The Utah Jazz have quickly moved into the lead to acquire Al Jefferson and were actively working Monday night to complete a deal with Minnesota, according to NBA front-office sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Jazz and Timberwolves are on the verge of completing a trade that would slot Jefferson's contract into the $14 million trade exception that Utah created earlier this week in its sign-and-trade deal with Chicago for Carlos Boozer.

Jefferson

The full extent of the package that Minnesota would receive in return was not immediately known, as one source told ESPN.com that the two teams were still discussing the terms of draft picks that Utah would send to seal the deal.

But because its trade exception is large enough to absorb Jefferson's $13 million salary next season, Utah can complete a trade for Jefferson without sending back any players to the Wolves. Sources with knowledge of Minnesota's thinking said Monday that the Wolves' main aim in shopping Jefferson in recent weeks has been securing multiple future first-round picks and taking back as little salary if possible.

Via his Twitter account Monday night, Utah CEO Greg Miller wrote: "I just approved a Jazz roster move that I'm very excited about. Planning to share details tomorrow."

The Dallas Mavericks were widely believed to be the league's most serious suitor for Jefferson in recent days and moved closer to a deal with the Wolves over the weekend than the teams previously had been, according to sources with knowledge of the talks.

But the Dallas-Minnesota talks hit another roadblock, sources said, when the Mavericks insisted that the Wolves take on the contracts of DeShawn Stevenson and Matt Carroll in addition to the pieces Minnesota really wanted: Erick Dampier's non-guaranteed $13 million contract and two conditional future first-round picks.

Including Stevenson and Carroll would lessen the financial hit involved for Dallas in absorbing the three years and $42 million remaining on Jefferson's deal, but sources say that Utah -- apparently determined to replace Boozer's inside scoring with Jefferson's accomplished low-post game -- has presented a more palatable offer to Minnesota.

Yet it was not immediately known what specific assets Utah would be willing to part with in a Jefferson deal in addition to making its trade exception available for Minnesota to realize significant payroll relief. The Jazz have lost Boozer and Kyle Korver in free agency and have seven days to decide whether to match the five-year, $34 million offer sheet Portland has tendered to guard Wesley Matthews.

Although Utah has Paul Millsap primed to replace Boozer, responding to Boozer's departure by immediately bringing in Jefferson would be a strong statement of intent to star guard Deron Williams, who raised eyebrows in February when he expressed frustration regarding the salary-dumping trade of guard Ronnie Brewer to Memphis.

In a thinly veiled challenge to management, Williams said of uncertainty about Utah's spending plans this summer: "That's why I signed a three-year deal."

As recently as the summer of 2007, Jefferson was the centerpiece of Minnesota's trade with Boston that sent Kevin Garnett to the Celtics. The 25-year-old played in 76 games last season after a knee injury limited him to 50 in 2008-09, but it's been an open secret in the league for weeks the Wolves have decided to trade away their best down-low scorer to ease a frontcourt logjam that got even more crowded Monday when they officially completed the acquisition of former No. 2 overall pick Michael Beasley from Miami.

The Wolves, in addition to Beasley, still have Kevin Love at power forward and have signed two centers (Darko Milicic and Nikola Pekovic) in free agency. Wolves management, sources said, made the decision to break up the Jefferson-Love tandem largely because of their defensive struggles and concerns about Jefferson's fit in coach Kurt Rambis' triangle offense.

"There's a lot of interest right now in Al because most of the major free agents, if not all of the major free agents, are signed," Timberwolves president David Kahn told reporters in Minneapolis after the Wolves completed the Beasley trade with Miami.

Kahn also revealed that he had breakfast with Jefferson on Saturday, saying: "I told him I admired him for his professionalism. I hope it isn't awkward. I told him we would do what's best for him and best for us."

Jefferson is the last remaining former Celtic on the roster from the Garnett trade, preceded out the Wolves' exit door by Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff and Sebastian Telfair.

Sad to see him go, but I will applaud him when he comes back to Cleveland. Something I will not do for LeBenedict.

It will be weird seeing Z play in another uniform.

I will hate to root against Z. He's the kind of guy that could have left for the Hornets or the Bobcats and I could have wished him well and hoped he and his new team did well.. sorry Z, not in Miami.

very funny possibility though: Heat come to Cleveland for the first time. Huge boooos during introductions and play. Then, Z comes off the bench and receives a standing-O. I would love that.

Calderon is back on the market. Bobcats pulled out.
He would look great in Byron Scott’s system.
(I still don’t believe Gilbert will tank and use the OKC method of building a team)

I bet he starts, not sure who else they'll be able to get to play center.
I also wish he retires with no rings. At first I thought differently about Z going to Miami, but then I concluded he is basically signing up for what LBJ did to Cleveland, he above anyone else should realize what LBJ did. And I have a hard time respecting that.

He will be getting booed by me, until he returns as a Cav.

I agree. I dont understand why is getting a free pass from some of you when he essentially is doing the same thing LeBron did. Heck, it might even be worse because even with the fallout from LeBron's decision he is still making the choice to go there.

If Z really loved Cleveland as much as he says he does, he would go somewhere else and not follow Public Enemy #1 to a "NY Yankee" style championship.

JMO.

I just wonder how long ago LBJ started recruiting him for Miami. Right after his buyout is my guess.

Does anyone know or have a list of the companies who employ LBJ as a spokesman?

I can think of:
Vitamin Water
Nike
State Farm (?)
.
.
.

I would just like to know so no one in my household does any business with them.

bubbilicious, upper deck, and mcdonald's (although they lost their nba license this year, and can only do non nba logo stuff, which is college/hs)

and actually take out vitamin water and add coke, since vitamin water and sprite fall under those.

luckily for me, i don't drink pop and i don't chew gum with sugar in it (sugarless elixir for me) and i don't use state farm (although both of my accidents have been at the fault of the other driver, whom both had state farm, they really are wonderful to work with if the other person has them)

and i don't eat mcdonald's anymore other than once or twice a year where i just gotta get a thing of mcnuggets with sweet and sour.

And a few other reasons to boot ...

- Z didn't quit on his team in the playoffs this year and say "I spoil people". He did nothing but work hard and do whatever his team needed to do.

- Z never had any say on who joined or left the team, so if he leaves it's not like he's saying, "Enjoy that crappy roster I helped put together for you".

- Z hasn't led the front office on. He stated almost immediately after the season that if the team didn't think he could play a major role that he would probably move on, and the FO was aware of that. They've had plenty of time to consider what they want to do to replace him.

- Z is in the twilight of his career, when fans are generally cool with allowing a player to go "ring hunt" and usually hope that they succeed. See players like Ray Bourque, Gary Payton, etc. He's not in his prime where if he kicks the team to the curb with zero warning, they are set back 10 years.

- Z has already show major appreciation to Cleveland fans.

i agree, i have no problem with z going anywhere, including miami.

i already don't care about lbj, anymore, time to move on. ready for football, hoping for the best with the cavs, but i understand it's gonna be a long process, and even longer if dan gilbert doesn't want to rebuild.

Me too....I'm focused on the Browns. I probably won't even watch the NBA at all next year (or maybe ever). No big loss, they were one of my fringe sports anyway. I watch more football and hockey.

Might try soccer more.

i wish i could have like 5 minutes with dan gilbert to try and convince him to just start it over.

i would rather draft through the lottery a possible star player, as well as another guy so that you have 2 stars.

durant and westbrook
bogut and jennings
rose and noah (i know noah is no superstar, but you get my drift)
roy and aldridge
gordon and griffin
and who knows maybe evans and cousins (maybe)

you gotta get that kinda luck. then dan gilbert's passion and spending come into play, then you surround those guy with your mo williams and antawn jamisons of the world. then you got something. then you star player can't cry about havin no one.

I heard this one dude on their team is crazy good....something Haaskivi. Witness!

Seriously, I don't know. I don't have GOLTV at home. I'll have to look around a bit more. I'd say the Chicago Fire but I don't know anything about the MLS.

Agreed. If either of you (Sperg/Punch) wants a little background on the team, PM me and I'll get you caught up. Good team to pull for with no "frontrunner" aspect.

I agree with all that, but the bottom line for me is he is following LBJ to Miami for the same underlining reason LBJ is going to Miami. I would be all for him going to LA, or ORL, or heck even Boston. Going to Miami with everything that has gone down just doesn't work for me.

If these players are going to collude and build their own dream teams then we need to come up with an acronym for "NBA" that is appropriate.. what do you think?

We did trade Z last year. We took the chance that he would be cut in a salary dumping move. I don't think Z owes us anything. I will root for Z no matter where he goes. I just hope he doesn't win a ring with Miami.

As someone pointed out earlier...We don't even know if we offered hm a contract.

The "IWWA".

I won't watch anymore. That will learn them. The only true way to get back at the NBA is to stop caring/watching.

I agree
Sounds like we have a puppet here, with the puppet master pulling on his strings......correct me if I am wrong, but didn't he promise a ring for his team this......at the end of
The season before this last season.
