Auston English is intriguing to me. He was a pretty good player at Oklahoma but was plagued by injuries throughout his whole career.

He's 6'3" 251 pounds so will try and play outside linebacker for us, but I think he has the talent to be a pretty good situational pass rusher.

Isn't that what Alex Hall was doing? If they can replace Alex Hall, here then they did better than value.

Like CB Chancellor...he has a chance to push Francies for the last CB spot on the roster

Some scouting reports:

Scouting Report:
Chris Chancellor: No. 38, CB, 5-10, 172

An undersized corner, Chancellor displays impressive instincts and range when asked to read and react quickly in space. He covers a lot of ground in zone coverage and has the closing speed to get his hands on a lot of balls. He displays impressive balls skills when asked to break down and does a nice job getting his hands on the ball. But he isn't physical off the line and lacks ideal initial balance in his drop. He has a tendency to open up the door inside and struggles to get much of a bump in press coverage.

Chancellor allows opposing receivers to get inside on him too easily off the snap and struggles to disrupt the timing of the pass game. He possesses only an average first step out of his breaks and can be a bit slow to get back up to speed. He lacks the size to consistently go up and make a play on the ball when asked to play from behind. He isn't a physical tackler and struggles to consistently break down and wrap up in the open field. However, he is a very coordinated athlete when tracking the ball and could find a home as a sub package Cover 2 guy.

http://www.draftinsider.net/reports/2010/CB#Chris%20Chancellor

Chris Chancellor
School: Clemson
Position: CB
Bio: Three-year starter posted 37/1/8 as a senior after junior totals of 33 tackles.
Positive: Aggressive yet undersized cornerback who works hard to make plays. Engages opponents off the line, shows a burst of closing speed, and works well with safeties. Fluid turning his hips to transition off the line with opponents. Quick up the field to defend the run or screen plays.
Negative: Very quick to leave his backpedal. Lacks top and speed beaten downfield by opponents. Not a sure-handed tackler.
Analysis: Chancellor's a small yet feisty cornerback best in zone coverage. He has potential as a dime back at the next level if he plays well on special teams this summer.

Scouting Report:
Auston English: No. 33, DE, 6-3, 254

English isn't physical at the point of attack and struggles to maintain his balance when asked to make plays down the line. Lacks the power to consistently stack and shed on contact. Can be sealed out of plays easily on the outside. Displays good awareness off the snap, consistently firing off the ball on time. He doesn't posses a very impressive first step, but he does a nice job using his hands to shed blocks. Shows the ability to drop his pad level when trying to reach the corner. But he lacks the body control to stay on his feet around the edge. Often times, he loses his balance and ends up on the ground when trying to flatten out around the corner.

Isn't very effective when he tries to get into the body of opposing tackles. He has a tendency to get too high on contact and lacks suddenness to work his way off blocks. Once an opposing lineman gets his hands on him, the battle is typically over. He will fight to get some push as a bull rusher and does a nice job getting his hands under the pad level. But he lacks the lower body strength to be very effective in that area. Because of his ability to cause some pressure off the edge, he could find his way onto the field as a hard-working nickel rusher.

http://www.draftinsider.net/reports/2010/DE#Auston%20English

Bio: Three-year starter awarded All-Conference honors as a sophomore. Played in nine games as a senior before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. Totaled 23/6.5/4. Junior numbers included 33/9/4.5 when he also struggled with injury during the year. Career totals of 36/13/9.5 came as a sophomore.
Positive: Undersized college defensive end whose development has been hampered because of injury. Athletic, plays with good lean and body control. Fast off the edge, effective in pursuit, and covers a lot of area on the field. Immediately alters his angle of attack, chases the action, and plays smart football. Works his hands to protect himself, quick in all his actions and displays a good head for the ball.
Negative: Easily stymied at the point and struggles getting off blocks. Lacks natural bulk.
Analysis: English was considered a potential first-round pick after his sensational sophomore season, but he has struggled to remain healthy since. Lacks the great size/speed numbers for the next level but could ultimately be used as a pass-rush specialist or outside linebacker in a 3-4 alignment.

Scouting Report:
Jon Dempsey: 38, ILB, 6-0, 241

A short, tightly wound athlete who lacks fluidly in his drop, Dempsey also lacks ideal footwork when trying to get out of his breaks. He has a tendency to get overextended and struggles to redirect. He isn't explosive when asked to track the ball in pursuit. He takes good angles toward the play but struggles to consistently break down in space. He isn't the most instinctive defender and will take false steps when trying to find the football. But he's effective when he does find it. Dempsey keeps himself clean and uses his hands to make his way down the line. He has a strong base and showcases good power as a wrap up guy. However, he gets washed out of plays too easily. His lack of ideal size, instincts and range will keep him from making an NFL roster.

http://www.draftinsider.net/reports/2010/ILB#Jonathan%20Dempsey

Jonathan Dempsey
School: Louisville
Position: ILB
Bio: Junior college transfer who
Positive: Stout run defending linebacker best on the inside. Plays with a good degree of quickness, flows well to the action and slides off blocks laterally to make the play. Breaks down well, effectively uses his hands to protect himself and fluid turning his hips to run with tight ends in coverage. Flexible, with good movement skills and collapses to the outside in run defense. Plays with an aggressive nature.
Negative: Not a sturdy linebacker and gets caught up in the traffic. Possesses poor speed and struggles in coverage.
Analysis: Dempsey is a stout run defending linebacker who could back up on the inside of a 3-4 defense. He plays with a special teams mentality, which gives him an edge.

Interesting.
His 1st step is quicker than his RG's every play. His pad level seems high, but it's difficult to say,his height plus he appears to be playing against midgets.
Has a good punch, and those long arms.
The kid is a prime example of what project looks like. There's alot of clay there to mold.

It looked like he was playing against a high school team.

Names? NAMES!

Some people crack me up. As was mentioned, Cribbs "name" wasn't big outside of Ohio, but so what?

What's in a freakin' name! I'll tell you what's in a name.........letters.

And that's ALL that's in a "name". Sorry, but I think our FO is looking for "players", not names.

Players that play hard, hit hard, work hard, are coachable and fit well within the system we plan to run on both sides of the ball.

Sorry, but those ingrediants aren't found in a "name".

likely none make the roster, but i'm sort of sad we don't have any local schools on that list.

it usually at least helps them find a job in the CFL, UFL, etc. if they can say they were signed by a NFL team. lots of local kids from local schools that could use that boost. ah well.

Dont forget Leigh Bodden, if he hasnt been mentioned yet.

They had a stat on ESPN that shown a bigger percentage of UDFAs on opening day rosters last year then every round but the 1st round.

Athletic and loves the hell outta that arm punch (and why not, it's solid and he has some long arms), but he looks like he over-reaches at times in trying to do it and looks like he could get eaten alive by a semi-decent speed rusher.

Definitely a developmental guy, but he shows some promise.

Let's face it. Someone had to do it.

I'm just glad we finally got it out of the way.

Did that guy try to jump over him or something (@0:56)? He's 6'8"!

At the end of the youtube clip, you can pull up tape of drills (I think that was a combine or something?). He had some issues with the speed rushers.

Does it bother anyone that all our guys for the two spots on the right side all have cement feet?

Folks, bear in mind this kid was playing CANADIAN COLLEGE football. The Canadian college game is not what one would call stellar. Think a step below Div III in the US.

Odds are this guy never played anyone who could stack up to him physically. So let's not get all Nick Speegle on him.

Not even 1 free agent wide receiver yet?

Besides Massaquoi nobody inspired confidence on the roster, I don't remember a time when the Wr's looked so bad on paper, except for the expansion year. Seriously are they going to line up with only 1 wr and nobody oppisite them. How could that player possibly get open?

70% of league offense is passing?

Massaquoi is easier to spell than his first name.

Let's see....we have 3 dink' n' dunk QBs and a gazillion RBs/FBs...otoh we have a ridiculously overrated (and overpayed) FA-TE and overrated 2nd year WR as "best" receiving options

It's is already easy to figure out our Offense at the end of April...and I don't expect any DC in this league to have headaches before facing us...stack the box, you can't be beat deep anyway

I don't know about you but I expect our Offense to suck as much as last season, esp. the passing Offense...I'm sure we will win some meaningless games against unmotivated and decimated teams late in the season though by running the ball 80% of the time...not that we've seen this film before

We've been the 32nd Offense last season and the only "upgrades" made so far are Delhomme-DA/Quinn, Watson-Royal and Hardesty-Lewis, not counting on Lauvao-Hadnot (which won't be an upgrade in his rookie season...maybe not even when he has reached his ceiling)...if you think that the next worst starting QB after DA/Quinn and a way below AVG TE and a rookie RB are enough "upgrades" to push the worst Offense anywhere even close to AVG or below AVG you're setting yourself up for a big disappointment....we also didn't make any upgrades at OC and HC

It's always lovely looking at depth charts in April...so much hope, so little reason for it

so, you don't think Haskell and Holmgren will be "helping" Daboll with the offense?

i would imagine that would be an upgrade. especially, if we are going to be a short passing team anyway, the WCO (or modified-WCO) would seem to be a pretty good offense to run.

Maybe we'll see some action after some cuts occur.... But right now,, I don't see anyone out there that excites me much.....

I have the same opinion as you on this one Daman. (I think I just threw up in my mouth. ... j/k)

I keep seeing posts where people want us to bring in a vet WR...yet no one who says that actually suggests who we should get.

That cupboard is nearly bare...camp cuts might help, but there will be good reasons why those guys got cut.

People also forget the numbers game by position and the 53 man roster keeps getting better.

I doubt we keep (6) WRs...so one of Robo, Stuckey, Mitchell, or Cribbs would have to go if we signed a "vet" WR.

Should we get Mushin Mohammed - who is done in this league - to provide "vet" experience at the expense of cutting Robo? Stuckey? I wouldn't do that.

If we want "vet" experience, hire Jerry Rice as WR consultant or maybe...just maybe...get a WR coach who gives the receivers the experience angle.

If the WR equivalent of John Henderson (DL) were available...I'd say go after him. But that guy doesn't exist right now.

LOL,, would that be because you find yourself in agreement me, or because you agree with me that there are few choices?

I know there is a big difference between WR's and RB's.. but something occurred here that just kinda happened. As gone over extensively in a different thread (I think the hardesty thread) we find ourselves with a bunch of RB's that are pretty darn good at catching out of the backfield.

Not that I think that's THE answer, but it's somewhat reassuring that we have those weapons in our arsenal...

Still, a burner with good hands would sure make us happy.. we have a long shot in Mitchell,, but that's all he is at this point..

I would love to see a vet WR brought in but I have no idea who that might be. It's feeling more and more like we're just gonna have ALOT of youth at WR going into this next season, but for some reason I think we'll be OK.

Yup,, youth with a year of experience under thier belt.. MoMass had a decent year for a 2nd round rookie.. I doubt many folks would debate that.

Some may say he's at his ceiling.. not sure how anyone could arrive at that conclusion, but some will... I think he'll improve and show signs of being a true #2 guy... Hoping for more however.

Robo wasn't given much in the way of opportunity.. Still don't know why that was. Never really got an answer from Mangini and with all that's been going on the last 4 months, I doubt we get an answer anytime soon..

But if we can get out of Robo this season, what we got out of MoMass last year, that would be a big step up.

That's an awfully bold statement, DJB. Good to see the torches are still lit and you haven't stopped sharpening the pitchforks. Obnoxious, but I admire your resolve.

I'd been thinking about asking you where the bar would need to be set (this season) in order for you to admit Mangini is a good coach.

Why don't you let me know what the offense needs to be rated through 4 games in order for you to observe improvement. You love those ratings, and that's pretty cut and dry. I'm guessing from your above statement you would be amazed to be in the top 20.

I'll be happy to make a sig bet.

Well, it won't be hard to be better than 32nd, lol

...and nice try with the 4 game stuff since we start off with KC and TB...it's either the whole season or nothing for me

My "bar" for improvement would be "better than Romeo, who was a bad coach"....if he makes THIS bar his team isn't as bad as Romeo's, that easy...which still is far from good and even average btw

Mangini 2009: 260yds/Offense, 389yds/Defense = -129yds/game gap

Romeo 2008: 249yds/Offense, 356yds/Defense = -107yds/game gap

Romeo 2007: 351yds/Offense, 360yds/Defense = -9yds/game gap

Romeo 2006: 265yds/Offense, 345yds/Defense = -80yds/game gap

Romeo 2005: 284yds/Offense, 317yds/Defense = -33yds/game gap

So, with a much easier schedule than Romeo in his WORST season, Mangini's Browns produced worse...Romeo's net/game AVG over 4 season is -57.25yds, that's obviously BAD, and why Romeo was considered a BAD HC. If and when Mangini gets better than this minus-AVG THAN he's BETTER than Romeo...he actually needs a plus-AVG this year to get his overall tenure AVG in the vicinity of RAC's

Or even more detailed:

2009: 4.3/yds per play on Offense to 5.8/yds per play on D = -1.5yds/play
2008: 4.3 to 5.7 = -1.4yds/play
2007: 5.6 to 5.4 = +0.2yds/play
2006: 4.5 to 5.3 = -0.8/yds/play
2005: 4.9 to 5.0 = -0.1/yds/play

Romeo's AVG was -0.5/yds/play

TO-ratio:

2005: -7
2006: -15
2007: -2
2008: +5
2009: -12 (so much for "discipline")

With all those bottom line facts in front of me and now all of you...I just don't get the love Ryan gets around here...never been a fan of him and always said so....in FACT his D has regressed although being arguably the most talented and experienced one of the last 5 years...all that with a pretty easy schedule to boot

So, as you see Hooter...it won't be very difficult to "improve" from last year's farce of a season....unlike you guys around here I'm not falling for this kind of "improvement" ( we even were outgained in 3 of the 4 Ws to end the season, we won thos games with ST-play for the most part)...in my book it is NOT improvement if Mangini's team gets back to Romeo's level of play after having us dragged down to the very bottom of the league AGAIN

He's a very bad HC if he can't improve from last season, he's a bad coach if he can't improve from Romeo's AVG....he's an AVG HC when his team is balanced (the stats will reflect it, just look at 2007) over the course of a season....Romeo had 2 AVG seasons, a bad one and a VERY bad one, which makes him a rather bad HC overall....Mangini has a VERY bad one...that's where he's at right now with me

I doubt he will ever get better than Romeo even though that shouldn't be very hard to accomplish....just as I said when he was hired: he's the same talent as RAC, which is BAD...he's just different...RAC was easy-going bad, Mangini is boot-camp bad...both aren't better than the AVG HC they are up against on sundays in the long run...

Mangini IS who I thought he was (actually even worse, somehow the homer in me expected at least a bit better than THAT )

A) What does this have to do with undrafted FAs?
B) Where did you get all these mumbo jumbo numbers? Numbers can say damn near anything you want depending on how you manipulate them.

Mangini hasn't proved himself as the be-all head coach thus far. In fact, he's probably shown less than Romeo has to this point. We'll see what happens this year as I think the only way we can truly grade a coach is how successful they are.

I don't think anyone is sold on Mangini as a long term answer at this point.
