That's the same with any group, King.

I'll be the controversial guy and bring this up I guess.

African Americans want equality, yet they want to have the United Negro College Fund. They want to have the NAACP.

Gays want equality, but they also want to have National Gay Pride Parades.

This is for EVERY group of people. Not saying all people in every group is this way, but a lot are. They want equality, and segregation, depending on which one benefits them at the time.

Not all of us want parades. I actually think it hurts more than helps.

*I should note, that I don't disagree with any of the groups. A lot of the members do it for the right reason. The NAACP was started for a good cause, and many of the members still do it for a good cause. However, there are a lot that do it because they want the special attention.

Same with the gay pride parades. A lot still do it for the right reason, to try to gain the tolerance of people. However, there's a lot that do it for the special attention.

Which is a great point that people overlook in the rush for political correctness...people tend to stereotype what people want through their own filters. I know gay people (and hetero) who want nothing to do with normal society. They would be offended by the proposal on their behalf by someone else saying what 'they' want. In this instance 99% of the people in discussion made a choice for some reason...and the people on this thread are calling them all wrong without any idea why they made that choice. Even though that contradicts what they say they are fine with because it fits their own filters on this occasion.

I have no problem with anyone protecting their rights, in this case I think she won the right to attend the prom but found out she alienated herself further in the process.

Should she be treated differently because she is a lesbian...even though she has been invited to the 'Lesbian Prom'? Oh, the National Center for Lesbian Rights holds a prom specifically for lesbians and has invited her. Win the battle to attend the prom 'for everyone' and also be invited to a prom specifically for your own niche group. While complaining that those people who held a 'special' party are wrong. Shouldn't everyone be able to have their cake and eat it too?

As a parent my heart goes out to the girl, she has a difficult road to walk and some of it is by her own choices. Which isn't all that different than 90% of the kids out there...just different reasons.

What is a lebsian?

It's too bad there are crappy people in the world who go out of their way to make other people's lives just a little bit worse. I've never been one to make a scene about things, I just get away from the ass clowns and move on by finding better people to be around. Some people want to make statements in louder ways than others. I find being subtle in real life works better, but that's just me.

I see people on this thread lecturing other people about how they debate and then being just as disruptive in the commentary by making personal attacks and name calling. It always amuses me.

I don't know the exact story - but I believe Jules had a bucket incident at one time. On the head? Foot? Don't remember. Someone will explain in detail I would guess.

some resolution on this case:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100720/ap_on_re_us/us_lesbian_prom_date

Quote:

JACKSON, Miss. – A rural school district that canceled its prom rather than allow a lesbian student to attend with her girlfriend has agreed to pay $35,000 to settle a discrimination lawsuit the ACLU filed on her behalf.

The district also agreed to follow a non-discrimination policy as part of the settlement, though it argues such a policy was already in place.

Constance McMillen, 18, said the victory came at the price of her being shunned in her small hometown of Fulton.

"I knew it was a good cause, but sometimes it really got to me. I knew it would change things for others in the future and I kept going and I kept pushing," McMillen said in an interview Tuesday.

The flap started in March when McMillen challenged the Itawamba County School District's rules banning prom dates of the same gender and allowing only male students to wear tuxedos. The district responded by canceling its prom, prompting the ACLU to file suit claiming the teen's rights had been violated and demanding the prom be reinstated.

U.S. District Judge Glen H. Davidson refused to make school officials hold the prom, but he said in a March 23 ruling that the district had violated McMillen's rights.

The district later announced parents would sponsor another prom chaperoned by school officials. But ACLU lawyers claimed the event was a "sham prom" attended by only about 10 students, while most of McMillen's classmates partied at a private event elsewhere, a claim the school denied. McMillen's suit also says she's been harassed for her stand against the school's policy.

McMillen's lawyers filed notice Monday in U.S. District Court to accept a judgment offer from the Itawamba County School District that will pay $35,000, plus attorney's fees. As part of the agreement, the school district also said it would follow a policy not to discriminate based on sexual orientation in any educational or extracurricular activities or allow harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

School officials contend that their agreement to follow the non-discrimination policy merely reaffirms inclusiveness rules the district already had, said school board attorney Michele Floyd. She said the district's insurance company will pay McMillen.

District officials said in the settlement offer that they didn't believe they violated McMillen's rights.

The ACLU, however, contends that if the district really had such an inclusiveness policy all along, it wouldn't have banned same-sex prom dates. It also said the district is the first in Mississippi to implement a policy banning discrimination and harassment on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Ben Griffith, the attorney who represented the district in the suit, said school officials are focused on preparing for the upcoming fall semester and wanted to avoid protracted litigation.

"The defendants have consistently taken the position throughout this case that their actions and conduct at all times have been constitutional and lawful in every respect," Griffith said.

Christine P. Sun, an ACLU lawyer, said the case has "inspired countless other people around the world to stand up for what's right."

McMillen has moved to Memphis, Tenn., where she plans to attend Southwest Community College in the spring, majoring in psychology. She said she'll use the settlement money for her college education.

She eventually withdrew from Itawamba Agricultural High School and finished her senior year at a school in Jackson, Miss.

Eliza Byard, executive director of GLSEN: The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, said only 12 states and the District of Columbia require school district to have policies recognizing sexual orientation and gender identity.

McMillen's case gained national attention and she was featured on talk shows and served as a grand marshal for New York's Gay Pride Parade, among other events. She also visited the White House.

Sun said the ACLU had represented other students in similar cases around the country, but none had garnered as much attention as McMillen's legal battle.

McMillen said she thinks the case resonated with so many people because "prom is a common theme and everyone knows how it feels to want to go to prom. With my story, even if people didn't agree with being gay, they understood. They figured out how cruel some people can be."

Funny. If they had followed their so-called existing policy, they wouldn't be forced to pay $35,000.

Lesson learned I suppose (maybe).

Glad to see they got a wrist slap, and she got some cash to help pay for an education. Well-deserved, considering what she went through because of the small minds of others.

Well, I think she got all of it. Though they never really mentioned it in the article, but I thought the ACLU took the case for free. The school district had to pay the $35k plus attorney's fees. Which to me sounds like the ACLU sued on behalf of the student for two different amounts of money. The students settlement then their fees. Right?

That isn't the point DC and you know it. For the reasons I outlined in last night's post, I say "good for her".

The school officials embarrassed her, then scheduled the "real" prom while outright lying to her about it. I would not have blamed her for feeling like an outcast, which is especially troubling in this case because in some ways I consider school officials to be community leaders who helped set the tone for the future - for obvious reasons.
I'm no bleeding heart but the entire situation reeked from the get-go.

This school makes me sick.

Instead of being open to others, they decide that they will punish somebody for being homosexual.

I am glad this girl won. Personally, though, I think the administration of the school needs to be replaced.

Why do they need to be replaced? They are just bigots... Hell if they can just admit they were wrong and tell how they learned something from it the federal govenrment will create new high rankings jobs for them.. at least that's what they did for Shirley Sherrod...

Yes, they are bigots. They decide to ridicule a homosexual student because they don't like homosexuals in front of the entire school and in front of national television. If you make this a race issues instead of a homosexual issue, they would be dismissed.

But, since it is a homosexual student that they demeaned, it's all good and dandy. No, that is no excuse. These people deliberately demaned her because of her sexuality. They need to resign or be dismissed.

You still don't understand what happened to Sherrod because you are inable to comprehend the facts. Sherrod did nothing wrong. She was fired for doing nothing wrong. These school administrators admonished a student because she is a Lesbian. Yet, you don't see what is wrong with that. You think a simple "I'm sorry" will make things all better.

You say "I'm sorry" when you step on someone's foot or something like that. You don't say "I'm sorry" for getting the person and punishing them for their sexuality. Just becuase they aren't a heterosexual.
