NFL draft's first round moves to Thursday night for 2010
National Football League

Ben Liebenberg / NFL.com
The NFL's 75th draft will undergo a major change, shifting back two days to be held in primetime.

Date and time breakdown for 2010 NFL Draft
Date Time*
Round 1 Thursday, April 22 7:30-11 p.m. ET
Rounds 2-3 Friday, April 23 6-11 p.m. ET
Rounds 4-7 Saturday, April 24 10 a.m.-6 p.m. ET
* Approximate end times
The NFL draft will kick off in prime time for the first time in 2010, it was announced Thursday. The first round of the 2010 NFL Draft will start on Thursday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. ET, with the second and third rounds on Friday, April 23 at 6 p.m. ET, followed by Rounds 4-7 on Saturday, April 24 at 10 a.m. ET.

The draft will continue to be televised by ESPN and NFL Network. The 2010 NFL Draft -- the 75th draft in NFL history -- again will be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

"We continue to look for ways to make the draft more accessible to more fans," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said. "Moving the first round to prime time on Thursday night will make the first round of the draft available to fans on what is typically the most-watched night of television."

The 2009 NFL Draft (Saturday, April 25-Sunday, April 26) drew a record 39 million viewers on NFL Network, ESPN and ESPN2. Total NFL Draft viewership increased 66 percent from 2001 to 2009 (from 23.5 million to 39 million).

The first round of last year's draft on ESPN and NFL Network drew a combined average of 6.3 million viewers, topping all basketball, hockey and baseball games that weekend.

The NFL draft was a Saturday-Sunday event from 1995 to 2009. It took place on Sunday and Monday from 1988 to 1994, and prior to 1988, it was held on one or two weekdays

Booooooo, absolutely hate the fact they moved the draft to Thursday and Friday night, with the late rounds on Saturday.

So much harder to have a draft party like I always plan to do. I actually had to take vacation time to watch this year.

seems they are trying to attract the " casual" football fan that would prolly think that the draft process was boring. My SO, who is a casual football fan and a Steeler fan to boot , thinks the combine is boring.I'll bet it will be the same thing for the draft.
If you have a draft party, how many of your friends will actually be willing to take vacation time to attend?

I hope the NFL switches back after this year.

I like the move, ( This Year)....Our camp ground opens that weekend, actually friday 23rd, so I can actually watch the 1st round thursday night and listen to it the rest of the weekend, My wife would kill me if the camper opened and I stayed at home watching the draft.....Really I always have a hard time staying indoor watching TV this time of year, bye having it on at night, I can drink a few and kick back with something to watch.

This is not about the fans. It is about more $$$$$ for the NFL.

Bottomline was that people got together for the draft and made a whole Saturday out of it. Now with it being during the week it is definitely less convenient. If I have a draft party on saturday it is for the lower level rounds. And on Thursday, most people have to work on Friday. Not cool Zeus.

I also hate this move. I loved going down to CBS to watch the draft, hang out at the stadium, etc. etc.

Now it's stay at home and watch assuming it won't conflict w/ my other shows being recorded. If it is, might have to head to the bar to watch or just catch it online.

Really, really hate this move.

My problem with this move is that it effectively kills the draft party. Cant have much of a party Thursday night when I have to work on Friday, same goes my with my friends. Bit of a downer, on the other hand it does start sooner, but would rather have the weekend to bum around and have a Draft party.

Exactly, kills the party.

I took off work these 2 days, actually. But my wife has to be up early, my daughter has preschool early, so I'm sure my wife wouldn't be too happy with a bunch of people over the house eating and drinking and being loud.

Booooo, NFL. Boooooo.

I hate it too.

I'd be all for a Friday night start with the first round, 2nd-3rd round starting at 3 PM on Saturday and the rest of the rounds on Sunday, but Thursday night is ridiculous. (Unless I were still in college, but alas, I'm not)

I had to work last year's draft, I took a radio in and was combing the internet with my phone the rest of time. I was still living in Cleveland at this time, and got very little work done. It was awful, I hope to never have to work during a draft again.

Outside of dragging this on and on, why did they decide to have the draft over several days instead of just getting it done?

Must be a money maker.....

Yeah, people watching for two days in prime-time is better than people watching two days in non prime-time.

Also, for all the people who usually go to draft parties. The NFL doesn't care. Now instead of 100 people watching the draft in one place those 100 people will all have there individual TV's set to the NFL. That means higher ratings.

The bottom line is nobody likes the new draft format. But we will all still watch it.

I actually like the new format. There's usually always something going on my weekends...so a Thursday and Friday night will let me watch.

As far as draft parties, keep throwing them. Who care if the first few rounds are over. Ultimately, it comes down to eating chili, drinking with your buds, and talking over the players picked. After 8-10 beers, you'll think it was the first round again.

With a huge rating dropoff on Friday night. The casual fan who doesnt spend the time to learn who the college players are probably dont care about the second round on.

More money to the NFL and less money for the local revenue. Goodell could probably care less on how much money small market (Pittsburgh,Buffalo) local revenues lose. The local Damons down the road use to be packed 2 hours before the draft started. But maybe this will bring fans out for a 3 day span, avoiding sport bars from getting jammed packed, and spread the fans out which might help the local revenue.

Im sure the lessor known players will still get the fees for showing up to Browns Backers draft parties on Saturdays. It will also allow the first and second round picks to be available to these parties. But those will be the owners parties. Everyone will be waiting for their turn in the photo op instead of watching the draft. Im sure the owners love the move.

I hate the move. Draft parties are what some of us die-hards look forward too. A time where we can talk football, not just about the Browns, and not get yelled at work or by the wives. If you a have a wife thats not a football fan, you better have a man cave for 3 days.

Im also wondering if this is bad timing for the owners. There is no CBA and the NFL will be bringing in more money from the draft. But Im sure Goodell will do his best from letting the players union see these profits.
