By James Walker ESPN

The new regime of the Cleveland Browns never appeared sold on Brady Quinn. So it was no surprise Saturday when the team made its most dramatic move to date to reshape its quarterback position.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Browns signed veteran quarterback Jake Delhomme to a two-year contract, likely signaling the end of the Quinn era in Cleveland.

Delhomme comes to the Browns with a lot of starting experience. Barring any dramatic or unforeseen moves in free agency or the draft, pencil in Delhomme as Cleveland's 2010 starting quarterback.

Browns president Mike Holmgren said he does not believe in quarterback competitions. So there will not be one between Delhomme and Quinn. In the meantime, Holmgren will continue to shop Quinn to see what value he can get for the former first-round pick.

If nothing materializes, Quinn will be Delhomme's backup along with Seneca Wallace. But the safe money right now is that Quinn will not wear orange and brown next season. Quinn already has his house for sale, and it's best that both parties move on at this point.

Quinn was hailed as a Columbus, Ohio product who could finally bring the Browns back to prominence. Instead, he spent most of two seasons backing up former Pro Bowler Derek Anderson and was benched in 2009 after a disappointing start.

There should be some level of interest in Quinn, who has a limited amount of starts and was never surrounded with quality players in Cleveland. We listed five possible suitors earlier this week in the AFC North blog.

But despite all the excitement that came with Quinn coming to Cleveland three years ago, everything likely came to a close Saturday with Cleveland signing a 35-year-old quarterback.

But what is Quinn's current trade value?

Quinn generated some interest last year, but the Browns declined because they were unsure if he was their franchise quarterback. After another inconsistent season that ended with Quinn on injured reserve, his stock has taken a significant hit.

This much we know: It's impossible to get a first-round pick for Quinn at this point. So that guarantees Cleveland would "sell low" in any trade scenario compared to Quinn's draft status.

There may be teams out there that believe Quinn could be productive in the right situation, particularly if the Browns' asking price is cheap. But based on growing evidence, it appears less and less likely Quinn will be Cleveland's Week 1 starter this fall.

Who might be interested?

After garnering the opinions of our ESPN.com NFL bloggers, I compiled a list of five possible destinations.

5. Arizona Cardinals

Skinny: The organization doesn't seem willing to hand over the keys to Matt Leinart without making him compete for the job. Could Quinn be that competition?

4. Seattle Seahawks

Skinny: Seattle traded Seneca Wallace to Cleveland, so there is precedent to work out a deal with Holmgren's former team. The Seahawks are visiting with Anderson this week, but if they fail to reach an agreement, Quinn might enter the conversation.

3. Carolina Panthers

Skinny: Jake Delhomme is out and Matt Moore is in. But are the Panthers really 100-percent convinced Moore is a franchise quarterback who can lead them to a Super Bowl?

2. Denver Broncos

Skinny: The Broncos sent out feelers for Quinn last year when the Jay Cutler situation went down. They ended up with Kyle Orton. But now they could have both this year and get Quinn on the cheap.

1. Kansas City Chiefs

Skinny: Former Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis is the offensive coordinator in Kansas City, and Quinn knows that system like the back of his hand. So Quinn wouldn't be bad insurance for Matt Cassel. Defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel also was Quinn's head coach in Cleveland.

I agree Delray, alot of fellow browns fans are whiners to the fullest, and yes it is annoying.I do feel them on wanting to win,but again new man in the FO so it is going to be a process.im excited about the browns future to be honest!WE DO need a qb of the future, yes and i do have faith it will come.I am tired of being dogged out by fans of other teams about how horrible my boys are,but regardless i am a browns fan and proud.I liked the delhomme signing..

I agree100%! I know we need our qb of the future. I'll leave that up to guys like Holmgren and Heckert because that is what they do. I understand how fans can be frustrated and all but let these guys do what they do. Delhomme was given a huge extension after being very successful a year or so ago. He had some very good years along with some bad moments. No, I am not saying he is Brees, or Manning. But he understands the WCO and between Jake and Wallace, they can definitely buy us time until Holmgren and Heckert find us our QB of the future.

Who has the higher probability of making mistakes when it comes to our QB? Holmgren/Heckert or the fans? I'll let the Browns brass do their job and root like hell for whoever trots out on that field for OUR BROWNS!

I hope that all the "angry" fans that are bashing Delhomme and Wallace don't keep bashing and then start booing these guys prematurely. How bout giving them our support and welcome them to Cleveland!

I honestly hate this type of attitude. Phil Savage, Butch Davis, and Carmen Policy know a lot more than any of us about the game of football, yet they still screwed up plenty. The most brilliant of football minds out there mess up, and when they do, we can criticize them. Just because they are more knowledgeable than us, does not mean they did not make a mistake.

It remains to be seen whether signing Delhomme was a mistake or not, though I definitely dislike the move. In the mean time, before we know if it was a good or bad move, I will express my opinion on it.

I wasn't referring to your opinions actually. I always look for your opinions and enjoy your input whether I agree with you or don't.

I like the move. Jake IMO is a pretty good qb who along with Wallace is going to give us a pretty stable situation for a while.

I don't know when and if we draft a qb, but as far as stop gap is concerned, i don't buy that.

How far in to the future do you people look? Me...maybe 2-3 years tops. With the way teams change players for one reason or another, I find it hard to look more than a few years forward....and as far as I can see, both Jake and Seneca are members of the team.

Quit looking for that "franchise" qb because he may never be there. Whoever is taking your snaps is your "franchise" qb, so in that regard, either one of the new guys is better than either of the old guys, so what's the beef??

Quite frankly, I haven't seen anything reported where Delhomme is our starter. I've seen where he's been told he can "certainly compete" for the starting position. Isn't that true of any QB we bring in here?

We don't have a Manning or a Brady or a Brees on this team. We don't have a guy who everyone and their brother knows is the starter. Instead, we have an unknown, though somewhat known (Quinn), a backup who may be an average starter but likely won't be a Pro Bowler at any time (Wallace) and a vet who is in his last few years (Delhomme). Doesn't sound like a great QB situation to me.

So, we trade for Wallace. We bring in Delhomme as a FA. And Quinn is likely shipped out.

I believe that Wallace is our starter. We actually gave something up for him other than money. It's pretty thin reasoning, but it just sticks in my head.

But, if Delhomme beats him out and he's our starter, than I'll support him. I will say that if Delhomme beats him out, he'd better never throw an INT or he will be done for the fans. He will be booed and thrown under the bus DA style. That's just how our fans are.

But if Wallace is starting and Delhomme is the backup, people won't boo Wallace as much because they won't want Delhomme playing. Then again, I thought the same thing about Quinn. Perhaps Browns fans will just never be happy with the QB situation, no matter who we have.

I have to say that I don't feel totally comfortable with this move. I'm not as chicken little as 90% of the posters around here who loved getting Holmgren and now seem like they want to go after him with pitchforks. The fickle nature of the Browns fan, I guess.

But, I'm not going to speculate too much more than I have. None of us know what the plan is, and none of us know how things will turn out. But, I just have a feeling that Wallace is going to be our starter.

And I think people need to stop assuming that Delhomme is our starter just because we signed him.

79...I believe I read that Holmgren did not promise Delhomme anything if he chose to come to Cleveland...other than he would have to compete for the job.

Found it... Holmgren insisted he did not -- and would not -- promise Delhomme a starting job.

"I told him when I met with him that we'll never say that to a free agent guy, tell him, 'You're the starter,'" Holmgren said. "I think if you promise guys those things, and then something happens (to change that), then you have a disgruntled player. We're not going to do that."

7 mil in the first year pretty much tells him he is the starter!!!!

I think its safe to say Delhomme will be starting for us.....Now I havnt voiced a reaction to this move yet....still trying to see let it soak in. But I wouldn't be suprised if Delhomme starts, backed up by Wallace....and if we cant get value for him Quinn moves to number 3, but if we do find a trade partner we will draft a 3rd or 4th round QB to groom.

I am going to take a wait and see approach to Delhomme before I jump on saying this is good or bad. So far the only move we have made in free agency where I am completly happy is Ben Watson....dont know enough about Delhomme, Fujita, or Pashos to really form an opinion!

It don't take long for some fans to get right back in the angry, shocked, questioning and grumbling mode. The MH euphoria has worn off apparently!

Relax...now just enjoy the ride...Holmgren didn't come here to ruin his legacy.

Sometimes this board just cracks me up.

I do not understand the logic of several posters here. Sounds like some are already against Holmgren and ready to run him out of town.

I think we have had a pretty good offseason. I did not expect much in freeagency. We added Pashos, Fujita and Watson- and did not break the bank in signing them. All three players make us a better team. All three are upgrades at their respective positions.

Now to the QB's- this cleaning house is actually the best way to solve the problem. Anderson was not going to be the guy and his contract was outrageous for the production he offered. Too bad Quinn never got it. NFL classics can be fun too watch at times. I recently saw some games of the early Drew Bledsoe. Even in his second season, it was plain as day that he was going to be a good QB. Compare that to what we have seen out of Quinn. I hate too say it, but he had his chance, and what we have seen is a QB that needs a new home. He needs a shot of confidence, maybe that will help his accuracy.

Is Jake the answer- NO! I think we all know that. But he is better then anything we have had on this roster in years. Wallace is insurance. The third spot with be a draft pick. If this guy does not show progress, we draft another QB in 2011, when it looks to be a much stronger class. Its a good plan, we are a better team today, and have a plan for the future.

I kind of understand what the FO is doing. Patching the road after a lot of plowing over the winter- SOME fixes are short term pothole patches while Others are redoing the partial or whole street and yet some are just telling people we will get to that street when we have time.

The reason I don't like the signing is simply because it is like paving half the street and leaving the other half unpaved rittled with potholes. (maybe I should like the signing) It does give the FO more options to get the BPA at the 7 spot or any spot we draft. I am not a fan of the dollars invested. I will like the signing a lot better if we draft a QB after the first round- eg trading up for another 2nd round pick. We will have a more than capable backup in Wallace. My guess is that we will not have any QB's on this team that we had last year- even if it means we get rid of Quinn for a 7th rounder. Browns fans are obsessed with QB's.

It also might be a situation where we tried to get another QB in here but they wouldn't trade for them or they simply didn't want to come here. In that case there really are not that many decent or average QB's out there that are proven and can get the job done. There are a lot of unknown's like Kolb out there. No one really knows the truth as to that situation except the guys behind closed doors.

I personally think MH knew the fans and how we act- he cleaned house to avoid the BQ DA SW QB debate and the Boo's as the season wears on. He basically brought in a new crop of players that no one loves or wants to see as their QB of the future.

Yep and he did well at it,the last few years Carolina has kind of gotten away from that WCO because of their strong runnning game.

Maybe Jake could be a good mentor to a certain big, mobile QB who may just be there in the second round and could sit for a year or two and learn.

I think the "beef" is two-fold. One, some feel that Quinn never has really had a shot to be the QB. He and Anderson were always looking over at Mangenius to see when they were gonna get pulled. Whether you think either one has the talent to be THE QB is immaterial. It's awfully hard to keep your head in the game when you are just waiting to get yanked.

Secondly, many would question whether either new guy is actually better than the old guys. Delhomme WAS better but is that true now? Judging his performance based on his last dozen or so games would say, no, he isn't better than the old guys. Add in the fact that when he was better he wasn't playing with these guys may lead many to believe this move was just made to say the FO is making moves. Thus keeping the fans interested if not happy.

Obviously, this is what we'll get to watch this year on the field. I hope Jake returns to his early career form. But let's just say I'll believe it when I see it.

Yup,, here's some info for those that didn't think about that...

So what does Delhomme have that Quinn doesn't? In addition to 55 more victories, a Pro Bowl, two NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl appearance, he has that magic bullet known as the West Coast offense in his arsenal.

Delhomme spent three seasons learning Holmgren's preferred scheme from Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, who was his offensive coordinator in New Orleans from 2000-02. Like Wallace, Delhomme is well-versed in the West Coast, to which the Browns are making a seismic shift

That being said, welcome to Cleveland, Jake. Hope you play like Drew Brees...or else!

Sounds like Tebow to me. Trade down a few picks, pick up a another 2nd rounder and take Tebow around pick 15.

He comes in, works on what he needs to work on for a couple of years, then bing, bam, boom...we're set.

I have a twitter account so I can read what some of the "experts" are saying. And while we all agree that Quinn has not been very good and and that his trade value is low, a lot of experts are still high on him. Experts that I respect. Chris Mortensen and Jaws.

I completely agree that Quinn's time in Cleveland is over and needs to be over. He needs to be traded. Perhaps we could get a 3rd or 4th for him?

One thing to think about is how Delhomme will fit in our system. We know we will be running a modified WCO.

Question for all.
We all seem assured that the qb of the future will be drafted,if not this year, then certainly next.
So I'm wracking my brain here,I don't seem to recall either Holmgren/Heckert drafting a decent qb.Kolb is all I can come up with, and who really knows about him.
I just don't have the same overwhelming confidence that these guys can draft the next great qb.

Let's see,,,

Couch, Wynn, Frye, Quinn and McKown.. That's the drafted QB's right?

Holcomb, Garcia, Anderson, Pederson, Dilfer... that's the FA aquisitions right?

To answer your question about "how many times", Looks like 10 to me unless I missed someone.....

Different regimes, same result..

Hopefully the difference this time is Holmgren.. generally accepted as one of the best football minds out there today.

Dumping DA and maybe trading or cutting BQ.. not earth shattering.. but given DA's contract and BQ's inability to outright win the job from DA or Frye, I'd say these are necessary moves to clear the decks.

Bringing in Wallace and Delhomme while not exactly what anyone dreamed of, may, depending on what the Browns do in the draft and the rest of FAgency, turn out to be good moves.

I am guessing the second day of the draft, we'll see the entire plan unfold..

The picture will become clearer...

Was hoping this deal wouldn't go down, but now that it has,I'll give Jake a clean slate and support him 100%. If Jake is as terrible as many on here believe,MH would not have pulled the trigger on this. So for now, this move will be considered an upgrade at the QB position until it proves otherwise.

It sounds like Holmgren is backtracking a little. At first he said no competition.

This is all I've been able to think about, since we got Delhomme. We bring in him and Wallace and BOTH of them want to start. Expect to start actually. I wouldn't want to hear it any other way. Although how much confidence did Delhomme in starting again if he was on his way to visit Drew Brees' kingdom? OK, I'm rambling . . .

I don't think Holmgren said NO competition, just that he doesn't BELIEVE in them. If thats the case, it sure as heck looks like he's getting one. I felt like the Quinn/Anderson era needed to end for sure, but what the heck kind of era are we entering now . . . ?

I do belive I mentioned Delhomme and Kerry Collins as what looked like might be a good fit, sometime not more recently than mid last season.

If you were looking for a move to get Troy Smith, then there is no reason to complain about this move.

The Browns are at least in a more stable situation with Delhomme as an option... when it comes to having the option rather than the need to draft a rookie quarterback.

<< Jake Delhomme is more in the Anderson mold (gunslinger) than in the Quinn mold ( dinker dunker ) >>

Like it or Freaking not! What I witness here is a situation where on draft day, the Browns are more in position today be comfortable with taking a defensive player ( Berry) with the first pick and maybe look for a quarterback in the 2nd to be still on the board. More in position today than 2 days ago.

I still think the Browns will hope for a new quarterback on par with one of the top 6 Qb's to be drafted this year. Here is why I think it.

It is not the age of Delhomme 35, it is the length of the contract 2 years.

Even Frye, and Holcombe, Couch, Couch's 2nd, Anderson, Quinns, ( shoot, even Cribbs) shooot, even Keven Johnson,... did I miss someone,.. oh yeah Dilfer, and Garcia. Of the Qb options since 99, which signed a contract less than 3 years?. ??

none.
so that means?

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Someone, given mentoring and time to learn, will be the man for the next 10 plus years..

How many drafts have we said this same exact thing? We always get screwed at QB. Always. I blame the past FO's for that. I really hope Holmgren & Co. know what they're doing this time because none of this is looking like an upgrade.

That being said, welcome to Cleveland, Jake. Hope you play like Drew Brees...or else!

Well, I suppose we could keep wasting time with bad QB's to see if they finally pan out as to appease the fans. Not really a good strategy but, hey, it least everyone gets a good shot.

As to the person who asked about Holmgren and Heckert drafting QB's, Holmgren never drafted a QB outside of backups *that includes Hasselbeck and Wallace.* Now, of course, Matt became the starter in Seattle and Wallace is going to get his shot here. The only other QB I can think of that Holmgren drafted is David Greene, but that was a late round pick and he did not have a good arm either. Holmgren also developed Montana, Young, and Favre.

Heckert was part of the Philly organization when they drafted McNabb and he was the GM when they drafted Kolb. They have a pretty good record in drafting and developing QB's. Not to say they don't make a mistake, but they have done very well in both areas.

I am just convinced he is going to be a heck of a qb.

If you don't like the guy, fine. That isn't reason enough for me to stop expressing my opinion.

Which is what we've done around here with every QB we've ever had. It just strikes me as funny that when some people do it it's okay and when others do it they have no Earthly idea what they are talking about.

I am not sure if you are scolding me or simply making a point?

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

You act as though you've seen enough to KNOW BQ is a "bad" QB. You haven't. Just as we haven't seen enough to know that he's a good QB.

Quite frankly, I haven't seen anything reported where Delhomme is our starter. I've seen where he's been told he can "certainly compete" for the starting position. Isn't that true of any QB we bring in here?

Well, you gotta read between the lines, '79.

Consider this: Setting aside a #1 pick like Russell because being drafted is much different than signing a free agent, how many teams pay a guy like Delhomme $7 million in the first year to possibly ride the bench?

Let's go one step further............

Remember what Delhomme said: If he's a backup, he would rather go to other places. So now he's signed in Cleveland.

It's pretty obvious mi amigo that Delhomme is our starter and Wallace is our backup, and that Quinn has played his last game as a Brown. The only way he can possibly stay is if he's placed in moth-balls while Holmgren tries to hold out hope that a big-time QB goes down to injury and a team needs an emergency guy.

Delhomme didn't come here to "compete" for the job. It's his to lose.

***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy.
Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

You and I haven't. Apparently Heckert and Holmgren have.

Judging by his starts, you can see trends. Can you see the whole picture? No but you can get an idea about him. I'm not saying he's a bad QB, he's just not good. He's completely and totally below average so far in his career. He's mildly inaccurate, more so in other ranges than others. His arm is mildly weak, he's bright and can read a defense. He gets rattled and holds the ball too long while going through progressions.

Can he fix some of that? Sure. However, you can't fix accuracy and arm strength. Quinn has the ability to be a decent starter on a good team, a great fit in Minnesota and a horrible fit in Cleveland.
