Slow is something you won't have to worry about with him until he's about 40.

He's an athletic freak of nature.

The problem with Rogers is that he doesn't like to play nose the way he should, ie, just eat up blockers. He likes to get into the backfield. That's why he's a better bet at end, particularly if a linebacker on his side has containment. That way he can just get at it without creating a gaping hole for a RB to run through in the middle.

I don't disagree with that at all.

When he doesn't want to be blocked, there isn't anyone in this league that can block him 1-on-1, and it's arguable that he can't be blocked 2-on-1, either.

However, that ability doesn't help us with him as the NT. With him at DE, however, and Rubin at NT.... we have a true NT, and Rogers is freed up to be the very bad man that he is.

My thoughts exactly.

As a DE he'll require double and maybe triple blocking schemes from the O. If Rubin can tie up the C&G that means a T and TE or RB must block Rogers.

Rogers is pretty good at shucking blockers too. So he might easily blow around G&T combos on the outside...

If the opposing O struggles to block him, that will open up both sides for blitzing!

This should be fun to watch.

Rubin can quite easily command a double, which means that the guard that will double him likely will NOT be the one to the side of Rogers as he WILL be getting a double from the other guard and tackle, which leaves Robaire 1-on-1 with a tackle, which leaves that side open to an OLB vs. whatever is left behind to chip - a RB or TE.

It could be VERY fun to watch this

And I almost forgot...

If he's rotating at DE and NT instead of starting at NT; he can take more plays off keeping him fresh and he could show up on any given play at any position (R-DE NT L-DE)...

That's hard to game plan for right there.

Well the chip blocker would still have to figure out if the blitzer is coming from behind Smith or Rogers.

I mean if the Tackle breaks off Rogers to pick up the blitzer, THAT Guard is DONE.

I'm worried about Shaun. I hope I'm wrong but I don't forsee him having a good year. Something tells me he's too old and slow to really make a difference. I guess we'll find out soon enough....if he's still getting double-teamed, good, that's freeing up someone behind him. Something tells me he'll be man-to-man in most games.

Again, hope I'm wrong.

I hope you are wrong also,, But what's happened to make you feel that way.. I mean,, are you feeling that way because he missed all camp? He did that last year also and played pretty well until he got injured... Just wondering what's causing your feelings.

He makes others better, because he demands double teams or do you also dispute that fact.

Oh and if you agree that he does demand double teams, then you have to also agree with the above statement.

I hope he meant that we'll get better because we're basically replacing Corey Williams (who was present during that 4 win streak), with Shaun Rogers (who is much better than Corey Williams.

Rogers also has a knack for blocking kicks. I think this was one time Mangini's logic will work in his favor. Teams right now don't know where he'll line up, that can cause big problems for them.

Now that he is back and the season is starting, look for Ryan to turn up the volume. He and Mangini haven't showed anything on defense yet, but ended last year with an effective scheme. I have guarded optimism about the defense, I just don't see it not improving from last year. With better tackling and coverage on the back end, they could surprise.

I think with Rogers in the line up along with some of the other LBers we should be a better front 7 when all the peaces are in place (DQ) and add to that better play on the corners against both the pass and run.
I think Ward is going to be a good Safety in this League, but this year is going to be a learning experience for him.
Brodney Pool was a pretty good Safety and there will be times he is missed and other times we will jump for joy after TJ has just knocked the snot bubbles out of someone and forced an incompletion.

It's not a far stretch to think that we will be a better defense than a year ago.
I think that they will.

I think that we will be a better defense but not by a wide margin because most of the gains were in the secondary with youth.. youth that will be exposed from time to time...

In order for us to make a big leap on defense we need 1 bona fide pass rusher that can get to the QB consistently without gimmicks and packages and crap.. a guy that can just line up and beat his man... and we need a beast ILB that can stuff the run and blitze up the gut, I think DQ is a very solid support guy but he's not THE guy in the middle of a 3-4...

We sure didn't see it in preseason based upon the reports, but I think that was the hope with Fujita & Gocong.... though we appear to be using them in totally opposite ways from what I would have expected.

i really hope that the preseason defensive performance was planned. maybe i'm just optimistic but i wonder if they called obvious blitzes, had minimal sacks, to help test the young secondary. basically, seeing what could happen against us if the blitz doesn't get to the qb in time and to force feed ward/haden on what they need to do. again, just optimistic, but i really hope that's the case.

I think we have not yet seen what our front 7 will play like.

Have we seen Rogers lined up next to Rubin on base downs?

Our LBers have also not had the benefit of rushing the passer with Rogers clapsing the pocket.
Roth and Benard could benefit by having Rogers in the game.
Roth compiled his 4 sacks last year, with Rogers on the IR.
Benard seems poised to have a break out season.
His development I think has allowed us to cut our losses with David Veikune after only two training camps.

Gocong I think is still a mystery and until I see him in battle I don't want to be premature in my judgment of him.

The Coach's must see something in him and are willing to put him in the starting lineup.

I would not be surprised to see Trusnik in nickel defenses too.

In short..... I don't think we have that one guy that can get double digit sacks year in and year out, but I see some guys who together might do well as a unit.

After all of that.....

I think that our offense will help the defense more than any one man on that unit.

I'm really hoping that Rogers lines up on the same side with Benard...

Roth can hold his side down.. especially with the run.. Add Rogers in the mix on passing downs, and Benard should be able to shoot right through.

I second this. Not only because it will help Bernard's pass rush, but it may also hide Elam's weakness against the run at least.

I'm not worried about the right side as much because Ward is behind Roth and Ward has been pretty solid in run support thus far.

By getting in the face of the QB and not giving him a pocket to step up to avoid the outside rushers is key to a good pass rush, because the tackles count on help from the QB by stepping up in the pocket and the OT's jobs are made that much easier.

Conversely if you give the QB no pocket to step up it makes the OT's jobs that much harder and he will either have to hold/tackle the rusher or allow the sack with a good rush.

He makes others better, because he demands double teams or do you also dispute that fact.

Oh and if you agree that he does demand double teams, then you have to also agree with the above statement.

That statement in no way even insinuates that that is what I meant. He's not the reason we lost, but in no way did he make the players around him bettter when we finally did start winning....that can't be that difficult to understand......can it?

When someone comments about players who make others around him better usually it means that there are some intangibles involved, not just how well he plays as an individual.

So yes, I can agree SR demands double teams. That may create an opportunity for someone else to shine, but it doesn't mean it's gonna happen. So, if you believe that you will agree that SR doesn't make people around him better.

Oh boy, no I'll stick with my original statement.

When Rogers blows up the OL it inspires (sparks) others on the team.

And yes players who demand double teams do help other around him.
Football 101.

I am sincing that you do not care for Mr. Rogers, but fail to agree with what should be obvious.
Who is to say that we wouldn't have played better in the last 4 games with Rogers.
I tend to believe that we would have and will.

Cleveland Browns’ big man Shaun Rogers back

BEREA, Ohio - Veering to the middle of Cleveland's locker room, which was buzzing as players dressed for practice, nose tackle Shaun Rogers(notes) leaned most of his humongous frame on an industrial fan serving as his temporary podium.

Impressive fan. Imposing man.

Arguably Cleveland's best player and easily it's most dominant, Rogers, the Browns' bigger-than-big man returned to practice this week after sitting out training camp with a leg injury that cost him the final five games last season. He's not in game shape yet, but he's getting there.

Beware, Buccaneers. You, too, Chiefs, Ravens and others.

"He's 380 pounds and runs like the wind," Browns Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas(notes) said. "There aren't many people like that."

In case they had forgotten what a disruptive force Rogers can be to an offense, the six-foot-three, 350-and-then-some pounder, spent Wednesday's practice tossing Cleveland's linemen around like they were stuffed animals. With Rogers clogging the middle, tying up two blockers at a time, the Browns' first-team offense barely budged the ball.

Evading Mount Rogers ain't easy.

"He was excited. That's the big guy," defensive end Robaire Smith(notes) said. "It was great to see him out there. It's too bad he had to throw some of our teammates around before the game."

Before agreeing to speak with reporters Thursday, Rogers had not formally addressed the media in nearly one year. He broke his left leg in a Nov. 29 game at Cincinnati and had surgery, although the team has not commented on the operation of severity of his injury.

Not fully recovered, Rogers was sidelined all summer, relegated to riding a stationary bike as the Browns prepped for the season. On Wednesday, the team practised inside their field house, which was balmier than usual. Coach Eric Mangini turned up the thermostat to simulate Central Florida's swampy conditions that the Browns will likely encounter on Sunday in Tampa Bay.

Rogers felt the heat.

"Sucking wind," he said.

After backup Ahtyba Rubin(notes) played so well while filling in for Rogers late last season, the Browns have kicked around playing them together, with Rubin at nose tackle and Rogers shifted to end in Cleveland's 3-4 scheme. Rogers took all his snaps at nose tackle on Wednesday, but said he's open to moving outside.

"I'll do whatever they ask of me," Rogers said. "It's still a process that we're going through to try and get the best me out there. So, whatever I'm allowed to do (because of the injury) and whatever they think is best, is what we're going to do. If that's what they ask me to do.

"It's D-line. As long as they don't ask me to play wideout, we'll be all right."

Rogers' best hasn't translated into team success during his NFL career.

Losing has a steely grip on him.

In his nine seasons with Detroit and Cleveland, Rogers' record is a combined 40-104 with zero winning seasons. His best year came in 2007, when the Lions went 7-9. The losses have resulted in Rogers being labelled "the best player on bad teams."

He'd like to change that.

"Every year I want to be on a winner," Rogers said before pausing. "It takes an individual — let's see how can I put this so ya'll don't mess this up. Individually, you have to do your part so providing the best me I feel is always the right way to go."

"It's always frustrating to lose, but again, this game builds character in so many forms. All I do is play hard and try to win."

Cleveland's defense actually improved while the 31-year-old Rogers was sidelined last season. With him, the Browns allowed 159 rushing yards per game. Without him, they gave up 110. The drop could be a coincidence or a sign that Cleveland could survive with Rubin at nose tackle.

Asked about Rogers' inside impact, Mangini didn't take long to shift his praise toward Rubin.

"He's got good size and he ties up a lot of blockers as well," Mangini said. "That's what you are looking for from that spot.

Rogers has mentored Rubin, a sixth-round draft pick in 2008 who anchored Cleveland's defense during the season-ending four-game winning streak that saved Mangini's job. During that stretch, the Browns held their opponent under 100 yards three times and allowed just one individual 100-yard rushing performance.

"I'm real proud of him," Rogers said. "We've worked together and I've tried to give him as much knowledge as I can and he's using it and he's done very well."

Browns linebacker Scott Fujita(notes), who came over as a free agent from New Orleans, only heard about Rogers and seen him on tape before lining up behind him at practice.

Fujita was floored.

"For him to come in and do the things he can do with the amount of power he has, it's pretty special," he said.

Alex Mack(notes) can attest to that. Cleveland's second-year centre cut his teeth working against Rogers, a gifted athlete who can still dunk. Mack said Rogers belongs to a small, elite fraternity of nose tackles along with Kris Jenkins(notes) of the New York Jets and Vince Wilfork(notes) of the New England Patriots.

"You see how big he is and someone who moves as fast as he does, it's hard to stop," Mack said. "A lot of guys are big and run stoppers and other guys are quick. He's kind of both, which makes it way harder to deal with him. He's moving fast, he's heavy.

"He's the best I've ever seen."

Thanks for the article.

I don't know that I would agree with the author as far as Rogers being our best player [Cribbs, Joe Thomas]

We have two of the best NT's in the league imo.
I think the both of them a long with Smith would make a pretty stout run DL.

Frankly I hope that Rogers is a better DE than he was NT.

He had 6 1/2 sacks in 2 years as NT.

Hopefully he can do that this year as a DE.

...He wasn't supposed to be getting sacks as an NT, he was supposed to eat double and triple teams and he did a pretty damn good job at it. His only flaw was he penetrated too often and opened a lane for a back to run through.

Maybe I should re-phrase .....

He was wasted as a NT.

He did a generally good job as a NT ..... but that's not where his talents lie. I think that he also got suckered a lot into breaking his responsibilities when he thought he had an opportunity for a sack .... and left holes in the defense.

Hopefully we should be able to use his pass rushing abilities better from the DE position than from the NT spot.

Browns’ Rogers looks like old self, feels ready

Scott Petrak
09/10/10

BEREA — Linebacker Scott Fujita had never practiced with nose tackle Shaun Rogers in front of him prior to Wednesday.

“Some things he did were pretty impressive,” Fujita said Thursday. “That amount of power and athleticism is pretty special.”

End Robaire Smith has played next to Rogers for two years, but still came away impressed with the Wednesday performance. Rogers missed training camp and the preseason as he recovered from a broken ankle suffered Nov. 29 against Cincinnati.

“It was great to see him out there,” Smith said. “It’s too bad he had to throw some of our teammates around before the game.”

According to the players, Rogers dominated the line of scrimmage, severely limiting the offense’s ability to run. The Browns hope he can have the same instant impact Sunday in the opener at Tampa Bay.

“It most definitely feels good,” he said. “I love to play the game. It’s always encouraging and fun to be out there.”

The cameras, microphones and tape recorders converged on Rogers in the middle of the locker room Thursday before practice. He doesn’t enjoy interviews, but was about to formally speak with reporters for the first time in more than nine months.

The special occasion: His return to practice and the start of the season.

To make himself more comfortable as the mob moved closer — and to get a little personal space — Rogers leaned on a fan at least 6 feet wide. A giant man and a giant fan. Both move pretty fast once they get warmed up.

“It’s still a process that we’re going through to try and get the best me out there,” he said. “So, whatever I’m allowed to do and whatever they think is best is what we’re going to do.”

Rogers was limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday, but coach Eric Mangini said he’s following a natural progression. Mangini expects him to play against the Buccaneers and he’s listed as the starter on the depth chart.

Smith said Rogers looked like his normal freakish self Wednesday.

“Shaun being Shaun,” he said. “When he’s not in there, there’s a big void.”

In size and skill.

Rogers is listed at 6-foot-4, 350 pounds but is probably closer to 380 after missing training camp. The forecast calls for the temperature to be around 90 degrees in Tampa, Fla., so he might need more breaks than usual.

That isn’t the issue it once was, with Ahtyba Rubin proving himself a capable replacement in the final month last season. Rubin will see considerable time at nose tackle, allowing Rogers to play some end and be one of the pass-rushing linemen in nickel situations.

“Rubin is a solid nose tackle and it looks like he’s going to play this game for a long time,” Rogers said. “I’m real proud of him. We’ve worked together and I’ve tried to give him as much knowledge as I can, and he’s using it and he’s done very well.”

Rogers has spent his career on the interior of the line, but said he’s willing to try end.

“If that’s what they ask me to do,” he said. “It’s D-line. As long as they don’t ask me to play wideout, we’ll be all right.”

Center Alex Mack caught a break when Rogers spent camp on the stationary bike. No one needs to take that pounding on a daily basis.

“You see how big he is and someone who moves as fast as he does, it’s hard to stop,” Mack said. “A lot of guys are big and run stoppers and other guys are quick. He’s kind of both, which makes it way harder to deal with him.

“He’s moving fast, he’s heavy. He’s the best I’ve ever seen.”

Despite the unique talents that made him a Pro Bowler in 2004, ’05 and ’08, Rogers, 31, hasn’t played on a winning team since he left the University of Texas. In seven years with Detroit and two with the Browns, he’s 40-104. His best finish was 7-9.

“Every year I want to be on a winner,” he said. “It takes individual, let’s see how can I put this so ya’ll don’t mess this up. Individually, you have to do your part, so providing the best me I feel is always the right way to go.

“It’s always frustrating to lose, but again, this game builds character in so many forms. All I do is play hard and try to win.”

Veteran offensive lineman Floyd “Pork Chop” Womack walked by after a few minutes and interrupted, giving Rogers a chance to end the interview session. He jumped on it.

“What took you so long?” he asked Womack.

We have two of the best NT's in the league imo.

EEaaassssyy...

Rogers isn't even a true nose tackle and Rubin has started a total of what? 5 games?

I call'em like I see'em

Just because Rogers can play DT, does not in it self mean he is not a NT, because that's what he is now.
Just ask any center you know

Except for the fact that Rogers is awful at playing his assignments at NT, I agree with you. Physically, Rogers is a monster at NT and unguardable...unless you take him out of the play with his want to make a play.

you had a good run Hank.

I'll bet Alex Mack was very happy to see Shaun Rogers on the sidelines 'cycling' this pre-season. Rubin is a load as well, but at least he doesn't have to worry about the power and speed combo that is Shaun Rogers.

I think Rogers and Rubin (we need a nickname or at least a McDonalds sandwhich) will both spend time at NT and Rogers will spend some time at DE as well.

Also, I am looking forward to our 'jumbo' defensive package that will likely feature more of a 4-3 look with: Robaire, Rubin, Rogers, and Coleman (we need to trade Coleman for an 'R' named DL). That look wouldn't be good all game long, but man it could cause problems as a change-up look.

I thought Shaun Rogers played more discipline before breaking his leg under Ryan last year.

I also think we can use his strengths by designing plays that use his penetration abilities.

Instead of us faulting Rogers for free lancing and allowing the opposeing offense to game plan against it.
I think we need to use his strengths to dictate to the offense what plays we feel threw film and scouting that is their bread and butter interior rushing plays.

With Rogers you can force a team to go to another option threw game planning, take that away and now you can dictate to the opposing offense by taking them away from their comfort zone.

Oh yeah, btw; this will also effect their play action pass as well.

RAC & CO, I thought never capitalized on Shaun Rogers strengths.

Our CB's will be key in our run defense I think [Like #29 #31 were], because teams are going to be forced to run off Tackle on us.

This is year two under our current staff.
I expect to see improvements and to look and act like a NFL defense.

Hey Calzone, I think Rogers has those intangibles that you speak of.

The whole team feeds emotionally off of his play.

Like when blocking FG's or anything else he does, his team mates are just as amazed as everyone else and he inspires others to play as hard as he does, like Cribbs, by the example they sets.

Teams must game plan with their blocking assignments.
What is so hard for you to understand that it makes players around Rogers better, by making their jobs easier by taking double and triple teams on.

What's your point, because I don't find one in your refute.

SR is a beast and I love the fact that he plays on our team. He has to be accounted for every second while he's on the field and he can be really fun to watch, not only by the fans but his teamates as well.

With that being said, he is not a leader on this football team. His work ethic and attitude are always questionable.

How is it his teamates do not elect him a captain? after all, they all seem to be so enamored by his abilities. They chose first year Brown Fujita over him, how could that possibly happen? Fujita has done absolutely nothing for this team. Why? Because the players buy into what Fujita is( or what he might be) more than they do SR.

SR has also never proven to make players around him better,he didn't in Detroit and he hasn't here, how the team responded "after" his injury last year is truly indicative to that.

If you've ever played organized sports you'll know guys rally around the "leaders" of the team, and it's those guys that inspire the rest to play better. The coaching staff needs to be mentioned here as well.

I know you don't agree with me and that's fine, but don't try and suggest that I'm not a fan of SR.

Hey,..... don't take my word for it.

Eric Mangini said of defensive lineman Shaun Rogers.

"Now the things that we talk about are how do we achieve that together. What's that like and what goes into that whole process? One thing that I like that Shaun does a lot and does well is he'll talk to the younger guys. They may be trying to figure out how to do something and really have no idea where to get the answer from. They kind of do and Shaun will take them through. He's very good like that, in terms of sharing his experience with those guys. That, to me, is important from all of the veteran guys and the really good ones leave a legacy, not just of their play, but the other people that they help make play better.

What about that DT from Jacksonville (Robinson?) that just got cut? He's the one that does the slapping routine before games.

Just to be clear, I would only want him because that guy looks insane on those youtube videos. I have no idea of his level of play (that's my full disclosure) these days.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.
