Vikings fans love him, actually. My wife is one and she has a group of them over every sunday to watch the games, and none of them are mad at this news, even truly believe, and most are just happy that had good QB play for one year and stuck it to Green Bay.

No development regarding the career of Brett Favre is official until the official Favre family scrivener, Al Jones of the Biloxi Sun-Herald, chimes in.
Jones reports, citing an unnamed family source, that no decision has been made by Favre regarding whether he'll retire for the third annual year.
"Brett has not made a commitment to play or a decision to return at this point," the source said.
So what in the hell is going on here?
Since Favre himself has remained silent, and since we believe the reports that he has advised team officials and teammates that he's retiring, this whole thing could be a power play aimed at getting more money for Favre or, more likely, getting the team off his ass about showing up for the third preseason game.
Indeed, we've got a feeling that the organization had been pressuring him to show up for the preseason home opener, and that Favre finally decided to make it known that he simply won't show up at all. By never acknowledging it himself, he'll never look like he was lying.
And so the end result will be more money for Favre and the ability to show up on the Friday before the first game, giving him six days to prepare to face the Saints on September 9.

Family source: Favre has made no decision
GULFPORT — A family source told the Sun Herald this afternoon that Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre has made no decision regarding a 20th season in the NFL.
“Brett has not made a commitment to play or a decision to return at this point,” the family source said.
Favre, his agent Bus Cook, nor Vikings coach Brad Childress have commented on the news that broke earlier today that a source said Favre informed the team he would retire.
Childress said at a press conference after training camp practice that until he “heard it from the horse’s mouth” he wouldn’t believe the rumors.
A couple of comments on Scott Favre’s Facebook page have not been responded to by the quarterback’s brother, who did tell the Sun Herald he has not heard from Brett, either.
“I have heard no truth to that (retirement),” Scott Favre said. “I know he can still play and I want him to keep playing.”
The Sun Herald will update this story as more details become available.

Listening to a sports program, I was not aware that there are ongoing contract talks going on between Favre and the Vikes.
It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out what is going on here...leaks and rumors with a purpose. I believe the Vikes coach Childress said when he hears it from Favre, then he will believe it.
Obviously Childress knows what is going between the two "contract" camps, regarding Favre.

They should make "The Decision" a regular program. Each week they pick a diva to take an hour to announce where they're going to play, whether they'll retire, what they want for breakfast, etc. Don't know why ESPN is still pretending to be a news organization. Might as well just go whole hog.

If I was Favre, I would be seen playing with the kids ..... go throw the football around a bit at the local high school ..... release statements like "the knee/arm/whatever is feeling so much better than I expected" .......and just generally tease the hell out of the press right up until the season opened .... and then say .... "Hey, I told you that I retired. I don't know why you wouldn't listen".

Just another jackass putting himself above the team. If he is retiring, way to be professional to you team, saying that your not coming back now that all other options are already passed. Gee, where have I seen this before. And yes, i'm being bitter.
If he's not retiring, if I was on that team, when he did show up, it'd be one big "go to hell". Your a member of a team, what one guy has to go through, every one has to go through. No one is bigger then the team.

I'm late to this party, but I'm going to say the same thing now that I said when I first heard the "news."
The only time I'm going to give serious consideration to any report that says Favre is retiring is when I also read he's turned his retirement papers in to the league. Only then will I believe it.
As for Favre, he's a POS who is holding an entire organization by the marbles. Getting in with Favre is like getting in with the mob: It becomes their rules and their way or no way.
He's a joke, and the Vikes have no recourse but to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants.

On one hand I understand the desire to keep playing. Heck, who of us on this board wouldn't give nearly anything to go back and play one more game at whatever sport we love. It can't be easy to walk away from something that a person loves. It doesn't just happen in sports.
That being said, it's not just about him. He, as was said above, needs to understand that he's basically held a franchise hostage. I also have to believe that the Vikes had every reason to believe he'd be back or they'd have gone out and gotten someone else. Either way, he needs to make a decisiona and go with it.
If it's his ankle, then say, I'd like to come back but the ankle's not ready. For that matter, he could use the ankle as his excuse to skip camp and come in later like last year. It's just so tired at this point, and I'm a guy who loves to watch Favre play.
There may be people who have more talent than you, but there's no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.

I have to say, though, unlike what he was doing to the Packers, at least the Vikings knowingly signed up for this BS, so they can't really complain. Doing this crap to the Packers, who had been loyal to him for so long and did everything they could for him, was unfair.
It's like that POS that plays for the Heat. If he pulls this same BS in six years, it's not like they didn't know what they were signing up for.

POS maybe...probably....either way it is debateable depending on what side you are on with him...lol...But he is NOT holding any organization by the marbles. The Vikings are absolute willing partners in this venture. No one has a gun to their heads. And it is completely their choice to allow Brett this time to make a choice. They can prepare for life without him...or perhaps there is a backdoor deal that has already been done. And they just don't want to set some precedent in the league concerning a signed player and allowing them to skip training camp.....thin line maybe...everybody may know it....maybe...but they still have to play the game and say the things they have to say......
Or we all could be completely overeacting and maybe everything is true...his ankle is not coming along the way he thought and he just doesn't know.....
All I know is that Minnesota is not a victim here...they are a willing participant.

I can't agree with that, Pete, and I'll tell you why I feel that way.
Chili is a WCO guy, but in terms of how he runs his version, he's an ultra-conservative kind of guy.
So why is that important?
The packages he'll install if Favre is there are very different than the packages he'll install if Jackson or Rosenfells is taking the snaps.
There's another factor here: Money.
The Vikes have, reportedly, upped their offer to Favre to the tune of $16 million plus incentives, compared to the former $13 mil he was slated to make. This indicates they believe this is a money-grab kind of situation, and in that context, Favre IS holding a gun to the organizations head.
I get that his ankle may not be right. But I also get that Favre is holding them hostage very-much in the way he held the Packers hostage. Eventually, the Packers took their nuts back and told Favre to shove-off. The difference is that they were smart enough to have their "Franchise QB" ready to go. The Vikes are left with only Jackson and Sage, and I doubt they'd be content with those two if Favre wasn't on-board.
As an aside, I FULLY agree that the Vikes are willing participants, and as such aren't true victims. However, many people who have fallen in with the mob by choice have still been victimized by them.

Agreed, Groza. I feel he should be nominated as the odds on (and off again!( favorite for lifetime achievement award for longest-running soap opera award (The Suddsy might be a good name). i figured this was a joke, he texted team mates? then no team mates admit getting anything . . . sounds like somone is getting info from a magic 8-ball, all signs point to no.
I personally still love favre, he drives 90% of sports fans nuts, it's fun to watch people so emotionally invested, as if it reallymakes a difference in our lives. If somone can have the power to twist a sports network around thier finger, good job.

this just in from my league sources. favre on the plane ride back to Minnesota has decided, due to unsalty peanuts, he will not return to the vikings acording to kicker ryan longwell.
