Ravens | J. Lewis to be released Thu, 15 Feb 2007 08:52:02 -0800
Jamison Hensley, of the Baltimore Sun, reports the Baltimore Ravens are expected to release RB Jamal Lewis before he is due a $5 million roster bonus in March. If the Ravens cut Lewis, they are expected to save $3.3 million in salary cap room.

Not sure I believe this just yet...

Well, you could guess they'll tab one of the RB's in the later 1st.

They didn't get rid of him per say, he was a free agent and Minnesota offered more than what they could. If I remember correctly, the Rats were sort of cap strapped last year and couldn't afford to keep him.

That's very true. He could get busted for dealing coke again. If he does, that would limit him to re-signing with the Ravens or going to the Bengals.

I think Lewis may come on the cheap. He had a decent year last year. I'd sign him. I've always liked Lewis, and he is an upgrade over Droughns.

I will kill somebody If I hear the whole thing about his FEET again
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

But what if he proclaims himself a Christian and goes to Church on Wednesday's. Phil might want him then
Hey, don't forget Bengals-West. The Chargers might lose Turner, and they'd need a powerback to compliment Tomlinson. They've shown a desire to deal with character problems such as Kiel, Merrimen, Castillo, and the LB that went bonkers and got shot *L*

That was part of his reputation coming out of Maryland. I never questioned his talent, but I always questioned his character after I'd read the reports. I didn't think he'd be this good this quickly, and for that I underestimated just how good he could be, but his suspension proved why his character was in question.

They might try to resign him, but why wouldnt they just restructure if those are their intentions.
I know that Isaac Bruce was released and resigned before the CBA raised the cap and teams went on a cutting spree.

Restructuring a contract has different implications than simply releasing a player and redoing one, depending completely on what the original terms were.

It would most likely be Anderson and PJ Daniels, and some draft pick or F/A, and our full back, Ovie Mughelli (if we re-sign him). Musa Smith is, unfortunately, too injury prone. There is also some talk about trying to nab Turner from San Diego, but I think the Ravens would have to wait in line behind other teams with less cap limits who would probably get him first. But a lot depends on how the deal would be structured. I'd love to get Turner; but then again, who wouldn't?
There are a lot of different opinions about Lewis, but personally, I'd like to see him go. Even when he ran well, he was a whiner about how many touches he got. Now, he's just a slow, washed up, P.I.T.A., IMO.

Not to toot our own horn but I believe it is. There is alot of intelligent football on this forum. Bias at times sure, opinionated ya who isnt, but still most seem to respect another teams perspective on things. As long as they arent trolls SteelHack always has valuable information and points of views to share and he cheers for one of our biggest rivals. So I guess what I am trying to say is welcome and hope you can enjoy the football conversation that us as Browns fans have to offer.
PS Dont venture over to the other Browns board that is off of ClevelandBrowns.com, it will haunt you.

Thanks much, DHBF. It really is interesting to see different perspectives on things; especially the whole Jamal Lewis (and also Adalius Thomas) threads. Because we've been discussing the same things for weeks on the Ravens board. So there is something I think Ravens fans can contribute to the mix.

im just trying to figure out how yall say he is washed up when he got over 1000 rushing yards last year?
and i want him as our back-up, splitting time w/ Adrian Peterson.. not as our full-time starter.. that tandem would kill teams.. SPEED/ AGILITY and PURE STRENGTH... I love the thought...
side note: Lewis > Droughns

1000 yards just ain't what it used to be. LOL. Lewis left almost as many yards on the field as he gained, and it killed drives for us. He would do that stupid pitter-patter thing with his feet -- going nowhere -- not like a patient runner, looking for holes -- but rather, like a scared runner, afraid of getting hurt -- misssing the holes the line would open up for him, then all he'd do would be to run into the backs of our linemen. We watched it week after week. Now, supposedly, it was because he had bone spurs that he never told anybody about. Hmmmmmmmmm....make up your own mind on that one.
And aside from the pitter-patter crap, he could be brought down with single arm tackles. I can't even tell you how many times I'd see defensemen lying on the ground, and they'd stick out an arm, and Lewis would go down. And he'd go straight down like a ton of bricks. I'd see other runners who were able to at least fall forward for a yard or two. Lewis would end up losing a yard or two on similar plays. There were only a couple of games in which Lewis played with any real fire. It just wasn't enough.
And as if all of that isn't bad enough...he's a whiner who has never shown an ability to "play nice" with other backs, so the "splitting the duties" you suggest -- which I agree with 100%, BTW -- is not in Lewis' repertoire. At least it hasn't been so far in his career. And as far as I'm concerned, I'd just as soon not risk taking the chance. However, given Billick's relationship with Lewis, I fully expect Lewis to be back in 2007 -- although I think it would be a huge mistake on the part of the Ravens.

Welcome to the Board...my biggest fear out of all this is that the Ravens are going to get lucky and have Lynch fall to them. I think he is a great talent in this draft and personally prefer him to Peterson. The Ravens would be vastly improved with him.
Lewis...what a great talent. He definately didn't look the same as he did in his 500+ yds against us in 2 games season.
Is this a spent up talent move? Or just an economical move as RB is one of the easiest positions to fill in the draft and get impact.
Bang for the buck deal?
Diam: Merriman had a cloud of rumor regarding steroid use. Whisperings but none proven. The SD thing...if steroid use as mentioned he would have it masked. This truly was an oversight of not reading the 300 contents in a Supplement he was using.

My God Eo, please don't tell me you actually believe that Merriman simply used a bad supplement None of his stories washed. He got busted. It happens all the time.
He took steroids and was caught. His character issues were proven valid. He's a great player who took steroids. It's an open and shut case.

eo,I must go with Toad on this one and here's why.............. Masking agents are often "just one step ahead of the testing". Many masking agents that worked last season, won't work this season. Science is always working to circumvent the latest, greatest masking agent. And they're usually not far behind. So IMO,which is all it is,the masking agent Merriman used, had already been discovered and solved on how to circumvent it by the scientific community. Because that happens all the time. Otherwise, these players would NEVER get busted!
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I would be VERY disappointed to see the Browns even TALK with anyone named "Lewis" that ever has been connected with Baltimore. The Browns need veteran leaders - not criminals.

So you say??? Prove your version...show me any article suggesting that he was shooting steroids and just got caught.
I can't say for certain anyway. But I know the masking chemists are way ahead of the testing chemists. For him to get caught tells me he didn't try to hide it - whether he's been a user before or since I can't say 100%. The fact he was caught does not prove your theory. But just cause you state that is the way it is - Cause you're simply way smarter than I. sorry not ready to swallow it. Back it up. Then I can be convinced.
