Safe Winter Driving
The National Safety Council offers the Defensive Driving Course in many cities. The following advice is reprinted from pages 35 and 36 of the guide.

Winter driving can be inconvenient, annoying, even infuriating. But you can offset those aggravations and minimize the special risks of winter driving.

Getting started
Here are some routine precautions to help you avoid starting problems:

Get an engine tune-up in the fall. Switch to winter-weight oil if you aren't already using all-season oil. Be sure all lights are in good working order. Have the brakes adjusted.
Battery and voltage regulator should be checked. Make sure battery connections are good.
If the battery terminal posts seem to be building up a layer of corrosion, clean them with a paste of baking soda and water. Let it foam, and then rinse with water. Apply a thin film of petroleum jelly to the terminal posts to prevent corrosion, and reconnect.
Be sure all fluids are at proper levels. Antifreeze should not only be strong enough to prevent freezing, but fresh enough to prevent rust.
Make sure wiper blades are cleaning properly. Consider changing to winter wiper blades, which are made for driving in snow. They are covered with a rubber boot to keep moisture away from working parts of the blade.
Don't idle a cold vehicle's engine for along time to warm it up - it could harm the engine. The right way to warm up a vehicle is to drive it.

Equipment and supplies
Here's what you'll want to have on hand, especially in an emergency:

Snow shovel.
Scraper with a brush on one end.
Tow chain or strap.
Tire chains.
Flashlight (with extra batteries).
Abrasive material (cat litter, sand, salt, or traction mats).
Jumper cables.
Warning device (flares or reflective triangles).
Brightly colored cloth to signal for help.
Empty coffee or similar type can containing candles, matches (in a water tight containter) or a lighter, high-energy food (chocolate or dried fruit, for example).
Sleeping bags or blankets, ski caps, and mittens.
First-aid supplies.
Compass.

Getting Unstuck
If you should find yourself stuck, here's what to do:

Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way. Keep a light touch on the gas, and ease forward. Don't spin you wheels - you'll just dig in deeper.
Rocking the vehicle is another way to get unstuck. (Check your owner's manual first - it can damage the transmission on some vehicles.) Shift from forward to reverse, and back again. Each time you're in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going.
Front-wheel drive vehicles, snow tires should be on the front - the driving axle - for better traction in mud or snow.

If You Get Stranded...
You may feel helpless, stuck in the snow in a lonely place - but there are things you can do to survive until help reaches you.
Stay in the vehicle. Don't wander and get lost or frostbitten.
Run the engine for heat about once every hour, or every half hour in severe cold. Clean snow from around the end of the tail pipe to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. For extra heat, burn a candle inside a coffee can - but don't set the can on fabric. Make sure the vehicle is NOT air tight, by opening a window a little.
Clear outide heater vents. That's the grill under the windshield.
Avoid alcohol. It lowers body temperature and will cause you to become drowsy.
Leave one window cracked open. Freezing winds and driving, wet snow can quickly seal a vehicle.
Signal to other motorists that you're stranded by using flares or flashlights, or by tying a piece of brightly colored cloth to the radio antenna.

Winter Driving

Advice from the New York state Department of Motor Vehicles Driver's Manual
Winter is the most difficult driving season. Not only do you have snow and ice to deal with, but there are fewer hours of daylight as well.
Before winter weather arrives, make sure your vehicle is in good condition, especially the tires. Make sure you've got good snow tires, and put them on early. Try not to get caught without them in the first snowfall. Never combine radial and non-radial tires on the same vehicle. On front-wheel drive cars, it's best to put snow tires or "all-season" tires on all four wheels, not just the front.
If you must drive, clear the ice and snow from your vehicle, all windows and windshield wipers. Be sure the windshield washer reservoir is adequately filled with a freeze-resistant cleaning solution.
Drive slowly. Even if your vehicle has good traction in ice and snow, other drivers will be traveling cautiously. Don't distrupt the flow of traffic by driving faster than everyone else.
In a rear-wheel drive vehicle, you can usually feel a loss of traction or the beginning of a skid. There may be no such warning in a front-wheel drive, however. Front-wheel drives do handle better in ice and snow, but they do not have flawless traction, and skids can occur unexpectedly. Don't let the better feel and handling of a front-wheel drive car cause you to drive faster than you should.
Despite a popular misconception, the best approach to recovering from a skid is the same for foth front and rear-wheel drive vehicles. If your rear wheels start to skid:

Turn the steering wheel in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels are sliding left, steer left. If they're sliding right, steer right.
If your rear wheels start sliding the other way as you recover, ease the steering wheel toward that side. You might have to steer left and right a few times to get your vehicle completely under control.
If your car has an anti-lock braking system (ABS), keep your foot on the pedal. If not, pump the pedal gently, pumping more rapidly as your car slows down. Braking hard with non-anti-lock brakes will make the skid worse.

If your front wheels skid:

Take your foot off the gas and shift to neutral, but don't try to steer immediately.
As the wheels skid sideways, they will slow the vehicle and traction will return. As it does, steer in the direction you want to go. Then put the transmission in "drive" or release the clutch, and accelerate gently.
To avoid skids, brake carefully and gently on snow or ice. "Squeeze" your brakes in slow, steady strokes. Allow the wheels to keep rolling. If they start to lock up, ease off the brake pedal. As you slow down, you may also want to shift into a lower gear.
When sleet, freezing rain or snow start to fall, remember that bridges, ramps, and overpasses are likely to freeze first. Also be aware that slippery spots may still remain after road crews have cleared the highways.

The information above was reprinted from pages 76-78 of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Driver's Manual.

I don't mind shoveling snow so much but this ice, it's about impossible with this f'n plastic shovel I have.

Looks like I'll actually have to warm my car up in the morning and scrape the windows for once. As it will have to sit at the bottom of the driveway tonight, no shot of getting up the hill and in the garage.

Just did the drive from downtown to Strongsville on 71s - 55 minutes for a 20 minute drive. Rush hour will be fun for most Clevelanders. 3 wrecks, 2 involving SUV's and a car that flew off the side of the road, way down a hill.

Hey bro, I just meandered out for my daily dinner at the Red Chimney (E.65th & Fleet Ave.) and the traffic on I-77 South was moving 25-30 mph. I saw this from E.49th St. as it runs parralel to I-77 from Pershing to Fleet. On the way back, it was much slower, and those that didn't want to get caught in the jam on 77 bailed for Broadway. Broadway was bumper to bumper going out of town, but I zipped right on by (as I live very close to I-77 just south of downtown) on my way home.

I can see that more accidents will be in store, for I was going 25 on E.49th (speed limit is 25) and someone went blazing past me (no passing zone on that street) as if I was standing still.

Patience and common sense, you'll get to where you need to be in one piece.

It is now 73* but the sun has hidden behind a few puffy clouds. It is supposed to be in the low 60s for a high on Friday and Saturday. Perish the thought.

*worrying about hubby driving home from Bedford to Cuyahoga Falls*

Business was way down at the restaurant. One of my regular waitresses came up to me at 3:45 p.m. and said "I've been here since 11 this morning and I've made $8 in tips."

Rt. 8 can be tricky, if you talk to hubby, you might want to tell him to opt for Olde 8 to 303 then to Akron-Cleveland Rd. I've been in backups heading South on Rt.8 and busted a move at Twinsburg Rd. to Olde 8 and zipped right on to my destinations in the Falls or Akron.

I was just thinking of that day I saw you on I-77 in Akron...what a coincidene and happenchance that was!

He usually comes home that way anyway to avoid that whole mess of 271 and RTE 8. Makes his way to Olde 8 and comes home. Sure, the roads won't be cleared off, but he'll avoid the MO-rons!

Anytime I go past that spot on 77 that we ran into each, I think about that day.

In all of my experiences on Olde 8 (used to work in Sagamore Hills and Northfield) the localities keep those roads plowed and treated quite regularly during storms. He should make it home ok...seems like the MOrons are stuck on Ohio SR 8, and never wander to Olde 8.

Yeah Gordy, they shut Alliance down around 4pm today. Calling for freezing rain with the snow.

If this keeps up and they keep us at a level 4 hopefully it goes until Thursday for us down here.

Okay,help me out here?
You did KNOW we were getting a major snow storm with a strong possibility of ice accompanying it,right?

Okay,just follow me here please....................................

Didn't want assheads work to close, cause you'd be stuck home with asshead.

Glad asshead went to work, but worried about your truck,so you kinda "didn't" want asshead to go to work?

Then, your truck makes it home safe and sound (remember, you were worried about that)

But now that it's home safe and sound, that's "kinda good"?

And women wonder why we DON'T understand what the hell they're REALLY trying to say???????????

We still don't have much snow, but the drifting is pretty bad. In my second driveway I have a drift all of 5 ft. high, probably 15 ft. wide.........I made it through going IN, but then I turned around and got the hummer stuck trying to bust a new hole through it going out........Had to have my neighbor pull me out.

After that we went up town to eat, then over to the in laws (wife's sister). I took the kids "drift busting" through their yard and field....what a blast!!!

Supposedly we're going to get more snow, but with the wind here, I don't know if we'll be able to tell. I can still see the grass in about 1/2 my yard.

I left the office on Chagrin Blvd at a little after 4pm, I got home (which is normally a 20 minute drive at most) at a little past 6:30.

I-480 was a freaking mess. Heck, just getting to 480 from Chagrin on Warrensville Center took an hour.

Had to shovel my deck so that I could open the back door to let the dogs out

Man, my wife is upset, at me! In my defense, the wind doesn't normally come from the direction it is now........but......we need a new door.

Yea I noticed that too, I opened my window a little bit today because the heat in our apartment wont turn down...and it started snowing in my room. Normally the wind comes from the other way, I've never had to worry about weather comin in the window.

WOW, the roads out here are TERRIBLE. I have never been more scared driving in snow like I was tonight. There was at least 6-8 inches of snow on both 306 and Lakeshore, 2 major roads in my area. And then to top it all off the dick apartment plow guy hasn't been here all day so my car got stuck in the middle of the parking lot in about 2 feet of snow I had to shovel myself out and out of the way, grrrr.

I better not have class tomorrow

You guys in Cleveland are so luck, you get the lake effect. I would love to have enough bad weather to close my college tomorrow, because I have a test in Civilization II.

I just got out of a quiz in my strategic management class. They canceled classes after 130 and my professors are canceling tomorrow. I love OSU. Digging my car out on the other hand will be a fun task Last time it snowed like this my windshield wipers were stuck for a week.
