So I was at Best Buy the other day and they had a 3d tv setup, with a 3d blu ray, Pixar movie in it. (I should say I have never seen a movie in 3d before) At first I wasnt overly impressed, but the more I watched, the more i was impressed. Some scenes arent very impressive, but any instances where a bit of depth is shown blew me away.

I can only imagine how it would look watching a movie in a dark living room. The best Buy people said it would be 2-3 years before 3d tv would become mainstream, I cant wait

I usually check out the tv's when im at Best Buy, but after watching 3d blu ray, they all looked like crap.

3D-TV is definitely the next wave in TV.

Sony will be issuing a firmware upgrade in June for all PS3's that turns every PS3 out there into a 3D BluRay player.
I've yet to buy a BluRay, so I've already decided that when I do, I will spend the extra to get a 3D player, and I will probably find a way to talk myself into a 3D set within the next year

ESPN and Discovery are planning to launch 3D channels this year I believe.

Funny - the best 3D is being outside.

3d to me is having my daughter hit a liner right at me. 3D to me is turning around to see a deer barreling down on me. Those things are real 3d.

3D tv? When my current set is fried, if the prices are good, I'll get one. Keep in mind I still watch the Browns in my garage, on an old 27" - old school tv - when right inside the house is a 54" or 60" HD tv.

I was checking out the 3D tv demo at the SonyStyle store that just went out of business at the Beachwood Mall, and, while it was a lot neater than I expected it to be, I'll be damned if I'm ever going to wear a pair of battery powered glasses every time I want to watch a television program, or at any time for that matter.

3D only looks REALLY good when it the movie / show is actually filmed in 3D. This is why Avatar looked so good.

If you film it the normal way and then convert it to 3D to cash in on the 3D craze, like they did with the Clash of the Titans remake or the Pixar movie you saw, it isn't all THAT great looking.

When Avatar comes out on DVD, I'm going to go see if I can take a peak at Best Buy on a 3D set. Not that I'll ever be buying one. . .

I'm not sure about 3D tech yet. Maybe I am wrong but I'm under the impression that you will need to buy additional glasses that works for your TV. These glasses could run $50 - $100. Also if you are having a party and want to watch the Browns people will not be able to bring over their glasses if it is a different format than your TV.

Maybe I have bad information because I am going off an article I read probably 6 months ago but seeing as I just bought a new HD TV 3 years ago this June I'm not sure I'll be in the market anytime soon. I might buy one for my bedroom but in that case it will probably be again just an LCD or Plasma. The cost on them are so low now.

The Tech looks cool, I just saw my first 3D movie in the theaters in December (Avatar) and it was really cool. But if you have to buy expensive glasses to make it work I'm not sure how that will play out with the public. I have a family of four, then if you have a few people over you could be spending hundreds of $$ to have enough glasses.

here is a link to some FAQ's

http://news.cnet.com/3d-tv-faq/

my 42" lcd is only a year old, so it would be 3-4 years before I consider buying one.

Right there is the problem with 3d TV. You could almost by a decent HD TV for the price of getting a family of 4 the glasses.

Just like anything the price will come down but right now it isn't something in my budget.

And for what??? To have 2 channels available this year and 3D Blurays (which I'm sure will be expensive as well) and the regular Blurays are just comming down in price. In fact the last two Bluray movies I bought were the same price as it's DVD counter part on a new release.

I mean if I had a lot of money to waste I'd probably get it but I'm still working on a second HD tv in my house, I doubt I'll get a 3D until they come down in price.

On a somewhat related note, when I was at the SonyStyle store I mentioned in my other post, I nabbed six BluRays for like $12 apiece.

Walmart has some good deals on older movies. You can get movies like Die Hard, True Lies, Rambo on Bluray for like $8.

Reminds me of the movie, The Wedding Singer, which was set in the 80s. Dude gets a CD player, which nobody else has heard of yet, and says he payed almost $800 for it.

My only message to those who want to be the first in the 3D tech: Make sure the brand you buy has internet connectivity and it does firmware upgrades via that connection.

I can tell you the first Bluray players were $1000 and they can't play the new BD-Live capabilities. The one reason the PS3 is one of the best Bluray players is because they constently upgrade it with the new tech. And once again this June the PS3 will have two upgrades, one for 3D gaming and one for 3D Blurays.

So do some research and make sure you are buying something that will be ugraded when ever they make changes to the 3D Tech...because they will make changes.

HD is fine for me at the moment. There's only so much money, I have in the budget for Tv's. Every few years they're shoving something new down your throat. If you keep up you will have a gazillion tv's lying around in your living room.

Kinda like cell phones? Or i anything?

Amazingly - I have a samsung phone - heck, can't even tell you what model. A flip phone - just got it about a year ago, and it was $49 WITHOUT renewing my contract. It can take pictures, I can text, and I can make phone calls.

The pictures I've taken are of the deer I got. The texts I get and receive are junk - jokes. 99% of the calls I get are nothing that couldn't wait till I got in my house or office.

Technology is great. It helps me waste time. Heck, I don't even take my phone with me most of the time - cause anything I get is a time waster.

Yeah, that's about it... the Technology Treadmill.

The TV I have is a DLP screen, I got it about 4 or 5 years ago.
It is still plenty good and I'm in no hurry to replace it, but it's just... BIG - and takes up a large chunk of living room. I'd like to replace it with something significantly slimmer like an LCD/LED/Plasma screen that can get wall mounted - and if I'm going that route anyway (eventually)... may as well get the 3d.

you're crazy. lol

i went to a sony store recently and checked it out. it was alright. i see some benefit but they need to get motion fixed. they were showing Cloudy with a chance of meatballs and it was the scene where the food dam breaks and cop is saving his kid. a lot of info lost in quick motion, which disappointed but there were times when it looked great.

i'm not a fan of $150 glasses for each viewer. what happens if i want to have 10 people over? only a select 3-5 gets a pair? even at $20, i have no incentive to buy many glasses past number of people in houehold.

I think that it is definitely the early-adopter price... the price should plummet over the next two to three years.

I've yet to rationalize buying a HDTV. Still watching on a 5 year old Toshiba 32" tube television. Just can't bring myself to drop a grand on a TV. Call me cheap. I call it frugal.

Oh and the only reason why I carry a cell phone is because my work pays for it. No internet, no texting. It's just a phone.

Keeping up with technology can break a budget. Go for it if that's what your into. I'll watch my Toshiba until it dies. Then I'll upgrade to whatever is the "new thing" in TV's.

okay gramps

no but i actually sort of agree with you....3D? pfft...who cares...HD TV is all i need...not everything is good in 3D...and 3D tv doesn't have enough 3D content out there to make buying it worth it..

Life is too short to not enjoy a Browns game on a 50 inch HD Plasma. I love my TV........when I find time to watch it.

Same here, I still use my 27 inch analog from the mid 90s he he. I just don't watch enough TV to warrant spending that much either.

I do have a 24" 1080p monitor for the pc though.

You can be a bah humbug about technology when it comes to phones. However, I earned a new client recently because of my smart phone. The client, then prospect, emailed me at 10:30 at night needing something right away. Because I have a smart phone and received the email and responded right away, that earned me the client from an older gentleman who they had worked with for sometime. This new client added up to about $4000 extra in my pocket. So, say what you will about phones and technology, but it's making other people like me money. Oh - and it took all of 5 minutes to solve their problem.

I don't begrudge anyone for chasing the technology bug. If using a smart phone for business can make your job easier or more profitable then go for it. Thankfully my career only requires me to carry a phone for phone use. My friends can't text me their jokes, or quotes, or all the other type stuff that I see my wife being texted to her from her freinds. I'm just glad to not be bothered. I typically leave it at home when I'm off the clock. I don't want the internet in my pocket. It consumes enough of my life at home.

of course not.. But well I don't see all this hubbub over 3D.. I've seen a couple of 3d movies recently, but really don't see much use to it... watching it in 2D is just as good and easier on the eyes and you don't have to wear special glasses...

IMO, 3D is pretty useless until they come up with special holographic technology that shows things in 3D without the need of special glasses..

something like the following but with better quality and moving action

I have a ? for the board.......I just bought a 32" Sony HD TV. I have direct tv & they just updated my box last year. Do I need to call them & ask them about an HD box? Someone told me in order to get real HD I would need a HD converter. Said it would cost me a $100 bucks.

Also whenever I put in a dvd the tv says that it is reading in 720 p. Both the tv & player are rated 1080 p. Am I doing something wrong? I hooked up the HDMI cable to the player & tv. Any answers would be welcomed!

Thanks

I'm likely the same or at least a late adopter. I did buy a 50" plasma for $800 a couple of Black Fridays ago. It is great on the eyes and perfect for our viewing in the living room which is fairly large. I can remember when the rear projections easily exceeded the $800 I put out for the plasma. Btw, it replaced a 27" Toshiba. Great TV which in now in my bedroom.

I don't have a phone and don't want one.

Imho, 3D technology hit the market a bit late. A ton of HD TVs were sold with the conversion to digital.

@ bleednbrown - AdamP and others have greater expertise, but it is my guess that you simply need HD channels and your current box may not provide access or only limited access. The signal from DirectTV is already digital so there is no conversion. When I bought my plasma I had to get a box from TW to get the HD channels (assigned in 1,000# range). Carriers typically provide clear QAM* HD channels which a common TV tuner will pick up (the tuner with your TV likely will pick up around 250 channels). In other words, it's likely that you can access a small selection of HD channels via clear QAM. It depends on if they are broadcasted and if your TV tuner can pick up clear QAM. Ulitimately you will likley want to rent or buy their set top tuner box that will give you access to all of their HD programming.

* - clear QAM are unencrypted / unscrammbled channels

Non Blueray DVDs are only 480p. Perhaps your TV displays 720p due to some type of up convert? Dunno. HDMI is digital so it either works or not. I would venture to say that if you have video and audio, then it is functioning properly. Do you have 5.1 or 7.1 audio? Is it working? It sounds like you are good to go.

with directv, they can control whether you get hd or not despite the tuner you have in your tv. if your receiver is not an hd receiver/hd dvr, and you're not paying the monthly fee for hd channels, you're not gonna get hd channels. if you have a cable hookup, you can connect your tv through the regular coax plug, have your tv do a channel scan, and likely pick up the local channels in hd for free provided that your tv has an atsc/qam tuner, which it probably does.

why type of player are you using for the dvd? if you're using a bluray system, then it might just be settings. if you're using an upconverting dvd player, that may just be the limit of the player.

Don't know anything about DirecTV's set-top boxes, but if it has component video (red green and blue outputs) it most likely supports HD at 1080i max, and if it has HDMI it definitely supports HD at 1080i (and 1080p, when television reaches the point that its being broadcast in 1080p). I don't know what DirecTV does in terms of providing HD content however.

As for the DVD, what kind of DVD player is it? I think you said you have it connected via HDMI, which means that, assuming its not a BluRay player, its an upconverting DVD player. If that's the case, then it depends on what player outputs at. With a DVD, which is being upscaled to HD resolution, I doubt you're going to see much difference between 720p, 1080i, and 1080p, especially on a set of your size. If you have a BluRay player, the same is going to apply for standerd DVDs. BluRays should output at 1080p. Do you have makes and model #s for your DVD player and television?

DirectTV and most every other carrier to my knowledge broadcasts in 720p or 1080i.

1080p is for bluerays only.

It is a matter of bandwidth.

With respect to the subject matter, in 3 years the pricing will be down and basically all TV's will have the capability. It is a processing issue that you are paying for now, and they have yet to finalize on a standard. The older TV's had similar issues with the 16:9 versus 4:3 display and the signal format 1080i, 720p etc, etc.

DirecTV will transmit in 1080P, PPV movies, they generally charge a dollar more than a regular movie for it, the box will also upconvert whatever signal and output 1080P easily enough by setting the only output on the box to be 1080P. They also offer excellent video on demand if you have a network connected to the box. Quite a bit of their VOD service is free.

Thanks to all for the reply's.

Adam, I have a Samsung R155 Recordable player. Sony 32" Bravia 1080p
120 hz.

The tv tells me that the hdmi audio is not supported, but I think that is because I have a optical connection to my dvd from the receiver. It is 7 channel output & sounds great.

I think you answered my questions, I will have to pay I guess if I want true HD tv. My wife already is yelling about having to pay for the Direct TV, so I guess I will have to pass on the extra HD.

Thanks, again.

According to this the max resolution your DVD player does is 1080i. It might be set to output all video at 720p. Either way, since DVDs are at 480, playing them back is never going to be "true" HD.

It looks like DirecTV's 1080p VOD offerings are done by downloading over your home network, not transmitted to your dish. I don't know if your current DirecTV package would allow for this if you don't have a HD plan. Something worth looking into, though.
