Despite all the talk over the BQ trade, I'm surprised no one in lauding the acquisition of Peyton Hillis. Honestly, I think this kid will surprise a load of folks this year. Watch the games where he got the start...Runs strong, good vision, decent speed. He and Harrison will be a great one-two punch this year.

Does no one else think we got a diamond in the rough here?

Yesterday there was a thread for Hillis. I think it got deleted because the original link was from the Bleacher Report.

In that thread everyone was pretty much stating that they were very excited about Hillis being on the team.

I must agree with your suprise and add i would be surprise if he ever starts. I think being the "ham sandwich" in the trade of quinn for a ham sandwich is part of the problem. Or a ham sandwich and a beer( a sixth round pick) for Quinn. I must agree he better be some fine Ham sandwich to be remembered as Denver is still having a bellylaugh over the deal.

I guess the thread I said in it got deleted, but I think getting Hillis solidifes our RB corps. He needed a pounder and we got one and can now shore up other areas in the draft. I'm excited about our one-two-(three?! We'll see what James Davis has) punch.

You can't be serious, plus I believe there is another pick next year too. Belly laughs, GMAB. Three players for a bad QB is what I call good value. Hillis is very underrrated, and is just the kind of smashmouth back we've needed. Harrison is the starter, so you could be right there, but him and Hillis are both huge threats out of the backfield, so the passing dynamic doesn't change when he is in.

Quinn fanboi. He'll be gone soon enough.

We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

Not to mention that the folks in Denver were in love with Hillis.

I believe he is a good ST guy also. From the video in the other thread, he looks like a slobber knocker kind of guy. I believe that is exactly what many of us have wanted to go with Harrison. What impressed me the most was his catching the ball out of the backfield, good hands, and he attacked the defender after the catch. No wussy here, just a good football player.

The best thing about this, IMO, is it opens the draft more for Heckert to sign more BPAs. And I feel that will be some young lineman and DBs. I'm liking the moves so far, but I'll miss Hank.

Remains to be seen, but I do think it releases any pressure we may have felt to take a RB,....

Here's the video.

I will admit this guy is intriguing. I especially like the way he refuses to go out of bounds and the way he goes at defenders. I'd like to see a two back set with a scat back and a bruiser.

Video deleted do to profanity.

Around the 2:25 min mark he BEASTED Wimbley. Bulldozed him. Not sure how I feel about that, I have conflicted feelings as its watching a Browns player get beat, yet Wimbley is no longer on the team and Hillis is now a Brown.

I never considered Hillis to be a "ham sandwich" in the Quinn deal but I did not realize the guy had such good hands.

Hillis should be a welcomed weapon in the new offense and could be a prime target on 3rd down.

We'll never know that for sure now, but your indication is pretty spot on otherwise,... If we get ANYTHING more from Hillis than Denver gets from Quinn, it's a win-win.

Looks like a solid player, no doubt. Toughness and soft hands stand out in the video. Without seeing any more of his body of work, I can't say much else about the guy. Seems like a nice pick-up.

That looks like a kind of pattern with him. I think I saw him take on Rogers in there, too. In one the earlier plays he appeared to go after a defensive back. He looked like he was doing the hitting on several of those highlights. I like the way he runs, he's a straight ahead with his shoulders square the to LOS kind of guy. It's easy to look good in a highlight reel but it does show some of his traits as a ball carrier.

ETA: 2nd play against Miami and the 4th where he jumped a defender and then layed the wood to the guy who got the stop. If he brings that attitude he'll be a fan favorite for sure.

I'm curios to know why he was buried on the depth chart in Denver. I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

Actually Ooo, we will find out eventually. As far as team contributions, BQ has set the bar pretty low. A couple of good games by him this season and I believe he will have already surpassed BQ.

Didn't he tear his hamstring?

What's the recovery time on such an injury / likelihood of 100% recovery?

I'm excited but I'll way to see if he's the same guy in camp.

Definitely true.

Our QBs managed to average an amazing (ly bad) 128 yards passing per game last year, and only 11 TD passes all year.

This guy could make 2 catches and have 2 carries per game and be a huge upgrade. In fact, his mere presence forcing the departure of 1 of the aforementioned QBs is an upgrade all by itself.

I aploogize -- I know, I dorked up the read on your original,.... My fault,... I was thinking from this point forward,...what Quinn does (I could care less except he's in the AFC) vs. what Hillis does this year.

I agree 100%. I never went out of my way to watch a Denver game but Hillis got some hands on him. I really like that catch in the video he made down field running behind 2 defenders. DA and BQ couldnt have made that pass. DA would have threw a bullet over his head and BQ wouldnt have even looked in his direction.

Crennel use to always say that Harrison needed to block better to be a 3rd down back. I thought he did just fine in his limited oppurtunities. Hillis could be a beast of a blocker too.

I want to see this guy going up the middle with Vickers leading him. Vickers will pancake the first guy, and Hillis looks pretty good at getting through his first tackler.

That would work, though I would rather Vickers be on the bench, replaced by a wideout and send the TE in motion out wide taking a backer or safety with him.

You would force a lot of 1 on 1 coverage outside or force teams in to a nickel....Hillis creates a problem.....get small, he can mow you over....stay big, you are in man on man on the outside and covering with defenders who probably can't match-up speed wise..

Agreed... and it got me to thinking...

This could be a very nice pickup for several reasons:

1. Dude certainly carries some attitude with him when he gets the ball. After years of hearing guys like Joey Porter say stuff like ""the Browns are soft..." or Ray Lewis: "We ain't worried about them. We're in a different class..." it's nice to see a player who comes to the party with some weight in his ass ... and this guy seems to come by it naturally. That's a BIG plus. This the AFCN, yo... "Badass Alley." Come strapped, or stay at home- on ya Momma's couch.

2. The only consistent knock I ever heard about Jerome Harrison assuming an every-down back role was his durability. Scratch that as a concern. He now can split carries with a guy who makes D's NOT want to tackle. Just think- how many highlight clips could JH make in a year, playing against a beat-up, tired team? Shared carries keeps both backs fresh, and all D's worn out.

3. This kind of running is old-school Browns- all the way. Smash a guy in the mouth, and make him wish he worked in an office- for his father-in-law. It's the kind of running that makes even a hardass LB stop wanting to tackle at about 2:58 in the 3rd quarter. It's the perfect kind of running you want to rely on when the calendar moves beyond Nov.1. When winds average 30mph at CBS. When the field gets shortened because of weather. When tacklers can't find their footing because they must read&react, but Your Boy knows exactly where he wants to go.

4. Hands like a receiving TE. Endless possibilities, countless plays to be designed.

5. And ... he blocks, too.

As long as this kid stays healthy, I can't see any downside to him being here. Hell.... he's the exact kind of player the Browns used to have at most positions... back when the Browns were actually used as a model for the league to emulate.

After reading Broncos fanposts about Hillis' departure, seeing the vids of his play, and projecting how he might be used.... I'm thinking: "Brady Who?"

Hillis: polished production... pre-packaged.
Quinn: "perpetual potential."

I'm very cool with this deal. On one hand, it seems that our team has gained some quality, reliable O production. On the other hand, it seems to have shipped out a player who- for whatever reason(s)- never really made a strong case for himself with his given opportunities.

As I see it, we get immediate impact, while the Broncos get a backup/ reclamation project.

and... we also get 2 more picks.

yeah... us.

The Browns. The same guys who only had 4 picks (!) when Mangini arrived.

IMHO, the biggest bang Brady Quinn ever gave us was the bang we received in exchange for his (potential) services.

Nice video - thanks for that, erik. Hillis seems to have a throwback mentality.... guy looks like a straight-ahead old-school smasher.
