INDIANAPOLIS -- The Cleveland Browns have no intentions of allowing restricted free agent running back Jerome Harrison to be signed on the cheap by another team.
Team president Mike Holmgren said the team plans to assign a high-level tender to Harrison.
Specifically, Holmgren said the Browns will "tender him something to make it very difficult for somebody to come in and get him."
What does that mean?
The Browns will either assign Harrison the first-round tender of $2.521 million or the first and third-round tender of $3.168 million.
The Browns would retain the right of first refusal.
Harrison rushed for 561 yards during the final three games of last season.
Holmgren did note that Harrison's lack of ideal size could affect his durability if he was called upon as an every-down back.
"He handled himself in the last part of the season beautifully when he was given the ball a lot, but he's not the biggest guy in the world and it's hard for them," Holmgren said ."You need a couple guys. That’s one of the things we hope to get out of the draft.'

This is good news. Either we get Harrison on a 1-year contract for $3.168 million, sign him to a multi year extension, or get at least a 1st and possibly a 3rd. Sounds good to me.

Way to not tip your hand, Mike. Interesting statement. I like the idea of a high tender. It's only $3.5 Mil in an uncapped year. That's a no brainer for how he came on at the end of the year. I actually would like to see a back taken. Of course I want the bigger back who can bulldoze and block to complement Harrison. Hopefully to be had in the later rounds certainly...

I would also another back, but I would like more of a 3rd round guy late in the draft. I like Javarris James for that role.
If we went bruiser, I would love to get Toby Gerhart.

I wonder what they're going to do with DQ.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Mangini heaped praise on DQ last year duing camp and during the season for his play and attitude.. my guess, Mangini and Ryan are firmly in his corner.. I bet there is either a high tender or new contract in the works....

Good news. I'd comment further, but I don't want this to turn into a draft thread.

Great news, Jerome has earned it. I hope they get a nice back in the draft to compliment him, and keep Davis to see what he offers. GET VICKERS LOCKED UP!!!!!

I would go the 2.52 first round tender myself. You still have the ability to match any offer.
I guess the key is would someone offer him the 3.16....if they did you might have just cost yourself a 3rd rounder.
For me, always set the low end of the scale and see where the high end goes, then make your decision to keep him or take the pick.
I have slept since last draft season....would we get this years pick or next years pick if some team signed him before the draft??
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

Just clicking. It's funny how many people are so happy about his tender when we had threads last year where people vehemently argued he should be cut.

I'd love that too, I think him & JH would make a nice one two punch for our backfield, toss in Davis nad we got a good start on a soild backfield, not great but soild.

Which is all you need in the NFL today. A solid backfield... and a good passing game.

Lock up the good guys! Get 'em a line, speed outside that catches. Might be fun. Looking forward to this drft despite the kinda screwy NFL setup over so many days. But REALLY interested in FA more than the combine. Might generate further picks during FA trading it looks like to me.
