I questioned why Jake was still in there, not due to the loss that ensued, but because it was pretty obvious the injury was affecting his game...which I felt in the end was one of the reasons for the loss.

It's part of the "why" I asked it..the media has been saying he was hurt,so why wasn't he yanked? I mean we knew there were going to be issues but the way this game was played ,it doesn't look good.. If the offense bogs down the D will follow because they can't stay on the field all game.

Regardless of losing some things still have to be questioned DC..U can't ignore those ,it adds up to the loss. This isn't a team loaded with talent(especially in the skill department) so the margin for error is slim..
I agree with every word.. win or lose you need to look at the game with a critical eye.. but when you win its a critical eye, when you lose it's blame.. I guess that is the distinction I'm trying to draw.. there is plenty of blame to go around so we don't need blame, we need corrections.
Quote:
Now lets address that..because out of the coaches mouth came the line that JH would fix that..so you have to see if it's fixed by using him..the game changers on this team weren't used .
When weren't they used? In the first half we scored 14 points, Hillis had 6 carries, Harrison had 3 including his long run.. Hillis had one fumble in the first half and another at the beginning of the second half.. in the second half we did not score... after Hillis had his second fumble, he had... ready for this? ZERO touches. Harrison had every rushing attempt (except for a few wildcats) after Hillis had his second fumble.. the fact that it was totally ineffective doesn't mean it wasn't tried.
Quote:
Our downfall was NOT taking advantage of the what we do have. Harrison's speed and nimbleness was needed more than Hillis's straight ahead banging when they were crowding the box. Let Vickers lead for someone with speed and who can manuver.
We did that, it didn't work. When Hillis fumbled the second time, we should have been scoring there to go up by 2 or 3 scores.. but anyway, after that point, it was all Harrison for the rest of the second half.. granted I think that was all of about 4 or 5 carries because we couldn't get a first down or sustain a drive but Harrison was on the field, not Hillis..
These are our running plays in the second half after the initial drive...
Drive 1: Harrison for 1 yard B. Watson for -1 yard
Drive 2: Harrison for no gain
Drive 3: Cribbs for no gain Delhomme for 1 yard
Drive 4: Harrison for 1 yard Harrison for -4 yard Harrison for 6 yards (three consecutive plays inside our own 10 and a punt)
Then we had 3 drives of nothing but passes...
Look, I think our play calling totally lacked creativity. I don't think we ever really found any kind of a rythm to get into.. I'm not saying it was pretty or it was great or anything.. just trying to dispell this rumor that we "should have used Harrison more in the second half".. we did, it didn't work.
Quote:
We needed play action and things 'like' the wildcat to make up for what we clearly didn't have..
Play action doesn't work if you can't run the ball.. and we weren't being all that effective doing that. Yea the numbers looked ok in the end but in watching the game did you ever really get the feeling they were afraid of our running game? No, not really. As for the wildcat.. we need to use that for more than a play here and a play there. When the Dolphins do it effectively they go to it for almost an entire drive unless they get to an obvious passing down or something.. we run it for no gain then don't run it again for 2 more possessions.. all in all the offense appeared to have no "purpose" all day.. they had no identity, it was more like Daboll was searching for something to work rather than following some kind of a plan...

Now I'm only going on what little bit I heard on the radio and what i'm reading (not from this board)..but was Harrison taken out after he ripped off the 39 yarder(?)..and what happened in the second half when the offense was deflating? What plays were being called then? And certainly if they have 8 in the box ,that means they're open for anything going downfield .
If you say they ran Harrison but Tampa was stuffing it..then why wasn't Wallace being used in some packages to show a rinkle they haven't seen? 9 carries..wow thats using him a lot..Tampa's D was almost last against the run last year and they're not that good right now ..
Play action doesn't work if you can't run the ball
Throw to your backs..not hard to do.
Were they utilizing the TE at all in the second half? If you have that many in the box,the TE (let alone a WR) gets single coverage on a DB..

http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/arti...66-4cdbb6378382(On it looking like Jake was limping during the game yesterday)- “His ankle got a little twisted up, but he felt good enough to continue on and I felt good enough with him continuing on at that point. Yes, it did on one of those, it wasn’t really scrambling, he was stepping up in the pocket.” (On if twisting his ankle affected any of his throws, particularly the second interception)- “I didn’t talk to him about that yet, so I don’t think so. But I actually haven’t spoken to him about that play yet.” You didn't talk to him about this YET? You should have IN GAME Everybody could see that in fact IT DID affect his throws...only our Stooges didn't see that? Are you freaking kidding me? (On the differences in the running game between the first and second halves and if Tampa Bay made any adjustments)- “Yes. With the success that we had in the first half, they brought more guys up, there were more line stunts, there were more things that they were doing to shut that down, which makes you naturally work to pass the ball more because there are so many more guys in the box. That was one of the biggest differences.” Apparently he even saw TB's adjustments and Delhomme's inability to beat them with the opened up pass lanes....yet, he continues his apologetics: (On if he could have put Seneca Wallace in for Jake)- “You know, we have packages for Seneca. That’s not something we are the least bit uncomfortable with doing. I just thought at that point, Jake gave us the best chance to get out of the backed-up situation. That was unfortunate, the field position late. It seemed like that whole fourth quarter, we were backed-up.” Sooo, he saw them make adjustments to stop our running game, he saw Jake limping, he saw us not completing any passes drive after drive and this moron "THOUGHT JAKE GAVE US THE BEST CHANCE" ??? What a loser...

Mangini started Brett Farve in NY with a torn shoulder muscle for two games, and Brett couldnt throw but Mangini played him, why would we expect anything diffrent from Mangini,
There's a limit to how much a player can play injured and still be effective, Mangini dosent know where that limit is at, as he's proven in the past, If the players dosent say coach I cant play Mangini will play'em

The play after that is when Hillis ran in for the TD.. the series after that was nearing the end of the first half and they were all pass plays which led to the INT.. In the first drive of the second half Harrison and Hillis split carries, Harrison had 2 including the first play of the 2nd half, Hillis had 3 including the fumble that ended the drive.. If you want to know how productive they were, it was honestly about even.. Harrison for 6, Hillis for 1, Harrison for 1, Hillis for 7.. then the Hillis fumble.

ineffective running and passing really... sounds generic but .. here,
in our next 3 possessions we had 5 rushes for 1 yard total.. and Jake was 2 for 4 for 9 yards... No first downs.
Then our last 3 possessions we started on our own 7, our own 6, and our own 3 and we couldn't get anything going to even flip field position..

Calling Mangini "Cartman" is getting old. I don't expect you to stop because I am saying this. You have the freedom to call him Cartman, I have the freedom to say that calling him Cartman is juvenile, annoying, and lessens the weight of anything you say on this message board.
Been sayin the same thing for years now.. thanks Davy but it appears that some of our posters think they are Rome Clones and that it's cool to come up with stupid names for people.. Juvenile is the right word I think...

I hope it turns out to be nothing serious. After all the reading I've been doing about Browns QB's today I'd love to see Jake stay healthy and prove his doubters wrong.

Jake couldnt scramble Jake couldnt plant his leg to throw a pass, as a defense your not worried about the pass anymore, they moved in the LB to stop the run..and didnt worry about the pass, thus making our offense one dimensional and ineffective..cant run cant pass they win

I was waiting for Mangini's explainations reguarding the decision not to pull Jake. It really makes me scratch my head. He didn't even ask his QB if the ankle was affecting his throws- it was plainly evident to all watching that Jake couldn't step into the throws. They were sailing high and wide. He did not have to ask him (but should have)- but he should have seen the problems Jake was having and acted on it. Why were we backed up with bad field postion- because Jake was a sitting duck with his immobility. That right there said a QB change needed to be made. Get the mobile guy out there.
If there was a throwup graemlin i would use it now.

Browns QB Jake Delhomme in walking boot, no update yet on status for Chiefs
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme wore a walking boot on Tuesday, two days after injuring his right ankle in the 17-14 loss against Tampa Bay, according to a league source.
But the club had no update on whether Delhomme had an MRI exam or its results. 24 0 0Share
The source said that all indications are that backup Seneca Wallace could receive the bulk of reps with the No. 1 offense Wednesday in preparation for Sunday's home opener against Kansas City. Delhomme will begin the work week probably listed as questionable.
JB not coming: According to a source who has spoken with Jim Brown, the Hall of Famer will not change his mind about boycotting the Browns' Ring of Honor ceremonies scheduled this week and concluding at Sunday's game.
"He's not coming," the source said.
The Akron Beacon-Journal and Associated Press reported Monday that both owner Randy Lerner and President Mike Holmgren recently sent Brown letters expressing their hope that he would attend.
I guess it takes a walking boot for Genius to realize the guy is hurt...you kidding me?....
i'll be suprised if he plays sunday...looks like the Seneca Walace era has begun...

He'd better not play Sunday. You cannot convince me that he'd require a walking boot today and yet still be ready to play in 5 days.
Wallace starts.

hopefully Wallace doesn't get hurt because Colt isn't ready...I think colt could be the answer for us, but not yet..He needs another year of being groomed and tutored by holmgren.
i just hope Colt don't have to play this year.

Sometimes a walking boot is strictly precautionary. I had tendonitis once and wore a walking boot to school, took it out for practice and then put it back on. Just limits the pounding

Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme wore a walking boot Perhaps Delmonte needs to wear a throwing boot for those turrible throws ... Wallace should get the start..and maybe Jim Brown needs a MRI..his grey matter is sprained..

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2010/09/cleveland_browns_quarterback_j_1.htmlCleveland Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme will sit out practice today with injured right ankle, is day-to-day for Chiefs Published: Wednesday, September 15, 2010, 10:40 AM Updated: Wednesday, September 15, 2010, 10:51 AM CLEVELAND -- Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme will sit out practice today with a right ankle injury suffered Sunday against the Bucs. He's "day-to-day'' for Sunday's home opener against Kansas City Delhomme wore a walking boot on Tuesday, a source said. He also underwent a MRI, results of which were not revealed. Browns coach Eric Mangini said Delhomme "is getting better'' but that he's still sore. "He's a pretty tough guy,'' said Mangini, adding that he's had players return from ankle injuries by the next game. He said he'll make his decision at the end of the week. He did not say whether or not he'll announce his decision. "It just depends on how the week goes,'' Mangini said. Mangini said he felt comfortable with keeping Delhomme in the Bucs game based on all the information he received during the game. He said sometimes you know more after the game. The injury occurred at the end of the first half on a Delhomme interception that killed the Browns' momentum. He limped and grimaced, but played the entire second half, completing only 9-of-19 attempts and throwing another interception. Seneca Wallace, who will take the first-team reps today, will get the start if Delhomme can't play.

I will be pretty surprised to see Delhomme play (except in an emergency situation) on Saturday.
IMO, Delhomme is still the starter. But, I play Wallace against the Chiefs and get Delhomme to as close to 100% as possible for the Ravens. Wallace is perfectly capable, IMO.
This is a winnable game. No use trotting out a gimpy QB when you have a perfectly viable option in Wallace.
Unless this is just precaution and they feel that, as a vet, Delhomme can play well in the game without having a whole week of practice.

I know that I sprained my ankle something fierce last winter playing basketball. I jumped and landed right on a guy's foot. Heard the popping and everything.
I hopped to the bench, tied my shoe tight, and sat there for a bit. Within about 10 minutes, my ankle was pretty much numb. I mean, no pain whatsoever. When I got up to try it out, I had a limp, but I could run ok and I could move ok. I went back into the game and played the rest of the time, about another 45 minutes.
The rest of the night, it was sore, but manageable.
The next day, it felt like my foot was going to fall off. I could put a tiny tiny tiny amount of pressure on it before tears started welling up in my eyes.
So, could Jake have felt ok to go back in with an injury? Sure he could.
Also, didn't Kelly Holcomb stay in a game a few years ago, and win it, with a broken leg or something like that?
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

I can echo this story. Tried to make a hard cut playing some football, and planted on something other than turf. Felt two pops and went down like a sack of potatoes. Got up, nursed it for about 10 minutes, then finished up the game.
The next morning I literally fell out of bed. Wanted to chew my foot off.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

yeah, but i still think it was a bad decision to leave him in the game. You didnt have to be a doctor to see he was struggling out there, and he did, and we lost.

The only thing I can think of as to why they didn't get Wallace in for an injured Jake.... Maybe Wallace didn't get any reps and the coaches think he wasn't smart enough to run the game plan.... But that is weak because every player better know the game plan.
Jake is in a boot now.. great. I hope it isn't too serious, ankles and feet can be tricky. I'm not giving up on Jake, he can be a good option for us at QB but if Wallace tears it up it would be hard to not want to ride any momentum we can get.
Like someone said earlier (i'm to lazy to look) If the coaches believe Jake doesn't need all the reps through the week and are just getting the ankle as close to 100% as they can get it, i'm ok with that, but he better not be hobbling around like an old man.
