Cleveland Browns release tight end Steve Heiden By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer March 12, 2010, 7:37PM
The Browns released Steve Heiden, who battled back from a torn ACL last season. CLEVELAND -- On the same day the Browns signed free agent tight end Ben Watson, they released eight-year Browns veteran tight end Steve Heiden, the club announced.
Heiden, coming off surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered at the end of the 2008 season, caught only 10 passes last season for 73 yards and one touchdown in 2009.
He suffered an ankle injury Nov. 16 against Baltimore and was placed on injured reserve, missing the final seven games of the season.
The Browns acquired Heiden in 2002 in a trade with San Diego for a seventh-round pick, and it turned out to be one of the team's better recent moves. In his 11 seasons overall, he has 201 catches for 1,689 yards and 14 TDs.
In other Browns news, linebacker Jason Trusnik signed his second-round tender. Trusnik started 10 games for the Browns after being acquired from the Jets in the Braylon Edwards trade. He finished with 54 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

I have ALWAYS liked Heiden, this is sad, but not unexpected. I hope Royal is next.

Thanks for the hard work, Steve, and good luck wherever your career takes you from here!
I'll always remember the big catch and run for a TD he had up at Lambeau a few years ago.

Always thought he was one of the better TE's in the NFL, one hard working guy and he deserves a ring.
It's too bad that his career is likely over but I'm glad the Browns finally are cutting some of the dead weight before they start to harm the Browns with their play.
you had a good run Hank.

I hate to see him go, but it's time.
I am glad that he was a Cleveland Brown. He seems like a really exceptional person, and an excellent player as well.

This really saddens me Heiden & Tucker were always my two favorite players the last several years. Gonna miss them. Best wishes in your future, Heiden.

Yeah, well, I edited it.........but here's the scoop. He was walking in to the hotel, I asked him for an autograph.....he said "no, I have to get treatment for my finger"......and I said "can I get a picture of you with my wife?", and he said "if she comes up to the room with me".

Bummer... I always liked Steve. High-effort player and a genuinely good guy. Too bad he got let go while we still have that stiff Royal on our roster. Oh well...

This guy was the man, showed imense amounts of heart, had good hands, and the right kind of attitude required for the position. If you ask me, he's a throwback to the football players of old; guys who did their job and did it well with no complaints. Thanks for everything, tough to say goodbye because it seems like he's been here forever. It's almost going to be sort of like this, but worse, when Dawson retires.

Rather have kept Heiden than Royal. Maybe injuries are taking a toll on the guy.... Always loved Heiden. Stand up guy, hard worker, and great hands. Very reliable receiver. Best of luck to ya, Steve.

I can say in training camp Royal never has time to sign the kids autographs, yet guys like Frarely, Cribbs, Heiden, Shea, Faine, hell even The Fris ALWAYS find time to sign autographs, usually every kid there waiting. I know I for one always appreciated that, even though I am not an autograph guy, just liked that the guys aren't full of themselves like rapistburger.

I sort of expected that this was coming.
Sad to see you go Steve Heiden. I don't know if you'll retire or try to catch on somewhere else, but either way good luck. You are a very classy player and have never been a problem. Hardblocking and good hands. Good luck.

This is what I suspect. I think Royal is going to be utilized as a blocker and occasionally for an easy pass. But running those routes like last year, that will only happen if injuries occur. I expect Watson/Moore to be our receiving TEs. Robert Royal will block, and he's a good blocker.

Probably the best compliment I can give a player: he played the game the right way.
Good luck in the future Steve!

Very expected really.
Steve was a good player and a guy I am proud was associated with my team.
As for Royal....I doubt he goes....he is a plus blocker, and all teams like to have one of those at TE.
Watson, Moore, and Royal will probably be the TE group for the next several years.
I really like Moore as a receiver type TE...
I think Watson and Moore will combine for 80 or more catches, and we will see many 2 TE sets with both of them on the field.
Vickers is a guy I wonder about.....a great blocker but not that great with the ball in the air headed his way. I am wondering if Moore might take more of a H-back role and be that guy swinging out of the backfield.

Not even mad with Hank....any time you have a new regime, you have turnover....in this case it isn't totally new since the coach remains....pretty rare with a FO revamp, but almost like a 75% changing of the guard.
I wonder how many times the GM and President/Head Honcho changed faces but the HC remained the same?
Can't be very often. Has to be fairly unique.
