DA to announce decision MondayEmail Print Comments 63Share retweet Associated Press

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- A district attorney in Georgia plans to announce Monday whether charges will be brought in a case of sexual assault accusations against Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Roethlisberger
District Attorney Fred Bright said in a statement Friday he has reviewed all the investigation reports and will hold a news conference to announce a decision.

Milledgeville police Chief Woodrow Blue said Wednesday his department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation had wrapped up their investigation into a 20-year-old college student's claim that the two-time Superbowl champion sexually assaulted her early March 5 at a club in Milledgeville.

Attorneys for both Roethlisberger and the woman did not immediately return calls seeking comment Friday.

It was the second time in a year the two-time Super Bowl champion had been accused of sexual misconduct. Roethlisberger also faces a lawsuit filed in July by a woman who says he raped her in 2008 at a Lake Tahoe hotel and casino, an allegation he denies. Roethlisberger has not been criminally charged in either case and has claimed counter-damages in the lawsuit.

Roethlisberger's lawyer, Ed Garland, has disputed the Georgia assault claim and hired his own team to investigate.

My first thought was "oh, yeah, they're going to charge him." Based on my thought that if they weren't, the DA would just say, today, "no, no charges".

But as I thought about it more - I don't know what the heck they'll do - so I'll wait till monday.

I believe we'll find out whether his case will go to grand jury. If he gets charged, though, that's huge since, I know at least in Ohio, you can indict a ham sandwich.

Sources: Charges won't be broughtEmail Print Comments 119Share102 retweet 174ESPN.com news services

Roethlisberger
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not be charged after an investigation into accusations of sexual assault by a 20-year-old woman in Georgia, sources told ESPN.

Sources confirmed to ESPN's Kelly Naqi that District Attorney Fred Bright will announce on Monday that charges will not be brought against Roethlisberger. Bright said in a statement Friday he has reviewed all the investigation reports and will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. ET Monday.

Milledgeville police Chief Woodrow Blue said Wednesday his department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation had wrapped up their investigation into a 20-year-old college student's claim that Roethlisberger sexually assaulted her early March 5 at a club in Milledgeville.

It was the second time in a year that Roethlisberger has been accused of sexual misconduct. He also faces a lawsuit filed last July by a woman who says he raped her in 2008 at a Lake Tahoe hotel and casino, an allegation he denies. Roethlisberger has not been criminally charged in either case and has claimed counter-damages in the lawsuit.

Roethlisberger did not report to Pittsburgh's offseason workouts last month. The next critical day for players is April 19, when on-field practice starts. Most of the team is expected to be on hand then.

ESPN's Kelly Naqi and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Does what?? Tries to pick up a chick???

I have no love for the guy by any means, but he didn't do anything wrong.....or at least wrong enough to warrant charges if this report is accurate.

No charges against Roethlisberger

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- Authorities in Georgia won't charge Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger after a 20-year-old college student said he sexually assaulted her.

District Attorney Fred Bright made the announcement Monday.

The student had told police that Roethlisberger sexually assaulted her last month at a nightclub in the central Georgia college town of Milledgeville.

Roethlisberger, who is 28, owns a home about 30 miles north of Milledgeville on Lake Oconee.

He also is being sued by a woman who claims he raped her in 2008 at a hotel and casino in Lake Tahoe, an allegation he strongly denies.

Mort reports Ben could be placed in substance-abuse program

Posted by Michael David Smith
April 12, 2010 2:41 PM ET

Following ESPN's coverage of Ocmulgee (Ga.) Judicial Circuit D.A. Fred Bright's press conference, reporter Chris Mortensen suggested that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger could be forced to enter the league's substance-abuse program.

Speaking of Bright's comments, Mortensen said, "You hear him say Ben Roethlisberger provided alcohol to the accuser, the lades in that group. That a bodyguard escorted the young lady, the accuser, down to the bathroom, and then Ben followed her into the bathroom. I think those facts alone -- as you know, under the personal-conduct policy, you don't need charges, you don't need a conviction.

"And if Commissioner Goodell is going to factor in an incident at Lake Tahoe more than a year ago, then I would say that Ben Roethlisberger is definitely facing some type of disciplinary action, definitely is going to probably be placed in the substance-abuse program, at the very least. Probably undergo some kind of clinical evaluation, and, I might add, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Rooney family that owns the club, they are certainly poised to establish some type of disciplinary action against the quarterback."

Regarding the substance-abuse program, Mortensen didn't say whether this was merely his own speculation or whether he's heard from sources that Roethlisberger is likely to undergo substance-abuse treatment. (It was also a little confusing that Mortensen said both "definitely" and "probably.") The league's substance-abuse program is supposed to be confidential, so if Roethlisberger were to get league-mandated substance-abuse treatment, that fact might never become public.

But Mortensen believes this is a case the NFL and the Steelers are taking very seriously, despite the fact that no charges will be filed.

"My gut feeling," Mortensen said, "is there will be some type of suspension."

I hope he learns his lesson and does not put himself in these same situations again. I do feel Goodell will give him a suspension even if it is a game or two.

If he does (and should be) get suspended, I really hope we play Pitt when he's out.

I'd rather play them when he's in. Seeing us sack him either times in our win was just too fun. And I don't want to give them any excuses should we win that game without him being there.

Bah... why? We already beat the Steelers with him in there. With one less weapon, why would you think we couldn't do it again? Besides, if we start to beat the Stillers regularly, I don't want ANY excuses for them.

I have to ask...how does one get to watch said tournament? Is this a bunch of guys at someone's house, or is it somewhere where a total bored person off the street (me) can walk into and see a sign that says "Beer Pong Extravaganza 2010"?

What kind of lesson does getting away with something teach you? He's simply learned that there are no consequences to his actions.

No charges doesn't mean nothing happened... it merely means, at the least, that there isn't enough there to make a conviction stick. If it was an isolated incident, I'd be able to buy that nothing happened, but there is an established pattern of behavior - I can all but guarantee that something happened... there just either isn't enough proof to make a conviction stick, or someone has been paid off (don't forget the Rooney's are quite invested in Ben not going to jail, and Rooney is a VERY well connected person in the political world as evidenced by him now being the Ambassador to Ireland).

He learned that if he and one of his best WRs get into legal trouble at the same time, the WR is out of here.

I listened to the press conference. Basically, although a small amount of semen was found, the GBI tested it and said it was semen from a person, it was semen from a male, but they didn't have enough of it to develop a pattern. A pattern that would warrant getting ben's dna.

Also, after time, the girl, her family, and her attorney said "don't press charges". Now, my understanding is in a case like this, the victim has no say in whether charges are filed or not.

Perhaps they were concerned with her getting charged with underage drinking? Perhaps the $$$$ from ben were enough? (and I don't know that he paid anything).

Regardless, the PA made it sound like she was drunk as hell. He did say ben and the girl were in the bathroom. He did say there was semen. He did say the girl was bleeding - not from her head. He did say the doctor from the hospital could find no signs of forcible rape.

I hate the steelers - let's get that out of the way, okay? There WAS some sort of sexual contact. And, although ben said he saw her fall and hit her head, the attending physician checked her completely and said there were absolutely no head injuries.

Roth is a scumbag. I'm sorry, but a lot of nfl players get plenty of women, but you don't see any of them have 2 accusations of sexual misconduct in the past 2 summers. I have a hard time believing nothing happened in either episode.

Now there's an upstanding citizen. Get a teenage girl trashed and have one of your bodyguards escort her to a bathroom for you so you can sneak in and have your way with her. Can't prove anything....you're home free! Way to go ben, you jackass.

I listened to it too and he did not say semen but male DNA was found in her genital area with a superficial laceration and some bleeding and that the ER doctor could not say 100% for that it can from a sexual assault.

I'll try to post a link so everyone can watch. I know you can access it via scout.com.

That should work. Since when does bleeding and bruising in the genital area not indicate assault? If anything, that statement shows what a pig bigben really is. Pig Ben....sounds about right.

Mor about Bedtime Ben

Quote:

First, the victim was, according to Bright, "highly intoxicated" after an evening of barhopping and drinking shots with her sorority sisters. With the details of the incident lost in a fog of intoxication, prosecutors are reluctant to file charges. Although the law requires that Roethlisberger's behavior would be the central issue in any trial on a sexual assault charge, prosecutors know that jurors are reluctant to convict when the accuser is shown to be guilty of any form of risky or contributory behavior. If jurors sensed that the accuser was in a brownout or blackout stage of intoxication, they would quickly decide on a not guilty verdict.
