jc..
OK, As an experience emergency generator owner (thank the wonderful hurricanes, and not the Miami U kind either), I can give you some insight here.
1. DO NOT run a generator in an enclosed space, not even the garage. The fumes will build up and even though you wont be in the room, sooner or later, you have to go in there to fill it up or turn it off, and those fumes can and will leak into the house, especially if your using extension cords.
2. A Power Transfer switch is the nicest way to hook them up, this gives you the ability to run power into certain areas of your house. You still have to be conscience of how much electricity your using, but it is nice to walk into a room and flip on a light switch rather than walk around with flashlights.
3. When buying a generator, you want to consider how much power you need. Refrigerators take 800-900 watts to run, and 1200-1500 to start up (known as the surge requirement), lamps are 60-100, TVs are typically 300-600, computers are 800-1000(PC and monitor), etc. You usually, only want to figure NEEDS (ie: Fridge(s), TV, a few lights...and in your all case, a small heater.)
A/C units and Central electric heating take HUGE amounts of power and will not run off your typical portable generator. Electric Hot Water tanks take 4000-5000 watts. Now gas or oil fired only require power to run the burners and fans, which is considerably less than electric, and I'm thinking a burner is around 400-500 watts typically (haven't worked for RW Becket for almost 20 years, so I forget), then add the blower motor to move the air, not sure what they use, sorry.
Most people trying to stay budget conscience want 3000-5000 watt generators. I have a 5500 watt(6500 surge) which I run through a Power Transfer Switch. This will run my 2 fridges, a couple TVs and ceiling fans and some lights without a problem. It will even run my Electric Hot Water heater, but that must be run alone til the water is heated, then switch power back to the rest of the house (doing this after work, left us with warm enough water for showers in the morning)
Generators are great tools to have around for emergencies, but use them wisely, and safely. It never fails that someone dies from the fumes because they used their generator in an enclosed space, after a hurricane or emergency.
You need to run the generator for a few minutes every couple months after the first time you use it to keep it running well and keep the engine in good shape, so it will be ready for use in the next emergency.
Also, when buying a generator, consider buying a lock and chain, in desperate times, people will try to steal your generator while it is running on your back porch or wherever, so keep it chained up when it's outside.
If your older or have difficulty with things like mowers, you may want to consider an electric start generator as well, but make sure to keep the battery charged or it defeats the purpose.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

They've been small flakes up to quarter sized. There are blizzard warning in Indiana just west of our northern Miami Valley counties. And, we are now due for that freezing rain I didn't want. Fantastic.

we have a Blizzard Warning here west of I-75, we have only gotten maybe a inch of snow it's still coming down and blowing like the dickens, but really it's not bad at all, Heck I've sat in tree stands on worse days, Ok, that dosent say much for me, but really it just another basic Ohio Snow storm...
drive carefully everybody, let your car warm up before driving, and brush the snow off your windows before driving around..saw a lady backing up out of the as station this morning, she cleaned her front winshield but all others were snowy.

Do you mean NE of Greenville? Darke County is right next to Indiana. I'm just not sure which little square Shelby County is.

You live around the Sidney area 66? I live in Bellefontaine now. We'll have to hook up some time.
Logan County for all you "map checkers".

Getting hammered in Chicago - especially down south (Naperville and further south). I am up north - and was supposed to see customers all day with my dealer, but we cancelled. Its supposed to snow all day and tonite, and winds are gusting to 40 mph. They still want me to come downtown for dinner at Fogo de Chao, but I doubt that will happen... I leave for vaca Saturday - this stuff better not delay my trip.

The forecasters here in northern Ohio have told us to prepare for 7 inches.

I was supposed to be in SEern Ohio this afternoon for a meeting, but I'm taking a personal day today instead. The meeting was scheduled to end around 2, by the time I got back home it'd be 4 at the earliest, and it wouldn't have been a fun drive, so I decided to simply reschedule for later. Actually, the snow looks pretty nice... looking out my balcony, in my slippers, with a cup of coffee in hand.

Yup...I haven't worked since Jan. 28th. Was going to go in last night, but the forecast was ugly so I decided to stay home. It's nice being in a nice warm house in your slippers sipping on cocoa. I know I'm enjoying it.

Actually, I just got better news, in that my office is closing for the day, so it will only cost me two hours of personal time. Well worth it if you ask me.

That seems like a fair estimate. I think we're supposed to get the worst of this storm which is cool by me b/c I want them to close OSU tomorrow. It's my last chance ever for a snow day. I heard we're going to get 5-9 more inches through the day.

Supposed to get 5-10 inches by evening rush hour, and another 5-8 tonight in Kent. Still have classes though.

I called my ex and she said the county workers have been told to go home. It's gonna be interesting. Columbus does not have a good track record of getting the streets cleared.
