Have to dissagree. A win is a win! Period....end of story. Other teams sure have been counting and bragging over BEATING the snot outta us for years. Bet none of the other 31 teams give up those wins nor will they add a asterick.. We win they lose...thats it. Nothing more....nothing less.
You dont have to win every game just the next one!

I *think* I sensed some degree of sarcasm in his post ..... I'm not entirely sure ..... but I think so ......

if you look for progress then our 4 game streak started 2 weeks earlier in cincy, we played well in a road loss. Next week we played SD tough and players may have taken a bite into EM's unconventional tactics.
we can take a lot from our 4 game win streak, progress being one.

Ya know, I hadn't thought about it that way.. Played Cincy and SD tough,, lost, but still, played tougher and started to look like a team.. Then follow that up with 4 wins..

I wonder what Holmgren and Heckart thought when they reviewed the season from game 1 to 16. A win is a win,no doubt....but at the end of the day....the Browns were a 5-11 team. As far as a 4 game winning streak goes..better get that done vs the rest of the AFC North or look at drafting in the Top 10 again in 2011.

Actually, Holmgren kinda commented on that when he announced that Mangini was staying. I'm paraphrasing, but essentially, he said that the 4 game win streak at the end of the season showed him somethimg about the coaching staff... the result of which was Mangini and the coaching staff staying. (well, except for one guy,, can't remember who it was, but he left)
But in the end, he must have felt that the staff showed enough to make it worth another year (or more).

Yup,, thats always a possibility,, but if he thought it was a throw away year, then Holmgren is an idiot for not starting the rebuild as soon as possible..,
Keeping Mangini, alowing him to continue to install his system, getting players that fit that system seems like the dumbest course of action.
I don't believe for one second that Holmgren is that stupid.., do you?
So basically, I don't believe it. I'm thinking that it is what it appears to be.. and that is that Holmgren really thinks that mangini can do the job and is giving him the time and support needed to succeed..

Shep I do NOT agree with much of what you said. In order to be a decent team you 1st have to beat all the bad ones. We did. That is improvement.
Pitt was in a fight for their playoff lives and for their pride if nothing else and they were soundly throttled. There was no, we were lucky to have won, we beat them from the opening whistle on.
I just finished re-watching that particular game we played simply great.
Having said all that every other team we played to close out the season was bringing 9 guys down in the box and we still ran over the top of them. I don’t care who you play if you are able to do something and have the opponent know your going to do it, and do it still with success that is some real outstanding football.
You can’t paint this picture where everyone simply laid down and let the Browns have their way with them, that simply didn’t happen. We beat them because we played better as a team.
At the end of the day the Browns have a long ways to go, but winning games to close out the season against even bad teams is a good thing for us, and it is a starting point. We have to beat the bad teams 1st, the better teams 2nd, and so on, we beat the bad teams now lets just hope they can beat some better teams and move up the food chain.
But winning even at the end was something this team can build on, and shouldn’t be thrown around like it was meaningless because of the quality of the teams we beat. A win is a win……………………..

Someone far wiser than me once said that you can only play the team you are scheduled to play.
The thing that impressed me about our final 4 games of last year is this:
We led the Steelers game from the word go.
We were tied with the Chiefs in the 2nd half, but did not trail after taking the lead.(although we were tied late)
We were never really threatened by the Raiders.
We handled the Jaguars from the word go.
That's 3 of 4 games during that streak where we didn't get "lucky" to win .... but outplayed the competition from the start. I think that was the real encouraging part.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Along those lines:
One of the most frustrating and maddening parts of the early games wasn't that we were losing - we're Browns fans, we're accustomed to that all too well - it was the manner in which we were losing. We were regularly setting the bar pretty damned low. We weren't just merely losing, we were getting beaten around, humiliated, punked, and generally looked like we didn't belong on - nor wanted to be on - a football field of any sort, much less an NFL field.
Then, as you pointed out, we ended the season on a complete and total reversal of that trend.
NONE of that should be construed to say that we've arrived or even that we're a quality team now... but, we are NOT the team that we were in Week 1 of 2009. Not even close.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

The last three posts are right on. Real games, real teames, we won 4 in a row and 3 of 4 we kicked their butts. We became a better team that last stretch.
Will we continue to see that awesome running game, PLUS the ability to actually complete a 5-yard pass? Can we dominate the clock, and allow our defense to be really aggressive, PLUS greatly improved pass coverage?
I know we're not quite ready yet. BUT, we may be a heckuva lot better than most people think. 9-7 or 10-6.

This is a GREAT point and the one, while i still think the opposition was soft, having teams KNOW you are going to run and still be able to force your will and have great execution did show me something BIG. I am old enough to remeber what I think was the best football I ever watched- the 1960s Packers. They ran at you and you KNEW they were running yet executed so flawlessly teams were helpless to stop it. the pittsburgh team is fast, lbers flying around YET when you run at them play after play, they were worn down by the fourth Quarter. WE beat them up, not on the scoreboard but we pushed them around. We shoved the bully into the dirt and THAT is why we won the last three,
Here is my excitement. Should Jake be competent and with what we added at RB, OL, TE, LB, CBa nd ATTITUDE, we are a darkhorse candidate to punch some teams in the mouth. With what we added at CB we have fine players all the way to nickle and that will allow more heat, more blitzing from Ryan and the Players LOVE that. the tighter coverage and HEAT= what? TURNOVERS. Rack em up. Palmer at CINCI is Gun shy and we SWEEP them. BEN gets clobbered even more and just lost their best olineman and WR. I like that too> Flacco looks more ordinary with more HEAT.
It all hinges on Jake and running the ball down the throats of our opponents. lets go 60s packers on teams.

General reply:
The last 4 games the browns were of a different mindset than what we have seen since the return. Only the 2002 team was mentally tough but they played a soft brand of football on offense.
What we saw during those last 4 games was mentally and physically a tough brand of football. The Jags, Raiders and Steelers are 3 teams that pride themselves as being the tough guys of the NFL yet the Browns beat them up .
I am no fan of Mangini but you have to love the mental attitude of this team down the stretch.
I am excited to see the tough guy image continue. We are going to pound the football on O and turn the dawgs loose on D. I am not looking forward to seeing this team throw the football.

If it was a 1 or 2 game win at the end of the season I would be happy about it, but cautious. 3 games I'd be a little easier and happy to see the team making efforts. 4 games give me optimism that something may have clicked in the players minds.
People often say that winning cures all, and we really needed some consistent wins to break the mindset of losers the team was stuck in. They needed something to believe in themselves as a team. Football is a team sport, you can be the best in the world, but if you can't all work together as a team you will fail more than you succeed. And those wins helped this team see that they can do it.
This gives them some positive mentality going into this season that is only a plus. Does it equal wins? No it doesn't but it is a much better place to start than a 11 game losing streak.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Just so everyone gets a truer picture of last season,, yeah, we won the last four games.. But look back to the 3 games prior to those last 4.. We played San Diego tough and only lost by 7 against a very good team.. Before that we played the Bengals, a team that won our division last year and we played them tough and only lost by 9 .. and then there was Detroit that wasn't a very good team, but here again, we lost by only 1 point. So, if you really want to look at the year as a whole, the first 9 games with the exception of Buffalo,, we were just awful.. And to be honest, the Buffalo game wasn't anything to write home about either. But the last 7 games (3 losses, 4 wins) something happened.., we changed, we started to play better. So really, while the last 4 games were wins, the 3 before it was when we began to show a little life. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Cleveland_Browns_season#Week_12:_at_Cincinnati_Bengals

Perhaps it is only coincidental, but when our "established veterans" on defense went down (and jamal lewis too), our fortunes went up.

Yup,, as odd as that sounds, that might have been the difference.
Of course I have no way of knowing so it's all guess work, but maybe the younger guys bought into the system and just worked it... dunno, but you have to at least give that some cred right?

Yup, it has to be considered a factor. They were young and hungry and perhaps, a little more willing to buy what Mangini was sellin'.

3 of the 4 teams were bottom feeders on the D side of the ball and the Stillers played one of their worst games in the past 5 years when we faced them.
Not to mention that a few of the over-rated starters were out and street FA's brought in outplayed them..but I'm sure few would care to admit that, even though this was discussed at length last year..This team looked like a junior varsity team prior to this..a total embarrasment..only when certain things happened did it look ...better..fact is ,nine games before it ,it was unbearable to watch..like a expansion team..

Who went down or out: Rogers DQ Barton Dawson Heiden Edwards ( traded) Royal (IIRC) Lewis Zastudil
IMO, we are a better team with Rogers, Zastudil, Dawson and maybe even DQ.
The rest I'm ambivalent about.I think it was more of a coincidence.
Edit:or the coaches figuring out a scheme to fit the personnell

I was mainly thinking of DQ and Rogers when I wrote that. The personell/scheme fit probably had something to do with it, as well.

No doubt.
And people don't like to hear it, but the Stillers did play a bad football game that day. We did not "throttle" them as was posted earlier. They played a bad football game and the other teams we were victorious against sucked ass. Charlie Frye and 3 picks when we played Oakland???? *LOL* Nooooooooo, it was because we ran all over them! Even when those teams had 8, 9, and 10 guys in the box we prevailed! (yes, there have been posts with all of those numbers of guys in the box, was surprised not to see a post that said 12)
Ahhhhhhhhhhh, but it's something to "build" upon. A meaningless streak against a bunch of bad teams that were at the end of the year. That reminds me of reading in the newspaper today how the Pirates went 6-20 in June. I recalled that back in March and April the same paper was talking up how they were going to be fun to watch this year.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh the offseason. When facts and memories tend to get skewed by optimism.

The thing about this is, you don't know.. neither does Attack.. for that matter, neither do I.. The difference between us is, I'm willing to accept that it might have been the Browns that were Just TOO much for the Steelers on that particular day... You and Attack don't seem to want to even consider it as a possibility.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh the offseason. When facts and memories tend to get skewed by optimism.
1st I didn’t make my post based on memory, or based on what someone said after the game(who cares). I clearly said I just got done re-watching the entire game, and brother we throttled them, period.
Big Ben got sacked 8 frigging times 8…………….. That is pretty much unheard of against any team even the bad ones. One of those sacks came on a 3rd and long with us rushing 3 guys and we still nailed his ass to the ground. Oh and BTW it wasn’t a coverage sack either Benard absolutely owned their RT, and was in on Ben just about the time he finished his drop. That is memory BTW but recent memory.
And you’re right the Steelers did play a bad football game brought about by us outplaying and out smarting and out coaching them. It pains you to give credit where credit is do I understand… But that is how you win games in the NFL, hopefully you’ll get more used to it as we go along…………
When you face off against a 6-6 team that is teetering on elimination after having won the SB the year before, and you beat them the way the Browns beat the Steelers sure there is hope and optimism where the hell is yours.
At the end of the day we should all bow our collective heads in shame at having throttled the SB champs who where playing for their playoff lives because well they had a bad game, GMAB……….
Way to turn a positive into a negative….
You won but they suck don’t fly with me, never has.. You have to beat the bad teams otherwise you’re a bad team.. Like I said it’s a starting point, and while I realize you don’t think so I think winning is always a good thing….. And winning the way we won that game is even better, because you guessed it we THROTTLED them………………

Why is it with guys like these, that when the Steelers beat up on a crappy team, they brag about their dominance. But when a crappy team' like ours was last year, beats up on a supposed good team, it was because they had a down game?
I remember the game well, and we outplayed them in all facets. That is how games are won in the NFL.

People keep talking about the injuries and the subs on defense as the reason for our improvement down the stretch but the biggest difference I saw was still on the offensive side of the ball.... Something came together with our running game and everything seemed to feed off that..
And I'm in the camp that says winning games, even against bad teams, is good. Evidently we are not allowed to feel any optimism because we played better the final few weeks and won some games... and I say that is better than playing the same and losing those games...

I can't find fault with your thinking at all DC..
I was wondering if the gurus on this board might be willing to accept that because the running game came together so well and we retained possession of the ball longer, if maybe that's not at least part of the reason why the D looked better? Just wondering...

3 of the 4 teams were bottom feeders on the D side of the ball and the Stillers played one of their worst games in the past 5 years when we faced them.
(yes, there have been posts with all of those numbers of guys in the box, was surprised not to see a post that said 12)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh the offseason. When facts and memories tend to get skewed by optimism.
Sorry Sheppy you are skewed on this. The Steelers did have a bad day caused by not containing Josh Cribbs. Caused by team that gave them no gift turnovers. caused by a team that by running the ball down their throats kept them bottled deep in their end of the field. The Steelers shut down the browns pretty well in the second half yet that "bad day" continued as big Ben continued to be dragged down like a Georgia coed. The Steelers have had a near decade of gloating and physically pushing the Browns around: yeah it sure was a bad day as the former bully had their noses shoved in the dirt. I think they are due for another bad day or two this year as well.
Also The Steeler players Knew the former patsies took their lunch money and punched it in for the season. And that bad day had the patsies punch three other teams in the nose. I have been a fan since 1964 and I have been a very VOCAL critic at how inept this team has been run for a decade and I would definitely never be accused of "being skewed by optimism"...yet in that Bad day I saw a team grow up and become a team. I saw a PRIDE return to the Browns i have not seen in a LONG time. I am not a great lover of mangini or delhomme , but that bad day for the Steelers, and the "mini streak" I saw something I have not seen since the RETURN: PRIDE.
You want to know why parcells gets teams to win: he finds the Pride in every team he takes over and challenges them to dig deep. The browns dug deep that day vs the Steelers: who were so used to gloating and coasting, then fighting then you finally saw it: panic. The former pasty woosy punched them in the face and traded blow for blow until the browns were standing at the end; you may dismiss this as a "bad day" sheppy, but I saw something of far greater significance than a close win, I saw the RETURN of PRIDE and the Browns then punch three other teams in the nose in succession.
This was not a bad day for the Steelers but a great day for the Browns. You add two top corners to the guys we have we are deep to nickle and watch Ryan really start putting pressure and watch the defense if the defense does not give a lot of teams a "bad day". yeah I am very excited about Holmgren yet that bad day and change in the defensive attitude and return of PRIDE of the players has me even more excited than the personnel moves. Sure I still bitch about Quinn trade but that bad day against the Steelers and the rekindling of PRIDE I saw from the player to Mangini made me give the coach a pass in hopes i see more of it. I am quietly excited.

I have thought that all along.. one, the defense was actually getting some rest but perhaps most importantly, when they DID make a stop, the offense was actually doing something.. it's amazing how that will kick start morale.

We did play bad teams but we played better and we beat bad teams.. the first step in getting better is not beating the Colts and the Saints, it's beating the Raiders and the Chiefs.. and we did that. Hopefully it achieved a couple things... one being that we can have some confidence carry over to this season and the other being that those vets who were out for those games might need a light a fire under their butt...

Mmmm,, There is another thought somewhat along those lines.. I know that all we hear about is that we beat 4 bad teams at the end of the season,, but if you have even the slightest open thought process, you will believe that good can indeed come from losses as well..
What I mean by that is that 2 of the three games prior to the 4 game win streak were against playoff teams.. They were losses, but narrow losses and we did play them tough.. I'm speaking of SD and Cinci.... (detroit was the third)
Those three games were like a prelude to the kiss so to speak.. It's like we were learning how to win, getting lessons and getting close.
THen we started to win. Kind of a run up to winning.
Those last 7 games, two teams made the playoffs, 2 were close and 3 teams were more or less on par with us.
So it's not as black and white as saying, they were all bad teams.. Well, at least I don't think so....

For me, it's not so much the fact that they won 4 games. My optimism has more to do with how we looked in those games. Just like you said, we were fighting against the Steelers. Who was the linebacker that broke up Big Ben's last pass late in the fourth? He definitely should've caught that (the ball drilled him right between the letters), but he was so excited about icing the game it looked like he bumbled it.
That and the way Jennings was running the ball (in the first half, it looked like he was out of gas later in the game, and I don't blame him). Cribbs was Superman.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.
