. I'm not sure Shaq is really all that appealing to any suitors that they would want to give up legitimate assets to get him. He'll more than likely sign on with some team who has cap space ... although it won't be for the max, and we could likely match that figure if we really wanted to. It would be up to him where he wants to go though.

Denver is a tough team, given the Cavs trouble every time they play this season. I really wish AJ was playing, with Mo at full strength.

Having been out of the city since June, and having to listen to Reggie Miller duing this game, I MISS AUSTIN CARR! My god is superior to this "announcing". Cleveland fans are blessed with Jim Donovan and Carr.

They're good yes, but we make free throws and it's already over in a rout.

We might be seeing Powe and Jamison tomorrow. I remember reading on Cleveland.com that Powe thought he could go tonight but that the training staff was planning on holding. He said that he felt that he was above 99%.

That will be exciting getting to play for once with Jamison instead of being against him. I can't wait to see the guy in action.

I'm most anxious to see what this team is going to look like around the end of March.

Jamison should be fully up to speed, Powe will be fully involved and hopefully Z will be back in the fold.
Games like tonight will not be lost with those pieces in place. We picked a bad night to not be able to even shoot 60% FT's.

Honestly, I think we missed Z a little bit tonight ... well more of a lack of Center depth. Both Shaq and Andy were sitting on 4/5 fouls most of the fourth quarter, and Denver would drive to the hoop knowing they would get little to no resistance.

Well that and shooting something like 55% at the free throw line is just rediculous.

I'm not terribly worried about this game. We're coming off a week-long break, an emotional game minus a Cleveland favorite, not to mention down a man, and playing the deepest team in the West, and lose by 2 in overtime. Plus, 17 missed free throws? That's an anomaly, not the norm. We'll bounce back.

Doc Rivers and Phil Jackson are not happy with Cleveland Cavaliers' deal
By Starting Blocks

Lisa DeJong, The Plain Dealer Zydrunas Ilgauskas Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson and Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers, of all people, criticized the Cleveland Cavaliers' acquiring Antawn Jamison by using Zydrunas Ilgauskas as a key piece in the deal.

Especially since Ilgauskas will probably get bought out by the Washington Wizards and it's expected that Ilgauskas will return to Cleveland after 30 days.

Reporter Dave McMenamin wrote on ESPNLosAngeles.com that Rivers and Jackson had some strong things to say about the Cavaliers' deal.

"They're going to get Ilgauskas back and it's going to be one of those scenarios that we see in the NBA where you ship a player out, you get another player, then your player retires or they pay him off and then he comes back in 30 days," Jackson said. "I don't know what that does for the league. I think that's kind of a weird situation."

Rivers agreed with Jackson, even though the loophole has helped his team in the past.

"I have a problem with that," Rivers said before Thursday's Lakers-Celtics game at Staples Center. "I loved it three years ago when we did it with Gary Payton if you remember, but now I think it sucks. I think it's a terrible deal."

The loophole certainly helped the Celtics when they traded Payton to Atlanta in 2005 for Antoine Walker and Payton returned to Boston after being waived by the Hawks.

Sometimes the business end of professional sports just sucks. Hopefullly, Z will make his way back here for championship run. Either way, I wish him all the best.

The Wiz have to buy him out....whenever that happens. Then we wait for Z to make his decision. He can annouce his intentions as soon as that happens (though he can't sign 30 days from yesterday).

lol....Phil is silently trying to figure out how he can become coach here in the future. Lord knows he only coaches teams that could contend for titles without a coaching staff. If something serious were to happen to Kobe tomorrow, Jackson would "retire" the day after tomorrow.

Drew Gooden was traded to the clippers, and correct me if im wrong, they already bought him out. If the wizards had no doubts about buying Z out, wouldnt they have done it already? What are they waiting for?

I'm not hip to all the NBA CBA stuff, but they may just be negotiating the terms of the buyout.

If you actually listen to Doc Rivers when he says that, i.e. see it on tv instead of reading his quote in print, you can tell he's clearly joking around in that "haha...oh crap..." kind of way. He knows that he did this a few years ago and now the shoe is on the other foot, and of course he doesn't like it, but he's kind of like well what can ya do? And definitely points for being honest, you don't see that much. Phil Jackson on the other hand is being a whiny baby about it, as expected. They both know we just upped the ante and they're not liking what they see for themselves down the road. Stan Van Gundy isn't taking it too well either from what I saw of his quotes. He came out and said something along the lines of we don't scare him, which I'm pretty sure means we scare him.

I also thought a valid point was raised in the interview. Why not move the trade deadline up to before the All-Star break? Right now they want everyone to be focused on the festivities, so they don't allow trades to go down over the weekend. But everyone is buzzing and speculating about who will go where and the opposite of what they want to happen is happening. If they moved it to the Thursday before the deadline the people will still be talking about who already went where, but it will be much less of a distraction than the way it is now. Plus there won't be that odd week after the break where players and teams are uncertain about their rosters. Let them work it out before the break so that when they come out and start the second half of the season its with the team they'll have going into the playoffs.

http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2010/02/zydrunas_ilgauskas_off_to_join.html

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Zydrunas Ilgauskas was on his way to the airport this morning, heading for Washington, D.C., and his new team, the Wizards. The thought of putting on a new jersey makes him almost queasy.

And he'll have to wear No. 17, because the Wizards have retired his usual No. 11 in honor of Elvin Hayes.

But that might be the smallest change facing the beloved long-time Cavs center, the franchise leader in games played, rebounds and blocked shots who was traded to the Wizards on Wednesday as part of the three-team deal that brought Antawn Jamison to the Cavaliers .

It has been a tough three days for Ilgauskas. After a long practice on Wednesday, he spent two hours with some teammates at Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital visiting terminally ill children. As soon as he stepped outside, he got the call from Cavs general manager Danny Ferry telling him he'd been traded after 14 years with the Cavs, who made the 7-foot-3 center from Lithuania their first-round pick in the 1996 draft, No. 20 overall.

"It was emotional,'' Ilgauskas said of the call with Ferry, a friend and former teammate whose voice quivered when he told reporters about the phone call during a press conference on Thursday.

Though it has been widely rumored that Washington will release Ilgauskas, who would be able to sign back with the Cavs in 30 days, nothing has been discussed to this point.

"Right now I'm a Wizard,'' he said. "I think eventually they'll let me go, but that's just my guess. They haven't told me anything yet. First I've got to go to Washington, and hopefully after a couple of days they'll let me go home.''

The Wizards have been in turmoil since NBA commissioner David Stern suspended All-Star guard Gilbert Arenas and teammate Javaris Crittenton for bringing guns into the locker room in a dispute over a gambling debt. Since then, there has been a fire sale, with the Wizards dumping salary in advance of the team being sold. It's unlikely they will be willing to keep Ilgauskas, a 33-year-old veteran who will make $11.5 million this season. It's more likely they will negotiate a buyout.

If that happens, Ilgauskas will have several options. He admits a number of teams have called his agent, Herb Rudoy. Though neither Ilgauskas nor Rudoy identified them, Dallas and Denver are thought to be in the market for a big man.

Ilgauskas wouldn't say for sure he'd be back, but he wouldn't rule it out, either, in spite of the fact that there were some hurt feelings earlier this season when coach Mike Brown didn't play Ilgauskas in the game that would have given him the franchise record for games played. He did get the record in the next game.

"We'll figure things out,'' he said. "I'll do what's best for my family.''

The Cavaliers players and fans hold a special place in his heart. He tried but found it too hard to watch Thursday's game against Denver on his television at home.

"This is my team,'' he said. "I'm going to be mad, but not so mad that I wouldn't come back. I understand it's a business. This is my home. No matter what happens in the future, that will never change.''

2 losses to the Nuggets.

24 free points given away because of missed free throws. Championship teams dont give games away like they did both times to Denver. Tis team still has alot of work to do.
