I am reminded of the adage .... "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt".
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.
And Dan Quayle once spelled potato with an e at the end...
Does that make me a moron for voting for George HW Bush and Quayle as VP?
This dude is an idiot,, no question, but that doesn't make those that voted for him morons... if that were the case, every single time a politician goes off the reservation, those that voted for him/her would be morons.
And there are plenty of them to fill up both parties.. which would make everyone in America that votes, including you and me, morons......

That said....I served on Guam...3 years actually and if anyone gets the chance to go visit our little populated island, I HIGHLY recommend it. Talafofo falls is incredible...The village of Piti is as friendly as you can get. Two thumbs up. =)

Oh sure ... it's nice now .... but just wait till it capsizes .......

Daman....don't even try to defend this doofus or the people who elected him. A spelling error and listening to this goof talk abot how big a island is and worried about it tipping over is crazy. Tell me this....are you happy this goof is voting on anything???
I give credit to the Admiral....he was respectful the entire time and didn't break out laughing....had it been me, I would have been laughing as I walked over there and slapped the guy in the face just to see if he was serious.
No wonder this country is screwed up....I wanted to say something else to be honest.....whoever voted for this goof should be banned from the polls.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
You're going to make a big deal out of this? He clearly was concerned about environmental impact (water shortages/overloaded sewers as the article says). The island capsizing thing was nothing more than a dumb, not funny joke (if you watch closely at 1:30 in the video, after he makes that comment, he has a smirk), and he says right after that, "I'm concerned about the environment." In the article it states that at the peak of construction, the island could go from 180,000 people to 260,000 people, so concerns about stressing out the local infrastructure seem to be valid.

You're serious....lol.
Whatever man....good luck to ya.

Here's another piece of work.It was a while ago that this happened, but just goes to show you who is running this country.Watch the 2 people sitting next to her.
You think a guy graduates law school, practices law for 25 years, and serves as a judge without knowing that an island can't tip over? Unless this guy has said stuff like this repeatedly for years and years, I don't think one statement that can be interpreted as a really stupid metaphor is grounds for you to crucify him for it.
Check the youtube link.....and this moron votes on public policy....what a friggen joke....a friggen moron elected by morons.
And it's statements like this that those Morons can't stand people like you. Sure, your entitled to an opinion, but everyone has the right to Vote, regardless if you think they are uneducated Morons.
BTW - I have no idea who the guy is, other then what I read in the article, as I'm sure he didn't mean it the way it came out, unless he truly thinks a land mass can actually capsize, then we've got bigger problems.
Rep. Hank Johnson: Guam could 'tip over and capsize'
Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) is afraid that the U.S. Territory of Guam is going to "tip over and capsize" due to overpopulation.
Johnson expressed his worries during a House Armed Services Committee hearing on the defense budget Thursday.
Addressing Adm. Robert Willard, who commands the Navy's Pacific Fleet, Johnson made a tippy motion with his hands and said sternly, "My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize."
Willard paused and said: "We don't anticipate that."
Like other islands, Guam is attached to the sea floor, which makes it extremely unlikely that it will tip over, even if there are lots and lots of people on it. Guam is 30 miles long and up to 9 miles wide in certain spots, with a population of 175,000 civilians. The military is proposing the addition of 8,000 U.S. servicemembers and their families.
Reached for comment, a spokesman for Johnson said the lawmaker had visited Guam, and his concern was that the influx of military personnel would overwhelm the island's infrastructure and ecosystem.
ALSO, I don't know if anyone did the math, but 8,000 service members AND their families adds up to about 24,000 total additional people added to the current population...a significant increase when one takes a look at the infrastructure requriements and needed improvements to upgrade Guam to the level necessary to support 24,000 additional Americans.
And who is going to pay for the necessary improvements?...US taxpayers.
We already have Anderson AFB located on Guam...just a bit of military humor..my guess is Air Force big shots have been bragging to the Marine big shots about how great the duty is on Guam and some Marine bigshot decided the Pentagon could just build the a Marine base on Guam so they could enjoy the duty too.
Not all the residents of Guam are happy about the idea of adding 8k marines... web page
One last thing...I heard that Rep. Johnson confirmed his comment was a joke...I thought it was a joke from the moment he made the comment...I guess "some" did not recognize that it was a joke...obviously, that point went right over the heads of a few of our more radical board members...lol...
Finding these short clips where politicians screw up can be funny. If it's purely for fun, its not a big deal. What concerns me is when short clips are used as an attempt at political discourse. Instead of discussing issues and the data supporting one side of issues or the other, we find cute clips of screw ups that serve as evidence that the other side is clearly incompetent.
Also of note, I'm sure if we had YouTube and cell phone cameras all the way back to the Founding Fathers, stuff like this would have happened to every president/public official; these officials are human just like you and me. My profession is centered on public speaking; I've seen Nobel Prize winners speak, and believe me, everyone screws up sooner or later. It doesn't mean that person is an idiot.

Ok.. if I look at the short clips, I conclude that they are screw ups. if I look at full length speeches, I conclude that they are screw ups. If I look at their positions on issues, I conclude that they are screw ups. If I look at their voting records, I conclude that they are screw ups. What else would you like me to look at?
Quote: How about we return the day when only Property owners could vote or you have to show where you filed tax's ???
It still strikes me as odd in this country that I need a license to prove I'm qualified to drive a scooter or own a dog but I can have as many kids as I want or vote or run for office without proving anything to anybody... Sure does seem kind of backwards.

My point was that this thread was started based on a short YouTube video. A congressman said a pretty dumb couple of sentences, and was called incompetent and a moron for it, without any other evidence. Full length speeches, positions on issues, and/or voting records were not used, and since they weren't used as evidence, I can only assume they were never looked at.
Maybe this guy is every bit as dumb as the statement he made; but that one statement alone isn't enough to crucify him. I'm sure you have said something dumb in your life; I know I have. Doesn't mean you are a moron.
IMO, if you have looked at voting records, stances on issues, etc., and come to the conclusion that someone is a moron, that is fine with me. But when the argument is "whoa, look at how stupid that one statement was, he/she is a moron," is just sounds like bashing for the sake of bashing. People are still entitled to this opinion, but it rings sort of hollow when it's based on one statement rather than a body of evidence.

maybe he's a swell guy.
I am sorry if I offended anyone and think it is best I just stay out of this sort of thing....I don't like the tones on the board when discussing politics, including my own.

I hope you don't mind DC, but I think that deserves a cut and paste. "Jackpot, brother" indeed.
"Confronted by an angry Tea Partier with a camera Thursday, an Illinois congressman said in front of several constituents at a town hall that he doesn't care whether the new health care law violates the Constitution, as some critics have claimed.
In a video posted on You Tube, Adam Sharp of the St. Louis Tea Party asked Rep. Phil Hare which part of the Constitution authorizes the government to mandate that all Americans buy a private product such as health insurance. The Illinois Democrat replied, "I don't worry about the Constitution on this."
"Jackpot, brother," Sharp said.
Hare cringed in disgust and said, "Oh please. What I care more about, I care more about the people dying every day who don't have health care."
"You care more about that than the U.S. Constitution that you swore to uphold?" Sharp shouted back.
"I believe it says we have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," Hare countered.
When an observer pointed out that those words come from the Declaration of Independence, Hare said, "Doesn't matter to me. Either one."
When Sharp pressed Hare to answer where in the Constitution government is granted the authority to mandate the purchase of health insurance, Hare said he didn't know.
"But at the end of the day, I want to bring insurance to every person that lives in this country," Hare said.
Sharp said the law won't do that.
The confrontation was the latest example of Democrats going off message in their sales pitch to Americans of the virtues of the controversial health care law.
Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, said the health care law would address the "maldistribution of income in America."
"Too often, much of late, the last couple three years, the maldistribution of income in America is gone up way too much, the wealthy are getting way, way too wealthy and the middle income class is left behind," Baucus said after the Senate passed a "fix it" bill to make changes to the health care law.
"Wages have not kept up with increased income of the highest income in America," he said. "This legislation will have the effect of addressing that maldistribution of income in America."
