Somehow...that gets spun around as Republicans "thwarting a bill with unemployment aid"...which is a load of crap.
It sure is,and it is political crap that gets flung from both sides. I think this Democrat vs Republicans thing has gotten way out of hand and is destroying our nation and people who are buying the rhetoric from both sides and are doing the dumb ass lefty vs righty crap need to wake up and realize that both sides are playing the American public for suckers.

There's a big difference between "democrats vs. republicans" and "conservative vs. liberal". I'm a conservative and I do not believe the republican party does a good job of representing my beliefs anymore.....although they do moreso than the dumbocrats. I think most of the conservatives on this board agree. I also think the tea party is on the right track.

Tux,
I am hardly missing the boat as I do pay those employment taxes...and feel/know all to well what that expense does to my bottom line and my cost of services.
The real boat in this issue is here:

BTW, it appears that we are in agreement for the most part.
Pork or no Pork... I have a problem with them extending the unemployment benefits.... at what point do they just say "ok that is enough"? They've already extended it out to 99 weeks in a lot of places. It's about time to just say sorry.. but you are going to have to go out there and try to find something whether it's minimum wage or not..
Ideally, we would reform the unemployment system to allow these workers to take lesser jobs by offering a slight subsidy to their wage until they find a better job..

We are in agreement.
I also advocate some requirement for social service after benefits reach a certain number of weeks...say...4-8 hours per week of volunteer work after the sixth week of benefits.
Unemployment benefits have gone the way of welfare in that they no longer are used as they were intended.

And if we got the illegal aliens out of the country, we'd have 11-20 million additional jobs for someone to take.

Exactly. I know 2 people in my small, rural, hilljack town alone that do nothing but mow yards, plow snow, and one of them tills gardens.
One of them lives in a house most would kill for. The other one is tighter than a lug nut and has cash out his rear.
All doing jobs "americans don't want to do".
I'm lining up mowing jobs by the way.

Well to be honest I dont think either party(or any politician for that matter) reperesents the American people, they represent making themselves as rich and powerful as possible and creating a poop storm between the partys,or creating a us versus them mentality benefits them all.

The only money the Govt has is what it takes away from the people. We all pay for unemployment.
My Brother-in Law was on unemployment for two years. When it ran out he went out and found a job. He doesn't like it ( running a forklift nights at BJ's ) but he likes eating and living indoors. How long is fair? Two years is a long time. Most Americans don't have a work ethic like Jules anymore.
Along those lines - my cousin got layed off. Got on unemployment - for just over a year. He then got a job that paid $10 an hour. The place was working 10 hrs a day, plus 8 on saturday and sunday. That's 40 hours at $10= $400, plus 10 hours o.t. during the week, and 16 o.t. hours on weekends, for 26 hours of o.t. at $15 an hour, which = $390, for a total of $790 per week.
He quit after a month, saying "heck, I took home more on unemployment than I made working 7 days a week.".
Work ethic???? Too many people say "why have it if I can get money for free sitting my ass at home?"
Extend unemployment past 99 weeks? All you're asking is for trouble. Well, more trouble. This country is already so screwed it's pathetic.

I agree. That is why we are seeing a lot of Republican office holders fighting for their jobs as well as the Democrats. Generally the party in power in bad times is the only one to have such highly competitive primaries.
The talking heads say it's just an anti-incumbent movement. I disagree. On the Dems side I understand that logic. I think on the republican side it isn't as much about throwing the bums out but more about lets bring back conservatives.
We get painted by a lot on the left that post here about how we didn't complain when the Republicans did things. That is simply false. The reason it is false is because a lot of us are conservatives who side with Republicans because we have no other option.

Exactly. I would prefer to be "no party affiliate". But for some reason, I get classified as republican in the nicer threads, and right wing zealot or worse in other threads.
It's pretty simple from my view point. Either you can pay for what you do, or you can't, and our government doesn't understand that. And then I see clips of idiot senators or representatives - how some of those people got elected is beyond me - until I realize that "hey, all they have to do is promise people they will give them money", and then I realize how people get elected. Hell, you don't need to know english usage, you don't need to know how many states are in this country, you don't need to know jack about the constitution..........all you have to do is promise money to voters and bam, you're in.

Let's try this argument out for those folks that think cutting unemployement is not fair.
Is allowing people to sponge off unemployment for 2 years fair to all those people that got it for 26 weeks and then told to go find work? It was that way for many many years, now all of a sudden it is supposed to be a lifelong commitment?
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

What is THE WORST RECESSION IN AMERICAN HISTORY, supposed to look like?
Most of the layoffs that started at the beginning of America's economic collapse in the fall of 2008 continued into most of 2009. The layoffs were "massive" and "wide" in nature and covered all aspects of the American economy/businesses. A few reminders...
web page ]web page December 05, 2008
The barrage of bad news continued Thursday as a number of companies announced layoffs: AT&T (T) said it will layoff 12,000, 4% of its total workforce. DuPont (DFT) said it will layoff 2,500 full time and 4,000 contractor positions, with more to come in 2009. Credit Suisse (CS) said the company will layoff 5,300, 11% of its total workforce, primarily from its investment banking division. Belden (BDC), a St. Louis, MI-based manufacturer, said it will layoff 1,800, 20% of its workforce. Viacom (VIA.A) said the company will layoff 850, 7% of its total workforce. Adobe (ADBE) said the company will layoff 600 people. ``````````````````````````````````````````
web page]web page Headlines for January 27, 2009 Pfizer, Caterpillar, Sprint Announce Major Layoffs The list of major companies announcing mass layoffs grew on Monday as Pfizer, Home Depot, Caterpillar, Sprint Nextel and at least eight other firms announced plans to cut more than 75,000 jobs. Pfizer said it would cut nearly 20,000 jobs as part of its acquisition of Wyeth. Caterpillar plans to eliminate 20,000 as well. 8,000 jobs are being cut at Sprint Nextel, 7,000 jobs at Home Depot, 3,400 jobs at Texas Instruments and 2,000 jobs at General Motors. Last week, Microsoft announced it would cut as many as 5,000 jobs in the company’s first mass layoffs. ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
web page ]web page 23 February 2009 Layoffs at GM Lordstown plant ravage Ohio communities General Motors recently announced plans to eliminate the second shift at its Lordstown, Ohio, complex in April, laying off 800 workers. Just last December GM cut the third shift at the facility, slashing 900 jobs. As recently as this summer over 4,000 were working on three shifts at the several plants that make up the Lordstown complex. Currently the workforce is down to 2,500, and with the layoffs in April the number of workers will fall below 2,000. ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````
So, what is THE WORST RECESSION IN AMEREICAN HISTORY supposed to look like?...If you still don't know...review the info above again..layoffs were/are MASSIVE.
The layoffs started approx. 2 years ago...
Were the layoffs comparable to other recessions?...The answer is NO, these layoffs are historic..as in never seen before...not since the great depression has this nation endured such a loss of jobs.
IS THE RECESSION OVER?
The USA GDP turned positive in the 3rd quarter of 2009...2.2 .......in the 4th qt...gdp was 5.6 .......1st qt of 2010...gdp was down to 2.7
When Obama says the economy is teetering...I would say he's right. Could the economy turn negative again?..it sure could. The number #1 issue in America is JOBS.
While everyone is concerned about our nation's defiecits, now is not the time to take on the task of reducing deficits, IMO. If our nation's economy does not recover and come back strong, the deficits are not going to matter much.
It took decades to build this deficit and it will take longer to reduce it, so let's not act like it is a dire emergency to focus on reducing the deficits now...at a time when this nation is trying to recover from the worst recession in history.
We need to keep our priorities in focus...#1 is JOBS. How quickly will our economy recover from the massive layoffs that have occurred as a result of the worst recession in American history? IMO, it will be slow and many of the businesses that cut jobs are going to be cautious when it comes to adding jobs to their payroll.
Is a second stimulus needed?...we don't know but if we want to error on the side of recovery from the worst recession in America's history, why not opt for a second stimulus plan?
A little history lesson that some may have forgotten about...
...when Bush took office, they said they inherited a recession that was going to require a stumulus plan if we were to recover from it. Comparing the Bush recession to the Obama recession...let's just say that some economist even questioned whether the Bush economy was actually in recession.
...then 9/11 happened and Bush pushed for his proposed a stumulus package that focused on tax cuts to spur the economy and create jobs growth. Republicans were not interested in talking about deficits in 2001.
...In 2003, Bush with a slowing economy, Bush again pushed for another economic stumulus package off more tax cuts to help spur the economy to keep it from falling into recession again...and again, Republicans were interested in talking about deficits in 2003.
What was the cost of the Bush Economic Stumulus Plans of 2001 and 2003?
...$1.7 trillion dollars..
...and that was to stimulate an economy that was no where near THE WORST RECESSION IN AMERICA'S HISTORY.
Bush and the GOP enacted stimulus programs that cost $1.7 trillion dollars for a short, mild recession in 2001 and a "slowdown" in 2003...and the GOP was not concerned about deficits, either.
Obama asked for and received $787 billion stimulus plan to help pull America out of the worst recession in America's history and suddenly, the GOP is concerned about the deficit.
Now is not the time to worry about the nations deficit!
Getting American workers back to work is the #1 priority.
Due to THE WORST RECESSION IN AMERICAN HISTORY...the layoffs suffered by the working class have been MASSIVE by comparison to past recessions. It will take time...a long time, to create the needed jobs and get this economy back to the place it was before Bush took office.
It took 8 yrs of misguided policies to create the mess our working class Americans are trying to survive. Lord knows how long it will take to fix the mess.
Extending unemployment benefits is the least we can do for working class Americans.

Personally, I think anything longer than 6 months is overkill, despite the economy. I got laid off in 2001 (right after 9/11), I went on unemployment and began my job search. After about 4 months I felt totally useless still being on unemployment. So, I took a low paying job that I had no interest in, just to get off the dole. I FAR prefered the crap job. I felt like a productive person again. I stayed at that job for 6 of the longest months of my life but found something better for myself. And that opened up my previous crap job for someone else who might actually enjoy it.
Despite the economy, there are jobs out there. Sure, some of them are total crap. But, there is always something to be had that will pay you more than unemployment. Hell, working as a WalMart Greeter pays more than unemployment. Six months is plenty of time to find a job in the vast majority of cases. I've know plenty of people that were laid off and only one stayed on unemployment longer than 5 months.
RIP My Love 1969-2025 20 years was not enough

Oh, so it was Bush that made these "Working Class" Americans have two car payments, large houses and children while living paycheck to paycheck saving nothing so that when they lost their job they were screwed?
I'm sorry 99 weeks is plenty of time to find a job. If you can't by now you are on your own. I've had a few hard times over the years and I didn't look for a handout I worked two jobs untill I was in a better situation.
I'll be willing to bet that a good majority of these "Working Class" Americans that are wanting another extension to their unemployment still have Cable TV, Cell Phones and/or Broadband Internet.
If these jobs are gone then it's time for some Americans to realize that they need to live within their means. If the only job you can get is 5K less than what you were making then it is time for you to get rid of some things that are not nessesary.
Our Government can't sustain these people any longer. 99 weeks is enough. Time to get back to work and reconfigure your lifestyle to match your new salary. There are other programs already that can help the people that still need it. (ie: Welfare, Food Stamps, Government Assistance)

The Obama administration said we need further stimulus to avoid a double dip recession...need anymore evidence?
U.S. consumer confidence crumbled in June
BREAKING NEWS NEW YORK — A monthly report on U.S. consumer confidence, released Tuesday, showed a sharp decline in June from May, reversing a three-month climb, as Americans digested a batch of unsettling news that raised new concerns about the economy's health.
The closely-watched U.S. Consumer Confidence Index, released by the Conference Board, a private research group, showed a reading of 52.9 in June from May's 62.7 reading.
The index — which measures how shoppers feel about business conditions, the job market and the next six months — had been recovering fitfully since hitting an all-time low of 25.3 in February 2009.
A reading above 90 indicates the economy is on solid footing; above 100 signals strong growth. Economists watch the number closely because consumer spending including health care and other major items, accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity.
Economists had already believed confidence will remain weak for at least another year because of stubbornly high unemployment. But a batch of economic data — from disappointing job figures in May to dismal housing numbers — is increasing worries that the road to recovery could be rockier than anticipated. Amid such concerns, the Dow Jones Industrials has fallen 9.5 percent since late April.
"We're concerned about the strength of the economic recovery from here," said Richard Hastings, macro and consumer strategist with Global Hunter Securities. "That would suggest weaker consumer confidence" for the next few months.
In particular, new housing data released last week signaled a renewed housing slump that may threaten the broader economy. The Commerce Department reported on Wednesday that sales of new homes collapsed in May, sinking 33 percent to the lowest level on record as potential buyers stopped shopping for a home amid the expiration of government tax credits. That came a day after a report showed that sales of previously owned homes fell unexpectedly in May.
On Friday, the government lowered its estimate of how much the economy grew in the first quarter of the year, noting that consumers spent less than it previously thought.
The Commerce Department announced Monday that Americans spent a little more in May but not enough to accelerate the economic recovery. Consumer spending rose 0.2 percent last month after no change in April. But personal income was up 0.4 percent. A bigger rise in income than spending means consumers are still wary about their financial circumstances and choosing to save money.
A key issue is jobs. The Labor Department is expected to report that employers eliminated 110,000 jobs in June, and the jobless rate is expected to tick up slightly to 9.8 percent, from 9.7 percent in May, according to economists surveyed by Thomson Reuters. That follows a bleak report in May, which showed employers added 431,000 jobs but the vast majority were temporary census positions.
Retailers had a surprisingly solid start to the year as consumers felt better as their stock portfolios rose, but since April, business has slowed. Hastings believes the sluggish trend should continue into June. He believes sweltering heat in this past month wilted sales of summer's trendy fashions as consumers stuck to buying the basics like shorts and tank tops to keep cool.
He also cited a slowdown in revenue in big-ticket items. The big test for consumer spending will be August, when the back-to-school shopping season kicks off, but analysts believe it's going to be tough.
The Conference Board survey is based on a random survey of consumers sent to 5,000 households from June 1 to June 22.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Yes. Absolutely!
I need evidence that it will actually FIX something and not be some B.S. short-term band-aid. In case you haven't noticed, NONE of the stimulus spending to date - Bush or Obama - has resulted in actually fixing anything. It has been nothing but a prolonged series of artificial prop-ups, and when each one wears off, they come back and ask for more money to do it again.
How much stimulus spending was done from 1970 to 2000? Being that I don't recall ever getting a check previously, nor do I recall my parents getting one, I'm gonna go on a limb and say Zero. How many times has it occurred since? 4? 5 now?

While I'm all for providing some support to those who have lost their jobs due to corrupt organizations and other reasons I still believe there needs to be a limit. My stepfather went through the same thing and we got no extra support then so why should people now? He eventually had to end up changing his working field where he is now working in a job in a different field than he worked in for most of his life.
Unemployment doesn't need to become like the welfare system where people just don't care about finding a job because they're still getting money.
However, there is some blame on employers who have job openings that don't want to hire because of uncertainty or aren't accepting applications from those that are out of work.

The King said we need another failed stimulus and you ask if people need more evidence? Wow. That would be hilarious if it weren't so scary.

However, there is some blame on employers who have job openings that don't want to hire because of uncertainty or aren't accepting applications from those that are out of work.
Mostly j/c here...not pointed at you.
Who/what is causing the uncertainty?
Will it be the current and pending tax increases? Healthcare "reform" costs? Operating cost increases from cap & tax?

You brought up some good points here. When it became obvious to me that I was going to be paying out quite a lot of money because of my back, I took a few steps. 1) I started saving money. (Duh) 2) I sold my newer vehicle, because I was still paying on it. 3) I cancelled my cable. 4) I stopped going out to restaurants. 5) I became more miserly. In short, I knew that I was going to be rolling up $4000-5000 in co-pays and deductables ..... so I planned for it. Right now I am collecting on my short term disability insurance that I paid in to through my job. It pays me less than 60% of what I was earning. However, because I paid off what I could ..... and cut out some other things ..... it's nowhere near as painful financially as it could have been. Gee ..... maybe I should just ask the government for a handout to pay my bills with? Just for maybe 2-3 years?
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I was hit by the big layoffs around the year 2001 ... (Gee ... that must of been caused by eight years of Clinton) For six months, I used unemployement benefits, while looking for another engineering job. I reduced my living expenses and debts and got things to a manageable level on a reduced salary. After 6 months, I got off of benefits, and I got a job mopping floors at Costco. It wasn't engineering, but it payed the bills. Eventually I started doing some minor contract work to earn a little more, and then moved to a low level testing job at my current company. Since then, I've worked my way up the food-chain and am back to the same type of job I had before. Long story short ... I found ways to earn an income. I probably could of gone from laid-off to mopping floors in two or three months if I really needed to, but I was holding out hope for landing another engineering job for a few months before realizing the gravity of the situation. But I swear, some people around here can't wipe their rears without government assistance.

A year ago, I took a job (which I don't like), when I could have got on unemployment benefits and made literally about the same amount. But, I was tired of sitting around and the wife was tired of watching me sit around. It sounds corny, but I feel better about myself knowing I'm doing my share. When I was in my 20s I woulda sat on my arse. How I miss those days....

I'm sure that many of us have similar histories.
When I was younger, I lost a good paying job. While I looked for other work, I took a full time minimum wage job, and also worked in a store owned by a friend of mine. He helped me out by letting me have the time to go to interviews when I had one.
The situation was not easy. I worked 70 hours per week between 2 jobs to support myself. It's what I had to do in order to get by.
I have never taken a single day of unemployment or government assistance as an adult. There have been really difficult times along the way, especially when I was younger. However, the lessons I learned as a child and young man taught me that you just have to work harder when times get tough. It just astonishes me that there are so many people who do not share this way of thinking, and who expect to be supported by their neighbors for years on end despite being able bodied, and perfectly capable of hitting the pavement each and every day.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

If the last stimulus worked as promised...we would not so quickly need another one...now would we?

I'm curious about a couple of things mac.
Please answer, in your own words.
First, has the money from O's first stimulus package been spent yet? All of the money?
Secondly, if JOBS is the number one priority - which at this point I agree - why is the gov't. penalizing, and in some cases (health care "reform", cap and trade, etc) attempting to penalize companies for the jobs they have? Can you answer that?
My guess is you've never been in charge, or started a company - you know - a business that pays taxes, pays employees - and gets its revenue from the product they manufacture or retail.
You want jobs? Give businesses breaks.....give them INCENTIVE to hire people, create jobs.........you know, jobs where the employees work and pay taxes. It's amazingly simple really.
But no - you and your "I'm for the working class" crap - all you come up with is "let's extend unemployment for MORE than 2 years". That's not FOR the working class - that is against the working class. Being FOR the working class would mean trying to open up jobs for the working class.
Why is it that in this recession - gov't. is doing most of the hiring?
You do realize that gov't. can't pay people without having the money, correct? You do realize that a gov't. job that pays, say $30,000 requires that much plus from people/business in the private sector, right?
You do realize that increasing unemployment benefits means that those with jobs have to pay more of their earned income in order to pay the unemployment, right?
You sir, are ANTI working class and you don't even know it.

I'm absolutely sure there isn't one single sole factor or person who is responsible for this mess we are in right now. The blame can lay from the past presidents, congress, wall street, joe the plumber, CoachB, and whoever else is the current blame or scapegoat.
The problem is everyone just needs to see eye to eye to somehow get the country back on stable ground.

Ignore him, he refuses to acknowledge that 90% of this board bashed Bush while he was making his stupid decisions as well, but since we don't currently bow before King Obama, we must be Bush extremists.

If Obama really cared about creating jobs, then he can do what his admin is saying is impossible.. Secure the border... Building a long fence will create a ton of jobs as well as kicking out illegals out of the country would do.. it will open up jobs.. but want does Obama want to do?? Grant Amnesty to millions of illegals here to only add more to our problem.. If you stop unemployment and kick out illegals, there are plenty of jobs out there.. With no safety net, you will see a lot of people going for those jobs that illegals had not to mention the ones illegals have that Americans did have and wanted to do in the first place.
You shouldn't be placing Obama on a high pedestal of wanting to fix our economy as you are.. because he isn't doing much besides trying to throw money at the problem which is not going to do anything unless you do other things as well..

I love you mac, I really do. I love you because one thing I always know for sure.. everytime you go off on one of your rants about supporting the "hard working middle class Americans" that us RWers don't support.. it is always.. ALWAYS.. followed up with some article about how the government needs to give stuff away. They need to give away more stimulus money, they need to give away more unemployment benefits, they need to give away healthcare, they need to give away tax refunds to people that don't pay taxes.. always mac. As sure as the sun will rise in the east mac, your definition of a hard working middle class American is a poor slob standing around with his hand out.. and I refuse to think of a hard working middle class American in those terms.... since I am one.

RocketOptimist...I see you are new here....you were not a board member when "CoachB" was playing his lame game...unless you are someone from the past signing up under a new screen name? ....or you have been lurking for a long, long time?
Just thought it was a little odd that someone new would mention CoachB.
Welcome to the board...

but aren't we talking about a group of unemployed people who have exhausted 99 weeks of unemployment benefits? At what point does the benefit become a disincentive to finding employment?
^^^^^
99 weeks
Putting the pork in this bill aside .... 99 weeks .... nearly 2 years.
I'm the heartless one on my Facebook wall for pointing this out. The thing is though that my sense of obiligation to my creditors would not allow me to remain jobless and need the extension. In fact I would do everything I am capable of to not need the first 99.
99 weeks

DC...not picking on you...just can't help but feel that many on here view unemployment benefits as some kind of welfare handout...IT IS NOT!
From the Department of Labor website... web page
Unemployment Insurance (UI)
The Department of Labor's Unemployment Insurance (UI) programs provide unemployment benefits to eligible workers who become unemployed through no fault of their own, and meet certain other eligibility requirements.
Purpose
In general, the Federal-State Unemployment Insurance Program provides unemployment benefits to eligible workers who are unemployed through no fault of their own (as determined under State law), and meet other eligibility requirements of State law.
Unemployment insurance payments (benefits) are intended to provide temporary financial assistance to unemployed workers who meet the requirements of State law.
Each State administers a separate unemployment insurance program within guidelines established by Federal law.
Eligibility for unemployment insurance, benefit amounts and the length of time benefits are available are determined by the State law under which unemployment insurance claims are established.
In the majority of States, benefit funding is based solely on a tax imposed on employers. (Three (3) States require minimal employee contributions.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTICE THE PART where it says, "provides unemployment benefits to eligible workers who are unemployed through no fault of their own"
NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN...!
It sure is not the unemployed's fault that they got laid off, is it?
If our Government wants to give away our manufacturing jobs to slave labor countries like China, and act like it's no big deal, then I don't want to hear those same (GOP) "politicians" bitch about extending benefits to those Americans who can't find a job, in part because those "politicians" thought it was a great idea to "offshore" America's manufacturing jobs.
Seems to me that the GOP is trying to have it both ways...they should approve extending unemployment benefits to American workers who are laid off, NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN, and hope and pray that American workers don't ask the GOP why they thought shipping American jobs to China was a good idea.

Notice also where it says "TEMPORARY" benefits. That's temporary - if you don't know what it means, look it up. It sure as hell doesn't mean 2 years worth of payments - at least not to this working class american.
You see mac - I AM working class america - the person you profess to care about. BS.
Just where do these "benefits" come from? Oh, that's right - working class Americans, like me. If you can't see that you are beyond help.
Any answers in the other thread to the questions I asked of you?

Since you decided to go off on this tangent, tax cuts to businesses encourage said businesses to grow => create new jobs. Extending unemployment means people can stay unemployed for over two years.
