SILVER SPRING, Md. — A gunman who had what police described as "concerns" with the Discovery Channel networks took at least one person hostage in the company's suburban Washington headquarters Wednesday.
Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Starks would not say if the man works for Discovery Communications now or worked there in the past. He also would not say whether anybody was hurt.
Montgomery County fire spokesman Capt. Oscar Garcia said three bomb technicians responded to the scene and several more were on the way.
The initial report was of a suspicious package that was possibly explosive, said Garcia, who also said no one had been injured. He said some employees had left the building.
Montgomery County Police Cpl. Dan Friz told WJLA-TV that a tactical team was trying to get in touch with the gunman, who was being monitored on closed circuit TV.
Adam Dolan, a sales director in Discovery's education division, told The Associated Press by phone that he was heading to lunch with a co-worker when he heard there was a situation in the building.
He was told to go back up to the top floor, the ninth, and lock the door and turn off the lights. Eventually the workers were herded down a stairwell and told to go home.
"Everyone was very scared, but at the same time ... I think people were calm and collected and responded as one would expect in this situation," said Dolan, 28.
When he got to the bottom floor, he saw shattered glass near the company's daycare and suspected it was broken to get the children out. He later got an e-mail that all the children were safe and had been taken to a McDonalds.
Dolan said the company has unarmed security guards who won't let anyone into the building without a badge.
Another person inside the building told The Associated Press the gunman had something strapped to his chest and had hostages. The person asked not to be identified, saying people inside were told not to speak to the media.
County government spokesman Patrick Lacefield said the hostage-taker was armed and claiming to have an explosive device.
It was unclear how many people were being held hostage, Lacefield said. Police evacuated the building, asked people in nearby buildings to stay inside and blocked off surrounding streets, he said.
ATF and FBI officials also said they were responding.
Discovery Communications LLC operates cable and satellite networks in the U.S., including The Discovery Channel, TLC and Animal Planet. Discovery shows include "Cash Cab" and "Man vs. Wild," and TLC airs "American Chopper" and "Kate Plus Eight."
Animal Planet also airs the controversial series "Whale Wars," about attempts by environmentalists to disrupt the Japanese whaling industry.LINK

Please don't let this be some Christian goofball who is upset because they run shows on evolution and global warming.. please... I'm tired of convincing people that I'm Christian AND somewhat intelligent because I keep being compared to nutbags who do crap like this.. 3. All programs promoting War and the technology behind those must cease. There is no sense in advertising weapons of mass-destruction anymore. Instead, talk about ways to disassemble civilization and concentrate the message in finding SOLUTIONS to solving global military mechanized conflict. Again, solutions solutions instead of just repeating the same old wars with newer weapons. Also, keep out the fraudulent peace movements. They are liars and fakes and had no real intention of ending the wars. ALL OF THEM ARE FAKE! On one hand, they claim they want the wars to end, on the other, they are demanding the human population increase. World War II had 2 Billion humans and after that war, the people decided that tripling the population would assure peace. WTF??? STUPIDITY! MORE HUMANS EQUALS MORE WAR!
4. Civilization must be exposed for the filth it is. That, and all its disgusting religious-cultural roots and greed. Broadcast this message until the pollution in the planet is reversed and the human population goes down! This is your obligation. If you think it isn't, then get hell off the planet! Breathe Oil! It is the moral obligation of everyone living otherwise what good are they??
5. Immigration: Programs must be developed to find solutions to stopping ALL immigration pollution and the anchor baby filth that follows that. Find solutions to stopping it. Call for people in the world to develop solutions to stop it completely and permanently. Find solutions FOR these countries so they stop sending their breeding populations to the US and the world to seek jobs and therefore breed more unwanted pollution babies. FIND SOLUTIONS FOR THEM TO STOP THEIR HUMAN GROWTH AND THE EXPORTATION OF THAT DISGUSTING FILTH! (The first world is feeding the population growth of the Third World and those human families are going to where the food is! They must stop procreating new humans looking for nonexistant jobs!)
6. Find solutions for Global Warming, Automotive pollution, International Trade, factory pollution, and the whole blasted human economy. Find ways so that people don't build more housing pollution which destroys the environment to make way for more human filth! Find solutions so that people stop breeding as well as stopping using Oil in order to REVERSE Global warming and the destruction of the planet!
7. Develop shows that mention the Malthusian sciences about how food production leads to the overpopulation of the Human race. Talk about Evolution. Talk about Malthus and Darwin until it sinks into the stupid people's brains until they get it!!
8. Saving the Planet means saving what's left of the non-human Wildlife by decreasing the Human population. That means stopping the human race from breeding any more disgusting human babies! You're the media, you can reach enough people. It's your resposibility because you reach so many minds!!!
9. Develop shows that will correct and dismantle the dangerous US world economy. Find solutions for their disasterous Ponzi-Casino economy before they take the world to another nuclear war.
10. Stop all shows glorifying human birthing on all your channels and on TLC. Stop Future Weapons shows or replace the dialogue condemning the people behind these developments so that the shows become exposes rather than advertisements of Arms sales and development!
11. You're also going to find solutions for unemployment and housing. All these unemployed people makes me think the US is headed toward more war.
Humans are the most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around and are wrecking what's left of the planet with their false morals and breeding culture.
For every human born, ACRES of wildlife forests must be turned into farmland in order to feed that new addition over the course of 60 to 100 YEARS of that new human's lifespan! THIS IS AT THE EXPENSE OF THE FOREST CREATURES!!!! All human procreation and farming must cease!
It is the responsiblity of everyone to preserve the planet they live on by not breeding any more children who will continue their filthy practices. Children represent FUTURE catastrophic pollution whereas their parents are current pollution. NO MORE BABIES! Population growth is a real crisis. Even one child born in the US will use 30 to a thousand times more resources than a Third World child. It's like a couple are having 30 babies even though it's just one! If the US goes in this direction maybe other countries will too!
Also, war must be halted. Not because it's morally wrong, but because of the catastrophic environmental damage modern weapons cause to other creatures. FIND SOLUTIONS JUST LIKE THE BOOK SAYS! Humans are supposed to be inventive. INVENT, DAMN YOU!!
The world needs TV shows that DEVELOP solutions to the problems that humans are causing, not stupify the people into destroying the world. Not encouraging them to breed more environmentally harmful humans.
Saving the environment and the remaning species diversity of the planet is now your mindset. Nothing is more important than saving them. The Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels.
The humans? The planet does not need humans.
You MUST KNOW the human population is behind all the pollution and problems in the world, and YET you encourage the exact opposite instead of discouraging human growth and procreation. Surely you MUST ALREADY KNOW this!
I want Discovery Communications to broadcast on their channels to the world their new program lineup and I want proof they are doing so. I want the new shows started by asking the public for inventive solution ideas to save the planet and the remaining wildlife on it.

On a side note - I think he probably watched too much t.v., and he gives t.v. too much credit for the ills of the world.

Oh, I've pretty certain that he's gonna leave there feet first... one way or the other.
Someone just needs to point out to him that he's part of the problem, his being there drew out countless police officers - burning tons of fossil fuels. He has also caused tons of spikes in internet usage, television usage, all of which consumes energy and harms the animals of this planet. His breathing, eating - and even his visiting that building - all contribute to the downfall of Gaia.

It is not known if the police have "custody" of a body or a live body. First reports were that he is alive.

In reading more, and in seeing pictures of the situation - I believe the cops should get about 2, maybe 3 blocks away - cordon off the area, then remove the obvious signs of police near the building.
Have a couple officers, dressed like homeless people, around the entrances, exits. And ignore the guy. When this "Lee" guy looks out, he should see nothing. No televisions crews, no obvious police. Wait him out. No food going in - nothing. Make him think he, and his "protest" mean nothing.
He'll get ticked, then come out - nab him then.
Either way, with what he did, he's expecting to die. Giving him attention right now is what he wants. So, ignore him.
The hostages just may have a better chance of living if he feels nobody cares about his situation - he wants fame and power - don't give it to him.

I am just glad the situation looks like its been dealt with and hopefully no one else was hurt.

They are reporting the gunman is dead. Here is an excerpt from AOL
(Sept. 1) -- Police snipers this afternoon shot dead a gunman carrying a backpack full of possible explosives and freed the three people he had been holding hostage inside the headquarters of the Discovery Channel in Silver Spring, Md., authorities said.
All three hostages were safe, Montgomery County Police Chief Tom Manger said. He initially said police had shot the suspect but he did not know the man's condition. Police later confirmed the gunman was dead.
The suspect, identified by local media outlets as 43-year-old James J. Lee, entered the building around 1 p.m. today, armed with a gun and wearing metal canisters that appeared to be explosive devices, police said.
"We heard three gunshots around 1:20 [p.m.]," a Discovery Channel employee who did not wish to be identified told AOL News
